Fall is here! This is indeed the most beautiful time of the year.
Sixty-two members and guests attended the September 22nd fall
luncheon general meeting at Mullins. I was happy to see
such a great turnout! The motion was made to approve the 2016
-17 budget as presented in the program, which was passed without dissent. The spotlight was on our many and varied interest
groups and upcoming events. I believe that everyone will agree
that the speaker Leah McGarrigle with her topic on preserving life
histories was terrific. We were even given the opportunity to practice a bit of interviewing.

Fall Luncheon
Over 60 guests at our September luncheon enjoyed an unusual
presentation by our speaker, oral historian Leah McGarrigle.
Leah explained that oral histories can take many forms, from a
memoir of your, or a family members’ life, to a eulogy or bequeathment, such as the history of an heirloom or piece of
art. In addition to compiling oral histories for families, organizations or companies, she conducts training on creating oral histories.
As an example she asked our guests to complete a brief exercise. She asked us to ask the person seated next to us “What
did you want to be when you grew up?” and “Who was your
mentor growing up?” This brief exercise was the highlight of the
presentation as members discovered personal insights into their
fellow CWC members who were eager to share answers to
these questions.
Leah explained that doing an oral history is similar to organizing your personal estate. A lot of interest was generated in this, and we may be able to look forward to some of our members creating and
sharing their own personal memoirs.

In Remembrance
Gloria Nelson, a longtime member of the Coastside Women’s Club, passed away August 21, 2016, after a courageous
fight with congestive heart failure.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharol Embry and Diane Jensen and by her son Scott Nelson. She had seven grandchildren
and seven great-grand-grandchildren. Gloria is survived by sister Carol, niece Shelly and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Before Gloria moved to Half Moon Bay, she lived in Santa Ana.
She attended Chapmen College where she received her BA degree in teaching. After graduation, she took a position teaching
first and second grades.
During that time she met a handsome Marine named Jack and
they were soon married. When she and Jack decided to have a
family, Gloria changed her career and became a successful Real Estate Agent, a career that lasted thirty-five years.
After Jack was discharged from the Marines, he became a policeman in Santa Ana, a job he had for thirty
years, from 1958 to 1988.
In 1994 Gloria moved to Half Moon Bay to be near her children. She moved alone, Jack had died of cancer.
When she moved into Ocean Colony, the Homeowners Association gave her a packet with information
about the Coastside Women’s Club. Gloria joined the CWC in 1997 because it gave her an opportunity to
get involved in a charitable and social group. And get involved she did!
Gloria was on the CWC Board for seventeen years. She was President in 2009/2010, Vice President of
Charities and Scholarships, (which she chaired for five years), and Vice President of Programs. She also
chaired many Fundraising projects. She was in charge of Intermediate Bridge for the past 7 years.
She was an incredibly strong and determined person who truly loved CWC. Gloria was a fountain of information for each new group of board members.
Gloria always supported our many fundraisers. She enjoyed playing Mah Jongg and Bridge with her CWC
buddies. Every Sunday she would email the bridge group as to who was playing, where, and who was the
designated snack person.
Her favorite song was “Just Dance”. Its theme is “You should be engaged in life!” and she was.
Her hobbies were Travel, Bridge, Mah Jongg, Water Color Painting, Decorating, Movies and Theater. She
loved to travel to Maui and whale watch.
She especially enjoyed the role of grandma.
We will miss her.

Your Opinion Please
We are considering forming a CWC Travel Club
Would you like to:
 Explore the Bay Area
 Travel to destinations within the United States; perhaps the National Parks or New York City
 River Cruise in Europe
 Join different interest groups to explore your passions
This would involve a professional travel planner. We would need at least 6 month advance planning and
would include women only or women and spouses. The trips would include meals, accommodations
and sightseeing.
Prices will vary depending on type of travel involved. Trip duration would be anywhere from a long
weekend to several weeks.
Your input, please.

Spotlight on Our Kids
As many of you know, we give yearly scholarships to deserving Half Moon Bay high school students.
This letter was received by one of our recipients of such a scholarship
“To all of the wonderful women of the HMB Women’s Club. I want to thank you
all from the bottom of my heart! I so appreciate all of your kindness and generosity. Your generous scholarship is being put towards financing my final semester before going off to nursing school. My family and I cannot thank you enough
for your financial support in my academic endeavors! It’s lovely ladies like yourselves that make the world a nicer place.”
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Sincerely,
Morgan Krieger
Interesting Facts about Autumn








Autumn has been called the “hectic beauty of death”.
Levels of testosterone is both men and women are at their highest in the fall.
Each fall, the black-capped chickadee’s tiny hippocampus enlarges by 30%, which enables it to remember where it collected seeds in different spots in trees and on the ground.
A study in the journal Perception noted that men think women are more attractive in cooler seasons.
The Artic Tern migrates 11,000 miles in the fall.
According to Facebook profiles, autumn is the time when more singles change their status to “In a
Relationship” or “Engaged”. More breakups occur during the summertime.
Research suggests that the low levels of vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin) can lead to weight gain
during autumn and winter. Lack of vitamin D reduces fat breakdown and triggers fat storage.
Autumn babies are more likely to live to 100 than those who were born in other times of the year.

JUDY’S PAVLOVA RECIPE
Ingredients
4 large egg whites, room temperature
Pinch of salt
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons superfine sugar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
2 teaspoons white-wine vinegar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups heavy cream, whipped
4 bananas, for serving (optional) (they brown quickly, so add just before serving)
Mixed berries, such as raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, boysenberries or blackberries...I add
kiwi at Holidays, or when available
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Using an 8-inch bowl as a guide, trace the perimeter of the bowl
onto a sheet of parchment paper. Transfer parchment paper, pencil side down, to a baking
sheet. Set aside.
2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat egg whites and salt together until glossy peaks form. With mixer running, add sugar in three additions beating until meringue is stiff and glossy. Sprinkle in cornstarch, vinegar, and vanilla; gently fold to combine.
3. Mound the meringue in the center of the 8-inch circle. Using a spatula, evenly spread meringue
out towards the edges, hollowing slightly in the center to allow for the whipped cream. Transfer
baking sheet to oven and immediately reduce the temperature to 250 degrees. Bake for 1 hour
and 15 minutes.
4. Turn off oven and let meringue cool completely in oven. When meringue is cool and completely
dry, top with whipped cream and desired fruits. (Optional: spread a thin layer of Chocolate
Sauce over cooled, baked meringue before adding the whipped cream and berries!)
PS...I use 8 egg whites and double the ingredients for larger groups. I create a 10 inch circle, using a
round pizza sheet as my guide.
Thank you Judy Duncan!

Tech Team:
We are putting together a Tech Team. If you have a background in event planning
and/or web site design and maintenance, we need your help.
We are looking for volunteers that will take responsibility for the development and
maintenance of our CWC website. You will work collaboratively with our current webmaster, Judy Duncan, who will lead the effort to a logical transition and turnover. We are currently transitioning from an
older HTML website tool, to the use of Squarespace, a widely used technology, which offers much more
flexibility and easier maintenance over time.
We are also looking for individuals to send and receive emails using Constant Contact, a communications based tool that we use to gather information for event planning, marketing and to distribute our
monthly Newsletter.
This tech team will work closely with the following board members: President, Delores Menge; Treasurer, Sharon Weight; Newsletter Editor, Gayle Hester; VP Programing, Judy Kocher and Sue Perls; VP
Fundraising, Ann Toillion; and VP Membership, Susie Mongelas.
For more information, contact Judy Duncan, 650-726-6677, [email protected]
OPEN INTEREST GROUP CHAIR:
Bocce Ball
The Bocce Ball Group meets once a week at La Nebbia Winery. The Bocce Ball Group meets at a specified time and plays for about an hour and a half and then enjoys snacks at the picnic tables in that lovely setting. The $5.00 cash charge goes back to CWC for Scholarship funds.
For more information, contact Delores Menge, 650-726-0101, [email protected]
CWC Bridge Tournament - Save the Date
Our first bridge tournament will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017, at the Ocean Colony
Club. We will begin at noon with an informal lunch, and then divide into three groups
(depending on number of players):
1. A group of beginners, who are new or newly returning to bridge. Each will draw for partners and
change partners every four hands;
2. A group of intermediate players who are experienced players and who play basic conventions such
as Stayman, Transfers, Blackwood and Gerber. You will play with a different partner every four hands.
3. A Duplicate game where you sign up with a partner with whom you will play all afternoon. All N/S
and E/W pairs will play the same hands and compete against each other so there are N/S winners and
E/W winners.
The cost is $25 for CWC members and guests, and all proceeds will go to our Scholarships and Charities Funds. Tell all your bridge playing friends about the game, and invite them to join in the fun!
For more information, contact Maria Grigorieff, 773-0080, [email protected]
Page 12
It’s All About Bridge
Do to popular demand, The CWC is very proud to announce that our intermediate bridge group is expanding their horizons - opening their doors
to all that want to play!
As our club has grown, so has the interest in playing bridge. A study done
by the University of California, Berkley, found strong evidence that an area
in the brain used in playing bridge stimulates the immune system. Researchers suggest that is because players must use memory, visualization
and sequencing. The study also suggested that playing bridge may slow or even prevent shortterm memory decline. As we are all aware, the more birthdays we have, the more our brains
need exercise and what better way to keep our brains sharp than playing BRIDGE!
And if you need another reason to play bridge: it is FUN, and offers an opportunity to socialize
with you new best friends.
Thanks to the hard work of Gina Echert, we have secured the Boys and Girl’s Club for Wednesday mornings from 9:45 am to 12:30 pm starting October 5.
There will be minimal fee of $3.00 for members and $5.00 for non members, to be collected at
the door. There will be no official designated snack person; but feel to bring your own if you care
to munch. There is a water fountain and bathroom on premises.
Sign up sheets will be available at the weekly Wednesday game for the upcoming weeks. An
email will also be send out after each game to those who wish to participate.
If we have to cut off a one, two or three person table, (we need four players per table) preference
will be given to the first to sign up and those one, two or three players will be put on a sub list.
Cancellations and/or additions will be much appreciated by the Monday prior to the game on
Wednesday. Scores will be collected and the winners will be announced at our annual Bridge
Luncheon.
No partner, no problem - you will have a new partner every four hands!
Once a month we will have a short lesson before play.
Everyone is welcome!!!
