We at Spring Meadows are
looking for the complete
package cow. We want a balance of production and type,
and cows that will compete in
the show ring as well. Our
cows are currently housed in
a pack barn, and milked in a
parlor. They are fed a TMR,
with supplements in the parlor. Our herd has grown tre-
mendously in the past 5 years
with management and correct
sire selection, and purchasing
animals from some of the best
cow families that the Milking
Shorthorn breed has to offer.
Our purchases have fit the
type of cow that we want to
breed, and which help enhance our current herd. We
want to develop families and
breed from our purchases to
market animals under our
herd name.

the pleasure to develop her.
She has records to over
30,000lbs of milk, with several daughters that are milking, and more to calve this
summer. Her daughters are
milking like crazy, and we
have high hopes for them.

bought Kate as a sr. calf from
Nathan & Jody Nus. Kate has
done well in the show ring, as
well as the bulk tank. She
made over 20,000lbs as a 2
yr. Old, and has performed in
the show ring, too. Kate won
the National Futurity in 2008
and was 2nd in the Kingsmill
Futurity in 2009. We are hoping to flush Kate this year.
When we bought Kate we
also bought some Classic
embryos out of Faschings

Now to go back a few years when my parents were
young, and some of the first Milking Shorthorns that
they had who were influential were cows purchased
from Donald Guickian. Guickian’s Wink’s Josie and
Guickian’s Irene Rose were two of our favorites.

TWO YEAR OLDS?
Our 2 yr olds have not started calving out this year
yet. Last year we had an impressive group of 2 yr olds
which included a pair of Maxine’s Mike twins out of a
Gold Mine cow which are pretty fancy. We have a
Classic that we purchased from Brian Pederson as a
yearling heifer that we really like. We have a Hilltop
Academy we are helping develop with our friends,
Jason Robinson & Erica
Davis, that is pretty special.
She is turning quite a few
heads at the shows, she was
1st Jr. 2 at the 2009 Winter
National, and 1st Jr. 3 at the
Ohio Spring Dairy Expo and
Reserve Grand. She is due to
calve around Sept. 1 and will
be just right for Madison,
watch for her there!

couple Julius calves that we
really like. We like the
Megadeth calves that are on

variety of different breeding

Farms. There are so many
more, but I believe that these
have been the most influential

Jeffrey Rida, a breeder from Worthington, Mass., placed second in the

We have a 68 tie stall barn
with Holsteins, Brown Swiss,
and Milking Shorthorns. In
our herd we are breeding for
show type and high milk production, we have the time and facilities where we can care
for each cow a little differently to serve her specific needs. Cows are feed corn
silage in the afternoon with a milk cow grain mix three times a day. In the morning
we clean up the corn silage and feed them a grass alfalfa mix hay. My parents Craig
& Cindy and siblings Emily, Jacob, Rachel, Roxann, Annie, Christy, Nicholas, John,
Jack, and Joseph run the farm.

Cherrywood Milking Shorthorns began with my mom Cindy Achen and her brother
Jeff Clawson in Ackley, IA as 4-H projects. In 2002 my uncle sold the cattle and
gave our family 5 bred heifers to continue with the Cherrywood breeding. He gave me
Judea III bred to Royalty, she had a heifer calf Judea IV who became the brood cow of
my current herd. Jacob was given Molly III also bred to Royalty, she had a heifer
calf Molly IV which became Jacob’s foundation cow. Curt Krause and their family got
us more involved by allowing us to travel with them to shows and national conventions. Since then our family has continued to gain knowledge and meet many people
with the same passion for the great Red, White, and Roan.
This past year was very exciting for our family, we had a great year and
reached many of our goals. We exhibited Grand Champion of the Milking Shorthorn Junior Show with Cherrywood K Clay Judea V “VG 88”, 1st place in the Junior Three Year
Old Class, and the Kingsmill Farm II International Futurity winner. Then we went on
to the Winter National, our first time showing there since 2003, we were honored to
exhibit Grand Champion of the Junior and Open Show with Rovin IIr Oprah II Orchid “EX
90”

Red Ruben, I will use him if the family doesn’t have any Holstein breeding in the
immediate five past generations. I have seen several nice milking daughters and he
is settling well in our herd.

We have 5 Sparkler by Molly V (Hilltop Academy Daughter) embryos due March. From the

We have a Mericrest Outlaw daughter that freshened back in March. Cherrywood Outlaw Molly VI classified G+84 with a VG86 MS and was out on the show circuit this
season. Molly VI is averaging 60 pounds of milk a day and her record is 216D 13334M

I have made the majority of the breeding decisions. I talk with breeders at national convention and cattle shows to get their opinions. I also try to watch the
shows and walk the barns during shows to see more daughters.
IF YOU CROSSBREED, WHAT BREEDS ARE YOU USING AND WHICH SIRES ARE OF INTEREST
TO YOU?
We used some Red and White Holsteins to increase milk production and as an outcross.
Those daughters look great and we are just starting to breed them. We have also
started to incorporate some Illawara breeding, Red Ramma. I am very excited to see
how he will improve our herd.

Rauchs Awarded Distinguished Missouri Dairy Cattle Breeder Award
Mike and Bobbi Rauch of Sancrest Farms in Billings, MO were
presented with the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder Award by
the Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors Foundation. The Foundation
sponsors an awards program to recognize and honor Missourians
who have made noteworthy contributions to the progress and
welfare of the dairy industry.
The breeders award was first presented in 1978. It honors living,
active Missouri dairy cattle breeders who have attained state and
national recognition for achievements in breeding and developing
outstanding cattle.
Mike and Bobbi Rauch have contributed to the breeding of both
Jersey and Milking Shorthorn cattle. They are recognized for
making exceptional contributions to organizations within the dairy industry as well.
The foundation for Milking Shorthorns began in 1940 with the purchase of heifers by Rauch’s father
Glenn Rauch. Jerseys were added in the 1970s. Breeding objectives were sound functional types—
especially udder traits, feet and legs, longevity, and high production of milk fat and protein.
DHIA records record that the Sancrest Farms herd has consistently ranked among the top herds in Missouri, especially in production of protein and fat. Sancrest Farms has owned or bred at least 75 All
Americans and production class winners.
The Rauch’s bull, Ridgewood Orvals Promise, was an All America Winner five times and a four time
national champion. Sancrest Farms has supported the University of Missouri Research Center at Mt.
Vernon by donating cattle and providing semen for the breeding program.
Joined by son Phil Rauch, the Rauch’s current farming operations consist of raising heifers, beef cattle,
and hay production. Their milking cows are housed at Sho Me Jerseys in Billings.
Bobbi Rauch received a Bachelor of Science degree from Missouri State University. She was a teacher
for five years. Her forty years with Jersey and Milking Shorthorn cattle involved artificial insemination,
record keeping, advertising, and marketing.
Mike Rauch represents the Milking Shorthorn Society as trustee for the Missouri Dairy Hall of Honors
Foundation, serving as president for over eighteen years.
The Rauchs have three children, Phil Rauch, Melissa Dover, and Shannon Squibb. The Rauch progeny
live in the Billings area and are also active in the dairy industry.

Meet Your National Director…. Tim Crawley, Arkansas
Hello, my name is Tim Crawley. My family consists of
my wife, Nikki, daughters
Jessica (13) and Brittany (11)
and my parents Don and
Jewel. Together, we own and
operate Crawley’s Valley
View Farms, LLC in the extreme northwest corner of
Arkansas.
Our farming operation is
made up of a 320 cow dairy
and 15,000 layer hen enterprise. Cows are milked in a
double nine parabone parlor
and housed in a combination
freestall/bedded pack barn.
The herd is currently made up
of 75% Holstein and 25%
Milking Shorthorn and MS/
Holstein crosses in the genetic expansion program.
The milking herd is fed a
TMR consisting of purchased
grain and mostly home grown
forages. Forages grown on
450 owned and 215 rented
acres include red clover, rye,
wheat, rye grass, bermuda
grass and corn silage. Replacement heifers are raised
on pasture and hay supplemented with grain.
So how did we get to this
point? Dad and Grandad
were milking Jerseys in the
late 1940s, but in 1950 when
beef prices were relatively
high, they switched to Milking Shorthorns so they could
take advantage of the good
prices with their bull calves
and cull cows. With a strong
commitment to the Illawarra
influence, the herd eventually
gained national prominence
by setting breed milk production records and winning at
state and national shows. My
favorite cow of that era was a
Sunnyview Princess Reunion
daughter named Valley View
Jewel Anne. She was one of
the first cows to produce over
200,000 milk and 8000
pounds fat lifetime.
Change came in April 1988 when the milking herd was dispersed. Milking resumed in early 1989, but was again dispersed in 1990 when I became manager of Arkansas DHIA. I
traveled the next few years representing Tru-Test milk meters
in the US and Canadian milk recording circles. Back on the
farm, dairy replacements were marketed and excess hay was
sold.
Some say the whole hiatus from milking was to find a wife.
Although this was completely untrue, I did meet Nikki, a Columbus, OH native who was living in Tulsa, at the Thrifty Car
Rental counter in Green Bay, WI. That is a story for another
day.
I was elected to the Milking Shorthorn board in 2004 and will
finish my second term in July.
Extra Effort! Tim also served as president and executive committee member during his time on
the board...for that, we thank you Tim Crawley and family!!

Meet National Director, Rollie Johnson, Minnesota
Hello,
Here is my story, Rolland Johnson
I was born in Tyler and have lived on our home farm my
entire life, 68 years. Ruth and I were married in 1964 and
have 4 children Rita, Brad, Rod, and Ann, and 10 grandchildren. Our first great grandchild is expected early in June.
My first heifer was a Milking Shorthorn purchased as a FFA
project in1955. Since that time Milking Shorthorn has been
the only breed I have owned or bred. We DHIA tested and
recorded with the society for over 45 years. Our operation
has been to raise commercially profitable cows, milking up
to 100. We raised corn and alfalfa for feed as our primary
crops.
In the latest years we were in partnership with Rod and
Tammy for 8 years with the milking cows at their farm and I
raised the heifers. Our primary focus was to breed cows
with strength, longevity, and with correct functional
type. The kind that would suit a commercial dairy operation
and survive the severe Minnesota winter conditions.

These are exciting time for the American Milking Shorthorn Society in the number of young sires
being sampled.
Currently Select Sires has two bulls actively being sampled: 7MS347 GE Mysha-Wo Advent Liriano
and 7MS Mysha-Wo Robin Nitro-EXP. Liriano a 36000 is sired by the Holstein bull KHW Kite Advent Red out of the All American and Madison Champion Mysha Lady Di 2E92 who also has over
33,000 pounds of milk in her best record. . The early Liriano daughters are striking for being uniform; sharp shouldered, long bodied heifers that run uphill yet are balanced with adequate strength.
These are fancy heifers an it is almost assured that you will be seeing them in the show ring this summer (and maybe for many years to come). Nitro is an Innisfail Red Robin son of Mysha Othellos
Nutmeg E92 the All American Othello daughter of the All American Bar-D-Mi-San Acres McNugge
3E93. Nutmeg has records over 27,000 and McNugget to over 33,000 milk. No Nitro calves are on
the ground. Nitro has the distinction of being the first Milking Shorthorn sire in the US to have sexed
semen available.

Mine Frost Kourt, Taser is out of the 36000
Vinra Jordan Trina V89, the number one PPR
cow of the breed when Genetic Expansion is
included. Taser’s grandam is a Bar-D Cindy’s
Clay daughter of Vinra Schie Taffy with over
33,000 milk.
An Illawarra bull that Accelerated sampled a
couple of years ago, 14MS112 GE Panorama
Royal Trebel, has daughters milking in Australia, New Zealand and the US. The early proof
in Australia looks very promising for fat, protein and milk; in fact his proof converts to
+62f in the US! The Treble daughters remind
me a bit of Mericrest Outlaw daughters as twoyear olds, they appear to have a lot of udder
for their size. However, the udders have great
ligaments with firmly attached fore udders and
popping rear udders. They definitely know
how to milk and it will be interesting to see
how they develop.
Taurus continues their aggressive move into
Milking Shorthorns by currently sampling two
young sires. The first is 76MS440 Hard Core
Othello Snoopy ET. Sired by Othello, Snoopy is
out of the twice All American and Madison
Champion Innisfail BDC Stella 4E94. Their
other young sire is 76MS441 Spungold-R Prince
of PA-ET, a Innisfail Prince of Diamonds son of
World Champion Gold Mine Poppys OT Kay
2E95. Prince should have sexed semen available
shortly.
Semex is importing the bull GE Treeton Pringle
from Australia. Pringle is a son of the Adelaide
Royal Champion and International Dairy Week
Intermediate Champion Treeton Princess 978.
A previous Illawarra bull that Semex imported
also has daughters milking in three countries.
200MS8089 Clarefield Mocha daughters are
probably the widest rumped, strongest Illawarra
sired cattle we have seen in quite sometime. To
early to have an indication of how they are milking.
A bull that has been making impressive heifers
around the country is B-D-F Diamond Sparkler.
A son of Innisfail Prince of Diamonds from the
World Record fat producer Othellos Ruby Jewel
2E92, Sparkler is making very correct heifers,
wide over the rump with correct feet and legs.

sampling this promising young sire.
The first Kuszmar Mudslinger are fresh! Early
indications are promising…we will keep you
updated.

―Calmar‖ is a 2-year, post high school, campus
in Iowa. Marcia Floyd writes that ISU sent their
cows to Calmar’s new dairy facilities that opened
last year. They have a large display area where
they hope to feature memorabilia from each dairy
breed. This campus that offers a 2-year Dairy
Science degree also features a ―larger than life‖
painting of the dairy breeds, which in Marcia’s
discriminating taste is ―very good‖!
Located in northeast Iowa, she said that this is a
program where students can begin their studies
before transferring to ISU.
Thanks Marcia for providing the Milking Shorthorn items and memories to this new campus.
