2012-13 Annual Report
Making a Difference for People with Disabilities annual report 2012 & 2013 MISSION STATEMENT Prospectus Berco is dedicated to inspiring people with disabilities or other special needs to lead meaningful lives by providing innovative services that promote dignity and respect. 840 William Lane, Reading, PA 19604 P: 610.372.4637 F: 610.372.6672 www.prospectusberco.org CEO/Executive Director’s Message 2012/2013 Bi-annual Report It is my distinct pleasure to present Prospectus Berco’s 2012 and 2013 bi-annual report. This publication highlights program statistics, activities, and accomplishments as well as recognizes individual, corporate, and foundation donors for the years 2012 and 2013. Also included for your review are audited financial statistics for fiscal years 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. But words and numbers certainly cannot tell our story as memorably as seeing the expressions on the faces of individuals benefitting from Prospectus Berco programs and services. It is my prediction that the photos used to punctuate each page of information will bring smiles to your face and the knowledge that this corporation is indeed inspiring individuals with intellectual disabilities or other special needs to lead meaningful lives. Throughout this two year report period, Prospectus Berco did some welldeserved celebrating, responded to a significant community need through a day program expansion, spread our wings in the world of social media, and implemented a corporate-wide employee development program. Launched in the spring of 2012 was a comprehensive employee training initiative called The ACT Formula. This 24-week learning journey inspired awareness, personal insight, and heightened knowledge on the critical importance of Accountability, Communication, and Trust in a successful workplace. Each participant’s focus is to be on themselves—where and how they need to change to be more accountable, to be a better communicator, and in so doing build the trust of those around them. The skills learned and practiced are not only applicable to our work lives and relationships but also to our personal lives and relationships. Evolution to a corporate culture based on consistent accountability, effective communication, and trustworthiness is an ongoing process that is transforming Prospectus Berco to a workplace that others envy. CEO/Executive Director’s Message In response to a strategic plan initiative, Prospectus Berco dove into the world of social media in July 2012 by claiming our Facebook page and writing our first post. With the help of a marketing volunteer intern, a Facebook page and account were created, and we began sharing our news with our “friends.” Please, if you haven’t already checked out our Facebook page, visit (and “like”) us at www.facebook.com/prospectusberco to see our latest postings and photos. Of course a really big accomplishment during this report period was the purchase and renovation of a 16,000 square foot building located at 1800 Kutztown Road for the expansion of our Adult Training Program. The real magic of this location is that the back of that property borders the side of our current William Lane day program and corporate office facility making the expansion close and convenient. The decision to pursue the acquisition of the former Super Shoes building was also the result of a strategic plan initiative addressing the need for additional adult training program space. With board guidance we successfully navigated the taxfree loan process and secured funding from Santander Bank to purchase and renovate this site. Dolan Construction provided the architectural and construction services to retrofit the fully accessible building with 4 classrooms, an office suite, a 3,000 square foot event room, and a commercial kitchen. The renovations were about 95% complete at the end of December 2013 with plans to begin serving about 60 individuals there in the first half of 2014. The lesson here is that if you get the right group of dedicated individuals together, bonded by a deep passion for a shared mission, success is sure to follow. March 2012 marked our 35th anniversary of Prospectus Berco’s incorporation and as a Berks County service provider. In honor of this milestone, we took the opportunity to have a year of celebrations—beginning with an open house in March and culminating with an anniversary gala featuring guest speaker Carson Kressley in November. It was a year of opportunities to share our story with the community, make new friends, showcase the many accomplishments of program participants, and celebrate the value this corporation brings to families and individuals of Berks County. I hope everyone enjoys this bi-annual report and I want to extend a sincere thank you to our donors, volunteers, family members, professionals, and most importantly the individuals receiving services through Prospectus Berco for partnering to make this amazing organization a highly respected and progressive service provider. We do what we can, based on our abilities, to share in the everyday tasks at our homes: setting the table, raking the leaves, cleaning our rooms, making our beds, and taking out the trash. We have “family time” when we eat together, watch TV, or play games or cards. Our families celebrate birthdays and different holidays throughout the year and, when we can, attend the various parties and banquets hosted by Prospectus Berco. As most families do, we look forward to the opportunities to take our family vacations together. Some of us have been to Disney World, Philadelphia Zoo, Pine Grove Dude Ranch, Jersey Shore, and various cruises throughout the year. Our families are strong, and we continue to build close and caring relationships with each other. 23 90 196 RESIDENTIAL SERVICES—LIFESHARING, FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES, FOSTER CARE As of December 31, 2013: FOSTER CARE # of Foster Care Participants 48 # of Foster Care Providers 22 Annual holiday party for children held in December with gifts provided by employees and Board of Directors.
