NEBRASKA FLORISTS SOCIETY FALL SEASONS
HEARTLAND/FALL CONVENTION HELD IN OMAHA
Our Heartland/Fall Convention was held
th
th
in Omaha on October 11 and 12 at the
nd
Comfort Inn and Suites at 72 & Grover.
We would like to thank all who attended.
Our weekend was full of fun and
education.
We started the weekend off with two
hands-on classes. Kevin Smith AIFD,
CFD, NAFD showed them techniques for
putting a new twist on the basic elastic
wristlet for corsages. Molly Boulden
NAFD and Pam Cyboron NAFD taught
them to make a traditional sympathy
piece and using the same flowers, turn it
into a contemporary piece.
A very special “THANK YOU” to
DWF Wholesale Florist Omaha for
graciously providing all the product and
sponsoring both of these classes. We
truly appreciate your support!
Saturday evening was our “NEBRASKA
ACADEMY AWARDS” red carpet dinner.
Attendees were able to actually walk the
‘red carpet’ and have their photo taken in
front of our own step and repeat. As they
entered they were welcomed by
“Humphrey Vendela” aka Damon Samuel
AAF, AIFD, CFD, PFCI, NAFD, NMF.
We inducted two new Hall Of Fame
members, Jeannie Flynn and Althea
Wiest NAFD. Jeannie has spent many
years specializing in bridal work. Jeannie
has been an inspiration to many in the
floral industry. Althea has been in the
industry for many years also. She has
owned her own shop and has been a
designer for several other shops as well.
She is a very active member of the
NAFD. She has graciously accepted the
job of flower room coordinator at
Heartland many times. We are very
proud of both of these ladies and were so
pleased to be able to surprise both of
them.
Later in our dinner we inducted three new
members into the Nebraska Academy of
Floral Designers. These three, Rhonda
Bullington NAFD, Stacy Schulte NAFD,
and Gary Tharnish CFD, PFCI, NAFD
have all worked hard through
competitions to attain this award.
Our congratulations to all who were
honored. We are proud to have each
of you as a member of our Society.

how to stand out by utilizing the four “M”s of
marketing, merchandising, management, and
maintenance.

Gerry showed very creative designs as well as
inventive product displays. These are things
that every shop, whether in a larger city or a
smaller rural area, can put to use in their
business and help manage their inventory and
help maintain sales.
We truly appreciate Gerry spending his
weekend with us and sharing not only his
design talents but his marketing techniques as
well.

Rhonda Bullington NAFD, showed attendees how to connect with their clients
and reach new customers in her program “SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE FLORAL
INDUSTRY…ARE YOU CONNECTED”. She helped them see how using the free
social media can help promote and grow your business.
Steve Barton AIFD, CFD, NAFD and D. Damon Samuel AAF, AIFD, CFD, PFCI,
NAFD, NMF gave us all a new respect and love for greenery in their program,
“FLEUR DE’ GREEN…OUI, OUI”. In this program they used greenery in every
design element of their work.
This program was sponsored by FERN TRUST, BLOOMNET and Bill Doran
Company. We thank them both for their support!
During this program, Steve and Damon honored several NFS/NAFD members
that we have lost recently: Lois Hall and Al Potter were both Hall of Fame

th
AIFD Symposium 2015 celebrates their 50
anniversary and will prove to be very
exciting for The Nebraska Florists Society!
We have three of our members that will be
inducted into AIFD at this meeting. They
have all worked very hard to attain this status
and we are very proud of them.
Another exciting part of symposium will be
that Brenda Veasman AIFD, CFD, NAFD, IMF
will be presenting a program on stage. She
will be taking a ‘journey’ into the future of
design by putting a futuristic ‘twist’ on an
existing medium.
AIFD Symposium is always food for the soul
of a florist and having
it so close to us is a
perfect time to take
advantage to
attend.

Still Looking For Input
I want to start off by thanking all of you that attended and participated in this past Heartland. A great time was had by all.
But with that said, attendance was low and somewhat disappointing. We have asked in the past how to correct that and have
attempted to try some of those things. The price was lower for this meeting for one thing. We have been asked for different people to
do the educational programs. We have had very little interest from anyone wanting to step up and do a program. And have had others
that have said they would do a program and then when the time has rolled around they have bailed.
Some have said that they don't want to give up their weekends. But I doubt seriously if you can't give up a Saturday or Sunday that
you are going to give up another day.
We certainly need to work at keeping our Society strong. So please share your thoughts, comments or concerns with one of our
Board members or our President. You can also contact us via email at [email protected].
Respectfully,
Steve Barton

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
My dear fellow NFS members,
I would like to thank each of you who were able to attend our Heartland Convention this year. I wish more could have
attended to see the wonderful programs that were offered. We are truly blessed to have so many talented people in our
Society. I also want to thank all those behind the scenes for all the hours they spent making our weekend possible.
We are in such a unique industry. What we provide for people is purely a luxury. Human’s existence do not depend on
flowers but our lives are enriched with them. For the 25 years that I have been in this industry I have considered myself
fortunate to have been able to share in the joy and celebrations people have in their lives. I have felt truly honored so
many times as well to have been able to assist people express their final expression of love and respect to someone they
have lost.
I have gained so many friends by becoming a part of the Nebraska Florists Society. I have come to consider this group my
family. My life is truly richer with all of you in it.
It has been my honor and privilege to have served as President and would like to thank all of the people that have served
on the Board of Directors along with me for giving of their time and talent to help this wonderful group of professionals.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Sylvia E. Samuel NAFD
