Welcome from the President of IVSA
2015/2016
Dear IVSA Family,
I am happy to welcome you all to the 65th
IVSA Congress in Austria. Over the next 10
days you will get to experience Vienna
through the eyes of the local veterinarians. The itinerary is filled with lectures,
workshops, excursions, general assemblies, cultural, and social events, such as
cultural evening and the live & silent auction.
If this is your first IVSA event; welcome to our IVSA family! I hope
you learn a lot from your time with us and find it as inspiring as
many of us have before you. You can look forward to going home
with not only more knowledge but also many new friends, be prepared for your Facebook/Instagram to explode with all new friend
requests. Over the years, I’ve been lucky to experience several congresses and symposia and I can say that I’ve made many friendships that will last a lifetime.
If this is not your first IVSA event; welcome back! I hope you will
show the new delegates how wonderful IVSA is and teach them
our IVSA ways and traditions.
I look forward to getting to know all of you and exchange experiences and ideas. One of the great things about symposia/
congresses like these, is being able to learn from others. You can
learn a lot by discussing topics such as animal welfare, one health
and veterinary education but also culture and traditions, with other colleagues, and it will open your mind and broaden your perspective. Feel free to always share your experiences, not only at
symposium but throughout your knowledge and later on in your
4
career. Never underestimate how much you can learn from experiencing, rather than studying books.
The Organizing Committee has been working very hard for the last
two years to make this an unforgettable experience for all of you.
Therefore, I’d like to thank the Organizing Committee, for all their
hard work and efforts and all the stress that comes along with organizing a congress. So everyone, be extra nice to them!
Also , Since it is the most crowded annual congress in IVSA history ,
I would like to congratulate Victoria Drauch and her all amazing OC
team.
So all there is left for me to say now is; enjoy! I hope you have a
great time, feel included in our IVSA family and will go home with
more veterinary-related and non-veterinary knowledge. If you
have any questions about IVSA, or our faculties, feel free to come
ask me or any of the other IVSA Official members.
Never Forget:
We are ONE ,
We are FAMILY ,
We are IVSA !!!
Kind Regards,
Anıl TÜRER
IVSA Global President 2015-2016

Welcome from the President of IVSA
Austria
Dear Delegate of the 65th IVSA Congress,
I warmly welcome you to the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. In the upcoming ten
days you will have the opportunity to get to
know the International Veterinary Students'
Association as well as 265 international veterinary students. You are part of the biggest IVSA
Congress so far and will meet students from over 35 different nations. To make those days
even more enjoyable we set up an itinerary to
make you experience the Austrian lifestyle up to
every single tip of your toes.
The tours will show you the beautiful capital Vienna whereas the
workshops and evening activities are supposed to make you
experience the Austrian culture firsthand.
As you might have already seen we have prepared a tough program for you. The reason why it is so packed is that we want to
show you the variety of Austria in the most detailed way possible.
Our educational program is divided into 5 streams, which
represent the way the curriculum of our university is constructed.
In the last year of our studies we specialize in one field of veterinary medicine. We know everybody has different interests therefore
we want to give you the chance to learn more about the topics you
are really into.
6
The theme of our congress is “Preventive Veterinary Medicine“.
The veterinary profession is very divergent but preventive veterinary medicine is one of the topics that can be found in almost every
branch - veterinary epidemiology, animal disease prevention &
control, animal health economics as well as one health including
environmental health. Throughout the lectures and workshops you
will be given an insight in those topics as well as in our daily university life.
We have been working on this congress for two years and now finally, the day has arrived to say: Servus in Wien!
We hope you are going to have an unforgettable time here in Vienna!
Your OC,
Your President of IVSA Austria,
Victoria Drauch

About Austria
Austria is a landlocked country located in the middle of Europe,
which is part of the European Union. It is sharing borders with Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Italy.
With a population of only 8.7 million people there's a lot of beautiful nature left to discover! The landscape of Austira is very diverse.
In the very East you can find Neusiedler lake, surrounded by a vast
lowland with rather warm and dry climate, whereas the scenery in
southern and western Austria is dominated by the Alps, which
make up more than 60% of the nation's surface.


After World War II (in
1955) Austria has sworn
itself to a position of
permanent neutrality

Mozart was Austrian. So
were Haydn, Schubert,
and Strauss.

Legend has it that in
1191 Duke Leopold V got
blood splattered on his
tunic during battle.
When he removed his
sash a white band was
revealed. So that's said
to be the story of how
one of the oldest national flags was born.
About Vienna
Vienna is with 1.8 million inhabitants Austria's biggest and therefore capital city. The historic city center and Schönbrunn Castle are
designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The River Danube
flows right through the city, wineyards and the Vienna Wood are
surrounding it.
In 2016 Vienna was ranked first in the Mercer „Quality of living“ survey for the 8th time in a row.

The Schönbrunn Palace is an In addition to this, the gardens

Behind the palace you will find
beautiful French-style gardens
and the Gloriette, which was
used as a dining room by the
emperors and offers you a wonderful view over the palace
grounds and beyond.
This 6km² large park encompasses woodlands, meadows, an
amusement park (the socalled
Würstelprater) and one of the
city's most famous sights, the
Riesenrad, which is a 65 meter
high ferris wheel that was built
in 1897.
We are going to have a typical
Austrian dinner at a restaurant
located in the amusement park,
called Kolariks. So that's your
chance to try an original Austrian Schnitzel or many other delicious hearty dishes!

certainly not miss out on a tasting!
Kahlenberg Tour

more.

Postcongress
From 3rd to 7th August 2016 we're going to take you to one of Austrias' most famous areas – the Salzkammergut!
It stretches from the City of Salzburg eastwards along the Austrian
Alpine Foreland and the Northern Limestone Alps to the peaks of
the Dachstein Mountains, spanning the federal states of Upper
Austria, Salzburg and Styria. The region has a beautiful nature with
76 lakes and mountains.
The
name
‘Salzkammergut’
translates in English as
‘room for salt’. As the
name predicts, the
region has many salt
mines. One of the
most important ones
is in Hallstadt and is
nowadays an interesting attraction for visitors all around the world. In 1734 workers discovered a corpse of a
man in the mine. Researches concluded that the man was a victim
of a mining accident in 1000 BC. In 2002 Archaeologists made researches and discovered the oldest wooden staircase in Europe. The
exhibition gives especially information over the salt mining during
the stone time. Our hostel is located in St. Gilgen, a small community on the northern part of the lake Wolfgangssee. It is one of the
biggest lakes in the Salzkammmergut and it is possible to hike
around it on a wonderful trail of 27 km. You can also admire the
beautiful landscape on a boat trip over the lake. The water of the
Wolfgangsee was also priced from the EU for an outstanding quality.

Alcohol and tobacco
It is allowed to drink alcohol and smoke in public places. In restaurants, cafés and bars you can find a smoking and a non-smoking
area. The age limit for purchasing alcohol or tobacco in Vienna is 16
years.
Nice to know
When you are using an escalator in Vienna, make sure to stand on
the right side! The left side is for walking and locals don't like it at
all if you're standing in their way when they are in a hurry.
Tap water
Austrian tap water is of very high quality and therefore completely
safe to drink. This means that no matter where you go you can always get some tap water at public bathrooms without worrying
(unless a sign tells you otherwise of course). So let‘s be good to the
planet by not producing too much plastic waste and bring your
own bottle :)
Don't forget to take your bottles with you on ALL of our
trips!!!

Nametag Pictures
For the group arrangements you can find two different symbols on
your nametag - the deer and the Edelweiß flower - in different colours.
You will be divided into different groups during the congress so
that you get to know as many people as possible. To see in which
one you are for the next activity please consider either the colour
of the Edelweiß or the colour of the deer (for bigger groups) or the
colour of both in combination (for smaller groups).
With this example you would have
the pink Edelweiß and the red deer.
This means that for tours where bigger
groups are needed (e.g. University Tour)
we would tell you to build a gruop with
everybody who has a red deer on his/her
nametag.
When smaller groups are needed we
would tell you to team up with everybody
who has a pink Edelweiß AND a red deer.
