6 & 7 JULY 2013
Bodmin Riding 2013
Bodmin Riding Committee wish to thank all our friends, supporters and
sponsors for their help this year, the list is too long to print out in this
programme, but you know who you are.
Bodmin Riding is a celebration unique to the town. Featuring in parts some
of the town’s history and some myths surrounding the beast which is
chased by the Helliers, a posse of young men dedicated to pursuing and
capturing the Beast. Throughout the morning they can be seen chasing
the Beast through the town. Once captured the Beast is put on trial by the
Ragadaziow in a specially devised Mummers Play focusing on Bodmins’
cultural and historical past.
Children from local schools will be in procession along with the bands
dancing to the Bodmin Riding music down Fore Street and onto Mount
Folly where they will be judged by the Mayor and his Consort.
In the Shire House there will be a Craft Fair. During the day you will be able
to hear the Town Criers from across the region competing against each
other. Later in the afternoon there will be Cornish Wrestling in the Priory
Park organised by the Cornish Wrestling Association.
There will be roving entertainment throughout the day along Fore Street and
on the Folly from many bands and performers and a beastly ball at the Shire
House Suite in the evening. Further activities in the park include a Future
Heritage Stage for young performers, DJ’s, stage managers etc, we will also
have other entertainment for your enjoyment.
The Riding Day procession on Sunday is a commemoration of St Petroc
which starts at St Marys Church passing down through the town carrying
the saints bones onto the Folly and then into the Priory for a short service
before the main service in St Petrocs Church then onto St Thomas’s chapel
followed by the distribution of Riding Ale. On Saturday for those who like to
browse, Fore Street will be traffic free, shops will be open and trade stalls in
the street.
Journey back in time and take a ride on the Bodmin & Wenford steam
railway who will be running their usual timetable. Fingers crossed for some
good weather over the weekend, so come along into the town and enjoy
yourselves.
Colin R Bell.

The name of Cornwall's County Town, Bodmin, means `Abode of the
Monks' and at the time of the Domesday Book, it was the only town in
Cornwall to have a market. We know that in 1469 that there were many
Guilds in the Town-Guilds were made up of people who worked in a
specific trade. All the drapers were associated together into one guild or
community, and all the corn merchants into a second, and all the
bootmakers into a third, and so on.
Each guild had its own guildhall, its own patron saint, and its own chaplain.
Some had their own Altar in the Parish Church of Saint Petroc.
It was the guilds which came forward, when the old Church, which stood
on the site of the present parish church, of which only the tower, and the
font are now left, was falling into ruin. They said: 'We cannot let our
Parish Church fall into decay - here is the money needed - build it up
again' and the present church is basically what they rebuilt! It is truly the
Parish Church of the people of Bodmin.
The tradespeople were religious folk, they were all church people and on
Riding Day they all came to thank God for their trade and celebrate their
patron saints. Riding Ale was then
distributed around the homes of the
town.
In recent times Bodmin has revived
the age-old celebration - the Riding
Service now takes place on the first
Sunday morning in July when the
patron saints and people of the
Guilds are remembered with
thanksgiving.
This is followed by Riding Ale being
served in the ruins of Saint Thomas'
Chapel and the Rectory Garden.

The Bodmin Play continued...
The Ragadaziow lament the death of the Beast;
Do not weep for the beast who lies bleeding in chains;
he hears not your words and he knows not your pains.
We will cut off his brush and we'll peg out his hide
and we'll plant us a furse bush to show where he died.
Beyond the wide reaches of Halgavor Mire,
he led us a chase 'til the best of us tired.
He led us a chase for six hours at full cry,
but now like the evening sun he must die.
(From an old folksong)
But the Beast of Bodmin has life in him yet;
Blewake coynt ha hager yw;
[hairy and strange and ugly it is]
Bucka noos;
[spirit of the night]
Ny won pane veast ylla boos;
[I don't know what sort of beast it
is]
(from 'Creacion of the World' by William Jordan, 1611)
St Petroc saves the day;
In comes I your Patron Saint
My bones is in that box
I hope you will remember that
This whole town is Saint Petroc's
I seen this Dragon in its Pit
out on Halgavor Mire
With God's good help, I'll calm it down
and soon put out its fire
Good folk of Bodmin let's hear the shout
Of 'Kernow bys Vyken!' go ringing out.

An Gwary Bosvenna
The Bodmin Play
Ragadaziow Jantacle
As performed annually by the Ragadaziow (worthies of the Borough).
An Gwary Bosvenna (The Bodmin Play) is performed at various public
houses and other locations throughout Riding Day. After much tireless
pusuit (and testing of Riding Ale) the final Trial of the Beast is held at
Mount Folly at 4pm.
The play is a whistle-stop romp through the entirety of Cornish History in
just 15 minutes. Drawing on traditional Cornish mummers plays, ancient
manuscripts, folklore, gossip and TV celebrity culture the play is a subversive celebration of the independant and rebellious Cornish spirit.
Justice Jan Tregeagle arraigns the Beast of Bodmin;
Beast!
You are charged with Beastly Behaviour,
You are Wild and Rude, Unkempt and Uncivilised,
Your Rampaging has spread Clamour and Alarm,
You have Disturbed the Peace,
And Frightened the Children.
You are a Deviation from the Acceptable
You are, Sirrah, an Affront to Decency!
How do you plead?
Your dumb insolence shouts your guilt!
The Ragadaziow sympathise;
Hogen, dysk an musur, Kernow, dysk godhevel!
But learn the beat of the dance, Cornwall, learn to suffer!
(From 'the Prophecies of Merlin', 13th Century)
Are the Cornish going to put up with it?
We the Cornish men, whereof certain of us understand no English,
utterly refuse this new English!
(From 'Articles of the Cornish Rebels', Castle Canyke, 1549)
