The i n t e r p r e t i n g and visualizing of music by bodily movement is one of
the v i t a l phases of this present-day renaissance of the dance.
This particular group of nine dancers, produced at Denishawn, specializes
in the analytic study of music i n its relation to dance.
Part I of the program begins w i t h Bach, where each part of the invention
and each voice of the fugue is danced by a separate group of dancers, the whole
blending as harmoniously as the music does i n sound.
The correlative progression i n movement w i t h the program is carried on
from fundamental r h y t h m i c movements of geometric design i n the first part
to i n d i v i d u a l i z a t i o n of movement and subtlety of expression i n the second part.
The s t r u c t u r a l principles of the dance developed and set f o r t h i n the early part
of the program are given a r t f o r m and elaborated t o w a r d the end of the program.
Song and movement are the only two pure personal arts. Voice was the
first p r i m i t i v e accompaniment to dance. R h y t h m , bodily movement and voice
constitute the ground w o r k for a l l personal a r t . For t h a t reason we are placing the voice on the same program w i t h dance visualization and later propose
to show the development of the i n t i m a t e relationship between voice and dance,
as suggested i n the number by Mr. Rhodes and Miss Niles.
Their program of music visualization is the result of over three years of
t r a i n i n g by Miss St. Denis and Mr. Shawn.

In presenting the Gallo English Opera Company,in a repertoire of revivals
of the old favorite l i g h t operas Messrs. Gallo and M i l l s are doing so i n the
belief t h a t these operas deserve a permanent place i n operatic l i t e r a t u r e quite
as i m p o r t a n t as t h a t of Grand Opera.
Replete w i t h beautiful melodies, picturesque settings and clean cut humor,
the operas of the Gilbert and Sullivan school present a s t r i k i n g contrast to the
musical comedies and " g i r l shows" of the present day regime.
It is the purpose of the management to give these operas w i t h painstaking
fidelity to t r a d i t i o n a l detail. No money has been spared to produce them w i t h
the same elaborate vestment of scenery and costumes w h i c h characterized t h e i r
o r i g i n a l production, and w i t h a company chosen for the i n d i v i d u a l a b i l i t y to
p o r t r a y the roles for which they have been cast. The company is a SINGING
organization. A large chorus of fresh young voices selected f r o m the studios
of New Y o r k , an augmented orchestra under one of the best k n o w n conductors
in the country, and a large cast of distinguished principals, the Gallo English
Opera Company inaugurates a new era of l i g h t opera i n America; a r e t u r n to
the d e l i g h t f u l operas of days gone by, when good singing as w e l l as acting
constituted the standard by which performances were judged.
