Dear Charger Community,
This spring we will complete the accreditation progress
through AdvancED (http://www.advanc-ed.org/).
Accreditation occurs every five years, and is in place
“to ensure that all learners realize their full potential.”
Preparation for the visit includes the completion of a
number of documents related to school practices and
student achievement, and involves completing a
comprehensive self-assessment of McClintock’s status
in relation to the AdvancED standards. This includes an analysis of the
data from the survey that was administered to our staff, students, and
parents.
The underlying goal of the accreditation process is to support school
improvement and at McClintock we are committed to the idea that the
status quo will never be good enough for our community. Instead, we rely
on continuous reflection of programs, curriculum, and instructional
practices to ensure that we are always moving forward. This work is
accomplished in committees by staff, students, and parents who are
dedicated to the ongoing improvement

2. We will increase the pass rate for freshmen and sophomore classes.

Students at McClintock have the opportunity to
take advantage of career and technical
education at EVIT. EVIT is in the top 10 career
and technical centers in the country and has
received the A+ accreditation by the Arizona
Educational Foundation. Students who attend
EVIT spend half a day at McClintock and half a
day at EVIT. Transportation is provided by the
District.
During registration for the 2016-2017 school
year, a student may request an EVIT program
on his/her course request sheet for enrollment.
They will be contacted in March to fill out the
EVIT application form.

ONLINE SYSTEM MATCHES
STUDENTS WITH SCHOLARSHIPS
The Arizona Community Foundation has an online scholarship
portal that allows students to apply for more than 60 scholarships
with a single online application. The system automatically
matches each applicant with every scholarship for which he or
she qualifies.
High school seniors attending schools anywhere in the U.S. can
apply. Scholarships are available for two-year and four-year
colleges and universities as well as technical schools. Some
awards are given based on merit or financial need, while others
are awarded to students in a particular geographic region or with
specific demographic characteristics.

workshops at the City of Tempe website.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and
scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by
taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This
test serves as the initial screening for the approximately 1.5 million entrants each year.
In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high
scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their
outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally
applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year. Although Commended Students
do not continue in the National Merit competition, some do become candidates for Special
Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

ID Cards
Students are required to wear their
McClintock ID card
at all times
when at school.
All students will receive a free ID card for the 2015-16 school
year. Free lanyards may be available; check at the Guidance
Office or ask Ms. Edwards.
If a student loses this ID card, a replacement may be
purchased at the bookstore for $5.00.
The ID card also serves as the student’s library card, so it is
necessary for checking out library materials.
Closed Campus
McClintock High School has a modified closed
campus.
Juniors and seniors are allowed to leave campus
during lunch by showing their McClintock student I.D.
cards to the security guard on duty.
All freshmen and sophomores are required to remain
on campus. Any student who must leave campus
during the school day, except for juniors and seniors
during lunch, must have a parent-approved, offcampus pass obtained through the Attendance Office.
INSUFFICIENT FUNDS POLICY
Tempe Union High School District has contracted with CCM
Enterprises to collect insufficient funds checks received by our
schools. Notification of this is posted in the bookstores, child care
areas, and cafeterias on each campus. By making payment via
check, a Parent or Legal Guardian is giving TUHSD authorization
to electronically debit their account for the returned check amount,
plus fees, if the check should be returned by the bank.

On Tuesday, December 1, from
9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., Smiles
of Christmas will return to the
McClintock campus. This event provides a day of fun for
children from local Section 1 schools. Now in its fourteenth
year, Smiles of Christmas is a chance for our High school
students to not only give their time to the less fortunate, but also
for them to learn about the life experiences of others.
The Tempe Union High School District has been involved in the program for the
past twelve years. Approximately 250 children from Thew and Ed Pastor
Elementary Schools will be matched with students from McClintock, Desert
Vista, Tempe, Mountain Pointe, Marcos De Niza, Corona del Sol, and Cesar
Chavez. Each high school student sponsors a gift for one of the elementary
school children. The MHS Student Council also sponsors games and other
activities for the visiting students. This year, the Student Council is planning to
have visits with Santa Claus, field activities, snow, lunch with
treats, and a craft area
where the students can
color, and paint a castle
bank from As You Wish.
Smiles of Christmas is a great
volunteer opportunity for students.
The MHS Speech & Debate Team had a stellar showing at the first big tournament of the season at
Mountain View in mid-November. The team finished in 2nd place overall out of 41 teams! Bravo!

Through Changing Hands Bookstore’s
“Books for Schools” Program
There are countless wonderful books to explore, and we'd like
our students to read them all. You can help the McClintock
Library achieve that goal through Changing Hands Bookstore’s
“Books for Schools” program.
Every year, Changing Hands gives away thousands of dollars in books through their “Books for
Schools” program. Anyone can earn free books for the McClintock Library when they shop at
Changing Hands year round. Just mention “Books for Schools” and the McClintock Library at
checkout. Instead of receiving Readers Club Card stamps or other promotions, Changing Hands will
record a credit to the McClintock Library in the amount of 15% of the pre-tax total.
Use your everyday and holiday shopping to build the McClintock Library collection. Except for
special orders, all merchandise counts towards the total – not only new and used books, but cards,
calendars, music, and gifts as well.

The main responsibilities for the Academics Office are curriculum,
instruction, the Master Schedule, and graduation. If you have any
questions about a student’s schedule, please feel free to contact us. Any
issues that arise due to attendance or discipline concerns for all
sophomores, and for seniors with last names beginning with P-Z, will be
handled in this office.
Many infractions are directly related to a student’s graduation status.
Although we try our best to make sure everyone graduates on time, it is
ultimately the student’s responsibility to ensure that behavior during the
school year does not affect graduation status.

MHS teachers post their grades online. If you have
access to the Internet, this may be an easy way for you
and your child to keep track of day-to-day academic
progress.

Parents are now able to view a wide range of their student's information
online. ParentVUE allows parents to monitor their student's academic
progress, attendance records, and more.

Students who arrive late to first period must
have a parent/guardian walk them into the
attendance office to receive a pass to first period.
A phone call from a parent/guardian will no longer be accepted

A student loses the opportunity to earn credit for a
course when eleven total absences (excused and
unexcused) are reached in any individual class during
a semester. All attendance records can be view using
ParentVUE.
If you want to excuse your student’s absences, phone
the Attendance Office no later than the morning of the
absence at 480-839-4222, ext. 60008. If you know
ahead of time, it is always best to call during the days
prior to an anticipated absence.

We are proud to offer students a variety of over 50 different organizations
and clubs on campus. MHS has various activities and
performances throughout the year. The Activities Office
also handles the discipline and attendance issues for
all juniors, and for seniors with last names beginning
with A-F.

Student Handbook/Academic Planner
The Student Academic Planner for McClintock High School was distributed to
students earlier this quarter. It is strongly recommended that parents/guardians
review the handbook with their students. The information contained in the
McClintock High School Academic Planner is specific to McClintock High School
and may differ from other schools that students have attended.
If you did not get a 2014-2015 Academic Planner, you can pick one up in the Activities Office.

The Tempe Union High School Policy Handbook is available online. Please note
that it is not necessary to sign in to read the handbook; simply click on Section J
- Students to open. Please take the time to review and discuss the information
contained in this handbook with your student.
Counseling Is Available Through the City of Tempe
One of the ways the City of Tempe actively supports its mission to make Tempe the best place to live,
work, and play is through its Counseling Program. The program, with offices located on the second
floor of the Tempe Public Library, provides counseling for individuals, couples, and families, and has
done so for over 25 years.
Tempe residents, and anyone with a child attending a school in Tempe, who cannot get counseling
services elsewhere (for example, through their health insurance or AHCCCS) are eligible for services.
Counseling issues include depression, anxiety, stress, parent/child issues, partner relationship
problems, sexual abuse, grief, trauma, domestic violence, substance abuse, and other emotional and
behavioral issues. The city’s therapists are Licensed Professional Counselors and Master’s-level
counselors.
Services are available in English and Spanish.
Fees are $5 to $40 per session based on family size and income.
Counseling is strictly confidential.

School pride, morale, and image are influenced by the
general appearance of our students. McClintock High
School expects a students’ dress and grooming to
reflect high standards of personal conduct so that each
student’s attire promotes a positive, safe, and healthy
atmosphere within our school.

school attire.
Sunglasses will not be
worn indoors.
Hats and other accessories
may be prohibited or
allowed at faculty/staff

Guidelines for School
Dances
School dances are meant to be fun
and memorable.
Please help us make the dances a
positive experience for all students.
Behavior at dances that may
embarrass students and their
families is not tolerated. Dirty
dancing, grinding, or other
suggestive dancing will be not
tolerated. Purses, bags, and clothing
will be searched at the door for items
considered to be inappropriate at a
dance. Items such as drink
containers, water bottles, or any item
that may contain an illegal substance
will not be allowed inside the door.
Students who arrive under the
influence will be referred to the
police officer on duty, their parents
will be notified, and the students will
be subject to school discipline.
Dances start at 8:00 p.m. and
end promptly at 11:00 p.m.

Cell phones have
become an interruption
to classroom instruction. Cell
phones and other electronic
devices may not be used during
class time and must be turned off
and stored out of sight. If a
student uses a phone for any
reason during class time, it can
be confiscated by the teacher.
If any electronic device
disrupts the education
process, appropriate
disciplinary action will be
taken, including
suspension.
On the first violation, the device
will confiscated and turned in to
the Administration. The student
may reclaim it after school that
day.
On the second violation, the
student’s parents must pick the
device up from Administration.
A third violation will result in two
days of off-campus suspension.
Lost and stolen electronic
devices are the responsibility of
the student, and use of these
items are at the student’s own
risk for loss/theft. McClintock is
not responsible for stolen or
missing electronic devices, and
it is strongly recommended
these devices not be brought to
campus.
Congratulations to Mrs. Gerrich and McClintock’s
choir students. MHS had seven students from the
choir program make either the All-State Show or
the Jazz Choirs. This is the highest number of
MHS students that have ever made this event. It is

What is Challenge Day?
The Challenge Day mission is
to provide youth and their
communities with experiential
programs that demonstrate the
possibility of love and
connection through the
celebration of diversity, truth,
and full expression. The day is designed to inspire a
diverse group of students to model positive peer
interactions for our school.
Together, these students have the greatest potential to
shift the norms of their peers and therefore to shift the
overall school climate. Thanks to the
Tempe Police Department and
Tempe Human Relations Commission
(as well as community adult
volunteers), we're able to host
Challenge Day a second year in a row.

On Saturday, Sept. 26 the Kahns and 30 Peggy Payne Academy students volunteered at the
Tim Barber POP (Prostate Cancer) Walk at Kiwanis Park. They arrived at 5:30 a.m. to set up
all of the booths, place
signage along the walk,
blow up a ton of balloons,
cheer on walkers, and
hand out water.
Then they stayed to clean
everything up at the end!

Roll. Honor Roll students also received
either two passes to a home athletic event
or drama department production, or an

The McClintock Marching Band has had a terrific year. On Saturday,
September 26, the Marching Band was at the "Thunder in the Hills Marching
Invitational" at Desert Vista. The band received first place in the competition,
receiving special caption awards in Music Performance, General Effect, and Percussion.
The following weekend, on Saturday, October 17, at the Corona del Sol Marching Invitational, the
band again finished in first place, with special caption awards in Musical Performance, Visual
Performance, General Effect, Percussion Performance, and Color Guard Performance.
On Saturday, October 24, the band was competing at Ironwood Ridge High School. There, they
received a rating of "Excellent" as well special caption awards in Music Performance, Visual
Performance, General Effect, Percussion Performance, and Auxiliary Performance.
They followed this up at the Saturday, October 31 competition by receiving a rating of "Excellent"
and another five special caption awards.
Over the weekend of November 7th, the band started with playing host to over 26 schools from
across the state during the 2015 ABODA State Marching Band Festival. In addition to the hosting
responsibilities, the marching band students followed up with performing at their highest level,
receiving a rating of "Excellent" and two special caption awards in Music Performance and
Auxillary Performance. This qualified the Charger Marching Band for a spot in the 2015 ABODA
State Marching Band Championships.
The State Marching Band Championships are composed of the top ten bands from each division in
the state of Arizona. Not only were the Chargers performing in the top ten, but through their hard
work, they were in their division’s top 5!
The State Championships were held on November 14th at Glendale Community College. The
Charger Band focused their energy and had their best performance of the season, coming in at
second place against some fierce competition.

The AIA has decided student athletes need to be aware of concussions. Each athlete will be
completing a concussion awareness test called the Brain Book. The student will print out a
certificate at the completion of the test and submit it to the athletics office.

Each athlete participating in a spring sport has until Feb. 8th to complete
the Brain Book.

Co-ed Spiritline
At the end of October, Marco Groves made an incredible
run through the 138-pound weight class up in Las Vegas at
one of the largest national wrestling tournaments. After
losing in the 4th round, Marco won seven straight matches
in the consolations to capture 3rd place in a 128-man
bracket. He finished 10-1 in the two-day tournament.
His brother Gator lost by one point in his opening bout at
132 pounds, but battled back five straight wins in the
consolations before bowing out with another close loss.

Congratulations to Erin Granillo-Walker, Zaria Guignard and Lena Nguyen for being
accepted into a yearlong leadership development program with Inspire Arizona as Inspire
Leaders!
Inspire Arizona is part of Inspire U.S., a program of Project High Hopes, which is a 501(c)3
foundation engaging in innovative programs aimed at enhancing civic responsibility. The
United States was founded upon belief that it is the right of all citizens to express their views
and participate in decision-making processes for the betterment of their community, state,
and country. As a strictly nonpartisan program, Inspire U.S. works with high school juniors
and seniors to prepare them for this responsibility.
The three pillars of the Inspire U.S. program are:
Leadership -- students learn effective leadership, communication, and organizing skills,
beginning with the summer Leadership Academy
Democracy -- students conduct voter registration efforts aimed at registering at least
85% of their school's senior class
Community -- students design and implement projects which positively impact issues
that affect their communities
Robotics Club
The Charger Robotics students went down to Tucson on November 17 and
took 1st place at the Tucson Tussle Competition at Palo Verde High School.
This
off-season event was a rematch of last season's competition, with many of the
same teams that were faced during the main competition.
The students were very excited about attending this event, and are looking forward to starting up this year's build season, which begins the week of Jan 11.

looking for programmers, builders, and designers. It's not too late!
