A Message from the Chair
Katherine MacMillan
To you, our donors, a huge Thank You!
Last year, with your help we raised over
$1,100,000. Your dollars went directly
to the purchase of equipment that was
identified by the hospital as being the
most important to immediately enhance
patient care. A new Cryostat machine
for the Laboratory was acquired, as well
as a Dual Channel Endoscope, twenty
Infusions Systems, three Wound VAC
systems for the Medicine Unit and
Macerator Systems for Infection Control.

On February 8, 2014 we were thrilled to
host another successful Friend Raiser Gala
at the Enjoy Centre in St. Albert. What an
event – our Master of Ceremonies, Danny
Hooper, kept us all laughing as he enticed
us to open our wallets a whole lot wider
than we ever had before, to the tune of
$256,000. The fun continued into the wee
hours of the morning as guests enjoyed
dancing to the great music of Bella Rouge.
This year we are thrilled to have our Title
Sponsor, Lexus of Edmonton back again
along with Major Sponsors: Pro-Western
Plastics, Melcor Developments, Kingston
Ross Pasnak, Vandenberg’s Jewellers,
TD, Salloum Wealth Management Group,
Alliance Pipelines, Meadow Construction
and Audie Benson Estate Homes. We
are working hard to ensure the success
of last year is continued and have
again booked the Enjoy Centre, Danny
Hooper but changed our entertainment
to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, so mark your
calendars and plan to attend our 23rd
Gala on Saturday, January 31, 2015. There
are plenty of opportunities for sponsors
and donors, so if you are approached
by a member of our Gala Committee,
please take the time to work with them
to identify the best way for you to help;
or call us at 780-418-7361 to discuss the
benefits of sponsorship.
Our fundraising efforts for the 2014/15
fundraising year are well underway and
the hospital has provided us with their
wish list of equipment and projects they
would like your help funding.
Medicine Program Expansion
($500,000): With the incredible growth
of St. Albert, Sturgeon County and North
Edmonton the demand on the Sturgeon
Community Hospital dramatically
increases every year. To meet the growing
needs of the Medicine Program, it is
vitally important to expand and further
develop this program. The expansion
will improve the ability of the Emergency
Department to treat emergency patients
and if required, move them into the
Medicine Unit in a more timely fashion,
which will help to alleviate the pressure
and wait times in the Emergency
Department.
Level II Neonatal Intensive Care
($500,000): The Sturgeon Community
Hospital maternity unit delivers
approximately 3,000 babies each year.
At present any baby born at the hospital
requiring Level II Neonatal Care is
transported to a hospital in Edmonton.
The demand for Neonatal Intensive Care
in the Edmonton Zone has increased
substantially in the past four years.
Level II care, which includes support
to premature babies, respiratory and
antibiotic support will now be provided at
the Sturgeon Community Hospital, which
will result in a decrease in the number of
transfers required and separation of mom
and baby.
Surgical Program Equipment
Enhancements ($250,000): To support
our ever growing and respected surgical
programs, equipment enhancements
are needed to support the Upper
Limb Extremity, Gynecological and
General surgery programs. Equipment
such as microscopic equipment/
instrumentation and specialty drills
for hand surgery, upgraded equipment
to support minimally invasive bowel
surgical procedures and specialized
equipment required to meet the current
technological standard and support the
most advanced procedures in gynecology
surgery. Some of the required equipment
is needed to perform procedures with
laparoscopic techniques, providing a
shorter length of hospital stay and a
speedier recovery for the patients.
Upper Extremity Care & Research
($250,000): Over the past five years,
the Sturgeon Community Hospital
has become a very active center for
orthopaedic upper extremity care. The
goal is to establish the Sturgeon as an
upper extremity centre of excellence
over the next few years by providing high
quality patient care through undertaking
rigorous clinical outcome research.
There are so many options available
for making a donation: our Annual Mail
Campaign, Planned Giving, Memorial and
Tribute Donations, Buy-a-Brick to Build
the Foundation, Gift-Every-Month club,
Event Support or run your own fundraising
event in support of the Hospital
Foundation. No donation is too small
and every donation is appreciated and
does make a difference so please, when
you receive a request for a donation, give
big or small, but please give. And know
your donation counts and does make a
difference.

Grateful Patient creates Legacy for Adult Day Program
Lilly Schmidt was an active participant in the Adult
Day Program for a number of years after she suffered
a stroke. She had many friends there and loved
the social aspects of the program in which she
attended twice a week. Lilly also enjoyed the crafts
and various activities and outings organized by the
ADP. She especially appreciated the rehabilitation
provided at the Program, which helped her keep
or regain many abilities lost after her stroke. The
independence supported and encouraged by the
ADP was very important to her.
Lilly was raised in Ellerslie, Alberta; then later moved
to Edmonton where she attended high school. Lilly
graduated from the University of Alberta’s esteemed
nursing program. She worked at the U of A Hospital
as a charge nurse in the obstetrics department for
more than ten years.
Lilly’s ultimate passion was for children, especially
her four children and two grandchildren. She was
an only child, so as her family grew so did her
happiness. Lilly’s greatest joy was being in her
family’s presence. She loved to hear their laughter
and stories. She also had a deep affection for
animals and always had a furry friend by her side.
Lilly was a quiet philanthropist who supported
children’s programs, health care and social issues.
Lilly was a very social and creative person who
loved crafts, pottery, gardening, flower arranging and
helping others.
After her passing, it only made sense to Lilly’s
children to dedicate her donation to the one program
that their mother truly enjoyed and benefited from
at the Sturgeon. In December 2013, the Lilly Schmidt
Memorial Fund in support of the Adult Day Program
was created.

The purpose of the Fund is to provide ongoing annual
support for the Adult Day Program. The funds are
used for crafts, trips/outings, entertainment or any
other purposes that would enhance the patient care
experience for clients of the program.
Thanks to her overwhelming generosity, Lilly has
ensured the ongoing enjoyment and best patient care
experience available to her friends and future patients
in the program.

St. Albert Community Foundation
The St. Albert Community Foundation/Thatcher Family funded a second urgently
needed Panda Transport Unit for the Neo-Natal program at the Hospital. This
unit is used for the initial resuscitation, stabilization and transport of neo-natal
patients following delivery.
Opening of the New Physicians Lounge
The Quilliam Family celebrates and is recognized at the grand opening of the new
physician’s lounge space on September 11, 2014. The room was made possible
thanks to the generous support of the Quilliam Family, Anonymous Donor Family
and Hospital Physicians.
St. Albert Legion Donation
Members of St. Albert’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 271 donated $5,000
towards the 2014 fundraising priorities.

Paint the Town Red
The fifth annual celebrating Life and Culture Gala’s “Paint the Town Red” event was
held on September 26th at Morinville’s Community Cultural Centre. The event was a
great success raising $10,000 for patient care and equipment. The event showcased
the great work and talent of local artists while supporting a very important cause, our
Hospital. Attendees had a chance to honor our local Military and enjoyed a special
presentation by the (PPCLI) Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Drum Line.
Funds raised were directed to the Foundation’s annual campaign in support of patient
care medical equipment at the Hospital.

Bad Guys Doing GOOD!
50 1st Legion, Stars Wars Storm Troopers participated in the first annual Eek!
Comic & Pop Culture Fest in St. Albert the weekend of May 31st. Event attendees
had an opportunity to pose for a photo with the group for a donation. All funds
raised were donated to the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation in support
of patient care.

Kids Helping Kids
Hugs and Stitches Quilt Club
St. Albert student, Meghan made a donation of furry friends as part of her
school’s confirmation program. The donation was to assist in the comfort of the
children who attend the hospital.
Members of the Hugs & Stitches Quilt Club donated quilts to the Sturgeon
Community Hospital. These quilts were distributed to palliative and elderly
patients who welcomed the warmth and generosity of these beautiful quilts.
High Q Greenhouses
ACT brings Christmas to the Adult Day program
The annual gingerbread building event was another fun and creative day for the
clients of the Adult Day Program. Our deepest appreciation to the members of
ACT for their continued support of this event.
In June, High Q Greenhouses held their sixth annual plant and flower sale
at the Sturgeon Community Hospital. Once again the sale was a great
success attended by staff, patients and visitors. High Q donated over
$1,000, a portion of their sales to the Foundation.
