COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Mission Statement:
The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center is dedicated to the development of new work and new artists for the theater. The
O’Neill creates and operates programs, which advances and complement this goal, for the enrichment of theater
artists, students, teachers, and audiences in the tradition of bold exploration embodied in the work of its namesake.
Summer Conferences
Few theaters have had a greater impact on American drama. Over the course of 50
years, the O’Neill has created innovative new models and pioneered play development.
Prior to the O’Neill, unheralded and undiscovered writers lacked the time and space
necessary to develop new work for the American stage. The National Playwrights Conference and the National Music Theater Conference were founded in response to that
unmet need, offering writers a safe haven to experiment during a crucial stage in a play’s
evolution. The development of new work before it advances to commercial production,
though considered standard practice today, is known as the “O’Neill Process,” variations
of which have been adopted by theaters around the country. The O’Neill also supports
the: National Puppetry Conference, Cabaret & Performance Conference, National
Critics Institute, and Commercial Theater Institute.
National Theater Institute
Founded in 1970, the National Theater Institute (NTI) is a national leader in undergraduate theatrical training. Students train with leading master teachers from the US and
abroad in an intensive conservatory-style curriculum. More than one hundred students
study within one of NTI’s six programs each year: National Theater Institute Semester,
Advanced Directing Semester, Advanced Playwriting Semester, Moscow Art Theater Semester, Theatermakers Summer Intensive, and National Music Theater Institute Semester
(NEW! Fall 2014). NTI alumni include John Krasinski, Jennifer Garner, Jeremy Piven,
and Josh Radnor.
Youth Initiatives
The O’Neill offers high-quality arts education to over 500 students each year, resulting
in the creation of over 1,000 student written plays through its in-classroom playwriting
workshops, its representation of 8 regional school districts in its Young Playwriting Festival
(promoting the childhood understanding of script development), and its superior musical
training through the Cabaret & Performance Conference’s Junior Fellows program. In
addition, the O’Neill offers guided tours of Monte Cristo Cottage to area schools. All
youth initiative programs are completely free of charge.
Monte Cristo Cottage
The Monte Cristo Cottage is the boyhood summer home of Eugene O’Neill, America’s
only Nobel-Prize winning playwright. In 1971, the Cottage was designated as a National Historic Landmark. Today, the O’Neill owns and operates the Cottage as a museum open to the public from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and is open by appointment
throughout the academic year. The Cottage is the setting for two of O’Neill’s most
famous works: Long Day’s Journey into Night and his only comedy, Ah, Wilderness!
