son/daughter to submit service hours
completed this past summer by picking up a
reporting form in the school office or the
Student Life Center. Students may also
submit information on-line by going to our website.
DIRECTORY INFORMATION
Grandville Calvin Christian Schools will be publishing a
directory this fall. If you prefer not to have your name,
address or contact information listed in the directory, please
notify Gail at [email protected] before September 18.
GRANDPARENTS/GRANDFRIENDS DAY
Grandville Calvin Christian is excited to
celebrate grandparents and their impact on
the lives of our students as a community
this year. This day is always a highlight for
students, too, as they get the opportunity to celebrate
these special people in their lives. This year’s date is
scheduled for Friday, September 30.
Grandparents Day begins on the Calvin Christian
School Campus for middle and high school visits. We
start with an assembly in the high school gym at 9:30
a.m. followed by visits at 10:00 am. Brunch will be
served beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the middle school
gym. Grandparents Day continues on the Grandville
Christian Elementary School campus at 1:00 p.m. until
3:00 p.m.
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Mark your calendars now for the fall
Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled
for the following dates and times:
If you have questions about our service requirement,
please contact our Chaplain, Brad Zwiers at
[email protected] or call 538-0990, ext. 235.
CLOSE UP 2017
Parents of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, think
NATIONAL CLOSE UP 2017! Give your
child the experience of being in
Washington D.C.
The program this year will likely take place in early
May and the cost will be approximately $1,800 which
includes lodging, transportation, and meal expenses.
Each year students decrease the cost through a
couple of fund raisers.
You are invited to get more information from Mr.
Weeda about Close Up 2016-17 in Room 66
following our Open House on September 6.
PARKING PERMITS
Parking permits are required of all student
drivers. Parking permit forms can be found
on our website and in the high school
office.
The cost of a parking permit is $3.00,
unless you have one from last year. Then
you simply bring it in and exchange it for a
new one. Parking permits from siblings
who graduated last year will not be
accepted.
Thursday, October 13, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, October 18, from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday, October 19, from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.
(**school dismissed at 11:30 a.m.)
Parking permits will be available in the
high school office beginning the week of
September 6 and the deadline for
acquiring one for this school year is
September 30. They are available
throughout the school year, however, as
needs arise.
CHAPELS
Chapels this year are scheduled for the following
days/times during the week. Parents are invited to
attend these chapels.
Wednesdays from 11:42 – 11:59 a.m.
Fridays from 7:47 – 8:04 a.m.
SIDEKICKS
Parents does your student have the gift of
being able to eat lunch with students who
need someone to come alongside them and
be a friend? Do they have a study hall once a
week that they would give up to help a peer with their
homework? Does your student like to attend events
outside of the school day that they could bring a student in
the inclusion program along with them?
TEXTBOOK RENTAL
Students are responsible for the textbooks assigned to
them in each class. If students lose or
damage a book, they will be charged for a
replacement.
If so, please encourage your student to sign up for
our Sidekicks program. If you or your students have any
questions, please contact Ms. Krista DeVries at
[email protected]
USED BAND & ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENTS
If you have a band or orchestra instrument you wish to
sell and would like it included in the Calvin/Grandville
Used Instruments File, please contact Mr. Karel Malefyt
at [email protected] with the following
information:
Contact information, instrument type, brand name,
approximate age and condition, asking price.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS NEEDED
We need your help. We would love to expand our list of
substitute teachers at Grandville Calvin
Christian. This is a great opportunity for
parents, grandparents and former students
to be a part of this community and to
participate in the Christ-centered education
of our children. If you are interested in
learning more about this opportunity,
please contact Joy Betten at [email protected].
This information will be posted on the website for
beginning band/orchestra parents. If you have
questions about condition or value, you can have the
instrument appraised at Meyer Music.

NOTICE TO PARENTS OF JUNIORS
The 2016 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/ National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will be
offered at Calvin Christian High School on Wednesday,
October 19. The test fee is $15.00.
The test provides a practice experience for college
entrance exams, as well as entering the student in the
nationwide scholarship contest conducted by the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation. The test covers verbal,
mathematical, and writing abilities. The PSAT/NMSQT
tests a student’s ability to reason with facts and concepts
rather than to recall or recite them. Students are not
asked to answer questions about grammar, recall facts
from literature, or recognize mathematical formulas.
Instead, they are given verbal and mathematical
information and asked to reason with it. The test will be
explained by the counselors in one of the student’s
classes. Students will also receive a student bulletin that
explains the test in greater detail and contains a sample
test for each section of the PSAT. There is also a section
in the bulletin that explains the available scholarships.
The total test time is 2 hours, 45 minutes.
Note: For more information on the PSAT/NMSQT go to
www.collegeboard.com/PSAT

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT
On January 8, 2002, President Bush signed into
law the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 as part of
the Elementary and Secondary Education Act
(ESEA) since ESEA was enacted in 1965. It
redefines the federal role in K-12 education.
Section 9528 of the ESEA requires each school
that receives funds (such as professional
development funds) under the ESEA to provide, on
request by a military recruiter or an institution of
higher education, access to the names, addresses,
and telephone listings of secondary students.
However, parents may request that such information
NOT be released for their child without prior written
parental consent.
Therefore, if you as a parent wish that your child’s
information NOT be released, contact the high school
office in order to complete a form indicating your
preference.

for your student(s):



Hot lunch is available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for all students and staff of Calvin Christian


“Punch Card” tickets are required to get a lunch every time, for each individual. There are absolutely
NO exceptions to this rule. You must have a valid Punch Card to receive a lunch.

Punch cards may be purchased at any time and are valid for any lunch during the current school year.
The cost of each lunch will be $3.50. Cards are available in the amount of $17.50 (5 punches) or
$35.00 (10 punches). Punch card order forms may be dropped off at the Middle School or High
School office, or may be mailed to the school. Unused cards do not carryover to the next school
year.

Card orders placed by noon on Wednesday will be available for pick-up that Friday before school. All

PLACING YOUR ORDERS.

High School students and staff must have their 5 hour (Mon/Fri) and 4th hour (Wed) class
written on their punch card. Middle School students and staff must have their Home Room #

will then take your lunch back to your home room (MS) or wherever you choose (HS) to eat.

If you want to purchase more than one lunch for that day, please circle (with a pen) the number of
spots. Example, 2 lunches, circle 2 of the unpunched numbers. Nothing circled assumes 1 lunch

punches you have left on your card to be sure to reorder in time.
