1. Sun Sep 22 – MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING – 1 hr 49 min – PG-13. Much Ado
About Nothing's lighthearted energy and intimate charm make for an entertaining
romantic comedy -- and a Shakespearean adaptation that's hard to resist. Director Joss
Whedon gives Shakespeare's classic comedy a contemporary spin. Shot in just 12 days
(and using the original text), the story of sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick offers a
dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love. As
matchmaking schemes are put into play and disguises are donned, loathing and love soon
prove to be close cousins. “3 ½ Stars. Joss Whedon's fresh and cheeky adaptation of
"Much Ado About Nothing" is a minor miracle - the first filmed Shakespeare comedy in
decades that's actually funny. Don’t miss it.” – Lou Lumenick, N.Y. Post.
2. Sun Sep 29 – MORE THAN HONEY – 1 hr 31 min – Not rated but suitable for all.
MORE THAN HONEY, a new documentary by the Academy Award-nominated Swiss
filmmaker Marcus Imhoof, looks into the fascinating world of bees, showing small
family beekeepers (including the beekeeper of ERSTE Foundation beehive, Heidrun
Singer) and industrialized honey farms in California, Switzerland, China and Australia.
Through the use of point-of-view cinematography that defies the imagination, we
actually soar through the air with the bees. MORE THAN HONEY is a film about the
relationship between mankind and honeybees and about how our future is intimately tied
to the future of the world’s bee populations, which, unfortunately, are dying off at an
alarming rate. The movie shows that answers may be coming from a completely
unexpected direction. A top audience favorite at both the Vancouver International Film
Festival and IDFA (the world’s most prestigious documentary festival), More Than
Honey is an important, thought-provoking, and enriching experience. “4 Stars. Highest
Rating! Without any preachiness, this magically beautiful film urges us to take better
care of the bees, and honor the irreplaceable things that they do for us.” –Farran Smith
Nehme, N.Y. Post.
3. Sun Oct 6 – FINDING HAPPINESS – 1 hr 35 min - Finding Happiness brings a new
perspective to docudrama, presenting real people living dynamic, harmonious lives in
real communities around the world, viewed through the eyes of fictional magazine
journalist, Juliet Palmer, played by Law & Order and American Hustle star Elisabeth
Rohm. Juliet’s boss at Profiles Magazine assigns her to visit Ananda Village near
Nevada City to report on how a spiritual community has developed alternative solutions
to the world’s problems for nearly half a century. With a fair portion of skepticism and a
dash of curiosity, Juliet embarks on a professional and personal journey. She interviews
Ananda’s visionary founder and she talks with the real residents of Ananda, who answer
her questions and welcome her to a reality she had never imagined – founded on inner
happiness and freedom.
(NOTE: TWO SHOWINGS: at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm. Tickets for the 2:00 pm show
go on sale at the Nevada Theatre box office at 1:15 pm. Tickets for the 7:30 pm showing
go on sale at the Nevada Theatre box office at 2:30 pm and will be available for purchase
all afternoon until show time. The theater will be ready for seating at 6:45 pm.)
4. Sun Oct 13 – WHEN COMEDY WENT TO SCHOOL – 1 hr 16 min - This
remarkable documentary presents an entertaining portrait of this country's greatest
generation of comedians - the generation that includes the likes of Jerry Lewis, Sid
Caesar, Robert Klein, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl, Jerry Stiller, Larry King, and others, all
of whom make appearances in the film, telling jokes and telling their stories. It also has
classic, hilarious bits by Woody Allen, Joan Rivers, Jerry Seinfeld, Billy Crystal and
Rodney Dangerfield. Oh and then there’s Henny Youngman, Danny Kaye, Buddy
Hackett and Myron Cohen. “It's a very entertaining documentary, mostly because of the
entertainers it spotlights - the generations who learned their craft and went on to create
modern American humor.” –Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger.
5. Sun Oct 20 – THE ARTIST AND THE MODEL – 1 hr 44 min – R – In French and
Spanish with English subtitles. Summer of 1943. In an occupied France, not far away
from the Spanish border, a famous old sculptor (Jean Rochefort) who is tired of life and
wars finds a renewed desire to work on his last masterpiece when a beautiful young
Spanish girl comes knocking after escaping a refugee camp in the South of France. This
movie explores similar themes as “Renoir,” which we showed recently. “The lovely and
poignant drama The Artist and the Model stirringly presents art, life and death as one
irrevocably tangled trio.” –Gary Goldstein, L.A. Times.
6. Sun Oct 27 – I GIVE IT A YEAR – 1 hr 37 min – R. Since they met at a party,
ambitious high-flyer Nat and struggling novelist Josh have been deliriously happy
despite their differences. Josh is a thinker. Nat's a doer. But the spark between them is
undeniable. Their wedding is a dream come true, but family, friends and even the
minister who marries them aren't convinced that they can last. Josh's ex-girlfriend, Chloe,
and Nat's handsome American client Guy, could offer attractive alternatives. With their
first anniversary approaching, neither wants to be the first to give up, but will they make
it? “As pure comedy, it’s a hoot!” –Farran Smith Nehme, N.Y. Post.
7. Sun Nov 3 – PRINCE AVALANCHE – 1 hr 34 min – R. Driven by striking
performances from Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch, Prince Avalanche is an offbeat comedy
about two men painting traffic lines on a desolate country highway that's been ravaged by
wildfire. Against this dramatic setting, the men bicker and joke with each other,
eventually developing an unlikely friendship. Funny, meditative and at times surreal,
Prince Avalanche features a score by Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo, “A
wonderfully eccentric examination of unlikely friendships that illuminates the absurd and
lovely corners of life, Prince Avalanche is a deeply enjoyable, wondrous delight.” –
Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist.
8. Sun Nov 10 – DRINKING BUDDIES – 1 hr 30 min – R. Luke (Jake M. Johnson)
and Kate (Olivia Wilde) are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their
days drinking and flirting. They're perfect for each other, except that they're both in
relationships. Luke is in the midst of marriage talks with his girlfriend of six years; Kate
is playing it cool with her music producer boyfriend Chris. But you know what makes the
line between "friends" and "more than friends" really blurry? Beer. “An appealing cast
and fine-tuned sexual tension bolster Joe Swanberg’s latest.” –John DeFore, The
Hollywood Reporter
