About the Adjudicators
Daniel Schmidt
Dr. Daniel J. Schmidt is Director of Bands at Northern Arizona University. Prior to this appointment, he was director of
bands and professor of saxophone and double reeds at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. College ensembles under his
direction have received international reputations, touring Europe, performing at various conventions including the CBDNA
Regional Conventions in 2002, 2006, and 2010 as well as a variety of state MENC conventions. The NAU Wind Symphony has
made promotional recordings for Warner Bros. Music and Carl Fischer Music.
Prior to Dr. Schmidt’s appointment at Mars Hill College, he was the associate director of bands at Syracuse University,
directing the 230-piece “Pride of the Orange” marching band and various concert and pep bands. Dr. Schmidt received the
Bachelor of Music Education degree from Florida State University and was appointed director of bands at Hudson High
School in Pasco County, Florida, in 1987. He is the first person to receive the Master of Music in wind conducting from the
University of North Texas while emphasizing saxophone performance and musicology (1993). Dr. Schmidt is also the first
person to receive the Doctorate of Musical Arts in wind conducting from the University of Kentucky (2000).
Dr. Schmidt was the recipient of a Fulbright Award to Australia in 1993, but refused this opportunity to join the Syracuse
University faculty. He has served as clinician and adjudicator throughout the country. He is the Primary Conductor and
Director of Scholarly Publications for Carl Fischer Music of New York. Projects have included acting as the coordinating editor
for the recent series of band scores entitled Percy Grainger: The Critical Edition. He is the author of My First Klosé, My First
Wagner, My First Universal Method, My First Barrett, and My First Weissenborn, five intermediate lesson workbooks for
woodwinds, and is the co-author of Protocol: A Guide to the Collegiate Audition Process for trumpet, clarinet, trombone,
saxophone, and flute. He is the conductor of the Trade Winds, a professional ensemble that does promotional recordings of
new music for Carl Fischer and Wingert-Jones since 2002. Dr. Schmidt is also a performing artist for the Yamaha Corporation
of America and is the Arizona State Chair and Vice-President of the Western Region for the College Band Directors National
Association.
Brian Wolfe
Dr. Brian T. Wolfe is the Interim Assistant Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Oklahoma School of Music. His
responsibilities include assisting with the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band, directing the Sooner Showmen Basketball Band,
coordinating the Women’s Basketball Band, guest conducting the University Bands, and teaching courses in conducting and
music education.
Wolfe earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting at the University of Oklahoma in 2013. He received the
Master of Music degree in wind conducting from the University of Arizona, and the Bachelor of Music degree in Music
Education from the University of Arkansas. From 2004-2010 Wolfe served as the Director of Bands at Rincon/University High
School in Tucson, Arizona where his ensembles performed nationally at Carnegie Hall, the North Texas Jazz Festival, the
Arizona Music Educators Association Conference, and the Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship.
An active clinician throughout the United States, Wolfe serves as lead clinician with the George N. Parks Drum Major
Academy©. His professional associations include the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association,
College Music Society, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Tau Beta Sigma.

Chad Simons
Chad Simons joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico in 2005. As the Associate Director of Bands and an
Associate Professor of Music, Dr. Simons conducts the UNM Symphonic Band, directs all facets of the UNM athletic band
program, teaches conducting lessons, and serves as the associate conductor of the UNM Wind Symphony. He also teaches
courses in instrumental repertoire, marching band methods, and serves on UNM’s student teacher observation team. For the
past ten years, Dr. Simons has been the Director of the Zia Marching Band Fiesta. The Fiesta is a BOA formatted event that
features 32 bands in preliminary and finals competition. Zia is one of the premiere marching band competitions in the
southwest.
Dr. Simons has extensive experience building and maintaining quality secondary and collegiate band programs. Before
coming to New Mexico, he served as the Associate Director of Bands at Idaho State University, Pocatello, and as a public
school music teacher in his home state of Montana. Active as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor, Dr. Simons has
given clinics, presented a variety of lectures, and conducted concert bands across the country. He is published in Teaching
Music Through Performance in Band, Volume I, and has produced, collaborated on, or directed six separate commercial
recordings. An advocate of new music for winds and percussion, Dr. Simons has had the opportunity to work with composers
such as Michael Colgrass, Steven Gryc, Joseph Turrin, Bob Mintzer, Thom Ritter George, Robert Spittal, Jennifer Higdon,
Gregory Youtz, Dan McIntosh, and Joni Greene.
Professor Simons holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Montana, Missoula, where he graduated with
a president’s recognition award, a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, and a
Doctorate in Wind Conducting from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. Professional affiliations include the New Mexico
Music Educators Association, Percussive Arts Society, the College Band Directors National Association, and the Gamma Iota
chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. Dr. Simons lives in Albuquerque with his wife, Rebecca.
Robert Besler
A native of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Dr. Belser began his musical training on trumpet then on euphonium as a student of
Keith House. He earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Central Missouri State University studying with Russell
Coleman and Robert Gifford. Following his undergraduate studies, he taught instrumental and choral music in Central
Missouri. Dr. Belser served as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Illinois where he studied with Harry Begian,
Gary Smith, and Dan Perantoni, and earned the Master of Science in Music Education degree. He was Assistant Director of
Bands at Eastern Kentucky University directing the concert band, athletic bands, and teaching music appreciation. Dr. Belser
was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The University of Iowa where he was a student of Myron Welch.
He has also studied conducting with Craig Kirchhoff, John Paynter, and Mallory Thompson.
Dr. Belser was honored as a recipient of the prestigious John P. “Jack” Ellbogen Award for Meritorious Classroom teaching in
2000, and has served as a teaching excellence panelist for the UW Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning.
Dr. Belser is quite active as a clinician and conductor throughout the country, and as an adjudicator for bands in the West and
the Midwest. Under his baton, the UW Wind Ensemble performed for the Western/Northwestern Division conference of
College Band Directors National Association receiving acclaim for their sensitivity and musicality in performance. He is a
proponent of new music and the process of creativity, and is not only in demand as a conductor but as a clinician for his
promotion of positive teaching techniques and advocacy for the arts.
In addition to conducting, Dr. Belser also teaches music education and graduate conducting and literature courses. His
research interests include the process of creativity, historic and new wind repertory, and the arts in the process of learning.
Betsy Carras
Betsy Carras has been a participant in the marching band activity for most of her life. She has been a performer,
choreographer, instructor, advisor, and adjudicator for marching band auxiliaries and winter color guards. Her involvement in
the activity has taken her all over the country and abroad. She’s worked with many award winning high school programs,
college programs, and independent color guards: including The Miller’s Blackhawks, Dayton, Ohio. Much of her auxiliary
training was with Fred J. Miller. She has also trained with the Ohio Judges Association, Mid-East Performance Association,
Central State Judging Association, and Winter Guard International. This is Betsy’s second time judging at the University of
Arizona Band Day. She is extremely excited to be here!
Michael Faltin
Michael Faltin is a renowned ethno-percussionist and drummer, performing in a variety of professional settings including
clubs and touring stage musicals He has worked with steel bands in Trinidad, and has studied and performed with numerous
African and Cuban musicians. Faltin currently owns and operates Instrumental Music Center in Tucson.

The French electronic music duo Daft Punk has been on its own musical journey since its inception in 1987.
Their first musical influences were the Beach Boys, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones. As Daft Punk evolved
and grew in popularity, their music used more samples and auto-tune. Interestingly, Daft Punk
then went exactly the opposite direction and wrote the film score to Tron:Legacy.
Their influences for that work include Max Steiner and Philip Glass.
