Looking Ahead to 2015!
After finishing 2014 with an incredibly
attended Holiday Open House, as well as
final networkings and ribbon cuttings,
the Chamber is already in high gear for
this year’s events.
After enjoying a busy 2014 packed with
over 45 networkings and as many ribbon
cuttings, the Chamber is ready to do it
again! Networkings are hosted by a different member business each Thursday at
either 8 a.m. or 5 p.m. Currently, the calendar is booked well into July; members
are encouraged to contact the Chamber
to confirm a 2015 networking date as
soon as possible.
We are streamlining details for our
Breakfast Speaker Series schedule! Each
year, the Chamber hosts 3 to 4 Breakfast
Speaker events at Fox Den Country Club
or Rothchild’s Catering Center; these
events let attendees network while enjoying a full 7:30 a.m. breakfast and then an
informative and interesting hour’s presentation by a noted speaker. Past guests
have included Dr. Bill Bass (forensic
anthropologist, author and Body Farm
founder), Coach Phillip Fulmer (UT
Volunteers Football), Randy Boyd (CEO
of PetSafe) and many others. This year
the Chamber is looking at a roster of various guests including a visit by Dr. Bass to
premiere his latest book in the popular
“Body Farm” series! Please stay tuned.
Our Annual Silent and Live Auction
and Dinner takes place each spring and is
the feature event of our year! It is also the
Chamber’s biggest fundraiser for both
our Continuing Education Grants and for
a donation to a local non-profit organization. This year’s Auction will be Friday,
April 24. Sponsors are needed and they
will enjoy our enthusiastic promotion as
soon as they send us their commitment.
Sponsorships are available now at the
Presenting, Event and Community levels!
Please contact the Chamber at 675-7057
for a form or details on the many benefits. Volunteers are essential as well! If
you are interested in helping put together a fabulous evening of food, formal wear
and fantastic items, please let us know.
The Chamber will again participate in
the Town of Farragut’s Annual Independence Day Parade on July 4 and hopes to
enjoy the same beautiful mild weather as
last year. More parade details will be
made available as we receive them, but
any member businesses are welcome to
bring a vehicle or walk with the Chamber
group that morning. There is no cost to
this great event which offers fun exposure for your business. Please contact the
Chamber to reserve your space with us in
the parade.
The Fall 5K will enter its 21st year with
a Saturday date to be announced. As
before, we will need volunteers to help on
our planning committee and the morning
of the race and walk itself. Help is needed on the course (pointers), at registration and the finish line (cheering/ water).
This is a wonderful event for families to get
involved in and a great opportunity for students seeking community service hours.

New Intern for New Year
The Chamber is excited to welcome its
new intern for this Spring, Grant
Valeriano! Grant will be invaluable in his
assistance with all aspects of daily
Chamber activities on a volunteer basis
as part of his Senior Project course at
Farragut High School.
Grant, a graduating senior, will attend
Vanderbilt University beginning Fall 2015
and major in Human Organizational
Management at Peabody.
Grant will be in communication with
many Chamber members during his
semester here. He will primarily conduct
interviews and write the Who’s Who article featured in each Chamber Life
newsletter. The 300-word article is
offered monthly to a member of the
Chamber and allows them to inform and
educate people about their business.
Please warmly welcome Grant to the
Chamber and the Farragut West Knox
business community!

Notes
Welcome to our new Farragut Who’s who…
West Knox Chamber members!
TDS
The Chamber welcomes these businesses who have joined us
Telecom
recently in the month of December:
by Grant Valeriano
Bettye Sisco
It is that time again when we make
fresh starts for a brighter future. We
resolve to get in shape, lose weight,
improve career paths, etc. Then there are
the heartfelt promises we make to others,
whether aloud or in our minds. We want
to reverse bad feelings in old relationships or seek out new relationships. Here
are some of those thoughts and ideas others have expressed.
• “We will open the book. Its pages are
blank. We are going to put words on
them ourselves. The book is called
"Opportunity" and its first chapter is
New Year's Day."
~ Edith L. Pierce
• "We spend January walking
through our lives, room by room,
drawing up a list of work to be done,
cracks to be patched. Maybe this year
it would be nice to walk through the
rooms of our lives not looking for
flaws, but for potential."
~Ellen Goodman
• "When was the last time you did
something for the first time?"
~ Sally Edwards
Now that we have entered a New Year
here are some thoughts that prove it.
• You hear most of your jokes via e-mail
instead of in person.
• Your grandmother clogs up your email inbox asking you to send her a
JPEG file of your newborn so she can
create a screen saver.
• You enter your password on the
microwave.
• You haven't played solitaire with a
real deck of cards in years.
• You have a list of 15 phone numbers
to reach your family of four.
• You chat several times a day with a
stranger from Canada, but you haven't
spoken with your next door neighbor all
last year.
• You check the ingredients on a can of
chicken noodle soup to see if it
contains Echinacea.
• You pull up in your own driveway and
use your cell phone to see if anyone is
home.
• You buy a computer and a week later
it is out of date and now sells for half
the price you paid.
• The concept of using real money
instead of credit or debit cards to make
a purchase is foreign to you.
• Your idea of being organized is multicolored Post-it notes.
So my wishes for all of us and for myself
are to try new things, say at least one
thing each day that is kind to someone,
and REALLY laugh more, believe more
and love more.

Welcome Back
Renewing Members
The Farragut West Knox Chamber welcomes back these businesses who have renewed their investment in the Chamber as of this past December. We are privileged to count them as Farragut West Knox
Chamber of Commerce members! We urge members to patronize one another when the goods or services a member can provide are needed. It is also our hope that area residents recognize the commitment a business makes to its community when it becomes part of its local chamber of commerce and
reward that commitment with their patronage.

In 1969, LeRoy
Carlson began his
dream to provide
telecommunications
to regions of the
entire country. Mr.
Carlson epitomized the result of a clear
vision and hard work. What began as a collection of 10 small, rural telephone companies has evolved into a Fortune 1000
company with six million customers
known as Telephone and Data Systems
(TDS). For more than 40 years, they have
connected customers with reliable, highquality products and services. The part of
Mr. Carlson’s company we know is TDS
Telecom.
However, in a sea of other competitors,
it is TDS Telecom’s commitment to each
community they serve that truly sets them
apart. TDS supports and contributes to
many local civic organizations, including
school athletic teams, the Red White and
Blue festival, Art in the Park, and many
holiday events. Always striving to advance
their local area, TDS has always encouraged employee participation in the community. And what better way to serve the
community than providing faster Internet?
Recently, TDS has announced that residents in Farragut will be among the first in
Tennessee with access to 1Gig Internet
service this year. “The launch of 1Gig service means area residents have access to
the fastest Internet service in the nation,”
says Matt Apps, manager of Internet
Product Management and Development at
TDS. The 1Gig service is about one hundred times faster than the national average Internet speed. To put this in perspective, customers can now transfer HD
movies in seconds and connect remotely to
their office or telecommute seamlessly,
even on multiple devices.
Services of high speeds provided by a
company, top to bottom, that truly cares
about the community is hard to surpass.
Mr. Carlson set out to provide a fair means
that allowed rural communities to have
access to the same level of advanced communications services that metropolitan
areas receive. Not only has this goal been
accomplished, but TDS has raised the bar
for telecommunication companies nationwide. For more information, residents
can visit www.tdstelecom.com or call
866-44-TDSTV.

HELP MAKE YOUR
GOLDEN YEARS GOLDEN

When it comes to saving for retirement,
small business owners are on their own.
No matter how old – or young – you are,
planning ahead is crucial.
Keep in mind that retirement investments should be long-term. If you take
money out before retirement age, you’ll
probably be penalized. The smart
approach is to invest in retirement funds,
then leave them to grow. Rules for retirement products change often and the information you should know about each one is
more than can be printed here.
The bottom line is to consult with a qualified financial planner who will explain
your options in detail.
•
INDIVIDUAL
RETIREMENT
ACCOUNTS (IRAS) allow you to set aside a
portion of your annual income for retirement. There are several kinds of IRAs.
• SIMPLIFIED EMPLOYEE PENSION
(SEP) is a retirement plan for selfemployed individuals and small companies. It’s similar to an IRA, but with more
flexibility. The amount of your taxdeductible contribution can vary from year
to year.
• KEOGH PLANS allow the selfemployed to save for retirement. Keogh
owners contribute to a profit-sharing plan
or pension, under a qualified trustee.
