Year 9 Aim Higher
An Aim Higher day was organised for pupils in
Year 9 to show them what it might be like to take
up Science or Engineering as a Career.
An organisation called The Smallpeice Trust came to school to
present a STEM day where students worked on projects
to make renewable energy.
The Smallpeice Trust has been going for over 40 years
and it is an independent educational charity that runs
hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
(STEM) activities and exciting engineering courses for
pupils.
After taking part in an icebreaker activity, students were
split into small teams to design and make at project
which encouraged creative thinking.
The main project was designing, testing and refining
wind turbines. Throughout the day, the pupils were constantly learning, improving and putting into practice skills
such as mathematics, physics, budgeting, working to deadlines, project management, team working and enterprise
skills....

Honda School of Dreams
The School of Dreams is a series of two-day Thinking
Skills Workshops for Key Stage 3 students. It has been develope
d by Honda
(UK) as a programme to help young people to unde
rstand the importance of pursuing their dreams, and teaches skills and
strategies to
help turn their ambitions into reality. The School
of Dreams also
helps students to discover different, creative and fun
ways to learn.
On Thursday and Friday 3rd-4th February a group of
gifted and talented Whitby High School students, plus pupils from
local primary
schools took part in the Honda School of Dreams
project. All the
events took place in the Overpool Hall, where arou
nd twenty
Whitby pupils from Years 7-9 took part. One of thos
e was
Megan O’Rourke from Year 7 who said, “Firstly we
formed a
large circle and began juggling and catching an incre
asing
number of juggling balls. I think this was to break
the ice and
get to know each other. After this we were taught
a Japanese phrase "Yume No Chikara", which means "See
one's dreams" or
“The power of dreams”. Following a short break we
then learned
about Daruma dolls. The doll had two blank eyes –
we had to make
up a dream we wanted achieve in ten years time, so
we coloured in
one eye – we are to colour in the other eye if the drea
m comes true.
After lunch until the end of the day we took part in
an Apache relay
race (with lots of challenges in between) and when
we finished we
had to shout "Yume No Chikara!".
On Friday we completed mind maps on what we had
achieved on day 1.
After lunch we started to look at problems that are
in the world today
and what can be done to solve them, for example bully
ing and animal
cruelty. We then had to make a poster on it, and desig
n some souvenirs
like key chains. We also had to include a silly idea to
stop our problem
and a sensible idea to solve our problem. At 2.30pm
parents arrived and
we made a presentation about our work. It was reall
y good time”.
Thanks Megan, sounds like a worthwhile experienc
e for all involved!
