Activity Instructions
Part 1: Practice the method
Ensure that you are wearing an apron and gloves (when not
leaving prints) as this can be a messy activity
Step 1: Each pupil should have a Cobex sheet (these can be
cut in half to double the amount) and place any of
their fingers or thumbs in the middle of the sheet
once, fingerprint side down.
Step 2: Within each group they should take it in turns to dip
the soft brush into their powder to get a small amount
of powder on the tip (there will be enough powder in
the lid of the jar). Then tap the brush against the
newspaper on the desk to get rid of the excess
powder.
BE CAREFUL not to breathe the powders, if used correctly
you shouldn’t create clouds of dust.
When taking the prints you should demonstrate the technique
first, ensuring you stress that they need very little powder. Step 3: The pupils should gently brush the print with the brush
along the print, as if they were painting it, the print
should slowly appear. It will likely take a few attempts
to get this right as too much powder will damage the
print, this is normal.
You may want to go to each of the groups in turn choosing
one of their clear prints and demonstrating how an examiner
would lift the print with the lifting tape (photo left). Supervising
the pupils as they lift them with scissors. The ideal lifted print
would not contain any air bubbles.
Step 4: Using scissors carefully cut a length of lifting tape
from the reel, apply the tape to the print, starting at
one side of the print and smoothing to the other side
ensuring that you do not get any air bubbles.
Step 5: Carefully peel the tape away from the surface with
the print and applied to the transparent Cobex sheet,
using a similar method to applying the tape to the
print, careful to prevent air bubbles as these can
distort or damage the print.

Junior Forensic Investigation My Fingerprints Key Stage 2
ZFK 220 010
An introduction to the science of fingerprints, pupils will practise the investigation
skills they have learned by investigating the pattern types on their own
fingerprints. They will each make their own fingerprint cards for them to take
away. Looking at individuality and patterns; they will investigate which patterns are
more frequent in their class and construct a graph of their results.

Junior Forensic Investigation Footprints Key Stage 2
ZFK 220 030
An introduction to the science of footprints, Pupils will practise the investigation
skills, and knowledge of solids and liquids they have learned by investigating the
pattern types on their own shoes. By comparing features of their footwear they
can learn about the traces they leave behind them and about everyday
processes. This kit would be ideal for creating a display of the different prints left
