Phi Beta Mu Members — Prominent Contributors at Midwest 2006
Many members of Phi Beta Mu have won national or international honors in 2006. Many are to be featured at Midwest 2006.
Here are some of those among us who have a major roll to play this year at Midwest 2006. It is certain that some who deserve
recognition are omitted. Please submit that information so they can be included later.
John Whitwell, Director Emeritus at Michigan State University shares his conducting expertise in a practical
workshop that he has entitled Conducting and Teaching, We Must Excel at Both Participants can expect to
leave this clinic with some exercises for both the conductor and the ensemble to enhance nonverbal communication. Whitwell joined the MSU faculty after highly successful tenures at Stephen F. Austin State University in
Nacogdoches, TX and Abilene Christian University in Abilene, TX. His bands have performed for TMEA,
Midwest, and CBDNA among other featured performances. Whitwell has received many honors,
including the Citation of Excellence by the National Band Association in 1980 and 1985, the Kappa
Kappa Psi Distinguished Service to Music Award, the American School Band Directors Association
Edwin Franko Goldman Award. Wednesday - 8:30 AM and Saturday - 9:30 AM
George Boulden, Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky, and Susan
Creasap, Associate Director of Bands at Morehead State University will present The Care
and Feeding of the Second Band: Second Band Does Not Mean Second Best.
The objectives of this clinic are to provide strategies for achieving success with the Second
Band and suggest ideas for professional development designed to support the Second
Band Director. Presenting with them are Don Devany, Peter Griffin, and Christopher
Knighten. All presenters are active conductors of bands that are not considered the premier
ensemble at their respective institutions. Wednesday and Thursday - 8:30 AM
Cheryl Floyd, Director of Bands at Hill country Middle School in Austin, Tx will conduct her band’s Midwest
Concert at 12:30 PM on Thursday. Their program spans the centuries from Purcell to Ticheli. Mrs. Floyd is
well-known as a wonderful teacher, and this concert is sure to impress and inspire. Cheryl is widely appreciated as a middle school specialist, which has kept her busy as guest conductor and adjudicator throughout
Texas and beyond. She is also unusually active in the area of commissioning new works for middle school
bands. Cheryl is also active as a clinician and author on topics that relate to the middle school band and the
rehearsal techniques she advocates for directors of middle school bands. Thursday 12:30 PM
Colonel Arnald Gabriel, is one of the true heroes of our profession. In his work with some
of the best in the world, he raised the standard for all of us and caused our field to become
more respected and acknowledged in the music world. In this interview with Tim Lautzenheiser, we have a chance to learn about the life and work of this living legend of the band
world. You may be surprised to learn that his heroism is more than metaphorical and extends past our protected world. An important link to our heritage! Friday - 4:30 PM
Of course, Dr. Tim’s solo act is also at Midwest so we can get our “fix” and continue to grow as a result of his
unique combination of wit, wisdom, and warmth. The Maestro, the Master, the Mentor: The One Who Makes
a Difference is an offering that will be repeated to accommodate the crowds that recognize the value of Dr.
Tim’s perspective. You will leave a better teacher and a better person. W 2:30 Th 11:00 F 8:30
Charlotte Royal has held state and regional offices in Texas, including Presidency of Texas Bandmasters
Association. She continues to be among the most respected teachers at any level. With colleagues Erin Cole
and Sharon Kalisek, Charlotte discusses Developing Successful; Beginning Band Students. Ms. Royall understands this topic from the standpoint of the middle school teacher and from the perspective of the high school
teacher who needs to develop a viable feeder system. This is where it all begins. W8:30 Th11:00
Greg Snyder, Director of Bands at Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio presents his Symphonic
Winds in concert on Friday at 9:30 AM. With publication dates from 1921 to five selections published in 2006,
Greg and his forces will provide a varied program with a good deal of new music for us to learn about. The Lakota West High School Band has a record of high achievement under Mr. Snyder, who is a member of Amercian Bandmasters Association and is in his 19th year in the Lakota Schools. Lakota West High School is in
West Chester, Ohio, a northwest suburb or Cincinnati. The Lakota West Symphonic Winds perform at 9:30 AM
on Friday. Friday - 9:30 AM
Stanley R. Schoonover, Director of the Fairfax Wind Symphony offers a varied program as well. Founded in
1999, the Fairfax Wind symphony is an ensemble that was formed to benefit area music directors and teachers.
The principal aim of the ensemble is to allow teachers to learn new literature, rehearsal techniques, and procedures. One of the early successes of this band is that they have been selected to perform at five consecutive
meetings of the Virginia Music Educators Association. The band has hosted such dignitaries as Anthony
Maiello, Brian Bowman, Robert W. Smith, and Richard Crain. The band’s Principal Guest Conductor is Colonel
Arnald Gabriel.
Saturday - 8:15 AM
James South is director of Bands at Southwest Oklahoma State University. He is in demand as a trumpet
player as well as a conductor and clinician. In addition, James is the current President of Oklahoma Music
Educators Association and has recently served as Chair of the Faculty Senate at SWOSU. Dr. South presents a clinic entitled Band and Orchestra Tuning: Teaching an Ensemble Skill. This clinic has been presented at various state conventions and has been well-received and enthusiastically praised for its common sense perspective and the concentration on results that students can duplicate. This clinic is a must
for the growing director of any experience level. More important than the tricks you will learn will be the
attitude of excellence that Dr. South projects. Wednesday - 4:00 Thursday - 11:00 AM
Charles Menghini represents a constant for the Midwest Clinic. As the President and Director of Bands at
Vandercook, Dr. Menghini has his hand on the pulse of the clinic in a way that allows him to perform great
service to all of us. In addition to the traditional concert of the Vandercook Symphonic Band, Charlie is
presenting two clinics. They are The Efficient Band Rehearsal and College Student and Beginning
Teacher Track: The Successful Music Teacher: Turning Your Passion into a Profession. The Vandercook
School of Music is one of the founding institutions of the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. Dr. Menghini
continues to carry the standard of Vandercook and of his predecessors in a manner that makes us proud
and ensures the future of this important event.

Band Rehearsal... Thursday - 4:30 PM
Concert Friday - 12:30
The Dallas Wind Symphony is one of the premier concert bands in North America. Jerry Junkin is the
conductor of this fine band and is also the Director of Bands and Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Professor
of Music at the University of Texas. In 2003 he was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Hong
Kong Wind Philharmonia. The Dallas Wind Symphony’s program at Midwest 2006 includes a concert of
some of the great traditional pieces in the repertoire (Holst #1 and Lincolnshire) and a discussion of Symphony No. 3 Circus Maximus with composer John Corgliano. You can get a very nice preview of this
event on the DWS website link to Windnotes, their verbal exposition of the musical activities they undertake.
Concert - Thursday - 6:15 PM & 8:15
Discussion - Wednesday - 10:30 PM
Robert Jorgensen is Director of Bands at the University of Akron and Vice President of the American
Bandmasters Association. His career path includes service as Euphonium Soloist with the U.S. Army Field
Band and varied activities as guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and soloist. His work at Midwest 2006
is in the form of a clinic entitled Marches: Rehearsal Techniques and Performance Practices. Robert will
concentrate on information that is helpful to secondary school bands. His discussion includes editing for
optimum sound, the march sound, and the proper use of the percussion section. Thursday - 11:45 AM

Tim Reynish was the 2005 recipient of the Phi Beta Mu International Outstanding Contributor to Bands
Award. His presentation this year will give us even more of a conviction that his selection was a wise decision. Tim is among the most widely respected experts in our field and conducts bands all over the world. At
Midwest 2006, Tim will give us insight into the new band compositions that have resulted from an active commissioning tradition in Britain. The clinic is called The British are Coming: Exploring Musicianship through 25
years of New Literature for Middle and High Schools. We know Holst and Vaughan Williams, now we can
learn about our contemporaries across the pond who are writing for school bands. Tim’s contributions to
bands continue!!
Tuesday - 4:30 PM
Alfred Watkins is the Director of Bands at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia. In addition, he directs the
Cobb Wind Symphony, an adult community band in Cobb County/Metropolitan Atlanta. Mr. Watkins’ bands have
amassed an enviable record in Georgia and beyond. He brings his expertise to Midwest in the form of a clinic
entitled Inside and Outside: It’s All About Quality. This clinic is representative of the standards that allowed Alfred
and his colleagues to build a program of 350 from Alfred’s first day in 1982 with 78 students. With a raft of awards
for every aspect of his band program, Mr. Watkins is well qualified to speak to the importance of high standards on
the stage and the field.
Thursday - 4:30 PM
Anthony Gibson is the Director of Bands and the Director of Performing Arts for Allen, TX High School. Best
known for its large (and really fine) band, the school also boasts an orchestra that is performing on Thursday at
9:45 AM. Anthony is justifiably proud of his program, with 600 high school students in band and 200 in orchestra. A brief — and true — anecdote: As of this writing, Gibson’s band is still marching in support of a state finals football team. A recent playoff game was a direct conflict with his school’s hosting of All Region Band
Auditions. With 200+ Allen High students auditioning, Anthony could take only 285 students to the game. They
couldn’t march, but they played a great half-time concert.
Thursday - 9:45 AM
Mike Watts is only the fourth Director of Bands in the history of Permian High School (Odessa , TX). In the shoes
of J.R. McEntyre, Charles Nail, and International President Van Ragsdale, Mike continues the tradition. One of the
distinctions of the Permian Band has been the pride and dedication that students learn through the award-winning
band. The Permian Band is performing at 1 PM on Wednesday of Midwest 2006. Their program includes Mozart,
Saint Saens, and Berlioz as well as Reed, Ticheli, and Hazo. The Permian Band is one of the legendary programs
in Texas, setting high standards. Wednesday - 1:00 PM
Michael Burch-Pesses, Director of Bands at Pacific University, performs at Midwest 2006 as conductor of the
Oregon Symphonic Band. This is Oregon’s Premier Symphonic Band. Members share their love of great
band music and their willingness to participate in the band as volunteers. Their Midwest program includes
Bernstein’s humorous The Wrong Note Rag, the Finale to the Giannini Symphony, and a new James Barnes
piece still in manuscript. Michael is one of our newest members and a member of the very newest Phi Beta
Mu Chapter. Michael is a Charter Member of the Oregon Chapter. Professor Burch-Presses was featured
prominently in the last edition of the Phil Beta Mu International Newsletter. Friday - 6:00 PM
Writers are careful about using superlatives. A written rant or rave lasts a long time. But it is safe to say that
Paula Crider is one of the universally recognized master teachers in music education. She has directed awardwinning bands at the public school level and at a major university, The University of Texas. She is always a
pleasure to be around because her intelligence and wit is evident in every conversation or presentation. At
Midwest 2006, she is presenting a clinic that none could do better. She will use John Thomson’s well-respected
New Trier High School Symphonic Wind Ensemble as a laboratory ensemble in a High School Band Rehearsal
Lab. Hearing Paula talk about how and she does such wonderful things with a band will help all of us who can
attend. The room will be full. Arrive early!
Wednesday - 2:00
Susan Scarborough is in her twelfth year as Director of Bands at Doerre Intermediate School in Klein Independent School District in suburban Houston. Bands under Mrs. Scarborough's leadership have consistently
received Sweepstakes awards at the Texas UIL Contest, as well as being chosen Best in Class in several
competitions. The Doerre Intermediate School Band placed 2nd in the 2004 Texas Honor Band Competition.
She is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout Texas. This Midwest 2006 invitation is evidence of the
tremendous progress and the level of performance that the Doerre band has attained. They perform at 4:00
PM on Wednesday beginning with that beautiful old favorite Balladair by Erickson. (More of us should play
that.) They conclude with Sheldon’s The Phantom of Dark Hollow. Wednesday - 4:00 PM
Paula Thornton has taught for twenty-nine years in the state of Florida. Under Ms. Thornton’s direction, the
Buchholz High School Band was awarded the Sudler Flag of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation in 2003.
Ms. Thornton was the conductor for the Louisiana All-State Band in 2006, and of the Florida All-State Band in
2002. Ms. Thornton was elected to the American Bandmasters Association in 2004. She has received the Phi
Beta Mu Bandmaster of the Year, NBA Citation of Excellence, and the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Legion of
Honor Awards. She is presenting a clinic designed for high school participants. The clinic is entitled Why do
They Do That? Insights into the Mind of a Director. (Do we really want them to know what goes on in there?)
Wednesday - 2:30 PM

Sudler 2006
The University of Arkansas Marching Band received the 2006 Sudler
Trophy for Excellence. This award is presented annually to the collegiate
marching band “which has demonstrated the highest musical standards
and innovative marching routines and ideas, and which has made important contributions to the advancement of the performance standards of
college marching bands over a period of years.” Through the years, the
band has been directed by some of the best, including members of Phi
Beta Mu.
Past and present directors of the University of Arkansas Bands who are also Phi Beta Mu members are Eldon Janzen (Past International
President), W. Dale Warren, Chal Ragsdale, and Timothy Gunter (incoming member of the International Board). Congratulations to
each of them for the success and the honor which has come their way. Gentlemen, we are proud of you.
No International Election this Spring
But We Have a New Slate of Officers
Because of the paucity of nominations, it will not be necessary to put our newly developed online election
technology to the test. The total of nominations are exactly what our constitution prescribes, and there are
no problems with the number of Board Members from any particular state. So the officers who will be sworn
in on Friday of Midwest are as follows:
International V.P. & President Elect: Sheryl Bowhay
holds degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Calgary. Her bands won
numerous awards and recommendations. Sheryl
is active as a guest conductor and clinician. She
served on the board of directors of the Alberta
Band Association and as President in 1995-1996.
She is on the board of the Coalition for Music
Education in Canada.
International President: David Willson, Director of
Bands and Professor of Music at Ole Miss. David
has served a variety of roles in our fraternity. He
has been a member of the International Board and
was the very first PBM Vice President who is also
President/Elect. David’s jovial attitude at Midwest
may have something to do with his marching season ending at the normal time with no chance of a
bowl game.
International Board Member: Keith Bearden, Professor Emeritus, Texas Tech University.
Mr.
Bearden has been active in Phi
Beta Mu, including a term of service as President
of Alpha Chapter. He is in high demand as a
judge, clinician, and workshop presenter. Keith
has been diligent in chairing the Outstanding
Bandmaster Committee.
International Board Member: Timothy Gunter is
the Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas. In addition,
Mr. Gunter teaches music education, is the faculty sponsor for Tau Beta Sigma, and leads the
recruiting efforts for the Band Division. Unlike our
President-Elect, Tim is preparing for the Capital
One Bowl in Orlando on January 1.
International Board Member: David Pennington,
Director Emeritus of the Temple, TX High School Band
and the Temple ISD Fine Arts Department. David is
active as a judge and clinician, and also keeps his
skills honed at the bridge table. In 2003, David became a Bronze Life Master. He enjoys playing and
teaching duplicate bridge. David is a member of the
Texas Band Directors Hall of Fame.
International Board Member: Lois Wiggins is Band
Director at Edythe J. Hayes Middle School in Lexington KY. Lois received training from Austin Peay State
University, the University of Georgia, and Western
Kentucky University. She was selected as the Phi
Beta Mu Outstanding Young Band Director in Kentucky in 1992 and KMEA Middle School Teacher of
the Year in 2000.
International Board Member: Mike Parks, Music
Supervisor Orange County (Florida) Public Schools,
received his B.A. and Masters from the University of
Central Florida. Prior to his current duties, Mike
taught MS and HS Band in Orange County for 14
years. He is now in his 17th year as an administrator.
Mike is an active guest conductor, including the Florida All-State Band in 1995 & 2001.
International Board Member: Mike Townsend, Supervisor of Music & Director of Bands for Grande
Prairie School District. Mike is the director for the
Community Marching Band and has been the recipient of awards and honorary memberships as a result of his highly respected band program and his
work in the community.
Executive Secretary: Richard Crain, has served in
this position through the terms of many International Presidents and is an indispensable asset to
both International and Chapter Leadership. Richard
is in demand as conductor, teacher, clinician, adjudicator and consultant. In addition, he is a wonderful friend to all. Richard is also Vice President of the
Midwest Board.
International Editor: Alfred N. “Buzzy” Green is Director of Fine Arts for the Irving, TX Schools. Dr. Green
has conducted ensembles of all ages. He still does so
as guest conductor and clinician. Buzzy has degrees
in music education, composition, and conducting. He
has served on community arts boards as well as music education boards. He is currently working on a
curriculum that more nearly reaches every student.

Outstanding Contributor 2006
Harry Pinchin
Harry Pinchin has been associated with the Cosmopolitan Music Society since the early 1960's
when he became the conductor of what was then the Cosmopolitan Club Band. Many of his accomplishments involve the Cosmopolitan Music Society, which he directed from 1963 until his recent retirement from that post. His constant nurturing of that organization resulted in the evolution
of the program into one that provides opportunities for adults and students to learn and progress
as musicians. Under Harry’s direction, the bands of the Cosmopolitan Music Program went on to
win many awards and achieved recognition both in Canada and the United States. Many musicians who played with a CMS band in its early years have gone on to professional music careers
as teachers or players. While its goals and mandate have evolved over the years, the CMS continues to be an important part of the fabric of Edmonton’s diverse arts community. Some of Mr.
Pinchin’s awards and accomplishments include Principal Trumpet - Calgary Philharmonic & Edmonton Symphony, Trumpeter & Conductor - Tommy Banks Orchestra, Founder & Conductor of
the Edmonton Wind Ensemble, Director's Award & Honorary Life Membership - Canadian Band
Association, Alberta Government Award of Excellence, Alberta Band Association Director of the Year Award, and the City of
Edmonton Cultural Achievement Award.
Outstanding Bandmaster 2006
Don Wilcox
Don Wilcox retired as Director of Bands at West Virginia University in the summer of 2005 after a
34 year tenure of consistent quality, growth, and development. His time at West Virginia University saw the WVU Wind Symphony perform numerous special concerts for regional and national
conventions of the ABA, CBDNA, MENC, and WASBE. The premier wind band at WVU also undertook national tours for the first time in the history of the university. The WVU Mountaineer
Marching Band was the 1997 recipient of the Sudler Trophy, and during the summer of 2001, the
Centennial year of the WVU band program, the WVU Alumni Band toured Europe, performing
concerts in England, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. In 2005
they made their second European Tour with performances in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Slovak Republic, and concluding in Vienna, Austria.
Mr. Wilcox is Past President of the American Bandmasters Association and has served
extensively on the Board of Directors of both the ABA and the John Philip Sousa Foundation. He
has also received the Distinguished Service To Music Award from the National Council of Kappa
Kappa Psi. In a teaching and conducting career spanning forty-eight years, Mr. Wilcox has worked with musicians of all ages
and abilities. Mr. Wilcox continues to perform as clinician and guest conductor all over the world.

December, 2006
Dear Brothers and Sisters:
It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter, as it will be my last as International President. At the upcoming Midwest Clinic, a new slate of officers and board of directors will be sworn in for the next threeyear term. I wish to thank all of you for allowing me the distinct honor of serving you and Phi Beta Mu for
the past five and one-half years as president as well as the previous two and one-half years as vicepresident. My belief that public school band directors are the greatest people in the world has been confirmed over and over again!I especially wish to recognize and thank the following, as their work for The
Fraternity has been tireless:
David Willson (Delta: Mississippi) - current International Vice-President who will become International President for the next
three years. David has communicated with chapter presidents and secretaries and has been ready to fill in as president if
necessary. David will tell you that he is just a “country” band director. If that’s the case, we need more “country” band directors!
His wit has been refreshing.
Sheryl Bowhay (Mu Alpha: Alberta) - current International Board Member and Chair of the Outstanding Contributor Committee.
Sheryl will become the International Vice-President/President-Elect, reflecting the truly international scope of the Fraternity.
Since her election to the board three years ago, there has been no doubt in my mind that she would be the right person to eventually become president. And such Canadian charm!
Keith Bearden (Alpha: Texas) - current International Board Member and Chair of the Outstanding Bandmaster Committee.
Keith will return for another term on the board. His knowledge of and friendship with outstanding band directors throughout the
profession is amazing. He has been such a strong and positive influence on the board, I can’t imagine it without him.
David Pennington (Alpha: Texas) - current International Board Member and Chair of the Extension Committee. He will also
return for another term on the board. Second only to Dr. Milburn Carey, David has installed more Phi Beta Mu chapters than
anyone. He is constantly seeking members to charter new chapters.
Michael Parks (Omega: Florida) - current International Board Member and Chair of the Constitution Committee. Mike is relatively new to the board but has brought new insight to the proceedings. He will return for another term and I know will continue
to be a great asset.
Matthew Mailman (Beta: Oklahoma) - current International Board Member and Chair of the Public Relations Committee. Not
only has he effectively chaired the public relations committee, he has also been a fountain of knowledge in grammar as well as
music. Matt is retiring from the board this year. His presence and intelligence will be missed.
Tanya Bromley (Psi: Kentucky) - current International Board Member and Chair of the Project and Objective Committee. She
is so well organized, it is frightening. Tanya has taken her committee in new directions which will serve The Fraternity well for
the future. She is retiring from the board this year. Tanya also will be greatly missed.
Robert Eklund (Mu Alpha: Alberta) - current Phi Beta Mu webmaster. Without Bob, we would have no website. His technical
knowledge of this is amazing. I usually just shake my head in agreement and try to make him believe that I know what he’s
talking about. The main thing is, it works!
Alfred “Buzzy” Green (Alpha: Texas) - current Newsletter Editor. Buzzy is always ready to publish a newsletter. He just
needs material. His knowledge of bands and music astounds me. With his intellect, organization skills and writing ability, he is
the perfect person for this job – HE JUST NEEDS MATERIAL TO PUBLISH!
Richard Crain (Alpha: Texas) - our Executive Secretary for almost 30 years. What can I say about Richard? No one knows
Phi Beta Mu better than he. No one loves Phi Beta Mu more than he. No one works harder for Phi Beta Mu than he. Richard
is such a valuable resource and has been a great friend for so long. He is “Mr. Phi Beta Mu.”
Finally, I want to thank my family for giving up “family time” for me to take part in this venture. As band directors, we all know
the sacrifices that our families make for our careers. Too often I’ve forgotten to thank Jean, who I took home from college exactly 40 years ago this Christmas to meet my parents. And thanks to our daughter Vicki and son Jim for continuing to pursue
your own passion in teaching and helping others.
Happy Holidays to You All!
Van Ragsdale
International President

The Broken Arrow (Oklahoma) High School Band
waits at the Bands of America Grand Nationals.
Their wait was rewarded. They won the Grand
National Championship over marching bands
from all over the country. Broken Arrow Directors
are Scott Tomlinson (top) and Darrin Davis, members of Beta Chapter.
The Woodlands (Texas) High School Band had a
terrific year at the Bands of America Grand Nationals. They won their classification and were
fourth over all. Their director is Brett Johnson of
Alpha Chapter (Texas).
The Lassiter High School Band
(Marietta, GA) — Alfred Watkins,
Director — is one of nine high
school bands to have received
the Sudler Flag of Honor
(concert band) and the Sudler
Shield (marching band). Watkins presents a clinic on quality
