Totally Amped
and Ready!
eason 2015 is well underway, and what an exciting
start! Swim Week was amazing, with a multitude of
lines presented and new companies debuted, as well
as fashion shows and excitement galore—and, oh my, the
parties! The swimwear industry is on fire, and designers are
on their game.
Note to self—always take a backup pair of comfy shoes
to SwimShow. I was not expecting such tremendous growth
in that show, and I chose to wear some new high heels to
the event. Never again; I think I clocked about 14 miles (in
one day), walking around the show in those shoes, and I
could not walk the rest of the night! Judy Stein should really
think about renting golf carts (just kidding?).
While at the IMG event one night, I got stuck in a typhoon.
OK, maybe not a typhoon, but it sure seemed like one. The
storm caught me off-guard while I was in the cabana out by the pool. Rather
than run for it, I decided to stay put on the couch under the cabana and take
cover with some pillows. Hey—as long as I had my complimentary sangria,
things couldn’t be too bad—right? It was crazy! And afterward the street in
front of the Raleigh looked like lake Collins Ave. I had to swim over to the Salon
Allure fashion event, but it was well worth the effort—it was fantastic.
So much to see and buy, and for the first time in my life, I was happy not to be
a buyer. I wouldn’t know where to begin! In this issue, we present some of the
highlights, with photos of Swim Week in our feature on page 24. And as if that
isn’t enough excitement, we talk about the explosion of jewelry for resort on
page 44. Jewelry now adorns more than just our necks, fingers and wrists; it’s
on swimwear, resortwear and footwear. In fact, some of the footwear we saw at
SwimShow was so glitzy, it looked like it needed to come with a security guard.
Our swimwear and resortwear fashion presentation on page 30,“Wahini
Beach Break,” aims the spotlight at the ever-popular athletic-surfer trend,
and some bestsellers for Season 2015 are highlighted in our cover-ups and
accessories round-up on page 50. We were on the prowl for new lines
during Swim Week, and in “Making Waves” on p. 18, you will see some of
what we found. Finally, on page 58, buyers and retailers give their opinion
of Swim Week in “Your Turn.”
As always, thank you for reading and enjoying The Swim Journal. I want to
hear from you! Please send me an email any time; your comments and
suggestions are always welcome.

Body Glove Launches
Activewear Line
ody Glove is bringing its philosophy of “do what you love,
love what you do” to activewear this fall. Breathe by Body
Glove is designed for the woman who makes her workout
an enjoyable experience, not just a fitness regimen. Think jogging
on the beach, hiking through the woods or taking in the sunset
while surfing in an exotic locale.
The new collection embraces the outdoor lifestyle, which is a
natural extension of Body Glove’s California surf and beach cultureinspired identity. “Connecting to nature is really important to the
Body Glove brand, and we wanted to extend that to all types of
activities,” says Noah Gellis, Body Glove Apparel’s vice president of
sales. “Now in addition to surf, swim and the overall beach lifestyle,
Breathe brings Body Glove’s philosophy of enjoying the outdoors
to all areas of fitness.”
Designed to make women feel beautiful, confident and
empowered, the collection includes everything from highperformance garments to casual workout essentials. Key pieces
include support bras; seamless, breathable workout wear; tops in a
super-soft burnout material and French terry styles; and quick-dry
hybrid suits for water sports, such as surfing and stand-up paddle
boarding. For more information, visit bodyglove.com.

Aqua Green Launches
ECO PEACE
Sustainable lifestyle brand Aqua Green has created a hip,
new swimwear collection for the young designer market.
ECO PEACE by Aqua Green is locally designed, sourced
and produced in Southern California, and utilizes new
technologies in “water free” printing, further reducing its
carbon footprint.
Inspired by festival style—think Lollapalooza,
Coachella and Bonnaroo—the ECO PEACE girl has a
bohemian spirit with a touch of glam and glitter. Using
sustainability and social consciousness as her mantras,
she knows where she’s going and wants to protect the
world while she does it. The collection includes a variety
of looks that reflect her confident, free-spirited style,
including exotic tiger-print crop tops, ethnic-inspired
one-pieces, colorful graphic print tankinis, and plenty of
beaded, macramé fringe detailing.
Aqua Green employs a variety of environmentally
friendly initiatives across all of its brands, including its
contemporary ECO SWIM line, which is in more than 300
better retail stores. “Not only are we helping to clean up
and bring awareness to environmental issues in the world,
we also provide a forum of goodwill for our customers,”
says Sandra Davidoff, director of brand management for
Aqua Green. For more information, visit ecoswim.com.

CURVENV
LAS VEGAS
Introduces 20|40
Resort Hotel and
Spa Program
C
URVEXPO debuted its 20|40 Resort
Hotel and Spa Program at the Las Vegas
edition of the trade show, held Aug. 18-19.
CURVENV LAS VEGAS, which coincides with
WWDMAGIC, Project and ENK Vegas, presents
intimate, swimwear and men’s underwear brands
twice yearly at The Venetian hotel. The exclusive new program
introduced 20 leading resort and hotel industry representatives
from more than 350 properties to 40 intimate apparel and
swimwear brands. Representatives from such properties as the St.
Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point, Calif.; The Westmoor Club
in Nantucket, Mass.; The Boulders in Carefree, Ariz.; and the Four
Seasons hotels in Toronto and Beverly Hills, Calif., among many
others, had the opportunity to meet with brands such as Blush,
Eberjey, Love Haus, Miraclesuit Swimwear, Orlebar Brown, Trina
Turk and Vannina Vesperini.
CURVEXPO helped facilitate connections by booking more than
120 appointments between brands and buyers during the show. In
addition, it held a successful workshop, which identified the
purchasing needs and limitations of resort, hotel and spa
boutiques, and provided tips for brands on how to adapt their
collections for that market segment. CURVEXPO plans to continue
the 20|40 program in future editions of the show. For more
information, visit curvexpo.com.

Attendance Grows at the 32nd Annual SwimShow
he swimwear scene in Miami continues to grow—
and break records. The 32nd annual Swimwear
Association of Florida’s SwimShow expanded this year
to fill all four halls—that’s 550,000 square feet of exhibition
space—in the Miami Beach Convention Center. The bigger
show attracted a bigger crowd, as attendance grew 15
percent over last year.
The trade show, which took place July 19-22, brought
together designers, vendors and swimwear buyers from
across the globe. Nearly 10,000 people from 60 countries
attended SwimShow, which features more than 3,000
women’s, men’s and kids’ lines. “Always the highlight of the
T
swim season, we were thrilled to introduce a bigger and
better-than-ever SwimShow in Miami Beach this year,” says
Judy Stein, executive director of the Swimwear Association
of Florida. “We welcomed new designers, a new floor plan,
and new enthusiasm over the course of four action-packed
days and nights, celebrating the best of what this show and
industry have to offer.” Highlights of this year’s show
included swimwear and lifestyle trend seminars by
PeclersParis; SwimShow’s annual fashion show; and
amenities such as a nail salon, mini-massages and a tech
lounge with a “selfie” station. For more information, visit
swimshow.com.
SPANX Introduces Patent-Pending
Shaping Technology
Continuing its shaping revolution, Spanx is adding yet another innovation to its
evolving line of products. The Spanx 2015 swim collection introduces patentpending Bond-Voyage technology, a groundbreaking shaping system in which the
suit does all the work. The swim-specific technology incorporates extremely flat
waterproof bonding, which is strategically placed on the stomach to provide flexible
shaping. It creates a sleek transition from fabric to skin, preventing spillage, and
incorporates a shape-friendly, graduated release along the sides and hips.
The technology is incorporated into the Spanx 2015 swim collection, which
includes an array of problem-solving yet fashionable designs. “From athleticinspired rash guards and tankinis to chic one-pieces and swim dresses, this season
our swim line offers women a range of fun, fashion-forward slimming suits perfect
for the beach and beyond,” says Spanx founder Sara Blakely. Spanx swimwear is
made with SPANX Swim-X fabric that is both LYCRA Beauty and XTRA LIFE LYCRA
certified to provide a long-lasting fit, comfortable shaping and UPF50+ protection.

“Fashion is one of the most beautiful expressions of a woman’s
individuality,” believes Amita Naithani, designer of her namesake
line. “It exhibits her choices, her hopes, her dreams and how she
views herself. A piece of clothing is inherently something more…it
envelops and caresses, gently making the wearer feel comfortable,
secure, beautiful and happy.”
Born in India, Naithani obtained a degree in fashion design
and established her own fashion house 15 years ago. She recently
debuted her collection at SwimShow in Miami, and is currently
based in New York.
Amita Naithani’s day-to-dinner 2015 Resortwear collection is
exactly that—a one-stop-shop for a fabulous vacation wardrobe,
leaving little need for anything more. Feminine and romantic, the
collection features hand-crafted, figure-flattering styles, such as
bikinis, tunics, pants, cover-ups, dresses and more, which whisk the
wearer from day activities to evening events in timeless style. Each

Pacific & Driftwood
Capturing the spirit of nature and the vibe of California’s lifestyle and diverse
landscape, Founder and Designer Christian Cox created Pacific & Driftwood to be a
statement of creative expression and individuality.
It all started the day Cox, a self-proclaimed “fourth-generation Cali girl with a
Gypsy heart,” decided to create her own swimsuit to wear while on vacation. She
had been working as an associate designer for a luxury women’s wear label. It soon
became obvious that people were interested in what she was wearing and wanted
to know where to buy it. A light bulb went off, and Cox quickly shifted gears, turning
her living quarters into a personal design studio and manufacturing facility. Orders
began flooding in more quickly than expected, as the line gained a cult-like following.
Deep-plunge maillots, high-cut legs, and exquisitely detailed lace-up and stringtie backs prove that sexy skin is in. One- and two-pieces sport such motifs as the
Beatles and the bald eagle. Non-traditional fabrics and components are used in
the designs, including luxe leather, upcycled vintage pieces and bone. The 2015
collection, recently shown at Salon Allure, has grown to include onesies, cover-ups,
booty board shorts, leather pieces and sexy rompers.
With an office and showroom located in the downtown Los Angeles fashion district,
Pacific & Driftwood has been featured in such publications as ELLE, Cosmopolitan,
Cake, Foam and Zen. For more information, visit pacificanddriftwood.com.

Muryx
It was a simple idea, with a classic past. Two Italian
women—Julia Nasi and her mother Ana Cristina, inspired
by the Cote d’Azur and Caribbean beaches—decided
to update the iconic, basic one-piece swimsuit. They
would do so, however, by applying what they cheekily
coin as their “4-S Rule—Simplicity, Style, Seduction and
Small Luggage.”
“We wanted to present the classic seamless tank—
the immortal icon worn in the ’60s by Liz Taylor, Audrey
Hepburn and Grace Kelly,” says Ana Cristina Nasi. “This
style experienced a comeback in the ’90s, but it has
always been a symbol of elegance and grace.” The classic tank-style maillot is available in 11 stunning solids
“reminiscent of tropical paradises” in low-cut or high-cut leg silhouettes constructed of premium Lycra.
To accessorize these solid suits, soft and flowing dresses and kaftans are offered in two lengths, in solids
or prints, including a stunning multi-colored feather print offered in two color ways, which may be worn
with all of the shades of the swimwear. Gold-tone bracelets and necklaces are offered to accessorize the
swimwear and resortwear.

Beach in July reached a zenith with
swim and resort’s 2015
presentation, as every aspect grew
exponentially—from the trade shows to the
fashion shows to the sheer number of events.
The Swimwear Association of Florida’s 32nd
annual SwimShow & Lingerie Show, which took
place at the Miami Beach Convention Center
from July 19-22, added 150,000 square feet,
for a total of 550,000 square feet throughout
four halls. Exhibitors increased to 3,000 brands
in 450 booths, according to Judy Stein,
SwimShow organizer, who redesigned the
layout for a smooth transition.
“Our new floor plan divided the show into
four key categories for more managed traffic
flow and easier access for retailers,” she says.
The sections included “Palm Row,” for designer
collections; “Sunset Shores,” for trendy and

boutique; “Paradise Isle,” for contemporary, better
and men’s; and “Coconut Key,” for junior’s, missy,
surf, cover-ups and children.
“Mostly all of these vendor categories increased,
and we even tested a small amount of activewear,
which we’ll grow if there’s interest,” adds Stein.
Buyers, whose attendance of 10,000 rose 15
percent from last year, were pampered with onsite
spa treatments, and stayed connected through
cyber cafes and social media posting stations.
Cabana, a three-day trade show that launched
last year, doubled its size to encompass two
oceanfront tents between 21st and 22nd streets.
The number of exhibitors rose from 45 to 100.
Buyers for Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys New York
and Fred Segal were among the attendees, which
overall increased by 35%. They appreciated the
beach-chic aesthetic, replete with a hip, healthy
café and coconut water served in branded shells.
Lyanne Roger, co-owner of Nic del Mar store in
Coral Gables, Fla., returned to Cabana for its
intimate setting and boutique focus. She wrote
orders with Miami-based Maya, including their
braided crochet style, and Kiini, a buzzworthy line
by a Turkish designer in New York. “Customers
asked about Kiini even before the show opened,
since it’s favored by swim bloggers,” she says,
regarding its handmade bikinis with bold, multicolored stitching and crochet. “They like anything
with crochet, and these also happen to be
comfortable with a great fit.”
At the nearby W South Beach from July 19-22,
Salon Allure celebrated its fifth anniversary with 40
exhibitors, including Lolli, Spanx, Tyler Rose and
Tavik, showing their collections in luxury hotel
suites. Salon Allure provides a quiet, intimate
setting, in which 346 buyers took part—50 of them
new stores, according to cofounder Rick Fatzinger.

models and organizing the fashion show,” stated Fatzinger.
Nearly 1,000 revelers came out for opening night’s fashion
show presented by LYCRA XTRA LIFE, featuring such
Sports Illustrated models as Anastasia Ashley and Kate
Bock. Non-attendees just needed a computer or
smartphone, not only to view the show in real time but to
purchase orders directly from the runway through a
shopping initiative with Molly Brown’s Swimwear stores,
based in Newport Beach, Calif. The online trunk show
marked a first for Salon Allure.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim (MBFWS) also
celebrated a milestone with its jam-packed 10th anniversary
from July 17-21 at the Raleigh hotel. Besides its usual tents,
“Cabana Grande” and “Oasis,” designer presentations and
events took place in the penthouse and around the pool at
various times. In all, 34 designers were featured, including
Aquarella, Indah, Caitlin Kelly, Luli Fama, Caffé and Dolores
Cortés. A dozen collections were shown for the first time.
Sponsor Mercedes-Benz commemorated the occasion by
commissioning 10 swimwear lines, such as Mara Hoffman,
Nanette Lepore and We Are Handsome, to create an exclusive
print in which to wrap its 2015 C-Class car. The prints also
adorned limited-edition caftans, which were modeled at the
opening night pool party. Parked at the entrance to the hotel
and tents, the colorful cars sparked a selfie frenzy. The
MBFWS events drew 10,000 attendees, 700 of which were
buyers and press.

From footwear to swimwear to

a splash for Season 2015!
By N. Jayne Seward
T
hese days, it’s not only the water that
sparkles in the sun at the beach or pool.
Designers are accessorizing swimwear and
resortwear with jewelry that’s inspired by
the sun, surf and sand.
“Beach/resort wear has become extremely fashion-
able over the past few years,” says Lexi Segré, owner
and designer of Lexi Jewelry. “With pieces suitable for
either a day at the beach, an afternoon cocktail at the
beach bar, or an elegant seaside dinner, women are
looking for jewelry to accessorize [their] outfits.”

For Resort ’15, many swimwear designers have
collaborated with jewelry designers or are incorporating
jewelry into their collections. Caitlin Kelly collaborated
with California-based Artemisa Rivas to create detachable chain necklaces and bracelets, which complete her
glamorous day-to-evening looks. Elizabeth Southwood
has added sexy body chains to her Luxe Sauvage line,
and supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio translated her
affinity for jewelry into handmade trims for her debut
collection, ále by Alessandra.

As swim and resortwear become increasingly
popular, women are merging their lifestyles with a
beach-to-chic aesthetic. Whether poolside at a resort
or rocking out at a music festival, women are in the
swim—and they’re accessorizing. Popular looks
include body jewelry, finger/hand bracelets, tassel
necklaces, large earrings, stacked rings and plenty of
color. Nearly Naked’s collection of jewelry ranges from
body chains to belly and hand chains, and even
jewelry for the feet—aka “barefoot sandals.”

was surprised at how exceptionally large
SwimShow was this year! I’ve been a retail buyer
at Beach Bazaar for years now (it’s in my blood),
and each show is getting bigger and better. I was
extremely excited to some of my favorite jewelry lines
at SwimShow, including Rose Gonzales and Saachi,

manufacturers had to offer, and we were so excited to share

his was my first time at
the Miami show. I have

for 20 years, and have just
recently returned to it after a
two-year absence. After lots of
thought and seeing the need in Edmonton, I decided
to open my own store. Going to the show as a firsttimer, I was very overwhelmed. I don’t think I’ve ever
been to a swim show of that size, with everything that
a retailer needs. I found so many choices, and being
able to see everything on fit models was a huge help. I
definitely noticed all of the new style changes from just
two years ago, and as always, the colors and prints
were amazing. Some styles and prints are classics, but
change is good thing. There were so many choices
and lines that I’d never even heard of. I will be able to
carry items that other stores in my city will not have.
The layout of the show was easy to follow, and I felt
very relaxed and comfortable walking around. We
went to the fashion show on one evening, where all the
manufacturers presented something from their lines. It
was awesome—what a way to end the day! SwimShow
was spectacular—a show that is not to be missed.”
