Seven Howe graduates to serve our country
If fireworks are your thing,
you're in luck this week.
You can travel to three
different towns on three
different nights and see great
shows for no cost.
Sherman starts the weekend
early with their "Lights on
the Lake." It will take place
on Thursday, July 3 from 6p10p at Pecan Grove West
Park.

Denison will hold their 27th
annual event on Friday, July
4 at Forest Park.
Howe will hold their 4th
annual event on Saturday,
July 5 at the high school
from 5p-9p.
This is the time of year that I
go to fireworks shows and
feel like I used a product
called "ON" instead of
"OFF." However, it's very
necessary to use your
favorite repellent even if it

There is no official ledger
kept of how many Howe
graduating seniors from
one class has entered the
military just after
ceremonies, however, it is
pretty safe to say that this
is one of the most in the
last 70 years. All four
major branches of the
military are covered by
these seven individuals.

Howe Fire Department to hold fireworks show Saturday at high school
Howe’s Fire Department's 4th Annual
Firework Festival is set for Saturday
evening, July 5, from 5pm-9pm at the
Howe High School parking lot.
As in years prior, there will be lots of
activities going on with vendors set up
to sell a variety of goods.
The total time of the fireworks show is
expected to be 45-50 minutes long.
Howe Fire Chief Robert Maniet said the
fireworks show will start at dusk, but plenty
of food will be available before-hand.
You're advised to bring your lawn chairs
and your most favorite bug repellent.

On Friday, Howe Police Sergeant, Mike Hill

"After that, it's still hard, but not quite as hard as
phase one." Kirk is entering in as a Private and
his goal is to be a Gunnery Sergeant before his
term is up.
Jake Akins decided on the U.S. Navy becuase
he was influenced by his grandfather, Jerry
Lancaster, who served in the Army and was in
Vietnam.
Kirk, the son of Chad and Andrea Kirk, was the
first to leave, as he is already in San Diego in
basic training for the U.S. Marines. He left
Howe on June 23.
Akins said that he chose the Navy because it fit
what he wanted to do later on in life in the
medical field.
"Ever since I was nine, I thought I was going to
be a Marine. It's what my dad was and so is
my brother (Matthew Conditt). And that helped
push me forward." said Kirk.
"The fact that I can get out of Howe, Texas
because I've been here for 18 years plus the fact
that the education opportunity is good." said
Akins.
Kirk said before he left that he was excited, but
ws starting to get a little nervous as the date
grew near.
Akins said that he was brought up in a family
that believed that they should serve. His parents
are Greg and Sue Akins and he said that his
parents have mixed emotions about his new
venture in life.
"My dad and my brother told me that they
schedule things in three phases and the first
phase is the worst because they will try to weed
out the people they don't want." said Kirk.
"Moms are moms. They don't want you to go,

Eduardo Cruz will also be heading to Fort
Benning in September, but Nicholson will
have already been there by then. He will be
leaving July 8.
"I've always had a great respect for veterans. My
dad was a veteran in the Army and it's a great
career path with great benefits.

Wrestling addictions through salvation
Steve Sasser has performed in
countries around the globe, trained
with Stone Cold Steve Austin and
knocked out Killer Tim Watson's
teeth. He's won matches against

known characters and beat drug

life back into a life of despair.
Sasser has experience overcoming
trials from physical injuries during
his wrestling years, heartbreak,
empty bank accounts and debt, but
found a friend in Roger Tidwell
who would eventually lead the
fallen star to Christ.
Steve Sasser was born in
Alabama but his family moved
to Howe when he was in the
third grade. His mother and
father built the Dairy Queen in
Howe back in the 1960's (the
building that now is used for a
parking facility across from #1
Fitness). He grew up on
Cassandra Street in Howe, where
his mother still resides. Sasser
recalls his first impressions of
Howe were being shocked that
there was only a predominantly
white population.
Despite his conversion, getting
married and finding a good job,
Sasser's addiction demons would
change his seemingly transformed

That's what I'm struggling with right now.
Anytime that Sasser would talk about his
troubles, he would always refer back to Tidwell
as a source of strength through friendship. One
of Tidwell's birthdays, Sasser gave him a plaque
that was called "The Best Friend Award."
Tidwell gave him one back with the scripture of
Isaiah 40:31, "But they who wait for the Lord
shall renew their strength; they shall mount up
with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be
weary; they shall walk and not faint."

When asked about his current level of faith,
he paused and said that was a tough question.
"I've still got faith, but I'm still drinking and
doing wrong things. I feel like as long as I'm
drinking and not living right, none of my
prayers are going to be answered." said
Sasser. "I could give a long testimony, but
I'd (expletive) some people off because there
might be some cuss words in there. Not that
cussing makes me sound any better, but it's
just like drinking. It's a habit."

Howe Softball All-Stars
Howe's Garrett Fulenchek made his debut for the
Braves organization after being drafted earlier this
month 66th overall in the Major League Draft.
Fulenchek, who is pitching for the Gulf Coast League
Braves, entered Tuesday game in the 5th inning with
the Braves trailing the CGL Yankees2, 7-1.
In that 5th inning, Fulenchek faced six batters. He
walked one, gave up one hit and struck out three.
That was a pretty impressive outing for his first
professional appearance.
The Braves rallied after Fulenchek's fine outing and
promptly put a four-run bottom of the 5th on the
board and eventually came back to beat the Yankees2,
12-11.
It was the Braves first win of the year bringing their
record to 1-3.
Fulenchek also made his first professional start on
Saturday when he pitched two shutout innings, giving
up no runs on one hit and one walk and one strikeout.
So far, he's the only GCL Brave to not give up a run.
He is scheduled to start again on Friday, July 4.
