The Story Begins...
W
e join our heroes as they continue
their quest to advance good
nutrition for all children.
Meet
Mr. Breakfast, our fearless leader and the
keeper of school milk, as he brings together
all the components of a healthy school breakfast. Behold the
awesome prowess of Susie Powers, Sandwich Sensei, as
she conjures a whirlwind of healthy breakfast sandwiches.
Be amazed by Crunch, the whole-grain—and wholehearted—hero, whose stupendous strength strikes fear in artery-
clogging “plaque monsters” everywhere. Find intrigue with the Fruit
Avenger, who mastered his childhood fear of fruit to become an
intense and powerful warrior. And meet Yogurl, the newest member
of the team, who spins, surfs and serves yogurt from her skyboard.
Rounding out this terrific team is your trusty, protein-packed
sidekick, Eggbot.
In today’s episode, the team takes on a mission to rescue hungry
kids who have been skipping breakfast. Little do our heroes know that,
one day, incredible assistance will come from a hitherto unexpected
place: School nutrition professionals across the United States

“My first mission! This is so
exciting!” said Yogurl, as the Breakfast
Team sped across a gloomy sky of gathering clouds.
“Silence,” growled the Fruit Avenger.
“Secrecy is vital. Silence is key.”
Susie Powers, Sandwich Sensei, rolled
her eyes. “I highly doubt anyone is going
to hear us coming from inside the Health
Jet,” she said, her fingers dancing over the
brightly lit buttons of the engine control
panel. “It’s cloaked with cutting-edge
HACCP-shielding technology. Besides,
this baby has antioxidant radar, super-

tonic engines and a trillion times more
energy than the Breakfast Skipper’s leaky
old boat.”
But the Fruit Avenger did not relent.
“We journey to meet our nemesis,” he
admitted, “but the true journey…lies
within.” He pulled a single-serving box of
raisins from his utility belt and placed it
on Susie’s control panel—then darted to
the back of the ship, where he disappeared
into the shadows. Susie sighed.
“This is a sweet ride,” continued
Yogurl, admiring the ship. “And way
bigger than my skyboard. After the
prophecy comes true, we totally should use
it to cruise to parties.”
“What’s this ‘we’ stuff?” smiled Mr.
Breakfast, expertly steering the jet through
the threatening clouds. “You’re still an
apprentice.”
“Right,” she sighed. Then she perked
up again. “But aren’t you guys excited
about the prophecy?”

prophecy that National School
Breakfast Week will come on
March 2-6, 2009, bringing with it the
theme of ‘Power Up With School Breakfast’ and convincing children everywhere
to eat breakfast at school?”
“Yes, that’s the one! The NSBW
prophecy!”
“We still don’t know whether America’s school nutrition professionals
will celebrate NSBW,” Susie admonished.
“And we can’t do it without them.”
“We’ve been fighting alone for so long,”
Mr. Breakfast pondered. “Why would
others join forces with us now?”
“But they say there are contests, too!
And a toolkit! And websites! According to
one wise sage, the website for the public is
www.schoolbreakfast.org, and
there’s a website especially for school
nutrition professionals at www.school
nutrition.org/nsbw.”
“Yogurl, you are young and have much
to learn,” said Susie. “Do you think
NSBW could be that simple? Long before
March of 2009, America’s school nutrition
professionals would have to prepare the
menus, the logistics, the publicity, the
right merchandise…Oh Yogurl, remain
focused on your mission. Remember,
only the tried and the true can qualify as a
master among the School Breakfast
Heroes.”
“We’re there,” Mr. Breakfast
announced. “All right team, are you ready
to power up with school breakfast?!”
“Yes, sir!” they shouted.
“Good. We have work to do…”

shore of Hunger Harbor. “Remember,” Mr. Breakfast said, “Our mission is
to rescue the children aboard the ship.
The Breakfast Skipper somehow has
convinced them that they don’t have time
for breakfast, despite all the evidence of

performance. Now, the students are so
malnourished that they cannot succeed in
school, let alone row his shameful ship of
famished fools!”
“But how are we going to get across the
water?” Yogurl asked. “I don’t think you
all will fit on my skyboard.”

“Beep beep!” said Eggbot. He pushed a
button on his chest, and a huge, sunnyyellow life raft ballooned across the
shallows.
Our heroes traversed the water,
Yogurl on her skyboard and the
others by raft. As quiet as a school
cafeteria just before breakfast, they landed
lightly on the deck of the archvillain’s ship.
The glow of dawn broke through the
clouds, and the wind picked up, causing
the Fruit Avenger’s cape to billow.
“Let’s go,” Mr. Breakfast said.

tiptoed stealthily across the deck.
Suspense hung in the air like the mouthwatering smell of a school cafeteria’s fluffy,
whole-grain pancakes.
“Shh,” warned Mr. Breakfast. The
Heroes halted, holding their breath and
listening. But all they heard was the
distant sound of snoring.
“How can they still be asleep?” Yogurl
marveled.
“Troublemakers aren’t usually early
risers,” commented Mr. Breakfast.
“That reminds me of something I
heard once about school nutrition professionals,” Yogurl said. “They get up when
it’s still dark. I just know that such
dedicated people will fulfill the prophecy.

“The last thing we want is a food fight in
the cafeteria. In fact, nobody has ever seen
the Breakfast Skipper, because of SNA’s
concern that his image would be used for
battles.”
“I never get to do anything!” Yogurl
wailed, slumping on her skyboard in
defeated frustration.
“You have much to learn, young one,”
came another voice. Mists swirled as Susie
materialized in their midst.
“While you discussed our nonviolence
policy, I did a little reconnaissance work,”
Susie reported. “I found the door to the
hold of the ship. It’s straight back and on
the right.”
“Good work,” Mr. Breakfast said. “But
next time, remember that it’s better to
include the entire team in your planning.
Even a breakfast sandwich is not a
complete meal by itself.”

captives. Fruit Avenger—stand watch over
the skipper’s quarters. If he wakes up,
send the alarm.”
“A watermelon warning?” asked the
Fruit Avenger.
“No,” said Mr. Breakfast. “A fully
loaded banana beeper.”
“Excellent choice.”
When the heroes reach the door,
they saw it was sealed from the
outside with a huge, ugly padlock.
“Reminds me of the old walk-in
freezers from decades ago, before the
safety standards went into effect,” Mr.
Breakfast recalled.
“Poor Junkfood Man,” said Susie,
shaking her head.
“If only his judgment hadn’t been
clouded by bad nutrition.”
Crunch wrenched the door open, using
his surprisingly soft bagel powers to
muffle the noise. “Crunch represents all
grain-based breakfast foods, not just
crunchy toast and cereal,” Susie explained
to Yogurl.
Within moments, the captives were
being rescued. Yogurl huffed as she
dragged a sleepy child onto her skyboard.
“Oof, this one’s heavy.”
Mr. Breakfast shook his head. “Sometimes, when kids want to lose weight,
they—”
“Don’t say it,” Susie pleaded.
“They skip breakfast,” he finished, his
jaw set. “It’s all part of the Breakfast
Skipper’s conspiracy to drive down school
breakfast consumption. He clouds their
minds about the idea that a balanced
breakfast is a proven indicator of a healthy
lifestyle.”
“Poor kids,” Yogurl sympathized. “But,
after we rescue them, they could learn a lot
by writing their versions of the Power Up

On their way out, the School Breakfast
Heroes passed the captain’s quarters
again. A loud, ragged snore emanated
from its depths. I wonder what he looks
like? Yogurl thought, stopping in front of
the door. I could be the first to find out. She
hesitated, then cracked the door open and
peered inside. The Breakfast Skipper lay
in bed with a sheet pulled over his face. A
hooked hand poked out from under the
covers.
“Yogurl, come on,” Mr. Breakfast said,
and Yogurl reluctantly followed him.
But the Fruit Avenger had not moved.
From somewhere in the depths of his
great, grape-colored cloak, he produced a
large basket of fruit.
“What are you doing?” Susie asked.
“What you hear is no ordinary snoring,” he replied grimly. “My special fruity
senses detect the faint humming sound of
an oncoming flu. This man needs some
vitamin C pronto!”
“Don’t get sidetracked,” Susie warned.
“We need to get out of here.”
The Fruit Avenger’s eyes narrowed.
“You know, sometimes I wonder if you are
truly serious about fruit.”
The Avenger boldly pushed the door
open and stepped inside. But what was
that? Under the covers, the Skipper
snorted and squirmed! Would he awake?
“Alright, that’s enough cheesy narration,” said Mr. Breakfast, who had
returned to collect his crew. The team
tiptoed out, but not before the Fruit
Avenger perched his fruit basket on the
Skipper’s nefarious nightstand. He reached
up to place a red bow on top of the basket.
Soon, the team was speeding away to
safety in the Health Jet. “Another mission
accomplished for the School Breakfast
Heroes,” announced Mr. Breakfast
proudly, as he expertly steered past a large
stork flying toward SNA Headquarters.

March 2-6, 2009. Here are 7 tips you need to know to be a super school
breakfast provider and to help your student customers celebrate
“Power Up With School Breakfast!”
1. Aim high. The primary goals of NSBW are to increase participation in
your school breakfast program and encourage student customers to learn
healthy eating habits.
2. Hold the local version of the Design Your Own Superhero contest.
Similar to the Design a Candidate contest from National School Lunch
Week 2007, this contest challenges students to draw their own school
breakfast superheroes and explain their super powers. The prize will be a
signed illustration by a professional artist. The local school contests will
run January 1, 2009 to March 6, 2009, and national entries are due
March 20, 2009.
3. Distribute the Power Up Comic Strip. This activity page features a
comic strip that has empty speech bubbles. Sample words are provided
to help kids fill in the blanks, while they learn key nutrition messages
about school breakfast and different food groups.
4. Encourage your student customers, their families and the public to
visit the Hall of School Breakfast at www.schoolbreakfast.org, where
there will be fun activities, profiles of the School Breakfast Heroes and
much more!
5. Enter the SNA Power Meter Sweepstakes. Visit www.schoolnutrition.
org/nsbw to tell SNA about your NSBW plans and, after the event, to
report their impact on participation rates. You can win a chance at great
prizes. SNA members can record the number of breakfasts eaten daily
during NSBW in order to “power up” their meters. The school or district
sets its own target number and sends the results to SNA after NSBW for a
chance at a national award.
6. Celebrate throughout NSBW, March 2-6, 2009. Menus and recipes
are suggested throughout the pages of this article. Additional tools, tips
and resources have been made available by the National Dairy Council
and General Mills at www.schoolnutrition.org/nsbw.

Back at the Hall of School
Breakfast, Susie Powers flipped
lowfat egg patties over the kitchen
stove, as the hungry survivors eagerly
waited around the table in the Operation
School Breakfast room.
“After they eat, we need to get them to
class—and fast,” Mr. Breakfast said,
checking his cafeteria wrist-clock. “Class
starts at 0800 hours.”
“Beep beep!” agreed Eggbot.
Pulling out cartons of yogurt from her
skyboard refrigerator, Yogurl asked, “So,
what are we going to do about Breakfast
Skipper? We can’t destroy him, but we can’t
let him continue to spread his wicked ways.”
“We tried to educate him once,” Susie
reminisced.
“Yeah, we tied him up in the principal’s
office and made him watch a PowerPoint®
presentation about the extensive research
into the benefits of school breakfast,”
grinned Mr. Breakfast, updating the
HACCP log.
Susie sighed. “He fell asleep partway
through. And when he woke up, he was so
angry about being kidnapped, he didn’t
want to listen.”
“So we decided we need a more positive
approach, one that appeals to his interests,” Mr. Breakfast said.
“Eh hem.”
Susie turned around. “Yes, Fruit
Avenger?”
The Avenger coldly crossed his arms
and fixed his gaze of steel on the diminutive superheroine. “Where is the fruit in
this meal?” he inquired.
“Oh. Don’t worry, it’s coming soon.”
“It better be,” he said, covertly placing
a cluster of grapes onto the counter.
“But what does the Breakfast Skipper
enjoy?” Yogurl persisted. “Naps? Being
cranky? Getting an F in school because his
brain is undernourished?”
“Don’t be silly, the Breakfast Skipper is
too old for school,” Susie said.
“I heard he was taking adult continuing
education classes at the School for Fishy
Business,” remarked Mr. Breakfast.
“That’s not funny,” retorted the sensei.
“What? I’m serious!”
“But Yogurl, you’re right about one
thing,” said Susie Powers. “We need a
plan…” SN
