Welcome to the Scrap365 magazine UKS 2012 Sponsor Blog Hop class! This class has been designed by regular DT member Riikka Kovasin. You can find more of her beautiful work on her blog: paperiliitin.blogspot.co.uk Artwork by Riikka Kovasin Riikka is sharing two techniques with you: the gorgeous scribbled background and the watercolour effect you see on the panel behind the photo. These techniques are a little bit messy and fantastic fun! There really is no right or wrong way to do them, so anyone can have a go. We hope you’ll play along and enjoy getting inky fingers! TECHNIQUE 1: Scribble, Splash and Splat! This one’s literally child’s play! Here Riikka shows you how she made the background cardstock on her layout using a really easy resist technique. Raid your kid’s art supplies for some ordinary wax crayons and you are ready to go! Any waterbased medium will work over the crayon so if you don’t have watercolour paints you can also try Distress Inks or ink sprays diluted with water to make a colour wash. You’ll need these supplies: White cardstock Ranger Dylusions Ink Spray – Lemon Zest (or other ink spray of your choice) Watercolour paints Crayons (oil or wax based) Paintbrush 1 Scribble some random forms and circles onto cardstock with crayons (make sure the crayons are oil-based so they aren’t watersoluble). Try to find your inner child! You can use either just one colour or a few different ones. 2 Paint over the scribbles with watercolours. Use a relatively moist brush and mix different shades together. Leave some of the white card showing. The crayon scribbles resist the watercolour giving a lovely two-tone effect. 3 Splash some paint on top of the page. Gather some colour to the brush and then flick it over the paper. Repeat, if you want more splashes. 4 Finish the background with some ink spray. Spray some of the media in your hand (wear rubber gloves if you don’t want your hands to look like mine!) and then flick it across the background. TECHNIQUE 2: Watercolour Whoosh Notice the beautiful swirly panel behind the photo in Riikka’s layout? These steps show you how to recreate this background. If you don’t have the Distress Stain you can still do this technique just with the watercolours but you will get a slightly different end result. As before if you don’t have watercolour paints, try diluted Distress Inks or spray inks – have a play with the supplies you have and see what happens. You’ll need these supplies: Pearlescent paper Watercolour paints Ranger Distress Stain – Picket Fence 1 Apply some Picket Fence Stain directly onto a craft sheet. 2 Add some watercolour paints here and there around the Picket Fence Stains. 3 Spray some water on top. 4 Pull a piece of pearlescent paper through the colours. 5 Let dry or dry with a heat gun and repeat, applying colour until you achieve a look you are happy with. 6 Here’s the finished piece – I used mine as a photo mat on this layout.
