PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to the “new” MGA. I say that only half-jokingly because
of course we are entering our 115th year of serving golf in the
Metropolitan Area. But in reality when you logged in, logged on or
visited us at Golf Central this past spring you may have had the
feeling of—“Where am I?” Such were the nature of the sweeping
changes that the MGA made in 2011 as we build a leaner, cleaner and
more modern approach to serving golf in the 21st century.
One of the first and most visible changes we launched in 2011, as part of an overall
re-branding project, was a new MGA logo. It was the first major revision to our logo in decades,
and we love our sleek new design. Even larger in scope was the complete transformation of our
website, mgagolf.org. Our new site is more appealing, dynamic and interactive, and has truly
become the focal point for golf in the Metropolitan Area. Look for even more exciting features
to be added to this site in 2012.
While there are numerous changes to the website, at the top
of my favorites list was the launching of our mobile apps for
Android, iPhone and iPad devices. Posting scores, checking
handicaps, reading The Met Golfer, or catching up on all the
MGA news is now literally at your fingertips, 24/7. All of these
changes have been well-received and in addition to making all
of our operations more efficient and effective, we love that we
have more ways to connect to our members than ever before.
The bulk of the work for all of these new projects fell to our
Communications department, led by Jeanne McCooey, and I
commend them all for helping us to build a new MGA.
“WHILE
OUR FOCUS
THIS YEAR WAS ON
THE NEW, WE NEVER
LOSE SIGHT OF OUR
LONG - ESTABLISHED
CORE PROGRAMS .”
There were many changes in cyberspace, but the biggest change for the MGA was in bricks
and mortar office space. Though the MGA expansion project was conceived and well underway
during my predecessor Al Small’s administration, it was in 2011 that we officially opened the
doors on a long-awaited headquarters addition at Golf Central. The new building, which was
seamlessly annexed to the existing Golf Central, now houses the entire MGA staff, along with
special areas recognizing some of our most esteemed supporters. In June we held an “Open
House” where we christened The Paul Dillon Portrait Gallery; the 1897 Club, which recognizes
some of our most generous and active leaders; the Zahringer Champions Gallery; the Holzschuh
Library; and a beautiful outside area, The Treiber Garden. Vacating our old space had the added
benefit of giving other resident golf associations at Golf Central some much-needed growing
space, and all renovations are now happily completed. We hope to add some tenants to Golf
Central in the coming months, but we encourage anyone who has not had the chance to visit
the new headquarters to please contact us or just stop by—there’s always something going on
at Golf Central.
While our focus this year has been on the new, we never lose sight of the importance of our
long-established core programs—championships, handicapping, course rating and growing the
game through our charitable Foundation. These are the cornerstones of the MGA and
always have our full attention. In spite of the best efforts of Mother Nature to put a damper on

things, we had one of the most exciting and inspiring championship seasons
ever. Tommy McDonagh’s grueling playoff victory at The Ike at Somerset
Hills, Tyler Hall’s emotional win at the Met Open at Sleepy Hollow, and
Mike Miller’s record-setting Met Amateur performance at Piping Rock are
just a few of the season’s highlights. I was fortunate to walk the final
match with the 19-year-old Miller as he stormed from 2 down to a 3&1
victory over Sam Bernstein with one of the most incredible stretches of
golf I have ever seen. It was a great win and a great season for Mike, and
I am so pleased to see this fine young man come out on top in our Player
of the Year standings.
I congratulate all of our champions, with a special nod to our victorious
Carey Cup Team and Captain Al Small. I know how much they wanted this
win—the MGA’s first since 1996, and to do it against such a powerful
Irish team that included Walker Cup star Alan Dunbar, and at such a spectacular place like Bethpage Black, was all the more thrilling. I was there
for the win and I hope I am able to see another team victory next October
against the Ligue de Paris. Special kudos to
Tournament Director Brian Mahoney and

challenging summers on record. They are real

pros and proved it many times over in 2011.
“T
MOST EXCITING
On the subject of Bethpage, what could
be more fitting than to award the MGA’s
highest honor, the Distinguished Service
CHAMPIONSHIP
Award, to the man who made Bethpage a
SEASONS EVER
household name and one of the most respected public facilities in
the country. Under Dave Catalano’s watch, Bethpage has hosted
numerous state and local championships, in addition to two U.S. Opens. In an era where we
are so focused on opening up the game and making it more accessible, we are pleased to
recognize how much Dave has done to make golf a game for everyone to enjoy. My sincerest
congratulations to Dave on this well-deserved honor.
AND INSPIRING
.”
Bringing the virtues of the game to more golfers is also the focus of the MGA Foundation,
which also had a very exciting and productive year. Our GOLFWORKS program experienced
record growth with 240 young people working at 78 member clubs; our Caddie Academies
drew more than 500 youngsters; and educational programs like our Presidents Council and
Green Chairmen seminars were some of the most successful and informative programs ever.
These events provide a great service to club leaders and strengthen the bond between the MGA
and its member clubs.
Without a doubt the highlight of the season for the Foundation, and for me personally, was
the celebration of the First Tee of Metropolitan New York’s 10th Anniversary. This remarkable
collaboration between the MGA Foundation and Met PGA in executing the vision of the late
Lew Rudin is one of the truly great success stories in golf. In just ten short years, The First Tee
of Met NY has grown from one location at Mosholu Golf Course in the Bronx to six Met Area
facilities and more than a dozen affiliate sites, making it one of the largest and most active
youth development programs in the Met Area. The anniversary was celebrated at a gala dinner
for more than 500 people at the Museum of Natural History in October. It was a spectacular
event with Dan Hicks serving as MC, and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former President

Bill Clinton among the distinguished guest speakers paying tribute to
the great work done by The First Tee. The evening also honored the
Rudin family for their continued commitment to the vision of Lew
Rudin, along with the Wilf and Ryan families, both of whom are
Trustees of The First Tee. The First Tee spirit continues to grow and is
truly the future of the game.
One of the real perks as President of the MGA has been the
opportunity to work with a dedicated group of Executive Committee
and Foundation Board members whose time and expertise are invaluable
in creating the road map for this Association. It has also been a pleasure
to work so closely with our entire core of dedicated volunteers and
an incredibly talented MGA staff. They are the real lifeblood of the
Association and make the MGA one of the most respected golf
organizations in the country. At a recent open house at Golf Central
our staff had the opportunity to introduce themselves, and as we went
around the room I was struck by the fact that of the 21 full-time staff
members, at least half of them had been with the Association 10 years
or more. I think that says a great deal about the quality of the MGA
as a whole, and even more about the leadership provided under
our Executive Director Jay Mottola. A special thanks to Jay for his
extraordinary guidance on the Golf Central expansion project. I know
he is happiest of all that it is now behind us.
I look at 2011 as a year of great achievement, and I have been
proud to serve as President during such an exciting time. The work
done to move the Association forward into the next decade has been
a great affirmation of the MGA’s commitment to building a future for
the game that is as vibrant and relevant as its past.
I look forward to serving you in 2012.

MGA VOLUNTEERS
A DEDICATED CORPS of more than 350
volunteers and committeemen are the
lifeblood of the MGA. They support the
MGA in all core services and enable tremendous outreach opportunities for both the
Association and the game of golf. Their
contributions include serving on various
committees, including Course Rating, Rules,
Editorial, and Insurance, and their role at
tournaments enables our championships
to continually break new ground. MGA
volunteers log long hours and hundreds of
miles on behalf of the game, and we greatly
appreciate their service. For information on
how you can volunteer, click here, and
check our website soon for a completely
revamped volunteer homepage.

MGA VOLUNTEERS
CORE SERVICES
The MGA’s mission is to serve our member
clubs. We accomplish this through a wide
variety of core services, including conducting tournaments and giving back to the
game through a charitable Foundation. For
our member clubs, the issuing of USGA
Handicap Indexes, reaching our members
through our magazine and an arsenal of
digital mechanisms, as well as course rating
services play a vital role in how we serve golf
in the Met Area. Our Play Days tournaments
were once again a success as 8 MGA member
clubs hosted over 620 golfers in 2011…just
another example of one of the many ways
we make sure that our membership is able
to enjoy the game to its full potential.

The Mission of the MGA Foundation is to
set the groundwork for the future of golf by
bringing the values and traditions of the
game to a new generation of golfers
through innovative programs aimed at
underprivileged youth and junior golfers.
Since its founding in 1991, MGA Foundation
programs have impacted thousands of
young people through GOLFWORKS, The
First Tee of Metropolitan New York, Caddie
Academies, junior competitions as well as
educational programs for clubs.

The First Tee of Metropolitan New York (TFTMNY) celebrated
its tenth anniversary in 2011 and had much to celebrate.
THE FIRST TEE
OF
METR OPOLITAN NE W YORK
Founded in 2001 by the MGA Foundation and Met PGA,
TFTMNY has grown from one location at Mosholu in the
Bronx to six Met Area facilities and fourteen affiliate sites. It
is now one of the nation’s largest and most active chapters and one of the area’s
leading youth development programs, impacting thousands of young people
through golf. Some of this year’s highlights include:
• A gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York celebrating the
tenth anniversary of TFTMNY’s founding. It was a star-studded evening, as
Dan Hicks of NBC Sports served as Master of Ceremonies for a program that
included New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and 42nd President of the
United States Bill Clinton.
• Brittany Georgalas was named co-recipient of The First Tee’s 2011 RBS
Achiever of the Year.
• Paul Spano was presented with the first-ever First Tee Outstanding Participant Award.
• Connecticut native and PGA Tour star J.J. Henry returned home to Fairfield,
Conn., to host the annual J.J. Henry Invitational.

GOLFWORKS
Now in its 18th year, the MGA Foundation’s GOLFWORKS student intern program
opens doors and provides exposure to the
game for young people in the Metropolitan
Area. Through an innovative structure,
GOLFWORKS connects high school-age
students from across the tri-state area with
MGA member clubs seeking to employ
interns. The students work in every facet of
club operation, from the pro shop to the
grounds staff to the administrative office.

CADDIE ACADEMIES
The MGA’s Educational programs also create opportunities
for Met Area juniors, primarily through our Caddie Academies.
These half-day training programs are conducted by local
caddie masters, golf professionals, and MGA staff, who
introduce the basics of caddying to young people.
MGA/METLIFE
YOUTH CLINICS
MetLife has been a partner of the MGA for more than
30 years and has a long history of community service and
supporting MGA Foundation junior golf initiatives. Once
again, the MGA Foundation and MetLife teamed up to
introduce young people to the game of golf and the life
lessons it can teach by hosting three MGA/MetLife
Youth Clinics.
The series teed off at the LPGA’s Sybase Match Play
Championship at Hamilton Farm Golf Club in Gladstone,
N.J., and featured more than 100 junior golfers from The
First Tee of Metropolitan New York’s Plainfield West
and Weequahic Park sites, The First Tee of Raritan
Valley and LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Scranton-Pocono
and Greater Newark.
In July, the USGA Golf House in Far Hills, N.J. hosted 60
participants representing New Jersey-based First Tee
programs at Plainfield West, Weequahic Park, and Raritan
Valley. All enjoyed a day of
golf history with a guided tour
of the USGA Museum, Arnold
Palmer Center, and the
equipment testing center.
The final clinic of 2011
took place at Sleepy Hollow
Country Club where a group
of 60 enthusiastic junior golfers enjoyed a day of instruction
and games.

...BECAUSE
GOLF
GROWS HERE
The MGA Foundation, as a
501(c)3 organization, relies on
contributions in order to continue
our important work and fund
many of our initiatives. The MGA
would like to thank the many
members of the golf community
and our member clubs who have
given so generously to ensure
that “Golf Grows Here” in the
Met Area.
CLICK TO DONATE
The opening of our new headquarters
addition in 2011 also provided us with
opportunities to honor a select group of
supporters in our new 1897 Club and in
special “named” areas throughout the
building. Additional naming opportunities
are available at Golf Central. Anyone
interested in participating at this level,
please contact the MGA Foundation.

EDUCATION
The MGA hosts educational seminars throughout
the year that keep club leaders informed on the
latest industry trends, issues and innovations.
These lively, interactive sessions are aimed at
increasing awareness while
simultaneously helping optimize
MGA member clubs’ capacity
for success and growth.
These programs, which range
from Handicapping and Rules
Seminars, The Green Chairmen
Seminar, Public Golf Forums and
the
Presidents
Council,
are
chaired by MGA staff and volunteers and highlighted
by the presence of golf industry leaders. This
year’s speakers included David Normoyle, the
former curator of the USGA Museum; Rick Coyne,
CEO & President of Club Mark Corporation; and
USGA Agronomist Adam Moeller, to name a few.

MGA CHA MPIONSHIP S:
CHALLENGES MET
IT’S A SEASON LIKE THIS that reminds us how blessed
we are in the Met Area. When faced with challenging
weather conditions of historic proportions, we are
reminded that our mission to conduct the finest championships in golf takes many to accomplish. The MGA’s
tournament program has grown to more than 70 events,
and from June through August the MGA conducted
roughly 50 days of competition. Given that only two of
these days were on weekends and there are only 65
weekdays in those three months, you get an idea of the
intensity of the tournament season.
Hurricanes and tropical storms wreaked havoc on our
communities and added length to our season. From the
end of August through October, it took 17 days to
complete 7 events (not including the eventual postponement of the inaugural Masters Tournament). I want
to personally thank our talented tournament team—
