This is not a traditional scientific work with
all its analytical and lyrical digression, though
scrupulous scientific analysis would suit this
book very much.
This is not an art photo album created
by super-modern cameras, every page of
which would adorn the home interiors of “new
Georgians” and would become the proof of
veneration of its owner for Tbilisi.
This is not a super-complete catalogue
where its every constitutive element is
systemized and the parameters of size and
weight sing and dance in a ring of mutual
comparison...
This is the document confirming a love of
Tbilisi and the sad present of an ancient city,
a document created in 2012-13 by mutual
agreement between the person madly in love
with Tbilisi, wandering along its streets, and his
small Panasonic camera.
Tbilisi is in me since my childhood
– beginning with Nadia Unapkoshvili’s
kindergarten in Tskhakaia street – finishing with
the Art Academy in Griboedov street – from the
first, then 47th schools, passing Engels street,
where I was born, Japaridze street, where my
granny lived, Mechnikov street, where my grand
parents lived, then dropping in art workers’
house, so called Stella, Gorki and Arto parks....
During these wanderings numerous caryatids
and Atlantes, devils and lions, playing Puttyboys of Barocco and Classicism, ornaments
and plants of Art Nouveau or Art Deco were
looking at me from the building facades... Dark
entrances were still lit by sun rays of the 5060’s, penetrating through colored stained-glass
windows
This is the first book in a collection of
architectural details of Tbilisi dating from the
first half of the 19th century and the beginning

Tbilisi has always been the melting pot of
eastern and western, European and Asian and
Christian and Muslim traditions, creating the
style which is called the Tbilisi style...
First of all, my gratitude belongs to the
people, without whose assistance this book
wouldn’t see light of the day – my friend Guram
Odisharia and his colleagues, real professionals
Marine Mizandari and Tamar Lortkipanidze.
I wish to recollect all those who have
passed on, those who took away love for
Tbilisi with them: my parents, Longinoz
Sumbadze and Deniza Gozalishvili, my
teachers, Vakhtang Beridze, Leo Rcheulishvili,
Valerian Kedia, Mikheil Chkhikvadze, Archil
Kurdiani, Toni Kalandarishvili, close friends
Gia Tskhovrebadze, Misha Soloviov, Lova
Saprazian, to whose respectful memory this
book is dedicated.
I want to thank all my friends, colleagues
and all those people who have assisted
me in forming the idea and then in its
realization... Special thanks to Gia Javelidze,
who generously presented me the camera
which has played a decisive role in the
implementation of this project.
I want to separately note with appreciation
Facebook – where approbation of this project
actually happened and by the spiritual
assistance of users of which this work has been
performed.
And finally, I would like to apologize to
those entrances and their owners who couldn’t
get into this book because of this or that
reason.
I hope this book will appear to be useful for
the professionals and people fond of Tbilisi.

In the beginning of the 19-th century Georgia,
and especially Tbilisi, experienced dramatic
changes in social and cultural life. Georgia
became incorporated into Russian Empire and
Tbilisi lost its status of the capital while keeping
important administrative role not only for
Georgia but the entire region of the Southern
Caucasus.

Historically Tbilisi has been an international
city, a melting pot of traditions and languages of
many peoples – Georgians, Armenians, Jews,
Persians and Azerbaijanis.
From the beginning of the 19-th century
Russians, Poles, Germans, French and Italians
joined in.
Population of the city, previously comprised
mostly of artisans and small traders has
expanded to include new circles of bureaucrats,
industrialists, military and white collar workers.
New social and economic qualities defined core
changes in the city architecture.
Feudal lifestyle started to change rapidly and
Tbilisi began to resemble more and more a
city pushed by capitalism. New, central city
parts were differentiated by regular planning
and were filled with administrative and private
buildings constructed according to plans
approved by the City Hall. New streets and
avenues reflected the citizens` ambition to be
European, which is in stark contrast with the old

parts of Tbilisi – chaotic construction, narrow
streets, typical small houses with facades
carrying wooden balconies and outbuilding
staircases.
Facades and interiors of these new houses
were in line with demands and ambitions of
the new class – bourgeoisie. The architectural
pseudo-styles were examples of Classicism,
Gothic, Moorish styles. Some of the new parts
of “European” houses were entrance halls and
internal staircases. Richly gilded, decorated
with balustrades, multi-coloured paintings,
stained-glass, mosaic and wrought iron details,
Tbilisi entrance halls mirrored their owners`
wealth and their ambition.
Front doors to these lavish entrances were
made of solid wood, embellished with carved
ornaments. Upper parts of the doors tended to
be protected by wrought or hammered iron.
Top panels over the doors were not unusual
and porches were adorned with lacy details.
Entrance halls` doors were made in local
workshops according to patterns but some
were custom made, and these were special
by their original design. Cast iron ornaments,
dressed-up door handles made beautiful
finishing touches. Unfortunately, many of them
are lost.
Once the visitors would find themselves in the
welcome shade of the porch and open the
heavy door they would step into festive space
of an entrance hall. A chandelier would be
suspended from the centre of a high ceiling,
further in, at the stairs a lamp would be placed
on a special, elevated stand. Daylight would
stream in through the stained glass of top
panels over the doors or through sky lights.
Entrance hall interiors were decorated from
floor to ceiling, from richly embellished
entrance door to ceiling of the last floor. Lavish
mosaic and marble floors tried to overdo the

ceiling paintings, ornaments of wrought iron
balustrades seemed to be more elaborate in
the light of coloured stained glass windows.
Typical for that time and epoch, different styles
– from pseudo-classicism to oriental - and
motives were used. This tendency shows us
well how much natives of Tbilisi loved colour,
how inventive were artists, how much interest
there was to know other cultures and how well
it all mixed together.
As time went by, ostentatious eclecticism of the
mid-19th century gave way to a new style.
The change started in Europe, where in the
second half of the 19th century architecture,
decorative and applied arts get captured
by Modernism (Art Nouveau, Jugendstil,
Secession, etc.).
By the beginning of the 20th century “Modern”
reached Tbilisi. Light, dynamic, floral motives
flowed freely into the decoration of interiors.
They seemed to roll from ceilings to walls,
and were echoed in the iron of balustrades.
Entrance halls got lighter and homogeneous in
terms of style. At the same time they got more
unpretentious.
And this is how, life of the city where East and
West, old and new merge, has found distinctive
outlet in its entrance halls. Both owners and
employees were people from different ways of
life and cultures. Old walls bring to us some of
the names, names of foreign, European artist
and Tbilisi artisans and painters who worked
by their side – Georgians, Armenians, Iranians,
Greeks…
At the turn of the century there were a few
workshops in Tbilisi – those of painters and
wood carvers, masons, as well as workshops
of Italian masters – Villa and Rici, Duranti, A.
Andreoletti. Angelo Andreoletti was importing
sculptures and materials – marble, ceramic
tiles, samples and moulds for plaster decoration
for interiors and exteriors.

In some cases painted decorations were done
to European samples too, the samples being
presented in special magazines and albums.
Only the most special parts of interiors would
be customised.
Entrance hall decoration was a tradition widely
spread not just in Tbilisi but all over Russian
Empire, continuing till WWI and vanishing with
the arrival of the Soviet statehood.
Entrance halls in Tbilisi are an organic part
of old city`s colourful ambiance. They take
an unsuspecting visitor by surprise, exuding
shabby charm and sense of nostalgic
reminiscence. Almost all of the halls have
cracks in the walls, ornaments faded and
damaged; wall paintings painted over. Some of
the original hand - carved wooden doors have
been replaced by generic metal contraptions,
stained glass lost. Old Tbilisi still lives on in
these houses, but it is in dire need of help.
