Welland International Flatwater Centre
The Welland International Flatwater Centre’s ribbon cutting ceremony held on
July 10th, 2013, also marked the two year countdown until the venue will host
Canoekayak Sprints as part of the TO2015 Pan Am Games.
The Centre boasts almost eight kilometres of deep, placid water, making it an
ideal spot for hosting fast-paced paddling sports. In fact, the name Welland
comes from a Celtic word meaning “good river.”
In preparation for the Games, TO2015 widened a section of the canal to meet
international competition standards, built two new buildings, including a
timing tower and the athlete centre, and added a plaza, start towers and
permanent seating for 500 spectators.
In addition, a state-of-the-art, multi-sport training tank has been installed in the new athlete centre. The tank will enable Canadian high-performance athletes and
fledging local paddlers to perfect their strokes in the off-season in a controlled testing environment against a variable current.
The 2015 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships will be hosted at the Welland International Flatwater Centre
in Welland, Ontario, Canada from August 18-23, 2015.
Cheer on your nation this summer in Welland, Canada as the best dragon
boat paddlers from around the globe compete on the world stage.
The International Dragon Boat Federation holds a World Nations Champi­
onships every other year in odd years. Each country member of IDBF can
enter one crew in each class. IDBF regulations apply for international
competitions.
Crews and clubs that compete internationally are encouraged to familiar­
ize themselves with these regulations.
Boat Championships (August 14 – 16) and the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) 12th
World Dragon Boat Racing Championships (August 19-23).
Attracting up to 4,000 participants from more than 30 countries, Dragon

The $15.8 million Youngs Sportsplex opened in December 2012. The
complex features four indoor tennis courts, an indoor FIFA regulationsized soccer field, and five outdoor fields. Of the five outdoor fields, two
will be turf fields, while the other three will be grass. With the nearest
facility of this kind being in Hamilton, and having only one indoor field,
the new complex will serve the City of Welland and the entire Niagara

MERRITT PARK AMPHITHEATRE
Located in Merritt Park, this 750 seat, natural amphitheatre was cut into the
east bank of the Welland Recreational Waterway to serve as permanent seating
for local musical and theatrical events that take place on the water. The stone
stepped amphitheatre overlooks a floating stage on the water and the beauti­
ful scenery of the Old Welland Canal. The IlluminAqua festival and Concerts on
the Canal are held at this location every year in the summer months.
NIAGARA FOOD FESTIVAL
The Niagara Food Festival is a three-day food festival held in historic
Downtown Welland, on the first weekend in September. “The
Peninsula’s Tastiest Party” welcomes more than 85,000 visitors to
enjoy the fabulous food, entertainment and scenic beauty that
Welland has to offer.
