Client Case Study
Saving energy at Fallowfields
Country House hotel
Client Overview
Client Objectives
Fallowfields Country House hotel is an award winning independent
hotel located in Oxfordshire. The hotel prides itself on its culinary
excellence and local food sourcing, it being a recipient of the
coveted two AA rosette award. Anthony Lloyd, the managing
director wanted to understand how to cut the rising cost of energy
without negatively impacting on the experience of their guests.
•
Improved understanding of how much energy is being used and where
•
Determine opportunities for cost saving to improve the bottom line
•
Understand what needs to be done to capture these savings.
The hotel consisting of 10 guest rooms has been developed in
two main sections. The original section of the hotel with a floor area
of approximately 6,000 ft2 was built around 100 years ago. A modern
extension was added 14 years ago to double the size of the building
to approximately 12,000 ft2. The hotel uses oil to fuel the boilers for
space and hot water heating, and LPG for cooking. A third of energy
is used on electricity for lighting, small power, cooling and other uses.
Anthony Lloyd, MD of Fallowfields hotel says working with LCMB
delivered the following benefits:
Energy usage in hotels makes up most of their carbon footprint and is
the second largest cost to hotels after people. This makes energy a key
focus for the sustainability of hotel businesses and the environment,
with some hotels achieving savings of 40%, of energy costs, straight to
the bottom line through energy efficiency programmes.
“I would wholeheartedly recommend
LCMB as experts in their field. They were
very professional and quickly got to
the point of identifying practical and
realistic cost saving opportunities.”

The LCMB Estate Healthcheck
Breakdown of energy spend
in a typical hotel
LCMB worked with Fallowfields to provide an estate healthcheck to advise
on the best course of action to save energy, cost and carbon emissions.
The LCMB healthcheck is an action focused energy audit designed to take
a practical cost effective approach to improving a property’s or estates
performance. Recommendations are prioritised and tailored to ensure
there is a clear path to action and implementation. With skills in project
and facilities management, LCMB are also able to help our clients take
recommendations forward to deliver cost savings.

Our Approach
In the space of a one day survey LCMB were able to rapidly prioritise
areas for detailed investigation by reviewing metering, staff feedback
and by using our extensive experience of building performance. The key
recommendations identified are applicable to many operating hotels:
•
Reduced lighting costs by improving standardisation, control
and performance.
•
Improve building heat loss to reduce heating costs.
•
Reduce space heating and hot water costs by improving
boiler performance and control.
•
Identify hidden sources of energy use to reduce and recover heat. •
Engage guests to not only save energy but to also develop a
positive marketing edge.
