TARRAFAL
The tour starts at 09:00, departure from the
hotel. The first stop is São Domingos, mainly
known for its traditional handcraft centre.
From there we drive to São Jorge dos Órgãos,
at 400 m height, where we walk though the
National Botanical Garden and have a look at
some endemic species of the archipelago.
From there we can also see the highest point
of the island, Pico de Antónia, 1394m. We
continue towards Assomada (once Santa
Catarina), the second biggest city of Santiago
where we find the Tabanka Museum and a
lively street market, Wednesdays and
Saturdays. The next stop will be at the ex
political prison, and actual Museum
Renascença of Tarrafal. To “digest” the
impressions so far there is time before lunch
for a short walk through the small village of
Tarrafal and its beach with palms. Time for
lunch at Tarrafal. The way back to Praia is done
along the coast with stop at Porto Formoso,
Calheta de São Miguel and Pedra Badejo.
There is also time for a photographic stop at
the Valley of 1000 Palms in Santa Cruz.
We arrive at the hotel around 17:30-18:00.

The excursion starts with a short half an
hour tip to Cidade Velha (once Ribeira
Grande), first capital of Cape Verde. Here
we walk through the village, visiting the
fortress of São Filipe, the Pelourinho, the
Sé Catedral, the Church of Nossa Senhor
do Rosário and the convent of São
Francisco. Afterwards we drive towards
Plateau to have a look at its main
attractions:
Cidade Velha which has been inscribed
on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Praça
Alexandre de Albuquerque, surrounded
by old buildings, exemplifying the old
colonial architecture style, like for instance
the Palácio da Justiça, the curch of Nossa
Senhora from 1900, the Municipality, the
Culture Palace Ildo Lobo, the market and
the miradouro.

RIBEIRA DA BARCA

WATERFALL
description
Starting at the village of
Ribeira da Barca, hiking into
the main Ribeira, we go in an
easterly direction. Following
the main dirt road till it ends,
and then follow the main path
that veers to the left and is
adjacent to the dense area of
mango and coconut trees.
You will soon see the
spectacular waterfall,
cascading off the high rocks
onto the lush area below. The
flow of water reaches its peak
near the end of the rainy
season (Early November), but
there is usually a flow all the
year long. Here you can take a
wonderful shower! On the
return trip pay attention on
the women and children
working in the ribeira,
sifting sand and placing
various sized rocks in the
appropriate piles. This a way of
life for many of the local
residents.

SERRA MALAGUETA

A very scenic hike, especially during the
greener period of the year, late AugustDecember. Arriving in the Vila da Serra,
commonly known as Serra Malagueta,
from Assomada, starting from a path
right across the street from the second
small grocer one sees on the left (the
owners name is Marcilino). The initially
steep path will take you straight down at
first, and then cut sharply to the left. The
path will then lead you along the left
side of this big Ribeira Principal, giving
the traveller gorgeous views of the
terraced land and the small villas below.
When the path splits we take the trail
leading to the right, which leads down to
the bottom of the Ribeira in an oasislike area. Mango, banana and coconut
trees share the area with sugarcane,
which is used to make grogue in the local
distilleries. Following the ribeira down,
will take you to an area where you can
catch a vehicle going back to the starting
point.

One of the most popular hikes in Santa
Catarina, mainly due to the “big tree” that
exists at the end of this moderate walk.
Poilão da Boa Entrada is the largest and
most spectacular tree in Cape Verde,
estimated to be about 800 years old, and
having a trunk wider than many of the
houses in the area.
Starting from Assomada, walk along the
main road in direction to Tarrafal. You will
enter the neighbourhood Known as Nhagar,
passing by an area that has a bakery and tall
buildings lining each side of the street. After
passing Bar Holanda on the right, we
descend towards Ribeira da Boa Entrada.
The road will switchback as you pass
through several communities; to the right
will be the lush ribeira, on the left you can
see the sheer walls of rock that marks the
edge of Nhagar. Upon reaching the bottom
of the ribeira, stay to the left on the dirt
road. The tree will be off to the right, taking
up most of the hillside.
