GACC softball captures program’s first-ever title
With wins over Ashland-Greenwood in the Class C state softball
tournament in Hastings, Central
Catholic captured the program’s
first-ever state championship.
“We have gotten close before.
I’m just so proud of these girls,
and how they finished it off this
year. This is such a special group
of kids,” coach Allan Kreikemeier
said. “You don’t get this opportunity very often in life, and they took
full advantage of it.”

GACC gym site for God’s praise

“It’s okay to participate in
athletics, but God belongs at the
center of everyone’s life — and
without that center, life becomes
much harder,” said Blair’s Youth
Minister Jeff Zurek.
Jesus in the Eucharist was the
center at the GACC gym Archdiocesan Youth Rally Sunday afternoon, Oct. 19.
Archbishop George Lucas celebrated noon Mass with a dozen
priests and more than 300 young
people. The altar was set up on
the elevated platform on the south
side of the new gym with chairs
on the gym floor facing the altar.
Several presenters spoke on their
experiences meeting Jesus.
While this rally is usually in
Omaha, West Point was pleased to
welcome busloads of youths from
across the Northeast Nebraska
Archdiocese to our Catholic
campus to encounter Jesus in the
Blessed Sacrament in our gym.

about his UNL scholarship to pitch
for the UNL baseball team. He said
he lost sight of God, partied too
much, stopped attending class and

lost his way. He flunked out. He
finally found his way back through
confession.
There was time for food, social
breaks, music, prayer, and later
meditation and adoration in the
darkened gym, followed by the
sacrament of reconciliation with
several priests present in the old
gym.
Archbishop Lucas officiated at
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament with a resounding “Holy
God” to close.
A concert by the Catholic youth
rock band from Vancouver,
Washington,“The Thirsting,”
which is thoroughly focused on
Jesus in the Eucharist, concluded
the rally.

GACC captured a 4th place finish
at the Class C2 state volleyball tourney in Lincoln. Team

Plenty of fun delivered

Family Fun Day with the noon
dinner and afternoon auction is
a yearly community event, which
is exactly what the name implies.
Family. Fun. Auction. The event
raises money to support GACC
school.
In the GA gym at the 3 o’clock
auction break with a crowd of
several hundred people, the announcer auctioner said, “Ladies
and gentlemen, the act we’ve
been waiting for all day. It’s
finally time.
“Live from Las Vegas. Let’s
give a warm St. Mary Family
Fun Day welcome to “The Village
People.””
With the raucous loud disco
music of “YMCA,” lead vocalist
Karen Richards led the the various costumed high-kicking (as
high as they were able) Village
People chorus line into the gym
to the clever lyrics of “GACC.”
The audience sat in stunned
astonishment, not knowing what
was coming next.
The costumed “Village
People” sang, and with their
arms, formed the letters as they
stomped their feet singing the
chorus, “It’s fun to go to GACC.
It’s fun to go to GACC.”
After six stanzas, “The Village
People” sashayed totally out of
line as they received a standing
ovation from the pleased and appreciative audience.
The performance was the work
of brain stormers Connie Hagedorn Eilerts ‘80 and her sister
Alice Hagedorn Heimann ‘77
along with lead singer and Heimann’s sponsored student Karen
Richards.
The Village People were alumni

GACC football closes out season in D1 state semifinals
GACC was one win away from its third state finals appearance since 2010. The Bluejays, however, fell to BDS in the Class D1 state football semifinals

Four Sisters remain in West Point

The roots of GACC School are of
the Franciscan Sisters who arrived
by train to teach when Guardian
Angels opened its doors in March,
1885.
Although this is the first year
there is no Sister on the faculty,
four Sisters continue to work and
live in West Point in St. Mary’s
Convent.
The Sisters at St. Mary’s Convent
are:
Sister Ritarose Stahl, Kiel, Wisc.,
who is working on the hospital
archives. She was the Holy Family Convent community director,

Sister Joellen Kohlmann, the last
GACC sister to be on staff, is the
new Director of Religious Education at St. Andrew’s Parish, Sierra
Vista, Arizona.

and Sister Monica Mary DeQuardo
(former CC teachers), and Sister
Mary Beth Kornely are working at
a new mission at St. Gabriel Mercy
Center in Mound Bayou, Mississippi.
Sister Ann Spenner, of St.
Mary’s parish, West Point, was
honored for 75 years in religious
life.
Sister Elora Schmidt, former CC
principal, celebrated 60 years as a
nun.
Sister Karen Suhr, GA student
from Holy Cross, Beemer, observed
her Golden Jubilee this past summer. Her sister, Sister Rita Mae,
and her brothers Dan Suhr, ‘56 and
Wayne of California were present.
She is working at the Motherhouse
at Manitowoc.
Sister Sharon Paul, known as
the West Point St. Joseph’s ‘nunon-the-run,” observed her Golden
Jubilee this summer. Her address:
