The current regulations stipulate a reduction in the
diameter of the air restrictor by 1 mm to 38 millimetres
to limit the speed slightly of the top vehicles starting

with a tricky task, but we found a good solution,”

compensate for the limitations imposed by the regulations. I’d be surprised if we are slower than last year in

Volkswagen Motorsport History
Attractive one-make cups in touring car racing
Volkswagen played a formative role in the touring car
scene for a period extending over three decades. The
first one-make-cup the Scirocco Cup was initiated in
1976 and, with Manfred Winkelhock, even produced
a future Formula 1 driver. The Golf Cup and Polo
Cup followed from which numerous talents made the
break into higher profile championships.
Volkswagen has been particularly innovative in the
support of young talent for ten years: The ADAC
Volkswagen Polo Cup and its predecessor the Lupo
Cup offer motorsport newcomers the greatest performance parity at reasonable cost. The centrally
prepared cars which are constantly swapped between
competitors makes this possible. Volkswagen’s onemake cups enjoy increasing popularity in other countries like, for example, China, Denmark, Japan, South
Africa and England.
Volkswagen also has an enviable list of success in
long-distance touring car racing. The 24-hour race at
the Nürburgring, in which the brand finished second
in 1997 with a Gold TDI, is the base on which the
involvement was built and later continued with the
