Business of the Month - Tulpen Cellars
Veteran Vineyard Managers and Winemakers Ken Hart
and Rick Trumbull have taken their combined 50+ years
of agriculture and partnered together to bring you their
limited production wines. Tulpen Cellars (tulpen is tulip in
Dutch) has been in business since 2005.
Tulpen wines are made from sustainably farmed, hand selected grapes grown in the most sought after vineyards in
Membership Luncheon the Walla Walla and Columbia Valleys. Only the finest
blocks of fruit from each vineyard are used to create

these incredibly beautiful and complex wines. Despite
their rather high alcohol levels, Tulpen wines are aromatically complex, supple and immediately delicious. Much of

the blending is done during fermentation, which gives
them more time to meld together before being released,

Besides being the winemaker for Tulpen cellars, Ken Hart is the General Manager of Appellation Management Group. AMG develops and manages vineyards within the Walla Walla Valley.
He has also planted other vineyards in the valley such as Seven Hills, Nicholas Cole and Ash
Hollow. Ken’s farming interests are now focused on the vineyard development of non-irrigated
lands in the area of Mill Creek. His first dry land project was a vineyard named Yellow Bird.
Rick Trumbull is a sustainable vineyard/orchard consultant for most all of the serious grape and
apple farmers in the Walla Walla Valley. He grew up in the valley and farmed with his parents
in apples for years before becoming a chemical consultant for a local company. His experiences
with the farmers and the different crops over the years, showed him the importance of developing a more sustainable method of farming. Rick’s interests became more focused on the microbiology and its’ importance to the health of the soil and he soon began brewing the valley’s
first Compost Tea. Sustainable Soil Solutions, his family operated business, was born and services the majority of the valley’s major grape and apple farmers with Vermi-Compost Tea, and
many other products that aide in the balancing of the soil.
Over the years, Tulpen Cellars has been featured in several newspapers, magazine blogs and
online articles. For more information about their wines, visit tulpencellars.com.
Congratulations Tulpen Cellars for receiving the Business of the Month Award for January!

Message from the Chamber’s Past President
Well it’s been a fun-filled and exciting year as President of the Milton-Freewater Area
Chamber of Commerce for 2013 and I’m truly glad that I had the opportunity to work with
such a vivacious, vocal and generous group of people as the staff, the board and the members. We started the year with a long list of wants, and through the hard work of the board
and staff, we’ve accomplished much of what we started out to do; increased our membership by15%, updated our member benefits and included member radio advertising for anniversaries and special events, selected and activated a new logo for the Chamber, improved
the quality of the monthly newsletter, increased newsletter circulation, improved the Chamber website and incorporated the new logo and color scheme, added activities to the annual
MFCCF festival to include a Beer Garden and a Kids Corner with Izzy the Camel, games and
petting zoo and added a quarterly General Membership Breakfast meeting to accommodate
the members who can’t make the luncheons. It’s quite a list but there is always more to be
done ‘to be the best we can be’ for our members and I’m confident that the MiltonFreewater Area Chamber of Commerce will continue to grow and improve to better serve
our members and our community. It’s been a great pleasure working with you all and I’m
extremely grateful that I will have at least one more year as part of this wonderful organization.
Here’s wishing you all the very best for 2014. ‘ta-rah’ for now!
Julie Culjak, President, 2013.
Message from the Incoming Chamber President for 2014
I am honored and thankful to be allowed to step in as the Milton-Freewater Chamber of
Commerce President for 2014. I appreciate the confidence that my fellow board members
and the Chamber staff have shown me and trust with the backing of a strong and diversified
board that we will have a very successful year ahead. My vision is to continue involving more
of our Valley’s “Community Partners” in our endeavors to encourage a strong member base
and an economically sound Chamber, thereby allowing this Community and the Chamber to
prosperous and flourish in the future. I appreciate the dedication of our outgoing board
members: Sam Tucker, Merri Anne Huber, Michelle Thacker and Steve Irving; you will be
missed, but with new members: Paul Jensen, Clive Kaiser and Melanie Hall, I am sure we will
persevere admirably. I look forward to meeting more of our fine members at the general
membership meetings and other gatherings throughout this year and look forward to hearing from anyone with concerns or ideas on how we as “YOUR” Chamber of Commerce,
can be of more assistance to this wonderful city. HERE….Community Comes First!!!
Vicki Lee, Chamber President, 2014
To the outgoing Board members:
Sam Tucker, Merri Anne Huber, Steve Irving & Michelle Thacker
We appreciate everything that you did for the Chamber and
everything you do for our community! Thank You!!!

Ambassador News
The Milton-Freewater Chamber Ambassadors would like to thank all that helped make our Christmas Magic Parade a
success – it was cold but it was enjoyed by all those in attendance! Special thank you to each of you that participated –
either by watching or having an entry in the parade. Thank you to the police department for keeping our parade
safe! Ladies that made cookies – they were so yummy! Santa & his elves took time out of their busy schedule to lead
our parade of 20 entries and Santa handed out candy canes provided by the City to children as they sat on his lap.
Thank you to the Ambassadors that prepared the hot drinks and served cookies as they were greatly appreciated in
the cold weather. We really appreciated Valley Christian Center for allowing us to use their church to prepare our
drinks and for allowing us to plug in our tree for the month of December. Thank you to the City of Milton-Freewater
for decorating our community with beautiful decorations and for decorating the tree provided by Milton-Freewater
Downtown Alliance. It was a great evening and look forward to seeing you all again on December 5th, 2014!
Happy New Year to All!!!
MF Humane Society Closes its Doors
Lyla Lampson, President of the Milton-Freewater Humane Society, is deeply disappointed in having to close the doors
after 13 years of being in business. The Humane Society was committed to rescuing & neutering stray cats and finding
them good adoptable homes. After struggling for several years to get a low-cost spay neuter clinic operational in Milton-Freewater it comes with great sadness that the group will no longer be able to help stray animals in our area.
While the MF Humane Society is reducing their operations, the group is still committed to continuing the care of the
animals already in the sanctuary. Those animals still need to be fed, cleaned up after and are still looking for forever
homes, they still need the community’s help. If you would like to donate food, kitty litter, funds or adopt a cat, please
contact Lyla Lampson at 541-938-4711. Lyla states that even though they are not taking in any more cats, they expect
to receive a grant in February to help spay and neuter stray and feral cats one last time.
As of December 24, 2013, Nine Lives changed ownership and re-opened under a new name. Details to follow!

The Ford Family Foundation Pathway’s Program has chosen Milton-Freewater to
participate in a community survey. If you or somebody you know is interested in the direction of our community, please take a few minutes to fill out the following survey no later
than January 15th, https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CommunityVitalityInventory2013.
There is a drop down menu at the beginning to choose Milton-Freewater as the community.
The results will be summarized and there will be a community forum to discuss the results
on Thursday, February 6th in the Community Building at 5:30pm.
