The PADI Dive Instructor Credential is your passport to an international lifestyle of great diving, travelling, meeting new
people, and best of all, working in a job you will really love.
The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the gateway to becoming a professional PADI diving instructor. As
the name indicates, this course emphasises professional development and learning. The IDC develops the leadership
abilities of individuals who already possess instructor-level dive theory knowledge (from their DM course) and role
model watermanship and rescue skills. It concentrates on developing your abilities as a professional dive educator and
shows you how to implement and apply the PADI system in confined water, classroom and open water environments.
Most importantly, you learn how to be confident at providing professional training that is fun but safe for all involved.
It’s about life transformations—both yours and those around you.
PADI’s IDC is the core of PADI Instructor training. It consists of two portions, the first is the Assistant Instructor (AI)
course and the second the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course, both these programs are incorporated in the
IDC or you can choose to do each one separately.
The fun part of instructor training is interacting with course participants while creating friendships that continue long
after the course concludes.
The challenging part of this course is your personal commitment to the training. The course requires you to complete
all the self-study Knowledge Reviews before the course begins and to prepare daily assignments for teaching
presentations daily. Organization and dedication are the key.
After becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor, you will be able to conduct the entire range of PADI programs
from Discover Scuba Diving up to Divemaster. You may also choose to acquire specialty instructor ratings in areas of
interest, such as Digital Underwater Photographer or Enriched Air Diver.

Course Activities
1.
Standards Knowledge
You will be given an examination on the PADI standards and procedures, this is an open book exam, and is
designed to assess your knowledge of where to obtain information from your PADI instructor manual for a range
of courses. If any weaknesses are ascertained then individual guidance and self-study can be recommended.
2.
Academic Modules
There will be Academic Presentations given throughout the course. The topics of these presentations are set
out in the AI course outline.
3.
Orientation to Academic Teaching (Class room)
You will be taken through a workshop situation on PADI’s Academic Teaching and throughout the course will be
performing academic presentations. You will be evaluated on each of these presentations. After each
evaluation you will be given your score and then a critic of your performance and suggestion of any necessary
changes where you could improve.
4.
Orientation to Confined Water Teaching (Pool)
You will be shown how to conduct a confined water presentation. In this section you will learn the most
commonly encountered problems and practice your confined water teaching. This will involve a briefing,
demonstration, problem solving and debriefing. When giving your presentations you will be in charge of a
number of “Students” (Instructor Candidates) plus you will have one assistant. You will be expected to brief
these “Open Water Students” and conduct your demonstration. The students will then proceed to attempt the
assigned skill. Some of these “Students” will be assigned problems, you will be required to recognise these
problems, solve or prevent them and debrief afterwards. You will once again be evaluated after each
presentation and debriefed afterwards.
5.
Orientation to Open Water Teaching (Ocean)
This will be conducted the same as the Confined Water presentations, however minimal demonstration will be
given by you and you will start to combine several skills into one presentation. During the course you will be
given Diving skills presentations to perform. Further skills from the Advanced and Rescue courses will also get
practiced.
6.
General
Course Orientation will be conducted at the beginning of the course briefly running through all activities and
requirements.
This could be your office !!
Who is your Course Director ????
Gary Brennand, your Course Director started diving in 1983 during a trip with a friend and
fell in love with it. He worked his way through to instructor while doing IT management
work around Perth, Australia. Once an Instructor he spent as much of his time as possible
diving and instructing on a part time basis. In 2005 after making a career and life style
change to full time diving he moved to Cairns (the Great Barrier Reef) to expand his diving
experience. He instructed for a number of companies and even worked on the boats as a
Professional Underwater Photographer while teaching an IDC (instructor courses) every two months. In 2009 he made the
choice to move to back to Perth and now works as Course Director for Dolphin Dive Fremantle and Training Manager at
Exmouth Diving Centre.
With a high success rate and pleasant teaching style the Candidates enjoy their program and continue their career path. The
IDC Team needs to have fun, as this is what your own classes should be like. I know that to be successful in this industry
you need to be very customer orientated and business driven. My real world experience will help you enormously. As it is at
this point in your diving career that you make your most important decision, invest wisely and do not just book on any IDC
but book on a “life style” with Dolphin Dive Fremantle and Gary, make use of our experience and gain valuable information
