Walmart Clears Out Squatters

A
change inside a local Walmart recently led to a change outside the store, at
the retail location on Carl Boyer Drive in Santa Clarita. Company personnel have
begun enforcing a regulation limiting the amount of time a vehicle can remain in
the parking lot in front of that particular Walmart store, a change which coincided
with the arrival of new store manager Jorge Lopez.

People in cars, RVs or other vehicles are allowed to stay for 24 hours,
which eliminates the propensity for homeless individuals to set up
camp or others to remain for indefinite periods of time. The new policy
followed the change in store management, which often brings a new
evaluation of rules and regulations, plus staff members were getting
complaints, said Walmart company spokesman Brian Nick.
“Essentially, just by and large, we don’t have a specific corporate policy
when it comes to RVs in our parking lots in our 4,500 stores,” said
Nick. “In general, we are … welcoming for folks who stop along the
way in their travels. That’s not uncommon at all. In this instance, with
the store you’re referencing, the parking lot has been used more
frequently and there’ve been customer complaints.”
There is no corporate policy, just decisions at the local level. And it is
not uncommon for local management to make such changes, he said.
“There is new management in place and they made a decision to have a
limit on how long cars can be in our lot. It’s usually 24 hours and that’s
just really to be able to provide if someone truly is kind of stopping by
and shopping at the store,” Nick explained. “But, people leaving
vehicles for days, it just brings up safety and security concerns.”

Santa Clarita Man Arrested
in Alleged Burbank Stabbing

B
urbank Police Department officers arrested a Santa Clarita man early
Monday morning after he allegedly stabbed another man, officials said
Wednesday.
Around 1:15 a.m. Monday, BPD officers responded to the 600 block of
Cambridge Drive in Burbank regarding an assault taking place, said Sergeant
Claudio Losacco, public information officer for the BPD.
Two men who had known each other for several years got into a fight,
Losacco said.
Ryan Davis, 35, of Santa Clarita, allegedly stabbed the victim, who is a
39-year-old male, in the upper torso, Losacco said. The victim declined
medical treatment and transportation to the hospital because the injuries were
not severe.
Davis was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and booked into
the Burbank City Jail on a $35,000 bond, Losacco said. The Los Angeles
County District Attorney’s office filed one count of 245(a)(1) PC, Assault with
a Deadly Weapon, against Davis.
Davis is expected to appear in court Wednesday, Losacco said.

Library to Kick Off Teen
Advisory Board Program
in September
L
ocal teens have the chance to
shape the services provided by
Santa Clarita public libraries by joining
an advisory board this fall. Youth in
grades 7-12 can fill out an application
and submit it to the library branch of
their choice to participate in the kickoff meeting, scheduled to begin next
month.
Previously only available at the
Valencia Library, this program is now
being offered at all Santa Clarita Public
Library branches, including the Old
Town Newhall and Canyon Country
Jo Anne Darcy library branches.
The meetings will be held monthly,
September through May.
Teen Advisory Board members will
earn volunteer service hours for
participating, and the program is an
opportunity for teen patrons to get
involved with their community and
local library branches. Members work
closely with librarians to develop group
goals, such as providing input on young
adult library collections, contributing to
the library teen web page, and assisting
with the planning of teen services and
programs.

2015 Job Fair at College of the
Canyons in October and join an annual event that offers job seekers a onestop venue for employment opportunities. Held on Wednesday, October 14,
2015, employers will man booths in
the East Gym on the Valencia campus
at COC, where students and other visitors can seek employment in a diverse
range of fields.
The Job Fair is designed for employers with current paid job opportunities
only. If there are any start-up fees,
training fees, material fees or finger-
printing/background check fees, it
must be stated clearly on the employer’s table.
There is room for 100 employers at the
fair, but KHTS AM 1220 offers a “Virtual Job Fair” for those businesses that

Lindie Kane Named CCCAA
Men’s Cross Country
Coach of the Year
C

Kane has been named 20142015 California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) Men’s
Cross Country Coach of
the Year. This is Kane’s
second CCCAA Coach of
the Year award after being
named the men’s track &
field coach of the year in
2007.
Kane earned the honor —
which is determined by a
vote of coaches from across
the state — after leading the
COC men’s cross country
program to the equivalent
of a cross country triple
crown. In 2014, the Cougars won the Western State
Conference (WSC) title,
the Southern California
Regional title and the State
Championship — the
school’s first since 1975.
Kane also became the first female
head coach to win a CCCAA men’s
cross country state title.
“It was an amazing record-setting
season and I share this prestigious
award with my staff and team,” said
Kane. “No one can do it alone.
I am truly blessed to work with
knowledgeable coaches and athletes
that are passionate about running
and strive for perfection. … It was a
great honor to represent College of
the Canyons and receive recognition
for all the hard work that goes into
winning a state title.”
Service for Madeline Rossiter,
Victim of Off-Roading Crash

for Madeline “Maddie” Rossiter, the Canyon Country
teen who was killed in an offroading crash last month.

a.m. on Saturday, August 22,
2015. A reception will immediately follow the service.
The new memorial honoring veterans of the Vietnam and Korean
wars will be unveiled at a service
held by the Rotary Club of SCV
and Elks Lodge 2379, the groups
responsible for the addition to the
Rotary Memorial Garden, which is
located at the Santa Clarita Sports
Complex.
Nineteen-year-old Maddie was a 2014 graduate of Canyon High School.
In addition to winning a men’s state
title, Kane also led the COC women’s
cross country program to a second
place finish at the state championships — narrowly missing out on a
championship sweep. Later in the
year, Kane, who heads both the men’s
and women’s track & field programs,
guided COC to its first women’s track
& field conference championship in
school history.

month, there will be another memorial added to an existing venue
dedicated to those fallen in service
to the United States.
Crowds will gather on Saturday,
August 29 at 8 a.m. for the service,
which was organized by the Harry
Bell Memorial Veterans Committee, the leader of most veterans
programs in the SCV. The Committee is also involved with Habitat for
Heroes at Centre Pointe Pkwy, the
group of homes sold to a commu-
nity of veterans. The main street
leading into the Habitat for Heroes
homes is named Harry Bell Drive,
for a local man who was a WWII
veteran, Rotarian, charter member
of Elks Lodge 2379, a Shriner, and
leader in the development of the
City of Santa Clarita as far back as
1959. Bell passed away in 2012.
The service will include a color
guard of Vietnam veterans, and participants include Pastor Art Dolder,
Jim Lentini, Bill Reynolds, Lou
Esbin, Jay Larkin and Tom Hovis.

OPINION
It’s All About the Margins

T
here has been quite a bit of talk
about minimum wage, income
disparity between the lowest and highest
earners and the term “living wage” over
the past year. I know it seems a bit late to
jump in on this issue, but a recent article
caused me to realize some people don’t
argue for the wage increase for purely
political reasons; some people out there
actually don’t understand the simple
economics behind why it would be such
a bad idea.
As an MBA candidate and someone
currently seeking funding for a startup,
I spend quite a bit of time reading business case studies, books on management
theory and news about how changes in
direction (of a business, the economy or
politics) affect companies.
So, before we get into macro/micro
economics, management theory and
workplace psychology, let me be clear: I
think this is a horrible idea. Now, let me
explain why. The article I read took the
liberal argument that fast food companies like McDonald’s could easily afford
to pay each of their workers a living
wage.
It seems to be a liberal view that, as long
as there’s money in the bank that means
we can spend it all. Even though a company like McDonald’s could, in theory,
take money out of its profits to increase
wages across the board, there is a simple
financial reason they don’t want to: the
margins.
Everyone answers to someone, no matter
how high up the corporate ladder you
get. As a publicly-traded company, the
CEO and management answer to the
shareholders, and while you may buy
McDonald’s stock purely because it’s
one that you know, savvy and institutional investors purchase stocks based on
their margins and financials.
Most large companies require a certain
percentage of growth per year and can
account for this in various ways, but
revenue growth or market share increase
are two pretty popular metrics.
So, let’s take a quick look at some results
of McDonald’s choosing to pay $15 an
hour for fast food workers to flip burgers
or work a cash register.
Let’s just say that the average meal at
McDonalds is $5. That’s based on how
much it costs McDonald’s to procure the
supplies to make your meal, ship them
to each store, advertise their products to
bring in customers, pay rent on the store,
pay employees to show up, pay fulltime employees’ healthcare, maintain
a certain profit margin, put money into
research & development for new menu
items, pay their liability insurance fees,
and keep money in the bank for unforeseen circumstances.
There are factors in cost that McDonald’s can’t control (price of gas, price of
goods, price of insurance), and other
factors they can (labor costs). As labor is
typically the most expensive factor, what
happens when we increase the labor cost
for one of society’s jobs with the lowest
standards for employment?
Firstly, the price of the McDonald’s
meal will have to increase. The untrained
observer (or Liberal economist who lives
in a bubble and has never dealt firsthand
with businesses in reality) could say that
McDonald’s could easily take money out
of their profits to spread the wealth to
the lowest rung on their corporate ladder,
but doesn’t understand the margins and
ratios that will be required to stay the
same (meaning price will have to go up).
So, what if McDonald’s is the first to
change their corporate culture to this
socialistic mindset rather than one of
capitalism? One of the reasons McDonald’s is so profitable is because of their
scale, which allows them to be cheaper
than the next guy. But, an increase in
their costs may either take away any
price difference or cause their costs to
be higher than their competitors. Supply
and demand will typically make people
second-guess whether they want to pay
$6.50 (or whatever the price is raised to)
for a fast-food meal at all, or may send
that customer to a competitor’s store,
resulting in a loss of market share, reduction in revenue, and require actions to be
taken to put their ratios back in check.
Now, many of us have already seen the
completely automated checkout kiosks
McDonald’s has been sitting on for quite
some time. They have already been
implemented in Europe (where labor
costs are extremely high), and I’ve been
wagering for quite some time that the
moment labor costs rise just a few cents
above one of these kiosks, McDonald’s
will rapidly make the change. So, what
happens when the fast food workers
who protested for $15 an hour get their
way and increase the costs of a Fortune
500 company with technology ready to
replace them? Massive layoffs.
And this brings us to another reason raising minimum wage for fast food workers
to $15 an hour is a bad
idea —their job isn’t worth it. I know
that makes me sound like a callous and
uncaring devil, but it’s the cold, hard
truth. If you took the hours I worked as
a soldier and did some simple calculations, you’d find that I was paid well
under minimum wage to risk my life and
fight for my country.
And to be a soldier I had to pass quite
a few tests: intelligence tests, criminal
background checks, physical tests, security clearance checks and drug tests. So,
how do you explain that a person can
skip most of those requirements, get a
job flipping a burger or working a cash
register, and deserve higher pay than the
soldier risking his life? What does that do
to the morale of the soldier?
Again, looking at ratios, what happens to
the other people in the workforce whose
ratio of pay vs. minimum wage is now
being eroded? What about a collegeeducated professional who used to make
60 percent above the high school dropout
flipping burgers, but now makes less than
50 percent more?
From an HR perspective, there are
formulas created to decide how much to
pay workers. One of the well-followed
metrics is that the minimum wage
should be around 50 percent of the
median wage for the company. So again,
an unintended consequence of raising
minimum wage: you have to raise all the
other
wages to
keep the ratios in check.
Lastly, what about the “living wage”
argument? To put it bluntly, it is not a
company’s job to take care of you. It’s
the company’s job to create and sell a
product at a price that turns a profit.
If the company is publicly traded, like
McDonald’s is, it’s also the CEO’s job to
increase the stock price to keep shareholders happy. If your only drive in life
is to work at a minimum wage job with
extremely low requirements, the problem
is yours, not the company’s. Again, it is
not McDonald’s job to pay for you to
have a big screen TV, iPhone and pay for
your kids’ college. If you want that, it’s
on you to find a job that can pay for it. A
fast food position is not that job.
The problem seems to be that everyone
wants to place blame on someone else,
and it’s not P.C. to hold people accountable for their actions anymore.
There are a few things that make America great for business: one is the ability for
anyone to be successful if they’re willing
to work, and another is the well-known
path to success.
If you have some amazing athletic talent, good for you—go play professional
sports. Otherwise, if you want to be
successful in business, go to school and
check the blocks to pad your resume, or
have an amazing idea that you can sell.
But, going through life with absolutely
no accomplishments, no drive to better
yourself and no actions to move up in
life are not the path to success—here or
anywhere. We cannot vote ourselves into
prosperity, and if you really think you
should get paid more for your job, prove
it.

f course, one can’t take too
much time off from the collective head-scratching about the
fact Donald Trump is still in the
race. At all. And that anyone supports him. At all.
Everyone knows he’s not the first nutcase in politics.
But, really? To use one of his favorite words, how
“stupid” can anyone be to elect this guy? Not only is
name calling juvenile, he can’t come up with a better
word than “stupid”?!
Even if people look past his sophomoric behavior
using remedial vocabulary, it’s hard to know how
his lies haven’t “hung him” yet. I read one political writer who pointed out that Goebbels, of Nazi
propaganda fame, said, “If you tell a lie big enough
and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to
believe it.”

fellow Republican Rand Paul. (Oh yeah, do we really believe Donald Trump is a Republican? After
all, he’s famously said, “I probably identify more as
Democrat.”)
Oh, my – I’m having trouble seeing how those on the
Right consider President Obama an embarrassment.
For those of you who “trust” Trump more than the
others, it must be, no doubt, because of his extreme
wealth. What else could you “trust” him for? To be a
faithful husband?! To be a faithful candidate?! To not
say stupid things?!
For your information, his rocket ship to millions
began with millions. Not all that hard to do.

Nothing changes! We grouse, we rant,
we curse, we scream, we cry, we write
letters, we make phone calls, we vote
with change in mind and still, nothing

The handwriting is on the wall for all
to see, but too many don’t see, care
or believe we’re headed for major

Michael Hoefflin Foundation
Supporting Families Struggling with Pediatric Cancer

I
f the Michael Hoefflin Foundation was granted one wish, it would be to
defeat all forms of children’s cancer.
Founded in 1995 by Chris and Sue Hoefflin during their nine-year-old son’s
battle with cancer, MHF is an organization dedicated to providing financial
and emotional support to families struggling with pediatric cancer in Santa
Clarita and surrounding valleys.
Michael Hoefflin succumbed to his cancer just one year after the
organization’s inception, but MHF officials continue to honor his memory
with their dedication to helping children like him and their families.
“Chris and Sue Hoefflin are the heart of the Michael Hoefflin Foundation,”
said Executive Director Gillian Stone. “It is humbling to continue the work
of the foundation, knowing the sacrifice they have given and the strength
they continue to provide, never asking for anything in return.”
When a child is first diagnosed and admitted to the hospital, MHF
volunteers arrive with a “Kare Kit” containing items like blankets, brushes
and toys. They continue to visit and provide emotional support and
advocacy for the child and his or her family throughout their hospital stay,
and even offer tutoring services and college scholarships.
Several different types of counseling are available through MHF, including
parent and sibling counseling, grief counseling and support groups. Family
members are also invited to attend social activities and events throughout
the year.
MHF’s most important fundraising event of the year, the 22nd annual
“An Evening Under the Stars” gala dinner and charity auction, is set for
Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club. The event features
dinner, drinks, a raffle for a 15-day Hawaiian cruise and entertainment, with
money raised from the event going toward MHF’s programs and operations.
“Attendees can expect a fun-filled evening with entertainment from the
Kelly Rae Band and lots of unique and interesting items to bid on in the
silent and live auctions,” Stone said, adding that the gala “has come to be
known as one of the favorite fundraising events in Santa Clarita.”
The renowned Kelly Rae Band is set to perform high-energy country music
throughout the evening, and the event is being chaired by Tim and Jenny
Ketchepaw, as well as Brenda Neilson.
“We are grateful for the support of our community, whether at our 5K
earlier in the year or the amazing efforts by people such as Roy Wiegand,
who recently ran in honor of one of our recently lost angels,” Stone
continued. “This is our chance to give the community that we so appreciate
a beautiful, memorable and, hopefully, inspiring evening, and let people
know about why we need the support we do.”

For families struggling with their child’s medical bills, MHF provides

Hoefflin Foundation, Shaunie LeBouef has served as the organization’s office
manager for more than a decade.
“She is dedicated, loyal and the backbone of the MHF,” said Executive Director Gillian Stone.
One valuable asset LeBoeuf brings to the MHF is her ability to remember vast
amounts of detailed information, ranging from the history of the organization to the
names and backgrounds of volunteers and donors.
“Shaunie has a wealth of knowledge about the
MHF and has an amazing amount of history about
the foundation in her head,” Stone said.
“Shaunie has a gift for remembering our
donors and volunteers.”
But above all else, Stone said, “She is truly

Kevin Stevens - Rising Sun Karate Academy
This William S. Hart High School graduate won the College of
the Canyons Cross Country Series race last Thursday. It was the
fifth race in the series. She completed the course in 16 minutes,
49.6 seconds.
“Grace Zamudio graduated from Hart 5-6 years ago and went
on to have a fantastic college career at Glendale City College and
Loyola Marymount,” said Larry David, Hart High School cross
country coach. “Here she was a four-year varsity runner and
leader of the girls distance team in cross country and track. She
worked hard at becoming a top runner and was rewarded for her
efforts.”
“Kevin Stevens is an exceptional athlete,” says Robyn Word of Rising Sun
Karate Academy in Stevenson Ranch. “In the world of Karate, competitors
usually specialize in either Kata (forms) or Kumite (sparring). Rarely are they
outstanding at both.”
Thirteen-year-old Kevin Stevens of Stevenson Ranch made the U.S. National
Team in Kumite in 2014, which earned him the opportunity to compete at
the Junior PanAmerican Karate Federation Championships in Lima, Peru.
He was the only U.S. male athlete to win Gold in Kumite. This year Kevin
made the U.S. National Team in Kata and will be competing at the Junior
PanAmerican Karate Federation Championships in Santa Cruz, Bolivia at
the end of this month, and at the World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia in November.
“Kevin is extremely dedicated and disciplined, and he is a great role model
for the younger students at our dojo,” says Sensei Randy Word, owner/head
instructor at Rising Sun Karate Academy.

orty years have passed since Saugus High
School first opened its doors. On September 8,
1975, there were 870 9th and 10th grade students
filling its classrooms. Now it’s time to celebrate.

create an enclosed, private room in the future.
It’s not just mousaka and pastichio anymore.
Wine and beer is served at Athena’s, now with
a bigger selection than before, and another new
feature: happy hour.
ew owner, Karin Vahan, with husband, Moses, and son, Hayk, has kept Athena’s much
the same as its successful past, but with a broader
range of menu options.
The new menu still offers the memorable Greek
comfort food it’s offered for years, but the restaurant has actually expanded its flavors to include
both Greek and Italian food. Not only are there
pastas and other Italian fare on the Athena’s
menu, the restaurant owners are literally expanding their borders by opening Mama Mia Pizza
next door in the next month or two.
“It has been in Stevenson Ranch for 15 years,”
said Moses Sahakian, who owns part of the
Mama Mia business. “It is known for its New
York style pizza. It’s sold by the slice and there
are 16-inch and 20-inch pizzas.”
Both Mama Mia and Athena’s will offer pickup
and delivery service, as well as onsite and offsite
catering. The restaurant will host parties and oth-

plates.
Athena’s has successfully offered customers a
taste of Greece for years, and the new owners
hope to fill the parking lot with all the regulars,
plus Italian food lovers, happy hour aficionados
and a hungry brunch crowd.
“It’s been here for so long. It’s part of the neighborhood, part of the community,” said Moses.
“We want to take advantage of that and offer
more to the community.”

The Ballot Initiative Process is Getting Out of Hand

T
he ballot initiative system in California was designed to give ordinary citizens the chance to change the
laws of our state, as well as introduce
new ones. That’s why it’s tragic that
the process today is so tilted in favor
of the rich and well-connected.
obstacle citizens’ groups face is simply
getting their propositions on the ballot.
Per California law, organizers only
have six months to collect the 365,880
signatures currently needed in order to
qualify an initiative, one of the stricter
time restrictions in the nation.
According to Kathay Feng, executive director of California Common
Cause, to qualify a proposition for the
ballot and wage an adequate campaign
for its passage costs anywhere from
$5-$10 million. No grassroots group
can afford a budget that large, she said,
without wealthy backing.
To meet this deadline, campaigns are
often forced to hire paid signature
gathering firms. These companies send
out hundreds of agents to infiltrate
communities and get signatures from
voters. Their services can cost over $3
million, well outside the reach of a
typical citizen group.
Official spending data shows this to
be true. California Common Sense, a
non-partisan think tank, published an
analysis of spending on major ballot
measure fights from the year 2000 to
May 2012. They found that over 92
percent of “all contributed funds came
as donations of $10,000 or more,”
proving the system’s reliance on the
very rich and special interests.
Drastically lowering this expense, Feng
said, would open the door for citizendriven initiatives to get onto the ballot.
“Even campaigns with a lot of grassroots support ultimately get over the
hump with a few large super donations,” Feng said.
And yet, despite the obvious unfairness at work here, it appears there’s
reason for hope. Feng said a huge

the University of Michigan, discovered that citizen-driven measures have
a significant chance of success if voters are given the opportunity to decide
on them.
In her book, “The Populist Paradox: Interest Group Influence and
the Promise of Direct Legislation,”
published in 1999, Gerber analyzed
a sample of 57 ballot measures voted
on between 1988 and 1992. She found
that citizen-supported proposals got
approved at a rate of 50 percent.
By comparison, measures backed
primarily by special interests were
approved at a much lower rate of 31
percent.
So, how can we drastically lower the
cost of qualifying a proposition, and
give voters the chance to vote on the
kinds of ideas they are aching for?
One promising idea is to allow citizens
to sign ballot petitions online. Internet
users already sign hundreds of petitions every day on sites like Change.
org. Allowing the people to sign ballot
petitions, as well, is simply the next
logical step in digital activism.
It would drastically lower the cost of
qualifying an initiative for the ballot
and eliminate the need for paid signature gathering firms. This technologybased activism would also be incredibly active to millennials, who love
disrupting old ways of doing things.
They may not vote in record numbers,
but they do have a strong desire for
social change.
Additionally, it would solve a criticism that has plagued the Black Lives
Matter and Occupy Wall Street movements. Critics of these movements
have argued that the activists involved
haven’t clearly articulated what they
are fighting for. Revolutions must have
specific demands, these critics say, and
broad slogans just don’t fit the bill.
Bringing the initiative process to the
internet would solve this problem.
Activists of both movements would
be able to coalesce around propositions they are fighting for, providing a
strong basis for their organizing.
It would be a powerful and profound
change, a change that would help level
the playing field for the good-hearted,
idealistic citizens, who want nothing
more than to see an equal and fair
society.

Home in Time for Supper: the Pros
and Cons of a Set Bail Schedule

I
f you’ve ever read an article about celebrity arrests, you’ve probably noticed that they’re often
in and out of jail in a matter of hours. If you’re
thinking it has something to do with preferential
treatment toward celebrities, you may be wrong. The
reason people with a lot of money can get in and out
of jail so quickly is because the courts in the State
of California operate on what’s known as a “Felony
Bail Schedule.”
The “Felony Bail Schedule” is set to fix the amount
upon which a person who is arrested (without a
warrant) may be released from custody prior to
their appearance in court. It is a penal code list of
felonious charges and corresponding bail amounts
for each crime. Each county in California has one,
and they can vary. For example, the bail amount set
for a felony domestic violence charge in Los Angeles County may be set at a different bail amount in
another California county.
The felony bail schedule allows bail to be set immediately after an arrestee has gone through the booking and processing procedure, if the defendant is
allowed bail. Booking and processing can take anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours, depending
on what police station, sheriff station, jail or court
the arrestee was taken to. Once complete, those who
have the cash (or who obtained a bail bond) can be
bailed out right then and there.
Additionally, if a defendant is booked or charged
for two or more offenses, bail will be based on an
amount computed under the felony bail schedule
for the charge having the highest bail, including any
enhancements or prior convictions.
In states that don’t utilize a felony bail schedule, bail
is not set after booking and processing is complete.
Instead, arrestees remain in police custody until
they can see a judge. If an individual is arrested,
say, on a Friday afternoon, the odds are that he or
she will not be able to see a judge until at least the
following Monday, meaning they will have to spend
the weekend in jail. After all, one cannot be bailed
out of jail if bail hasn’t been set. This system may
seem like the worse of the two; however, having
a judge set bail in-person can be advantageous in
certain situations.
Once the defendant is in front of the judge, he or
she can request a legal counsel petition to have the
charges and/or bail dropped or reduced. Additionally, the judge will be able to go over the circumstances
of the alleged crime, as well as the defendant’s
personal situation and can set an appropriate bail
amount based on that information.
Even though California counties use the Felony Bail
Schedule to determine bail amounts without having
to see a judge, it doesn’t necessarily mean that an
individual will have to accept that amount of bail. If
an arrestee remains in jail custody and obtains legal
counsel, he or she can request a bail hearing and
petition for a bail reduction. But note, this can take
longer to do. The felony bail schedule, however, is
really in place so an arrestee can obtain the quickest release possible via bail bond, and further, the
county may have the advantage of having to house
fewer inmates.

A 36-year-old Castaic man who works in set lighting was arrested for
preventing/dissuading a witness/victim from a repo. A 54-year-old retired
Canyon Country woman was picked up for trespassing.
A 21-year-old coach from Saugus, a 25-year-old teacher’s aide from Pacoima and an unemployed 21-year-old Valencia man were charged with taking
a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
A 43-year-old truck driver from Castaic was arrested for robbery.
A 21-year-old landscape worker from Newhall was arrested for assault with
a deadly weapon, not a firearm, with great bodily injury.
A 33-year-old designer from Los Angeles was charged with battery against a
former spouse. A 53-year-old unemployed Castaic woman was charged with
corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant.
A 27-year-old Moreno Valley construction worker was cited for possession
of an opium pipe/drug paraphernalia, and an unemployed 22-year-old Los
Angeles woman was picked up for possession of a narcotic/drug/alcohol/
drug paraphernalia in jail.

is also an XBOX Kinect that lets you dance with three people including yourself. There is a camera that sees how
you’re dancing to see if you’re doing it
the right way. It says “Excellent” and
you get stars to see who got the highest
score. Just Dance comes in both the
XBOX 360 and XBOX One.

made it through committee. Assembly Bill 85,
aimed at increasing transparency with agencies,
unanimously passed out
of the Senate Appropriations Committee earlier
this week.
AB 85 clarifies the Bagley-Keene Act so state agencies,
such as the California High Speed Rail Authority, will no
longer be able to hold closed door meetings without public oversight. This lack of clarity in current law has been
exploited by state agencies into a growing practice of
establishing two-member bodies in order to avoid compliance with public meetings standards.
“AB 85 will ensure that the state government conducts its
business in a transparent manner,” Wilk stated. “Sacramento enforced this mandate on local governments back
in 1993 and it’s time we live by the same rules.”

service providers, including the DVC,” said
Peter Long, Ph.D., president and CEO of
Blue Shield of California Foundation. “Their
role in the community is absolutely essential,

By awarding the grant money, the foundation
underscores the importance of unrestricted
core operating funds, which can help domestic violence agencies cover important organizational costs during a time when public
resources remain scarce. The funding is part
of a group of grants designed to empower
California’s domestic service providers and
help them continue to make a difference in
the lives of thousands of women, children,
and families across the state.

Santa Clarita’s MLB Pitchers
A handful of pitchers in the Major
Leagues with ties to the Santa Clarita
Valley are having nice seasons. One is
in a playoff hunt. One is making a case
for American League Rookie of the
Year.
Saugus High graduate Tommy Milone,
and Hart High graduates Trevor Bauer,
Mike Montgomery and James Shields
are doing their alma maters and Santa
Clarita proud this summer.

Angels are ahead of the Twins in the
American League wild-card standings.
Plus the Tampa Bay Rays were tied
with the Twins at 59-59.
Bauer, a starter for the Indians, is coming off one of his worst starts of the
season. He lost to the Yankees, 8-6, on
Thursday and was yanked in the fourth
inning. He gave up six runs on seven
hits and walked two.
Here is a look at how these four pitchers have been faring so far this season.
Bauer dropped to 9-9 and saw his ERA
go up to season-high 4.35. He has lost
four of his past five decisions.
Milone, a starter for the Minnesota
Twins, came off the 15-day disabled list
over the weekend and beat the Cleveland Indians, 4-1, on Sunday.
He gave up one run on three hits in five
innings to win his sixth game of the
season. He had a left elbow strain that
put him on the DL since July 31. He
snapped a personal three-game losing
streak.
He started off the season well. He was
4-1 in his first eight starts and he had
a 1.80 ERA in four starts in April. But
he lost three games in June and three
more in July. His season numbers are
still pretty good. He has 137 strikeouts,
good enough for 10th in the American
League, in 140 2/3 innings and 23
starts.
In the game against the Indians, Milone
was on a short leash. He was limited to
76 pitches and left the game with a 2-1
lead. The Twins scored two more runs
in the eighth inning to secure the win.
Milone has been solid all season. He
has made 15 starts and has a 3.65 ERA.
He has 60 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings
and has only walked 26 batters.
The Twins are in the hunt for one of
the American League wild-card playoff
spots. As of Monday, the Twins were
59-59 and 2 ½ games behind the Balti-
Montgomery, a starter for the Seattle
Mariners, was being touted as a Rookie
of the Year candidate in June. But he
has faltered in his past seven starts.
Montgomery only went 2 1/3 innings
in his last start, a 15-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. He gave up
nine runs on 10 hits and dropped to 4-5.
It was a far cry from his run in June
when he recorded back-to-back shutouts against the Kansas City Royals
and the San Diego Padres.
He won three games in a row and was
4-3 with a 1.62 ERA. But his season
took a turn for the worse on July 5. He
lost to the Angels and went on a personal three-game losing streak. The
Mariners haven’t won in his past seven
starts. In three starts in August, he is
0-1 with a 9.49 ERA.
In 14 starts this season, Montgomery
has 61 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings. His
ERA is at 4.14. But he ranks sixth in
the American League with two complete games. He has some time to turn
his season around, but not much.
Shields has been the workhorse of the
Padres’ starting rotation. He is among
the National League leaders in innings
pitched and strikeouts.
But he hasn’t won a game since July 17
and lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 7-3, on
Aug. 12. The loss dropped him to 8-5
with a 3.89 ERA.
Shields is fourth in the National League
in strikeouts with 167 and ninth in the
league in innings pitched at 152 2/3.
Those are the highlights. On a down
note, he is second in the league in walks
with 54. He has also given up 144 hits
and 24 home runs.
He was the subject of trade rumors at
the end of July. He could still be dealt
before the end of the season. The Dodgers were one of the teams interested in
him. It’s possible Shields could return
to L.A. to close out his 2015 season.
Santa Clarita on the LPGA
Valencia High graduate Alison Lee
continued her impressive rookie season
on the LPGA.
She notched her fourth top-10 finish at
the Cambia Portland Classic over the
weekend.
Lee finished in a tie for eighth place at
11-under.
Brooke Henderson won the tournament
at the Columbia Edgewater course in
Oregon. At 17 years, 11 months and six
days, she is the third youngest tournament winner in LPGA history.
Lee, meanwhile, won $30,264 for her
share of eighth place. She has won
$397,747 on the LPGA in her rookie
season and is ranked No. 44 in the Rolex world standings.
Santa Clarita’s International Ties
On the international front, Valencia
High graduate Kyle Ensing was the
co-leader in kills for the United States
Youth National Volleyball team’s
match against France at the FIVB Boys
U19 World Championships in Argentina.
He had 18 kills. The United States won
the match, 3-1. The U.S. was 3-0 in pool
play after beating France. The team had
one more pool play match against Argentina on Wednesday.
