Breakthrough Manchester at The Derryfield School
Breakthrough is a tuition-free, academic program whose
mission is:
• to help promising middle school students – particularly
those with limited opportunities – build skills and
confidence to enter and succeed in college preparatory
high school programs
• inspiring talented high school and college students to
pursue careers in education.
In addition to The Derryfield School, Breakthrough partners
with the Manchester School District and the Breakthrough
Collaborative.

Meet Skyler
Stepping Up to Writing
As part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality of
instruction Breakthrough students receive in their intensive,
six-week academic experience each summer, Breakthrough
Manchester has partnered with sister sites to adopt a
literature and writing curriculum. These complement the
previously implemented math curriculum.
• The writing curriculum uses the Step Up To Writing
approach to composition, which is a system of color
coding that helps students organize and develop their
work.
• The literature curriculum consists of thematic units for
each grade level, which use a central work of fiction
with supplemental social studies materials (Civil Rights
in sixth grade, and mythology and the hero’s journey for
seventh and eighth graders).
By next summer, curricula for all subject areas - including
science - will be complete, which means that students will
have a cohesive experience in their Breakthrough classes
from grades six through nine. Additionally, the writing
and math curricula are both reinforced during the monthly
Super Saturday sessions throughout the school year.
Breakthrough’s New Program Director
We are thrilled to welcome
Skyler Mosenthal back to
Breakthrough Manchester!
Skyler joined our staff as
Program Director in July 2012,
following the transformative
teaching experience it provided
him as an intern teacher
when he was a student in
college. Upon graduation from
Denison University (B.A. in
Educational Studies), Skyler undertook a year of service
with City Year New Hampshire in Manchester tutoring
and mentoring 6-8th grade students at Hillside Middle
School. He returns to the East Coast after two years with
the PLACE Corps program (Partners in Los Angeles Catholic
Education) where he earned his M.A. degree in Secondary
Education at Loyola Marymount University, and taught
Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Conceptual Physics
at Sacred Heart High School. Skyler also teaches history
at The Derryfield School, and he is an avid runner and
enthusiastic percussionist.
Farewell to Trevor
At our Alumni Reunion and throughout the 2012 summer session, we
honored Trevor Munhall’s service to Breakthrough Manchester. Trevor’s
involvement with Breakthrough spanned 12 years, including eight years as
part of the professional staff. While at Breakthrough, he worked diligently
to refine, align and improve our academic program, including our intern
teacher training and curriculum development and delivery. We wish Trevor
the best in his next steps at Harvard University, where he is pursuing a
master’s degree in education.
Help-Portrait Comes to Breakthrough
As part of a Super Saturday last December, Breakthrough students went home with a professional portrait of themselves made
available by a Help-Portrait event hosted by The Derryfield School. Help-Portrait (www.help-portrait.com) is a nationwide
movement of photographers who offer free, professional photos to people who might not otherwise have easy access to
photography services. Richard Critz (www.rwcfoto.com), a local portrait and event photographer, and Derryfield parent, led
volunteers including Derryfield photography students, staff, and parents, and took photographs of over 90 Breakthrough students.
Richard commented, “Help-Portrait is all about connecting with people. I’m delighted by the Derryfield community’s enthusiastic
response to our event and the way everyone has embraced that mission.”
After this incredibly successful event, Breakthrough Executive Director Kate Erskine reflected, “Very few of our Breakthrough
Manchester students have ever had a professional portrait taken of them, other than school pictures. Students will leave today
with a gift that celebrates their past, current, and future accomplishments on their path to college. We are inspired by Richard’s
generosity and vision, as well as by many volunteers from our own Derryfield School community.”
Highlights
In July, Breakthrough offered
CollegeBound Boot Camp (CB2), a
new, four-day intensive workshop
for rising sophomores, juniors and
seniors. Through interactive seminars,
Breakthrough high school students
learned about the initial college
search, completing the application
and how to apply for financial aid.
Presenters included Breakthrough
staff, guest speakers from The
Derryfield School and local
college representatives. After CB2,
Jocelyne, a Breakthrough junior,
remarked, “I think any student
who plans on attending college
should go. I learned so much in
four days. I now feel less nervous
about this process because I am
aware of all the work there is
ahead of me.”
Breakthrough Manchester was the
recipient of a $10,000 Innovation
Grant sponsored by Breakthrough
Collaborative to align its instructional
coaching model with the recent
progress we have made in teacher
training and curriculum development.
The project entails the implementation
of a professional learning community
model, instructional rounds based
on the research of Richard Elmore,
and a strengths-based model for
assessment.
Once again, Derryfield families
celebrated Breakthrough Manchester
at the annual Parent Faculty
Association Benefit by donating
$33,750 to the program. Breakthrough
student, Damion Neth ’17, spoke at
the event, sharing how Breakthrough
has supported him on his path to
college. He remarked, “Breakthrough
has changed the way I look at my
education. It isn’t just a simple walk
in the park, it’s a challenge that can
be accomplished with the help of
others along the way. Thanks to
the knowledge, opportunities and
support from Breakthrough, I will be
the first in my immediate family who
will attend a four-year college, and
one day, I dream of being an actor,
doctor or engineer.”
As part of their professional
development,
summer
teacher
interns met with representatives
from MATCH Teacher Residency
and the Uncommon Schools
charter network to explore career
opportunities
after
college.
Additionally, Breakthrough teacher
alumna, Komal Bhasin - currently
a principal at Unlocking Potential
who is involved with the Lawrence
School District turnaround in
Massachusetts - led a workshop
for interns about what principals
are looking for in teacher leaders
and how they can get on track to
be placed in highly competitive
positions.
A group of teacher interns trekked
to Peterborough this summer to
hear poet Taylor Mali speak about
teachers (pictured). At an autograph
signing after the presentation,
Breakthrough teachers were
pleasantly surprised when, Mali
exclaimed, “I love Breakthrough!”
Mali is famous for his viral video
poem, What Teachers Make.
