MISSION STATEMENT
Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we celebrate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by
Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as
we Continue Our Journey of Faith.
20th Sunday in Ordinary Time 2015-B
My brothers and sisters in the Lord!
Today in the Scriptures, we are reminded of the closeness of the union to which Jesus calls
us in every celebration of the Eucharist. It is a union which reaches its fulfillment in eternity, Jesus
is offering us a life that will not grow old but rather will go on forever. It is in the Eucharist that we
are offered the life Jesus shares with God the Father. Jesus is not present on our altars simply for
our adoration and admiration. He is present so that we can be united with Him perfectly. Our
celebration and reception of the Eucharist can be an empty pageant if it is confined for one hour in Church on a Sunday morning and
doesn’t flow into the rest of our lives. Unless we are very much part of what we are doing and have our hearts set on drawing closer
and becoming more like Christ, we can end up leading a pagan life tinged with certain Christian practices. Receiving the Eucharist is
without meaning and without profit if we fail to live what we celebrate. We must take our religion out of the Church with us and
bring it into our everyday experiences. An example would be that there is not much point in speaking about love without making an
effort to spread it.
At the conclusion of the Mass we are sent forth to serve the Lord where we live and work, as Christ-bearers living His life
and making Jesus present in a world that would otherwise hide Him. As we pray this Mass together today, we should thank God in a
special way for the great gift of His Son who is with us and leading us to God our Father. Every act, every word, every thought
placed on the altar of Jesus benefits our world. Without frequent return to the Bread of Life, we are unable to keep the Spirit of Jesus
alive in our hearts.
This week-end we welcome Fr. Francesco Donnarumma, a priest who will be serving here at Holy Family from August 13
through September 30, 2015. Fr. Francesco was ordained for the Archdiocese of Newark in 2005 and has just finished his
assignment in Puerto Rico. Following his assignment here, he will be travelling to Italy to visit his family. I know you will welcome
Fr. Francesco during his time with us.
This week-end we also welcome Fr. Raffaele who will be speaking at all Masses on behalf of the missions.
Peace,
Fr. Joe
This year I will celebrate my 25th Anniversary in the Priesthood. I am beginning to plan for this special milestone in
my life and would like to form a committee to help put this together. My actual date of Ordination was November 17,
however, I have chosen Sunday, November 15, beginning with the noon Mass and followed with a celebration in
Good Shepherd Academy. If you are interested in helping out, please call the rectory or e-mail me at
[email protected]. Thanks so much!
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
If the alb is the premier baptismal garment, then why are there so many other styles of vesture in evidence in our parishes? In
some places, altar servers and other ministers might wear a garment, usually black, called a cassock. Over that is normally worn a
white garment (a “surplice”), reminiscent of the alb but much shorter, often of starched linen and trimmed with lace. The cassock is
not a liturgical garment, but a clerical robe. Its origins lie in the religious habit of monks. By the late Middle Ages, diocesan priests
and clerics increasingly were encouraged to emulate religious priests. Very small boys were often apprenticed to monasteries,
especially for music education, and would be invested with a cassock and sometimes even inducted into the ranks of clerics.
For centuries before the Reformation, it was required that all men entering higher education be clerics, and so the cassock and
its variations became familiar academic garb. At the Reformation, many ministers retained a form of the cassock as ordinary dress,
rejecting liturgical garments. In the seventeenth century, the English Civil War was in part provoked by the Archbishop of
Canterbury’s insistence that ministers wear surplices. Although the Episcopal Church now retains “cassock and surplice” as the
normal dress for lay men and women assisting at liturgy, Catholics are increasingly attentive to the deeply traditional treasure of the
alb, our baptismal robe, when special liturgical vesture is needed.

MARIA SS. ADDOLORATA
OFFERING BLANKET
Several years ago, we introduced the
“Maria SS. Addolorata Offering Blanket” to
the Italian Festival. It has proven to be a
beautiful acknowledgment of our Sorrowful
Mother. A donation on the Offering Blanket
brings hope to the ill, is in memory of the
deceased, or is offered for a very special
intention. On the 2nd Friday of each month, a special Italian Mass in
honor of The Devotees of Maria Santissima Addolorata is offered for
their intentions at 7:00 P.M.
During the festival, the blanket will be on display in our Italian
Café for the entire 4 days. The presentation of the blanket will take
place on Saturday evening, during the candlelight procession
following the 7:00 PM Mass.
If you wish to take part in the Offering Blanket, you may submit
your donation to Holy Family Church along with the intention you
wish for the blanket. Kindly make your check payable to Holy Family
Church, but mark the envelope MEMORIAL BLANKET. As always,
the blanket will be a magnificent tribute to Our Lady of Sorrows. For
more information, please call Gina Tamburri at 973-751-4187.
