By the time this letter goes into print all traces of
the mildest winter in 40 years will be gone. Here in
Western Washington there were not many traces left
to begin with. We seem to be on the positive side of
Climate Change at least for now.
May is “Women Rider’s Month” and in
recognition of that we have a great two page
story on the legendary Van Buren Sisters
who in 1916 went coast to coast on two new
Indian Motorcycles by themselves, at a time
when women had few rights or expectations,
and there was no interstate highway system or
even decent roads in most parts of the country.
It’s quite a story. Obviously, things have
changed as women now account for almost
20% of new motorcycle sales. That number
is rising steadily and has been for years.
Manufacturers, dealers, after market suppliers
and event organizers are all pursuing this
growing new market with great commercial
zeal. Women walking into dealerships are no
longer subjected to lines like “Where’s your
Hubby?” or being ignored all together. Yes,
there are still some Neanderthals out there
but they are, thankfully, few and far between.
Events still have some catching up to do but
that is happening as well. We won’t go into
details other than to say that many events
have moved away from wet T shirt contests
and other similar nonsense. That type of
behavior is offensive and disrespectful to
the vast majority of women who ride and
who also attend events. Times change as do
attitudes, and smart business owners and
event organizers who are dragging their feet
need to catch up. It’s 2015 people! Several new
studies see women accounting for 25% of all
new bike sales by 2020 or sooner. The Van
Buren sisters would be thrilled!
CALENDAR: As many of you have
noticed our “Ride & Events” calendar grew
dramatically last month and again this month.
This comes from event and ride organizers
taking full advantage of us listing an event as
soon as it comes in even if the event is in August
or September or even later. The “sooner you
send it, the longer we can run it” concept has
really struck a responsive cord with riders. So
make sure you get your listings in as soon as
possible, and if for some reason something in
the listing changes, just notify us and we will
make the correction in the following month’s
MAY 2015
edition. This will be an action packed riding
season even if you can’t make the 75th in
Sturgis, with lots of things to do right here in
your own backyards. Just remember that you
must submit your event info no later than the
10th of the previous month.
TUNES: More surveys to quote. Fastest
growing and most wanted riding accessory
is by far a good onboard Stereo system.
Many new “handlebar” units have BluTooth capability, amps built into the speaker
housings and more, at very reasonable prices.
Fairing mounted units with speakers in both
the fairings as well as the saddlebags have also
gained great acceptance and are now almost
common place on all big touring bikes. Lots
of local dealers can give you some pretty
dramatic systems at very competitive prices
and most systems can be installed in a few
hours. Check them out.
THE FLAT EARTH SOCIETY: As many
regular readers know I am an avowed ‘anti
hand held cell phone while driving’ person.
Be it texting or talking its just plain stupid and
very dangerous, especially for those of us on
two or three wheels. Recently our Washington
State Legislators had a golden opportunity to
put more teeth into our existing “distracted
driving” law. For reasons that are almost mind
bogglingly foolish, these elected boneheads
failed to muster the necessary votes needed to
pass that measure into law. This, on the heels
of literally destroying the lane splitting bill
by making so many changes to it that it was
virtually unrecognizable, and then failing to
even pass that. Is there any wonder why I refer
to these so called “public servants” as the flat
earth society? Can they not see the need to fix
this when study after study says that distracted
drivers are even more deadly and more
dangerous then impaired drivers? Have they
not looked around as they drive and see driver
after driver on their cells or looking down at
their crotches for the latest text from another
moron who is also driving and texting? How’s
this for a wake up call: Within 2 weeks of the
bill failing to pass there were THREE fatal
accidents all caused by distracted drivers in
western WA alone. Two were texting, one was
talking. Next year is an election year. Let’s
replace these do nothing “legislators” with
some people who at least have the common
sense to recognize a serious problem and will
act to correct it. I witnessed a fender-bender
right in front of me yesterday because the
driver at fault was yacking on her cell phone!
OCEAN SHORES: While I am in a “tell it
like it is” mode I would like to point out to the
many thousands of you that’ll make the trek
to Ocean Shores for the “27th Annual Sun
and Surf ” event, that virtually none of the
local businesses have taken a dime out of their
own pockets to support one of the biggest and
oldest charity events in the northwest. With
these Ocean Shores business owners, it’s all
take and no give. They raise their prices for
the weekend, gouge where they can and show
their so-called “support” by stuffing their
pockets with your money and not a dime
of that makes it to the Sun and Surf charity
event. Hey, would it kill those greedy business
owners to show some love to a longtime event
that helps line their pockets every year? They
could all easily step up and become a small
event sponsor knowing that the money goes
to multiple charities including Children’s
Hospital. I guess Ebenezer Scrooge has lots of
relatives and most of them are in the Ocean
Shores business community.
WELCOME TO QT: On a very positive note
I want to THANK our many loyal, ongoing
advertisers, as well as welcome some new ones
to the QT family, including Pro Caliber Indian,
Pro Caliber of Vancouver and Longview,
Moon Motorcycles, Desert Thunder, Burns
Group, Meyer’s Law, Hollister Freedom Rally,
Cliff ’s Cycles, and the Rock and Rally for the
Troops. Our advertisers make QT free to you
so please support them with your business.
Finally let’s remember that the upcoming
Memorial Day weekend is not about mattress
sales, store promotions and car races. They’re
all well and good but take a few minutes to
reflect on the true meaning of the day and say
a silent “Thank You” to those who served and
sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY from all of us. Buy
a card and send some flowers to our special
ladies. Better yet, take her for a two wheeled
ride to her favorite restaurant or B&G and
pick up the tab!

Q: Robert Thompson, Olympia, WA.
Steve, I have a 2011 Victory Cross Country
that I put a Lloyd’s fuel controller, air filter
and WitchDoctor baffle-less slip-ons that I had
welded on a better tip. They have been on since
last summer with no problems. The power,
sound and reliability have been great so far.
But, last week I noticed a change. The intake
noise was a constant flow that is now a pulsed
suction. Popping on deceleration is now very
loud, snappy and evenly spaced. Power has
increased on acceleration. I have not made
any changes since putting the fuel controller
set to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Any idea what is going on here?
A: Well Robert let’s see what we’ve got going
on here. Your bike ran good then not so good.
Hmmm… Ok I’m done thinking. Everything
you are describing sounds like an intake leak
to me. The air leak will cause your bike to run
lean and running lean explains the deceleration
popping. The increase with acceleration could
simply mean the settings you had in your fuel
controller might be a tad rich in that area. You
being able to hear a sound from the intake
means the leak is fairly substantial which, on
the plus side, means that it should be easy to
find. A simple, do it yourself way to find the
leak is to use brake clean in small controlled
sprays in areas around the intake while the
bike is running. If the idle speed changes,
you’ve found the leak. If you don’t find the
leak right away, you should also try spraying
the injectors and sensors that go into your
intake track. But with a leak as substantial as
yours, I am sure you will find the problem in
no time.
Q: William Hobbs, Banning, CA.
Bought this bike from a friend, bike runs great.
When I checked the plugs, Autolite 4164,
I noticed they were well used and checked
the gap. They were gapped at 031, not 040
as specified in manual. I regapped them to
040 and when I rode the bike, it backfired
like crazy when I released throttle. I bought
new plugs and they are 031 gap out of box.
I installed the plugs (Autolite 4164) and the
bike ran ok, minimal backfire. The bike has
a PowerCommander 3R with a serial port,
not USB. My mechanic would not adjust the
tuner to conform to 040 gap unless I obtained
a serial to USB adapter. I called Dynojet
and they referred me to Cable Max to order
an adapter. My mechanic recommended the
bike be adjusted to the proper 040 gap and
said it will perform better. I should receive the
adapter next week and he will map the bike.
The bike runs ok the way it is, but I think I will
have it remapped to 040. Do you agree or have
any comments? ~ Thanks, Bill
are no actual failures.
A: Hey Bill. You have some interesting things
happening here. Spark plug gap and spark plug
type do make a difference in how your bike
runs, but not in the way most people think.
There is no magic horsepower that will just
appear from using some fancy pants plugs,
no matter what the YouTube videos say. But
hey, if you don’t believe me and are still going
to buy those spark plugs that promise to gain
you extra power anyway, you might as well
buy some ultimate eat-all-you-want-and-stilllose-weight diet pills and a book that tells you
how you can make $5,000 per week working
from home.
I often read the Tech Talk articles with a
question in my mind; I always wonder in
some cases “why do the folks that write in
for help with additions and modifications to
their engines or bike make the changes they
do?” Why do they feel they need to make the
changes?
tech talk
cont on 32
What really matters when it comes to spark
plugs is their overall condition, the proper gap,
and of course that it is the correct spark plug
for your vehicle.
You are right to have switched to running
a spark plug of the proper gap. If your bike
is running strange after setting the plugs
correctly, this would indicate that it wasn’t
running right to begin with. However, I
do not agree with your choice of plug. I
know I said earlier that there are no magic
horsepower conjuring spark plugs, but there
are spark plugs that are better quality than
others. The only spark plugs I recommend
using in your twin cam is Harley’s 6R12 or
Champion RA8HC. It doesn’t matter which
one you choose because they are, aside from
the names, the same plug.
This type of plug is designed for air cooled
motors. It also has a very specific resistance
that is measured every time it fires. This is
how Harley controls engine knock: if the plug
has the wrong resistance it could cause the
ignition to be retarded when not needed, or
to not retard it when needed causing excessive
pinging. Using the wrong spark plugs can also
cause engine codes to be thrown when there
So go get yourself the right plug, set it for the
right gap, and see what happens. If she is still
being fussy with you get it on the dyno and
get it tuned properly. Once done you shouldn’t
have any more issues.
Q: Richard the curious
I wonder about a question sent in to “Dyno
Steve” in the April issue, and the fact the
bike owner is doing engine work at 36,000
miles. Why does the engine need to be reworked and why should he have head work
done? If Harley thought the engine’s needed
more space in the head, why don’t they do
it at the factory when they are making the
engines? I guess I’m needing to know why
so many readers are adding cams, gears and
other motor parts to their rides. I have a 2007
Softtail with 17,000 miles and it runs sweet
and I have been very happy with it. Should
I be worried that I need some sort of engine
add-ons soon? ~ A curious reader, Richard
A: Oh dear, dear Richard, these biker folk,
they are a different sort of people: they ride
despite the potential dangers and find their
own road through life. Many of them set
themselves apart in life, so it would make
sense that they also want to set themselves
apart by their bikes. I’m sure your bike is not
100%-factory-stock. Whose is? Bikes rarely
even get out of the dealership without some
sort of customization: different grips, changed
mirrors, matching foot pegs, there are any
number of things you could change to make
your bike just right for you.
Then there are a whole subset of “motorhead”
bikers - those noise-hungry adrenaline junkies
who are always seeking to push the limits.
Us motorheads, well, we like to increase
performance to increase the exhilaration of
the ride; if there is a way to make a vehicle

Back when I was younger, we used to joke that California was the land of fruits and nuts.
Now-a-days we can’t say such politically incorrect things as fruits and nuts, so we have to
say something else, like “strange” or “off-beat.” Politics and culture in the Golden State has
always been a bit unusual, shall we say. Wintering in Palm Springs for the last two years
and watching what goes on back home in Washington from afar has me rethinking this.
Lately I’m actually beginning to think that Washington should hold that title. Yes those of
us who reside in the perpetually moist and moss covered region of Puget Sound are, as a local
insurance company proudly proclaims, “A little different.” And our politics certainly seem
reflect that, but frankly from down here, it seems like Washington is going off the charts.
By the time you read this, the Washington
Legislature should have completed its session. It
was scheduled to end on April 26th. But as I write
this on the day after tax day and after having just
spent the morning on a wonderful 100 mile ride
through the desert, it’s not clear if they will get
done or not. I’m going to bet not.
It’s not like anything good will come out of this
session for motorcyclists at all. ABATE’s efforts
to push through a very modest lane-splitting bill
brought about a good discussion in and out of the
legislature and was picked up by news media all
over the world. It was a great start to what will
most likely be a multi-year effort that eventually
may pass and could culminate in something
good.
The bigger long-term issues still haunt us, and
they are far from being resolved. How do we
address road quality and funding? How do we
solve the falling revenue provided by the gas tax
when folks buy less and less gas, but we still have
major infrastructure concerns? How will we pay
for it in the future?
Right now the proposed transportation-funding
package that the legislature is debating puts a
pretty heavy burden on riders, relative to any
direct benefit to us. I’ve talked about this time
and time again, but to me it seems inherently
unfair to slap the same fee on a car as it does
on a motorcycle. Yet here we are with proposals
to once again increase vehicle license fees on
top of the amounts already paid. In Seattle the
16
non-driving populace managed to impose a $60
per vehicle license fee on all vehicles last fall.
No nuance here, nothing to put a proportional
burden on the type of vehicle, weight, potential
to damage the road, or gas used -- just a flat $60
for the Bentley and the Vespa. And it won’t go
for roads – it’s for transit! And the legislature
is looking to perpetuate that with more license
fees and giving local governments the ability to
impose additional fees as well, and primarily for
transit funding.
Despite the fact we have one of the highest gastaxes in the nation, the legislature is hell bent on
adding an additional 11.5 cents per gallon tax,
which if passed will move us from sixth place
to second place, and put us ahead of California
when it comes to high gas tax, and only a few
cents behind Pennsylvania. And will this go to
fix roads or build new roads? Or will it get used to
build bike lanes, freeway art, and transit?
Now Seattle itself seems determined to make
it so difficult to drive that people will somehow
magically abandon their vehicles and all will be
well and good in this fairy tale scenario. They are
imposing everything from “road diets” on major
arterials which remove vehicle lanes, to reducing
the speed limit to 30mph or less on city streets,
to increasing parking taxes and giving developers
permission to build multi-unit apartment
buildings with no parking for the residents.
At least Seattle has learned that you can’t have it
all on one road. The Mayor has announced that
the notion of the “complete street” is a failed
concept. So they won’t be repeating the disaster
that is Broadway Avenue in Seattle, where you
try to squeeze in a separated bike lane, parking,
pedestrian access, a street car line, and oh yes,
least we forget, a place to drive and park a car.
You just can’t cram it all onto one street and
expect it to work. However, the solution seems
to be “remove the cars” – at least on Eastlake
Avenue in South Lake Union. Apparently the
streetcar isn’t being used because it moves as
slow as traffic – so let’s remove the traffic so the
streetcar can move. That makes sense, doesn’t it!
Who needs cars in the city? Yes, that’s what’s
being proposed.
The new toll express lanes on I-405, which are
to be photo enforced like the 520 bridge, will,
believe it or not, require motorcycles to get toll
readers even though we won’t have to pay the toll!
Federal law allows motorcycles to travel free in
express lanes. But the photo system the state uses
(I’m not making this up now) apparently can’t tell
the difference between a motorcycle and a car!
So if you want to ride in them you will have to
purchase a pass. Other states like California who
have photo toll HOV lanes don’t require this and
can apparently tell the difference between a car
and a bike. My three-year old nephew can too.
Maybe the DOT can hire him!
So yes, I think it’s time to take away the title of the
“fruits and nuts” capital from California, which
seems relatively sane these days, and bestow
it upon Washington where we pay more to be
able to drive less. Where we spend millions on
“art” for freeway off-ramps and nothing to fix the
potholes. Where the rider of a motorcycle pays
the same fee to license his vehicle as the driver
of a big-rig, and where bureaucratic toll photo
readers can’t tell a motorcycle from a Prius. Yep,
California, it’s time to pass that crown up the
coast to Washington. Just give it to me, I’ll ride it
back up and present it myself.

WHY
NOT US?
By Janga
It was 1916. Women weren’t allowed
to vote in most states, and certainly women
wearing pants would be a shocking spectacle.
Two sisters, Augusta, 24, and Adeline, 22,
Van Buren, nevertheless donned militarystyle leggings and leather riding breeches, and
prepared to ride their new Indian motorcycles
across the country from New York to San
Francisco. America’s involvement in World War
l was imminent. The young women, known as
Gussie and Addie, were active in the National
Preparedness Movement and hoped to prove that
they could serve as dispatch motorcycle riders in
the military. They knew that someone had to do
it, and as Seahawk Quarterback Russell Wilson
is now famous for saying, “Why not us?”
In 1901 an Indian motorcycle
prototype and two production units were
20
successfully designed, built and tested. By 1914,
3,000 employees were working on a sevenmile-long Indian assembly line in Springfield,
Massachusetts. Gussie and Addie were riding the
hottest new bike: the 1000 cc Indian Powerplus.
The top of the line Powerplus model featured a
webbed vanadium steel cradle spring frame, was
equipped with gas headlights and Firestone tires.
The sisters were “society girls” who
had been brought up with a more athletic lifestyle
than most females back in the day. Along with
their brother, Albert, they enjoyed canoeing,
swimming, skating, and other challenging
activities, so why not motorcycling? They were
able to afford the pricy $275 for each motorcycle,
and undaunted by the primitive—by today’s
standards— controls, soon developed the skills
needed to drive the heavy machines.
In riding gear topped with sleek
leather caps and goggles, Gussie and Addie left
Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn on July 4th, 1916,
and headed for Chicago on the first leg of their
journey. From there they pushed on to Omaha
and the great—somewhat still wild—west. There
was no freeway traffic to contend with, just
problems with local law officers who were always
arresting them, not for speeding, but for wearing
“men’s clothing,” apparently a serious crime in
hick towns. After explaining their mission they
were wished well and sent on their way. Those
cute smiles with dimpled cheeks and a little leg
must have been an effective “get out of jail free”
card.
They crossed the Rocky Mountains,
scoring a ‘first’ when they powered up the 14,109
foot summit of Pikes Peak—the first women
to reach the top in any vehicle. Not only did
they encounter horrendous twisties, but plenty
of muddies and bumpies along the rambling,
mostly dirt roads. They motored through
Colorado Springs, Gilman, Grand Junction, and
the vast Mojave Desert. The plucky pair never
lost their resolve or love of adventure as they
met challenge after hazard after obstacle, and left
them all in the dust.
In the true spirit of “Why not us?” the
Van Buren sisters arrived in San Francisco on
September 2, 1916, after riding for 5,500 miles
in sixty days. They still had enough grit and
enthusiasm left to take a ride to Mexico just for
fun. Did they prove beyond a doubt that they
were capable of serving as dispatch riders? Yes!
Did the military decide to allow them to serve?
Get real—of course not.
The media of the day gave them short
shrift, but today their epic ride is in legend mode.
Books, articles, and memorial rides honor them.
In 2002 Augusta and Adeline Van Buren (yes,
MAY 2015
MAY 2015
they are related to President Martin Van Buren)
were inducted into the American Motorcyclist
Association Hall Of Fame. In 2003 they were
inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum
Hall Of Fame.
The sisters both eventually married,
but never stopped believing that women could
do anything they wanted to do. They were
both life-long women’s rights activists. Gussie
became a pilot, flying with Amelia Earhart’s
Ninety-Nines, and Addie excelled as a lawyer—
unconventional female occupations at the time.
But then they always asked, “Why not us?”

By: Heath The Chief
In the wonderful world of Harley-Davidson there
are many many options to choose. If you’re a
younger rider like myself there are certain bikes,
styles that appeal to us. Sure, I could be into
ripping down the canyon on a 1200 GX something
or other draggin’ my knee trying to avoid any dirt,
dogs or other idiot drivers, or I could be enjoying
the road, scenery and riding something that is just
COOL.
When I had the chance to pick whatever bike I
wanted to test, it didn’t take long before I fell in
love with this 2015 Harley-Davidson 48. Visually
I was hooked. The mini ape hanger bars are called
“The Chizeled Bar”. These bars fit this bike so
perfectly. When you get a closer look you’ll notice
cast seamless 90-Degree bends for a sleek smooth
finish. The cast elbows eliminate any sharp internal
bends in connection that could weaken the bar.
These bars also have end plugs to simplify internal
wiring. Enough about the bars.
The classic look of the 48 rides in with it’s bobbed
fenders, spoke 16” wheels, slammed rear end and
mini headlight, and ties in brilliantly to it’s sportster
58 year heritage. The 48 emerged on the scene in
2010, bringing it’s name from the steel peanut tank
that first came out on the Harley-Davison S125 in
1948. Speaking of tanks, just don’t plan on riding
too far with this I’ll baby. The fuel tank only holds a
spit of 2.1 gallons! Sorry… Yes the tank looks cool,
but man is that annoying to have to fill up so much!
Sorry for the negativity, but for someone who rides
a lot as I do, It’s a pain and just not a commuter
tank at all. I must say, that is my only complaint
about this bike.
The first iconic element of this 2-wheeled beauty
is the fat front tire. It’s a double double animal
style. Here’s the beef baby, it’s a 130/90 16 Custom
Harley-Davidson Michelin Scorcher. Even though
this is a big front tire it doesn’t KILL the handling,
yes, it does make it a bit tougher at slower speeds,
but it handles perfectly for what the bike is designed
to do, CRUISE.
Starting with the front of the bike, you will notice
the bright red brake calipers. These are an upgrade
feature. The color of the bike tested was the “Hard
Candy Big Red Flake” new for 2015. When this
paint hit the sun it was an amazing work of art
sparkling bright on my smiling face. The forward
controls are decently positioned so you’re not
scraping every little turn. The hand controls
24
worked smoothly and didn’t have any odd feeling
at all. The clutch and brake lever really feel nice
and are form fitted very elegantly crafted. One of
the pieces that people asked most about was “How
comfortable was the Bobber Solo Saddle?” Funny
thing is, it’s actually comfortable! Just looking at
the seat makes you think you’ll be checking in with
your chiropractor on the ride home, but pleasantly
you’ll be impressed by how soft and contoured it
is with your bum. The all leather seat has some
foam padding tucked just slightly underneath and
is hammered in place with nice brass rivets and the
stamped “Milwaukee since 1903” plate is a nice
custom touch. Speaking of custom, this entire
bike that was tested was all upgraded with parts
as you can do on the web with Harley-Davidson’s
own ”Bike Builder” feature, tis amazing I must say.
You log into the website click on the “Bike Builder”
tab, start with a stock bike, add the parts to it and
you can visually see what your new baby will look
like in full 360 rotation before it’s even put together.
Harley-Davidson’s iconic Evolution Engine, also
known as the BLOCKEAD, powers this amazing
piece of iron. The blockhead motor was first kitted
up in 1984 and since had some revolutionary
features designed in. The Air-cooled fuel injected
1200 cc smooth powerhouse is rubber-mounted
to the frame for an amazingly calm breath before
humming down the road with plenty of power
at the wheel when you need it. The motor puts
out 70.8 ft.-pounds of torque. Another key point
in connection with the engine is the closed loop
exhaust system. It contains a catalyst and mini
heated oxygen sensors that improve emission and
drivability, this system is not only better for the
environment, but makes riding better. We were
also lucky enough to have the bike fitted with
the Screaming Eagle “Street Cannon” slip on
mufflers. These stubby air thumpers sounded great
and also help with performance. The screaming
eagle “Chisel Extreme” billet air cleaner is also an
upgrade that makes the bike look incredible. It’s the
small things in connection with this bike that shine
though. The braided brake and clutch cables, the
billet aluminum fork guards and foot peg ends, the
lower mounted mirrors, the flat drag style speedo
and overall tucked in bobbed feel of this bike really
make is a winner for me. If there was any HarleyDavidson I would purchase for myself, this would
be it. The 48 lives on, and in my opinion is the best
Sportster on the market. Evel would be proud.

faster, more responsive, louder, more
aerodynamic, or just generally more badass
than we will find a way to do it. Is it for
everyone? No. But, for many, there is a lot of
pleasure in building a bike into a nimble beast
of a machine - even if you don’t need those
capabilities for everyday riding.
As for any manufacturer making anything
the best it possibly could be? I don’t know of
any. I don’t believe the best that can possibly
be has even been created yet, though I am
doing my best to help develop the next level.
As for needing some engine add on’s soon;
well I’m thinking a supercharger and nitrous,
but not for you. It sounds like for you, your
bike is where you want it to be so just keep on
enjoying that ride.
Q: Greg Olson, Colorado Springs, CO
Dyno Steve, I have a ‘04 Sportster 1200. I’m
having some problems bringing it out of
storage. I can get the bike to start, but when
I take off the choke it will sputter and die.
I can rev it up, but it will not idle. I’m not
very mechanical. I can change my oil, but
that’s about it. I’m really hoping that there
is something really easy to fix it? ~ Fingers
crossed, Greg
A: Well Greg, you’re in luck; it’s a really easy
fix. It sounds like your carburetors low jet
is clogged. To fix this, first shut off the fuel
petcock and disconnect your battery. Then,
remove the air filter assembly. This will give
you the access to the carb, and you will need
to remove the float bowl. There will be gas
inside when you remove it, so be careful not
to dump it all over yourself when you take
it off. Or you can just make a mess, I won’t
judge you. Once you get the float bowl out,
remove the low jet and unclog it by using
either a jet ream or solvent. Then it is ready
to be reassembled and you’re done! There
are videos on YouTube (better ones than the
fancy spark plug sales pitches) that can walk
you step-by-step through this process.
But, if changing your oil feels like the limit
of which you’d like to go, then take it to a
shop. Depending on what it’s clogged with
and where it came from, it can make this job
a little more involved than a paragraph of text

or that a 5 minute video can cover. Your bike is
11 years old now, it may need the fuel system,
tank, petcock, fuel line, and carburetor to be
looked at and serviced as needed.
But, Greg, I think it is great that you are
pushing against your comfort zone and
looking to learn how your bike works and how
to maintain it properly. Getting to know your
bike inside and out will help you take better
care of her, and in return she’ll be a longer
lasting, more agreeable girl.
Q: Brandon Maxwell, Moses Lake, WA.
Dear Tech Talk, I recently purchased a 2005
Heritage Softail with 25,000 miles. I instantly
fell in love with this bike and made the
purchase with little information. I am also
new to Harleys. Some people have been telling
me that these engines have some issues with
cam chain tensioners. The info on the internet
is all over the place on this topic. I’m looking
for some reliable info on this. ~ Thanks for
your time, Brandon.
the mileage. Cam chain tensioners are wear
components in your engine - they will go bad.
Now the big question is, when will they wear
out and how do you catch it before they cause
real damage to the engine? The biggest factor
to the tensioner wearing out is how often the
oil has been changed. I understand you don’t
have history on this machine, so a good rule
of thumb is to visually inspect them at your
30k service. There are bikes that have failed
much earlier in their life, but this is not the
norm. There are also some bikes cam chain
tensioners that I have seen last in upwards
of 80k. The cost to do the inspection is far,
far cheaper than the repair of a catastrophic
failure.
There are also upgrades to the cam
compartment that extend the time between,
or need for, replacements. For example, you
can convert your cam chain tensioner to the
newest style hydraulic tensioners. These wear
at a much slower rate and therefore require
less maintenance. The best solution for your
bike is to eliminate the wear components from
the cam compartment completely by changing
to gear drive cams - no wear, no chains, no
worries.
A: This is a question that I hear more and
more as these bikes start getting up there in

Record Sales at Mecum’s
E.J. Cole Collection Auction
Hammer Sales near $12.3 Million with Sale of Ex-McQueen Cyclone at $775,000
What took nearly 50 years to accumulate, was dispersed in mere
hours as Mecum Auctions offered the 225 motorcycles of the E.J. Cole Collection on March 20-21 at South Point Casino and Exhibit Hall in Las Vegas.
Total hammer sales reached $12,270,000 – the most ever achieved by a single
vintage motorcycle auction – highlighted by the sale of a 100-year-old Cyclone
Board Track Racer once owned by Steve McQueen at $775,000, making it one
of the highest documented prices ever paid for a motorcycle at auction.
Considered by many to be the finest, most diverse single collection
of American-made machines, the E.J. Collection featured production years
ranging from 1903 to 1991. Several of his motorcycles had ownership history
with actor and racer Steve McQueen, and even more of them were ultra-rare
vintage and antique originals. Of the motorcycles offered, 23 sold for $100,000
or more, and the average sale price overall was more than $50,000 each.
Top sales were claimed by the ex-Steve McQueen 1915 Cyclone
Board Track Racer (Lot S57) – one of just 13 believed to exist and the only one
with McQueen ties – which hammered at $775,000, and a rare and unrestored
1907 Harley-Davidson Strap Tank (Lot S62) gaveling at $650,000. Both sales
made these motorcycles two of the most expensive motorcycles ever sold at
auction.
38
E.J. Cole, of Houston, was present at the event and was actively
engaged with the nearly 1,000 bidders and spectators in attendance. “Mr. Cole
and his collection were inspirational to the audience of true collectors that
attended this auction,” said Ron Christenson, the president of Mecum Auctions’ MidAmerica Motorcycle division. “These world-record sales represent
more than just a transfer of ownership. Mr. Cole is revered for assembling
pieces of mechanical history, and this past weekend, motorcycle collectors
experienced a once-in-a-lifetime event with their sale.”
The complete top 10 sales at the E.J. Cole Collection Auction include (all individual sales reflect hammer prices):
1915 Cyclone Board Track Racer Ex-Steve McQueen (Lot S57) at $775,000
1907 Harley-Davidson Strap Tank (Lot S62) at $650,000
1911 Flying Merkel Board Track Racer (Lot S79) at $385,000
1942 Crocker V Twin Big Tank (Lot S69) at $350,000
1928 Indian Altoona Hillclimber (Lot S93) at $225,000
1912 Harley-Davidson Model 8A Twin (Lot S127) at $215,000
1912 Henderson 4 (Lot S121) at $205,000
1917 Henderson 4 Ex-Steve McQueen (Lot S95) at $190,000
1930 Harley-Davidson Factory Hillclimber (Lot S92) at $165,000
1907 Indian Tri-Car with Sedan Chair (Lot S67) at $165,000

Roadside emergencies can happen to anyone at any time, unfortunately
sometimes these things happen at night. Whether it’s a flat tire on the car, a
dead battery, or running out of gas, facing any of these problems in the dark
is difficult. Secur Products has introduced the newest addition to its lineup
of battery banks and emergency devices, the Four-in-One Car Charger. The
SP-4002 is a 12V car charger for USB devices, flashlight, power bank, and
emergency light all in one device.
The Four-in-One Car Charger easily plugs into a cigarette lighter and allows
the user to connect any USB charging cord to the available port. The car
adapter portion of the Four-in-One Car Charger is exposed after removing
the magnetic base of the device. The magnetic base is designed to hold the
flashlight by adhering itself to the side of the car to provide light when changing a tire, or to the hood when it is propped up to illuminate any maintenance
being done.
Rainproof
and
built to travel, the
Four-in-One
Car
Charger provides a
unique solution for
everyday travel or
emergency roadside
situations. Because
of its compact size
the
Four-in-One
Car Charger is ideal
to store in a glove
box or center console when not being
used. The Four-inOne Car Charger
has an MSRP of
$39.99.

On the 3rd Saturday in April, Emerald
City Harley-Davidson celebrated their 3rd
Anniversary, Luau style!
As I rolled in on my bike around noon the first
person I noticed was their Sales Mgr, Robert
Herrington, standing in the parking lot. He was
wearing a festive Hawaiian shirt and lei as well
as a grass hula skirt over his walking shorts. No
doubt about it he definitely stood out from the
rest of the crowd who were parking their bikes
and walking around. That immediate image
of Robert, along with all of the other outdoor
Hawaiian decorations created a fun, whimsical
“welcome to the party” atmosphere!
As I stepped inside the dealership, I was blown
away at how much effort had been put into
creating an authentic and uniquely themed
dealership event. The place looked gorgeous,
thanks to their high energy Marketing
Manager, Erika Elder and the helpful staff.
t-shirt display wall, which was filled with
colorful lei’s and free luau themed goodies for
anyone who walked through their doors.
Further back, on the far left wall of the
dealership were a row of tables that were filled
with an amazing array of Hawaiian dishes and
barbecue, and decorated with tiki statues, and
flowers. The food was out of this world good!
It was truly some of the best food I’ve ever
eaten at a dealership event thanks to Pac Island
Grill who catered the Anniversary Party!
Emerald City H-D also has something quite
unique within their walls – a state-of-the art
indoor venue called The Roadhouse that
consists of a large indoor stage with a built in
8000 Watt PA system, professional lighting, a
large projector screen and a large seating area
which is where everyone congregated to eat
and take in the entertainment.
On the Roadhouse stage the Aloha Island
Treasures Seattle & There In the Islands
ukulele musicians and poi dancers were a
delight to listen to and watch.
A table had been set up just inside, near their

This was very much a fun, all ages family event
and Emerald City H-D made sure there was plenty
for the kids and young at heart to enjoy, such as
the inflatable mechanical surfboard, their popular
video game area and photo booth.
I’m a big believer that we need to include kids in
the Harley scene; we need to share with them the
fun that comes with riding a Harley-Davidson and
we need to get them interested in motorcycles at a
young age so that they become the next generation
of Harley riders.
As busy as it was I did manage to get a quick
moment with Emerald City H-D General Mgr,
Brian Myers, who was on the go all day working
with his staff and talking with customers. He was
no doubt extremely happy with the gorgeous spring
weather and the huge turnout for their Anniversary
Luau Party!
After speaking with Brian I made my way around
the entire shop; every department was slammed
with people shopping and asking questions about
bikes, products, parts, Motorclothes and service
work. This is where the Emerald City H-D staff
truly shined – every staff member was full of
energy and ready to help!
MAY 2015
Although it was so busy I wanted to make it
a point of meeting or saying hello to any of the
Department Managers that I had not seen up until
this point so I took a moment to say Hello to their
Parts Mgr-Brian Marsh, Finance & Insurance MgrScot Dormier and HR Mgr-Tina Herrington. It’s
always nice to put a face to a name and to simply
say “Hello”.
As I passed through the Sales floor a big display of
miniature cupcakes by Frosted Cupcakes & Cakes
was calling my name. I’m glad I stopped and tried
one… or two. Dang, they were good!
It was time to get some fresh air and take a walk
outside to go see what was happening down by
the Emerald City H-D Pre-Owned building on the
corner of the property that borders 188th St SW and
Hwy 99. Outside the building a car and truck show
& shine was capturing quite a bit of attention from
the biker crowd.
Inside, for me, it was like taking a walk down
memory lane, back to when I was just a little twerp.
You see I grew up just a couple miles up the road
from this building and my dad and I would stop
by (the former motorcycle shop) and I’d watch my
dad linger around and dream… and then look at
me and say “Some day”. Little did my dad know
that I would one day become his “some day”. That
memory with my dad is a big part of why I ride.
Just as I was about to hop on my bike and leave
a noticed my left mirror was about to fall off so I
stopped back by the Service Dept to see if one of the
guys would tighten it before I headed out towards
the Kitsap Peninsula. I’d like to thank Elliot for
being so quick to help me out, I appreciated it very
much!
Overall, the entire day at Emerald City was a blast!
In honor of their successful 3rd Anniversary Luau
Party I’d like to say “Mahalo nui loa!” (Thank you
very much).
If you have not checked out Emerald City HarleyDavidson you should take a road trip and pay them
a visit. They are located at 5711 188th St. SW
Lynnwood WA.
Don’t forget to check them out on facebook or via their
website: www.emeraldcityhd.com to see all that is planned
to happen at the dealership and at the Roadhouse in the
coming months
