MASTERCHEF CHALLENGE
MasterChef Challenge
On Tuesday 19th May students from our Year 8 elective MasterChef class competed in our annual
MasterChef Challenge. This year, students had the task of designing and making a dessert item for a
panel of judges. This year’s judges were our very own Principal, Mr Chad Bliss and Mr Aaron Wright,
Owner of Café Latte in Orange. Working in teams of two or three, students sifted, beat, whisked and
stirred some delicious creations. Our teams and there menu items are listed below:
Tayla Bargwana, Angel Hartigan and Praise Kudinha – Chocolate Self-saucing Pudding
Sachin Stephens and Chris Williams – Chocolate and Raspberry Wonton Stacks
Lily Morrison and Holly Tindall – Strawberry Sponge Cake
Ristin Jones (working solo) – Cheesecake topped with raspberries
Tamika Totten, Jennifer Farmer and Hayley Stedman – Malteser Chocolate Cake
Catherine Nicholson, Sally Beasley and Erin Naden – Sponge Cake with Strawberries and Cream.
After a strict judging process, there could only be one winner and Tamika Totten, Jennifer Farmer and
Hayley Stedman came up trumps with their absolutely delicious, rich and decadent Chocolate
Malteser Cake, with one judge saying “Great presentation. Taste, flavour and texture was beautiful!”
Catherine Nicholson, Sally Beasley and Erin Naden were awarded the runners up prize with their
beautifully presented strawberries and cream sponge. The judges were extremely impressed with the
fabulous desserts that our students had created and Mr Wright even said that the Chocolate Malteser
Cake would not look out of place in the display cabinet for sale at Café Latte!
A huge thank you to Mrs Judd for organising the challenge for our Year 8 students and to Mr Bliss and Mr
Wright for giving up their time to judge. Congratulations to all students involved!
Year 11 Food Technology have been working on Food Presentation in class over the past few weeks. As
a part of their practical lessons we made Chocolate boxes. Students had the use of sponge cake,
strawberry topping, whipped cream, melted chocolate and strawberries to come up with their own
unique designs. Students competed for a prize for 1st place. Megan Rogers won, followed closely by
Elizika Brain and Brooke Selmes. Congratulations girls and congratulations to the rest of the class who
participated. The Judges, Marion Rouse and Tammy Nash from the Home Economics Faculty were both
very impressed with the overall achievements of the students in one lesson, as was I.
From the
Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents and Members of our School Community
We are quickly heading towards the tail end of term 2 and continue to be exceptionally busy at our
school. Students in Years 7-10 have just completed their half yearly exams and I look forward to seeing
some wonderful results over the coming weeks. It is important that students learn from the feedback
they receive after this exam period and they take on board recommendations from the teaching staff
about ways to improve. If you have any questions regarding the progress of your child, please do not
hesitate to contact the school.
Formal School Assembly
Our formal assembly will be held on Thursday 11th June at 11am in the school hall. This term we will be
celebrating the success of our students who have made either Bronze, Silver or Gold medallion level as
well as our Students of the Term. All parents or caregivers of s tudents receiving awards have been sent
an invitation to attend the assembly. Any other interested family or community members are also
invited to attend.

School Uniform
With the cooler weather upon us, I remind all parents again of the need to have students wearing the
correct school uniform at all times including school jumpers. If parents are unable to provide the
necessary uniform for their child, please make an appointment to speak with myself or Ms Lindsay who
will arrange something for you.
Red Shield Appeal
This weekend will see the Salvation Army door knock houses in Orange to raise much needed funds as
part of the Red Shield Appeal. We have a number of our students supporting the school and helping
the Salvos with the appeal. Please consider making a donation if you have the opportunity.
ICE Presentation
On 28th May, the Rotary club of Calare ran a forum for all of our Year 10,11 and 12 students on the
dangers of the drug ICE. This insidious drug damages the lives of thousands of people every year and
the forum was designed to give our students an insight into the dangers and the effects.
Emergency services personnel spoke to our students as did a guest speaker Jackson Oppy who is the
general manager of the Ray Hader drug clinic in Melbourne and a former drug user. The message to
students was simple. Don’t even try it once. There was also a message from our Prime Minister on the
dangers of this drug. Thank you to the Rotary club of Calare for the organisation and the wonderful
forum.
Consequences – Year 12
Next Friday, 5th June Year 12 students will participate in a mock crash scenario hosted by the NSW
Police service. The scenario titled “Consequences” will focus on what can go wrong if students make
the wrong decision on the road. The event will be held at Orange High School and all Year 12 students
are expected to attend. Students will be driven to Orange High School by bus and will be supervised by
our school staff. If you do not wish for your child to attend this presentation, please contact me before
next Friday.
P&C Meeting
A reminder that the next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 3rd June beginning at 6.30pm in the
school admin building. All parents and community members are welcome to attend. If you require
further information, please contact the president of the P&C, Mrs Keryn Percival on
[email protected]
Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend
On Monday, 8th June the school will be closed due to the Queen’s birthday long weekend. School
resumes on Tuesday morning for all students.
I hope you have a wonderful fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in two weeks’ time.
With my warmest regards

PBL FOR UPCOMING WEEK 8
An Experience of a Lifetime
We awoke at 2am on the 25th of April to feel the crisp, cool air surrounding us and the excited, yet
sombre murmurs of our fellow tour students, teachers and directors. Everyone was aware that this
journey we were about to embark on, towards ANZAC Cove and Lone
Pine, would be one that would stay with every single one of us forever.
Wrapped up in our thick layers, we joined the thousands of Australians
and New Zealanders anticipating the emotional events to come
throughout the day. With an overwhelming sensation of connection and
empathy felt by all, the Dawn Service began: the playing of the Last
ANZAC Cove.
Post, the speeches from those such as Prince Charles, Tony Abbott and John Key, and
the laying of the wreaths, contributed to the already emotional atmosphere. At this moment, we
connected to the ANZACs in a way that could never be learned or expressed in a classroom.
Witnessing this experience has created a new, significant, emotional appreciation of the war and the
ANZACs.
Following the Dawn Service, we made our way up to Lone Pine, where the next service was to beheld.
Surrounded by our fellow Australians and New Zealanders, we completed the three kilometre journey
towards Lone Pine, our heavy backpacks immediately disregarded when we found our seats. The Lone
Pine Service was remarkable, leaving most, including myself, full of emotions
and emptied of tears. All individuals connected in a way that portrayed
and honoured the ANZACs and the Gallipoli war campaign. Witnessing
Andrew lay the wreath at Lone Pine on behalf of the tour group and New
South Wales, was, and still is, a very proud and inspiring moment for our
Canobolas team. Both the Dawn and Lone Pine Service provided everyone
with an emotional, touching consciousness that will forever be remembered
and honoured. During the trip we visited locations significant to the ANZAC
Gallipoli Campaign; some include Shrapnel Gully, the Battle ground of
The Team at the Turkish Martyr's
Krithia, Chunuk Bair, The Nek and more. Each place provided new, varying
Memorial.
emotions. Cape Helles, the Turkish Martyr’s Memorial and the Kabatepe War
Museum, important locations relevant to the World War One campaign, were also visited. All these
locations: battle grounds, memorials, cemeteries alike, contributed to the understanding, honour and
commemoration of the ANZAC and the Turkish soldiers, the Gallipoli campaign, and World War One.
Whilst in Canakkale and Istanbul, the tour group was able to visit a variety of interesting places: Troy: the
home of the Trojan Horse, Ayasofya: an incredibly impacting museum - formally a Greek Orthodox
Church turned Mosque, the Spice Markets: rich with cultural diversity, and the Blue Mosque: one of most
astonishingly beautiful places I have ever had the chance to lay my eyes on, as well as the scenic,
engrossing geographical landscapes. Turkey proved to be an incredible place full of wonderful
individuals and exquisite sites.
This journey will be one that I will never forget; one that I will never match. The bonds made, the
experiences shared, the sites visited and the witnessing of the centenary commemoration are just a few
of the things that have forever changed me and how I view, honour and commemorate the ANZACs. I
could not have wished a better group of people to be by my side as we took this journey together,
thank you, Rebecca Steedman, Andrew Gray, Jacinta Percival and Ms Kirsten Hutchinson, for
heightening this incredible experience. Thank you to Mr Bliss and the school, the tour directors and
organisers, and the New South Wales Government for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Alissa Meagher
ART NEWS
I would like to congratulate our students on winning their sections in Orange Waste to Art Competition
and Exhibition with the Owls, Jayden’s Jewellery and the Year 7 Guardians of B Block.

STEM PROJECT
STEM
Last week, a team of teachers travelled to Sydney to work for two days with Department of Education
advisers on developing a Stage 4 STEM unit of learning for state-wide distribution. Mrs Nealon, Mr
Siddiqui, Mr Scott and Ms Bertolin make up our development team.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and A
STEM unit of learning focuses on designing, investigating and
producing something to solve a real world problem. Students integrate
their science and maths learning and apply it to a real world context.
The school is currently planning for all students in years
7 and 8 to participate in a STEM project next year.
Stage 5 AcTal STEM Project
Next Tuesday afternoon, 2nd June, at 4.30pm, our Stage 5 AcTal class will be
presenting their STEM portfolios and solutions to parents and carers. Students have
been working on redesigning and making a mousetrap powered car that goes either
faster or further than one from a packaged kit they made earlier. Other interested
parents and students are welcome to attend.
WELFARE WORDS
Yr. 7 Study skills and Resilience Day – Orange Scout Camp – 18th May
On Monday 18th May Yr. 7 completed their first Study skills and resilience day as part of the wellbeing
program at TCRTHS. The day consisted of 4 sessions and each session was run by our very talented Peer
Support leaders. Session 1 – Developing a homework chart and goal setting, session 2- Organisation and
Note Taking, Session 3 – Study habits, preparing for exams and tips for overcoming exam anxiety and
session 4 – Building Resilience. I would like to take this opportunity to publically thank peer support
leaders, Rebecca Steedman, Natasha Spicer, Jessica Whan, Racheal Heywood, Nabelia Smithers and
Jesse Kelly. Thanks again and congratulations on the fantastic effort. I know our
year 7 students really appreciated your efforts. I would also like to thank Ms. Lord
(Yr.7 Adviser), Mrs Rose and Mr Tucknott for your
excellent support on the day. So well done to all. Below
are some photos taken on the day.
Students were provided with all notes/handouts from
each session to take home and to remind them about
what they did on the day. We also had lots of
chocolate, biscuits and a BBQ lunch to keep us fuelled and ready to go.
Yr. 8 is scheduled to do a similar program on the 9th June and permission notes have gone out for this
excursion…the deadline for them to be returned to the office is Friday 5th June. So I would encourage
parents/caregivers to keep a close eye out for those notes and return to the office by that date, so your
child/ward doesn’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity.
If you would like any further information about the
program…please don’t hesitate to contact me at the
school.
Thanks

♫ MUSIC NOTES ♫
Concert Brilliance
Our choirs, led by Ms Samantha Bartholomeusz from Orange Regional Conservatorium (ORC), were
invited to perform in the annual ORC School Spec concert. The concert featured local school
ensembles under the direction of ORC tutors.
Our ViiVox and VocE choirs combined to perform three entertaining
songs to the packed audience in the
Orange
Regional
Conservatorium’s
auditorium on Wednesday night.
The choir performed “Walk a Mile in My
Shoes” in four vocal parts, they then amused the audience with “What a Weird
Bird, the Frog Is” in a tricky four-part round, and they concluded with a stunning
performance of “The Popular Song.”
Miss Aldrick and Sam Bartholomeusz both extend huge congratulations to our performers who are from
Years 7-11. It was a wonderful performance with such a good sound.
Congratulations to:

keyboards and V-Drums and listening and analysing music of different styles.
The 7/8 AcTal class have transferred their skills playing keyboard with all ten fingers
– to using their feet on the new Floor Keyboard.
ORC Annual Choral Gala
This Saturday 30th May the conservatorium holds its annual choral gala featuring all
the ORC choirs. With performers ranging in age from 4 to 90, there will be a wide range of entertaining
songs performed by the many choirs. The choirs combine to perform John Rutter’s “Gloria” to conclude
the concert, accompanied by many ORC staff and students on piano, brass and percussion.

Year 11 Design and Technology
Currently Year 11 D&T are working on a individual design project, creating a USB powered lamp. Last
week we loaded into the school bus and headed out to the
Resource Recovery Centre to source items that can be repurposed into a lamp. While doing so, Year 11 are learning
about the sustainability three R’s: Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose.
LEAP Project – EV3 Lego Robots from Macquarie University.
Macquarie University’s LEAP project continues this term at
Canobolas. This project is aimed
at assisting students in rural areas
develop skills in problem solving, programming and computational thinking
– real 21st Century learning skills.
Year 10 D&T have finished making their Lego EV3 robots and have begun a
series of coding challenges, first with the motors, then the ultrasonic sensor (it
will work like a Roomba robot vacuum!) and a colour sensor.
Year 9 and 10 Woodshow Challenge
Congratulations to our Year 10 Woodshow challenge team of Mitch Hicks,
Dylan Pulbrook, Rob Payne and Adam Berryman. They finished in first place
at the regional Woodshow Challenge heat at Kinross two weeks ago. This
now qualifies them to compete at the state final at the Sydney Timber and
Working with Wood Show on Saturday 13th June. We are in the process of
organising
a
school bus to
head down for the day, more details from
the IA staff.

Table Tennis @ CRTHS
On Tuesday 19th May CRTHS hosted the Western School Sports Association and Combined High School
Table Tennis Knockout Gala Day. In addition to our 2 Canobolas Teams we had teams from far and
wide in attendance including Yeoval, Trundle and Tullamore. The hall was set as if for table tennis
professionals and the day consisted of 5 rounds. Our 2 Canobolas teams shone through in round 3,
However they didn’t quite make it into the finals for the day.
The overall winners for the day were Trundle, and I would like to congratulate
and thank the students involved for their sportsmanship on the day, and their
hard work and help setting up the hall before the event and afterwards. I
would also like to give a huge thanks to Steve Tobin from the Orange Table
Tennis Association for his assistance on the day and allowing us to borrow
their equipment. Overall a great day representing Canobolas!
Congratulations to Miss Sealey for hosting and organising such a successful
regional event here at Canobolas!
University Shield – Opens Rugby League
On Thursday 21st, the Opens Rugby League team travelled to Bathurst to take
on Kelso High. Having had the bye in the first round, the players were very keen
to impress in this second round fixture. It was perfect playing conditions at Morse
Park and the boys looked very dangerous with the ball in hand. Joey Mateo
was particularly damaging, his combination with 5/8 Brodie Christopherson
gained easy meters throughout the game.
The
Canobolas
boys
worked
exceptionally well as a team in defence,
only allowing the Bathurst team to cross
the line twice. A darting run followed by a
very
skillful
grubber
by
Brodie
Christopherson led to the try of the match
for Epa Navale. Cecil Payne and Will
Parsons were also very strong in their
respective positions. The match finished 24
-10, a very impressive score considering
the Canobolas boys couldn’t convert any
of their tries. They blamed the kicking tee!
Next match will be against Bathurst High in
the coming weeks.
Interschool Soccer Competition
Round 2 vs Orange High School
The Open Boys and Girls soccer teams versed Orange High in Round 2 of the Interschool Soccer
Competition last week.
On Monday 11th May the Open Boys faced an experienced
Orange High side. Our boys played well, with some tidy passing
and good positioning. However, we outplayed by the attacking
Orange side. Well done to Andrew Gray for scoring his 2 goals
but unfortunately this wasn’t enough to beat the Orange Boys
who took out the match 6-2. Congratulations to our Players
player Andrew Gray.
On Thursday 15th May the Open Girls faced a very strong
Orange High side. Canobolas came out strongly and played
some very competitive soccer and in an evenly matched game
in the first half. The girls showed huge improvement as a team
from their previous match. Unfortunately we lost to Orange High.
The girls are to be congratulated on their efforts throughout the match. Well done to our Players Player
Maddie Gogala.
Round 3 vs Orange Christian School
On Thursday 21st the Open Girls played Orange Christian School in Round 3 of the Interschool soccer
competition. We had a few new players who joined our team. Our experienced girls helped to blend
the new girls in the team and had some outstanding on-field
communication and encouragement. Maddie Gogala got
Canobolas on the board with a sensational goal from outside
the goal box. Orange Christian School levelled up the score
just after the first half. However, it was our newbie Bec Turner
who scored our second goal, thus winning the match 2-1!
Well done to all girls and to our Players Player Bec Turner.
A big thanks goes to all parents, friends and family who have
been coming to support both teams each week.
We look forward to our next game for the Boys against
Orange Christian School and our final Round 4 matches
against Kinross in the next few weeks.
U15 BOYS ORANGE REP HOCKEY
Four students from Years 8 and 9 at Canobolas Rural Technology High were selected as part of the
under 15 Orange Representative Hockey Team. The boys played Orange at
the U15s State Championships in Grafton last weekend,
competing in Division 2.
The boys went through the rounds defeating East
Sydney, North West Sydney, Parkes and Newcastle, with only
two goals scored against them. In the semi-final they
defeated Goulburn 2-0. In the final, they came across
a tough Grafton team going down in the final 6-0.
Whilst all the goals were scored in the first half, the boys
put up a valiant defence in the scoreless second half.
They finished runners up, a fantastic result for the team
playing for the first time in division 2 Last year the team
won division three.
All four boys played extremely well with Kyle
Walker & Hugh Farley in defence and the attacking
strikers Luke Rosewarn & Trent Wilde scoring a
number of goals.
Country Cup League Tag Report
On Tuesday 26th May the Open’s Girls League Tag team travelled to Bathurst to compete in the NRL
Country Cup against James Sheahan, Blayney High, Kelso High and Bathurst High.
It was a cold and frosty start with the girls taking a while to warm up. League Tag was a new experience
for the majority of the girls. It took some time for them to understand positions and the concept of the
game. Unfortunately the girls faced an experienced and skilled James Sheahan team in their first game,
although once they got the hang of it, they proved to be a challenge and kept the score tight. James
Sheehan scored early in the first half taking the score to 4-0. In the second half the girls defence was
outstanding keeping them scoreless. This held the final score at 4-0.
In the second game the girls played Blayney High. The Canobolas girls were looking much more
comfortable going into this game. They started to communicate and work together as a team. In the
first half Canobolas were first to score with Kyiesha Dixon crossing the line, after some great passing
through the hands. This took the half time score to 4-0. In the second half Erin Naden, the little legend,
used her speed to burst through the line and beat the fullback, taking the score to 8-0. The girls started
to fatigue and let Blayney high score in the final minute, finishing with a final score of 8-4 in favour of
Canobolas.
In the third game the girls were up against Kelso High. The girls began to have fun and try new things on
the field. They attempted moves and were happy to put kicks in during plays. Kalika Fuller saw the
space on the right side and made a smart decision to put a short kick through, for Brianne Wise to
regather and score. This took the half time score to 4-0. Erin Naden again showed her speed and agility,
after catching a high ball that was kicked to her in fullback. She managed to step through and run
60metres down the field to score. The defence from the girls was exceptional this game, with lots of loud
and clear talking, keeping Kelso scoreless at 8-0.
The girls fourth and final game was up against Bathurst High. At this stage the girls were very tired. They
started slowly and let two quick tries in for Bathurst High. The score at half time was 12-0. In the second
half Bathurst High was still powering and scored again taking the score to 16-0. However, the girls didn’t
give up and stayed positive. Nailani Lang managed to pick up a loose ball and step her way through
the defence to score. Emily Melnik showed her kicking skills and successfully converted the try taking the
score to 16-6. Time was ticking by and getting the better of the girls. In the final minute Nailani Lang, the
play maker, fooled the defence with a dummy and broke through the line, where she was backed up
by Sammie Kudrins who scored. This took the score to 16-10, unfortunately in favour of Bathurst High.
Thanks to Nathan Neuenhaus and Will Christopherson for running the water and assisting the girls on and
off the field. Congratulations to all the students who attended Country Cup. You all displayed excellent
behaviour, attitude and sportsmanship throughout the day.
