The depth and diversity of learning
opportunities for members of an educational
community like Cornerstone College are
immense. One of many areas of focus for us
is the connection we have and can build with
Aboriginal people and communities.
At Cornerstone we acknowledge with respect the
local Aboriginal people, the Peramangk, who in
recent times (historically) walked the land on which
Cornerstone College is now built. Many members of
our community feel a strong bond with the Peramangk
people and Aboriginal people in general. We aim
to be more intentional in marking this connection
through symbolism around the College and in our
programs and actions. The shapes which are being
included in paving outside Atelier, mark a start in the
development of this symbolism.
As part of the Year 10 Experience, students and
staff stay and contribute to Aboriginal communities
in Central Australia. For the last two years we have
visited the communities of Hermannsburg and
Areyonga, working in the local schools to support
students in their learning. Last year there were some
outcomes to celebrate;

ministry matters
My name is Greg Page and I’m
the Pastor who’s been given the
opportunity to serve at Cornerstone
College throughout Term 1 while
Pastor Albert is on holidays.
I’m married with four children and live in
Mount Barker. I spend two days per week
at Cornerstone and the rest of my week is
dedicated to my congregation in Murray
Bridge, where I’ve been serving full-time for
the past four years.
To take students from a remote community
such as Hermannsburg requires respectful and
diligent planning which is being undertaken.
Students such as these would need
Homestay accommodation and so we invite
any interested families to contact Rob
Rohde or Jacinta Smart (Aboriginal Focus
person) in the next week or so.
In a Christian community we are often
reminded of Jesus’ words to us in John 13
“A new commandment I give to you, that you
love one another: just as I have loved you, you
also are to love one another. By this all people
will know that you are my disciples, if you have
love for one another.”
In developing connections with our Aboriginal
brothers and sisters we can show and
experience this love.
Mr Rob Rohde
Deputy Principal
My involvement at Cornerstone is part of
an innovative new pilot project whereby a
parish pastor who’s interested in experiencing
the school pastor role can spend time in a
Lutheran College to get a feel for what it’s all
about. My goal is to get involved in as many
aspects of Cornerstone’s day to day activities
as possible and appropriate – to spend time
with students and get to know where a pastor
fits in their experience of school, and spend
time with teachers and get to know where a
pastor fits in their experience of work.
I’ve only been in this role at Cornerstone for a
few weeks – and it’s been a hectic start to the
year – but it’s been a blast!
Already I’ve had the opportunity to be involved
in worship services for staff and chapel
services for students, various devotions and
meetings, as well as numerous classroom and
recess/lunchtime discussions. I’m continually
amazed by the caring atmosphere and culture
of this place. There’s a respect that pervades
everything and everywhere – among students,
among staff, and between students and staff.
At the risk of seemingly quoting clichés or
pouring out platitudes I truly think this place
lives by its Mission and Values. It is a caring
and compassionate Christian community that
gives its students an opportunity to explore a
relationship with Jesus but at the same time
also calls on that care and compassion to
encourage and nurture each student to achieve
their very best – not just academically but in
whatever gifts and strengths God has given
them.
I look forward to learning more about, and
being a part of the Cornerstone community for
the next couple of months.
God bless you

the limits of our striving for success. No matter
how hard we might work or how successful we
will become we are all in need of forgiveness and
grace. Just as we can all taste of success, we all
taste of defeat.
Education, therefore, should be about more than
just pushing people to reach their full potential. A
holistic education should embrace the reality of
failure, whether it be academic, moral or spiritual.
We must learn to appreciate our own limitations
and failings so that our successes can be seen
for what they truly are; God’s gracious activity
within us.

We live in a success based culture.
However, this is not entirely a bad thing.
Competition breeds innovation and
growth. People who work hard should
reap the rewards of their efforts. Without
motivation and drive nothing would ever be
accomplished. The tricky part is keeping our
desire for success and productivity in healthy
perspective.

SACE
Merit Ceremony
Two weeks ago I was
fortunate enough to
be able to attend the
SACE Merit Ceremony
at Government House.
Two of our 2015 Year 12 students, Lija Pfeiller
(Nutrition) and Natasha Harvey (Workplace
Practices) were acknowledged as worthy
winners of Merits for their respective subjects,
both achieving A+ results. This was great
recognition for the hard work and dedication
that these two students showed, and their
willingness to continually improve and strive
for their best.
We congratulate these two “old scholars”
(pictured above) for such a wonderful
achievement.
New Workplace Learning Guidelines
This year marks the introduction of the new
Workplace Learning Guidelines, which were
previously revised in 2004. Ultimately these
guidelines are focussed on ensuring student
safety in the work place, which should always
be of the highest priority. As a result, we are
implementing some procedural changes to the
way that students go about organising their
work placements and how we prepare the
students before they go into the workplace.
important information
These changes are clearly outlined in
information packs being sent out to families of
Year 10, 11 & and relevant Year 12 students,
and will be discussed within Year 10 PLP
classes and at the upcoming Year 11 Parent
Information Night, next Thursday 3 March.
•
The main change that students and parents
will need to be aware of is the requirement
for students to submit to the College an
“Application to negotiate workplace learning”
form, after having a discussion with a potential
workplace learning provider. If approved,
students can then complete a “Workplace
Learning Agreement form” to confirm their
placement. This is to ensure that students
and the College are able to properly identify
any risks associated with a particular
work placement and have any necessary
conversations with both the student, their
parents and if need be the employer, to ensure
everyone’s safety. Should you have any queries
regarding this process, please feel free to

Hopper Ants
Hopper Ants have always been
a visible element of our Purtinga
Wetlands ecosystem throughout
the spring and summer months.
This year, however, College staff
have sighted hopper ants in the main areas
of the College and a number of strategies
have already been implemented to ensure the
safety of all members of our community, most
especially those who suffer allergies to these
insects.
Thus far:
• ALL students and staff have been advised
of the risk, and to be vigilant when
outdoors. If hopper ants are sighted their
location should be reported immediately to
Amy at Senior School Student Reception.
• Students with hopper ant allergies have
been advised to carry their medication
with them while moving around the
College. Generic epipens are located in
Middle School and Senior School admin
areas, as well as at Purtinga.
• The College is currently investigating the
best method of managing the situation
until more permanent eradication can be
determined.

Lions’ Youth of the Year Quest
Our 2016 Cornerstone College entrant for
this international competition was Year 12
student, Chelsea Roberts, who entered the
Hahndorf Lions’ Club heat.
for leadership qualities, citizenship,
sportsmanship, community involvement,
general knowledge and personality. A prize
is given for the best public speaker and then
an overall winner is decided, with the same
person on occasions winning both.
Chelsea was the only entrant in the
Hahndorf Lions’ Club heat this year and so
automatically advances to the next stage of
this competition, the Zone Final, to be held
in Strathalbyn on 5 March. This is open to
the public and support for Chelsea would be
welcomed.
Chelsea met for 40 minutes on Sunday
21 February with three judges who spoke
with her about her own interests and also
about her knowledge of current affairs.
The Chairman of Judges commented on
Chelsea’s vibrant personality and how she
had impressed all three judges during her
interview.
Chelsea then had to address an audience of
Lions’ members by delivering two impromptu
speeches – no preparation time other than
hearing the topic read aloud to her twice! –
and then a prepared five minute speech on a
topic of her own choice. Chelsea presented
a compelling and extremely well researched
speech on Veganism.
Public speaking is only a small part of
this competition (30 points out of the total
110) with the remainder of points allocated
Following this stage there will be a Regional
Final, a District Final and a State Final.
The State winner will then compete in the
Australian Final, with the overall winner
representing Australia overseas when
the International Youth of the Year Quest
will culminate, and a world winner will be
identified.
If Chelsea advances to and wins the State
Final, she will compete in the National Final.
State winners receive an all-expenses paid
trip around Australia!
Mr Rob Rohde also attended the afternoon
to hear Chelsea and we thank him for his
support.
We thank Chelsea for being an excellent
ambassador for Cornerstone College, and
we wish her all the best as she competes
on behalf of the Hahndorf Lions’ Club in the
Zone Final at Strathalbyn on March 5th.

Mrs Sandra Guess
Recognition of 20 Year Service
We acknowledged Mrs Sandra Guess for
twenty years of service at our Opening
Worship. The following citation of her
significant contribution was read at that
service;
Sandra began her teaching career within
Lutheran Education when she came to
Cornerstone College in 1995. This was the
first year of Adaptive Education being offered
at Cornerstone College, and with her previous
experience in integrating students with special
needs into mainstream classes, the inaugural
Principal, Mr Mal Wegener, appointed Sandra
at 0.4 as the sole person in this faculty.
Sandra was instrumental in the foundations
that were laid and the direction this critical
area for learning has taken at Cornerstone
College. Some snippets of the evolution and
highlights of this journey for Sandra include:
•
•
The many meetings with parents and
professional agency staff to determine
the support needs that would best
suit students with a variety of learning
challenges.
Assisting teachers to develop strategies
and providing practical assistance that
Mrs Sandra Guess
•
•
would enable the students to access the
curriculum in the most effective manner.
Working with other nearby schools, and
implementing a life skills programme.
Helping to establish a comprehensive
transition process to make the transfer
from primary school to Cornerstone
College efficient and informative.
After 14 years in this role, whilst still maintaining
a connection with Adaptive Education through
teaching in Year 9 Study, Sandra changed
focus to being a Middle School Core Group
Teacher, where she has taught in the areas
of Maths, English and Humanities. Within this
role, Sandra’s kindness, and understanding of
students has been complimented with her love
of learning and ability to engage and stretch
students in their learning.
Sandra has an acute interest in other cultures.
For several years, Sandra organised a
homestay program, where students from Japan
visited our school and stayed with our families.
In 2000, Chinese language was introduced to
Cornerstone College and Sandra attended Year
11 classes alongside the students to begin to
learn Modern Standard Chinese. Later, she
continued to study after hours through Adelaide
University, and now teaches Year 7 Chinese.
Sandra also participated in the inaugural study
tour in 2001, to our sister school (Hai Dian)
in Beijing, with 18 students and three staff.
Sandra was the first teacher to take part in a
teacher exchange with Hai Dian, where she
stayed for a month to share ideas and build
friendship between the two schools. She
has maintained a coordinating role, helping
organise biennial study tours to Beijing and
annual visits to Cornerstone College by our
Beijing sister school.
Sandra’s strong sense of social justice has
seen her demonstrate this in her actions
as a teacher at Cornerstone College and
is exemplified by the following examples.
Through her work at the College, she
volunteered for a year to teach Numeracy
to inmates at Mobilong prison. This was an
intense, eye opening and very worthwhile
service. More recently, Sandra has been
part of a group of staff and students knitting
squares and turning them into blankets for
overseas orphanages and local homeless.
Palaeontology I nominated this and was put into
one of the two Earth and Environment groups.
Some highlights for me during the forum included
a fossil dig site in Canowindra, the swing dance
evening, Questacon, a visit to Geoscience Australia,
the national library and the NASA Communications
Centre.
Sandra is a caring, thoughtful and humble
person who shares the Gospel in a gentle and
respectful manner.
We thank Sandra for her service to our
community.
National Youth Science Forum
In late January I attended the National
Youth Science Forum (NYSF), a two-week
program sponsored by the Rotary Club and
held at the Australian National University in
Canberra. The Program is for avid science
students going into Year 12 from all around
Australia. Two sessions are held, each with
200 students in it solely for the purpose of
exposing students to the different areas of
science as well as enabling them to interact
with students around Australia who have a
keen interest in science whilst living on a
university campus.
The two weeks from 16 to 31 January this
year was definitely an incredible experience
for me. The program was filled with amazing
people, places and experiences. During
the day students were placed in an area of
science that they were interested in, whilst at
night there was the opportunity to interact with
all participants in a variety of activities. For the
day time activities participants were divided
into interest groups which we nominated for
beforehand and due to my avid interest in
The entire experience exposed me so much more
to the world of Science. I had the opportunity to
talk to universities, successful scientists, people
who were still studying, past NYSF participants and
PhD students in so many different fields. I made
ice-cream using liquid nitrogen, cut open a rock to
reveal a fossil no human had ever laid eyes on and
had a video conference with an expert at the CERN
Hadron collider. It was a truly fantastic experience
(which the Strathalbyn Rotary Club supported) and
I will cherish it as I continue to explore my future in
the field of Science.

Knockout Cricket
The school knockout season kicked
off with the Year 8/9 cricket being held
recently at Hahndorf Oval. The team took
on St Francis de Sales and we were lucky
enough to win the toss and head into bat
first.
After a slow start the batsmen got used
to the pace of the ball and began to build
a solid foundation. However, some good
bowling saw us lose three quick wickets.
This brought Lachlan Bates to the crease
joining Ryan King who had been making
steady progress. These boys combined
well to establish a solid partnership before
Ryan was forced to retire on fifty. This
brought Liam Fitzgerald to the crease
and he continued where Ryan had left off,
combining for another solid partnership
and pushed the total passed 150. The
team finished with 183 from their 35 overs.
It was then our time to head into the field and
it was a solid team effort with the ball. The
opening bowling partnership of Angus Wilson
and Charlie McDonough bowled tight line and
lengths restricting the scoring early. That’s
when the wickets began to fall and St Francis
de Sales batsmen struggled to get a start.
Emily Hinze was the pick of the bowlers in the
end with some superb line and length bowling
that saw her rewarded with three wickets. The
last few batsmen offered little resistance and
St Francis were dismissed for 69.
It was a pleasure to look after the team and
I was very proud of the sportsmanship and
attitude of all players on the day. A special
mention must also go to Year 12s Austin
Abraham and Alex Durbidge for their support
on the day.

Service. Kathy provided staff with useful
information on the cause, symptoms and
care of diabetes, relevant for the care of
students within our College. Thank you
to our Year 7 parent who also attended
and answered questions regarding
the upcoming Year 7 Camp. It was a
rewarding session.

Inter-house Athletics Day
Friday 11 March 2016
The annual carnival will be held in Week 6. Students will receive information in the upcoming
weeks. For this special day on the College calendar to run efficiently we require help from
parents/carers. If you have some time available to do time-keeping, measuring, assist with field
events etc, your help would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact Miss Rebecca Weiss at the College on 8398 6000 to advise of your availability.
