CURRICULUM
ENHANCEMENT WEEK
11th
—
15th
JULY
2016
Principal’s Introduction
Dear Parent/Carer
I am delighted that 2016 will mark Reepham’s sixteenth Curriculum Enhancement Week.
The last fifteen have all proved to be highly successful and very popular with the pupils.
Each has added an additional dimension to the school’s curriculum; each has strengthened
the special bond that exists between the pupils and the staff of the school.
Obviously Curriculum Enhancement Week involves a tremendous amount of effort. It is
made possible because of the collective effort of the school staff who give so freely of their
time in order to offer the children something different and special.
Planning a week’s event is no small task and accepting the responsibility for taking children
on hazardous activities is no small matter. For those who take children abroad, or on
residential courses, the demands are particularly onerous.
The fact that this year’s event is the sixteenth does not make it any easier. You will
probably be aware of the ever-increasing levels of paperwork that have to be completed if
children are to be taken off-site. Please, support us by completing fully the information
requested regarding your child's health, how we can contact you etc., etc. All this
will help us provide a safe environment for your child and is necessary for the smooth
running of the week. If you have concerns, please contact Mrs Douglas who is co-ordinating
the week.
Finally, I must point out that despite everything we will do, we cannot absolutely guarantee
your child's safety. Curriculum Enhancement Week, as life itself, involves an element of
risk. Please consider this when you help your child select his/her preferences and stress
that he/she, as well as the activity leaders, has health and safety responsibilities. Be aware
that all students are covered by the Reepham High School & College insurance policy.
Pupils are reminded that they have responsibility for their personal possessions.
This having been said, we will do our best to provide a safe environment in which your child
may have a great deal of fun. I hope you find plenty in this year’s choice to excite you!
Sponsored Walk
The Sponsored Walk this year has raised £7285 so far with extra coming in from gift aid.
This is a great achievement. Once again a significant part of it will be used to support
Curriculum Enhancement Week.
There will be free and subsidised activities supported by the sponsored walk money to
allow all students to be able to join in the week’s fun. Some of the money will be used to
refresh the First Aid qualification of members of staff, as this means that we can continue to
fulfil the national safety requirements for the more adventurous activities.
We hope the week will be a huge success as in previous years. It provides another
dimension to school life and I am grateful to everyone for the effort that is making it
possible.
Mark Farrar
Principal
Curriculum Enhancement Week Organisation
Welcome to the Curriculum Enhancement Week booklet for 2016. For the week from the 11th July the
normal school timetable will be suspended. Pupils and staff will spend this week pursuing one of the
many activities detailed in this booklet. Those pupils who participated in last year’s events will have
enjoyed a wide range of experiences that a normal school timetable cannot offer. This year we are
offering a large number of events and a wide variety of high quality activities and it is especially
important to read the booklet. I must add that it is not always possible to allocate every pupil’s first
choice activity, so choose three other activities that you feel you would also enjoy.
Please consider your choices carefully and complete the necessary forms accurately.
Student’s Personal and Medical Details
The regulations and laws that apply to the organisation and planning of school visits can make even a
short local visit subject to rigorous checks and forward planning. As a result we have decided to include
in this booklet a form that will cover most of the information that we will need to plan ahead for our
activities. The only exception may be additional information needed for those activities planning
overnight stays, where further individual details may be requested and a parental meeting concerning
the visit will be organised.
Activity Choice/Option Form
All the forms should be handed in to me in the office in the library personally. Do not rely upon
other people to do this for you. Do not give the form to your tutor or hand in at the office. This is
important because each form is individually numbered as it is handed in to me. To ensure fairness to all
pupils, all activities oversubscribed on the first day will be included in a draw, after this all
activities will fill on a first come first served basis. Pupils who did the activity last year or the
year before will be excluded unless places do not fill. To ensure impartiality the draw will be made by
the Principal. Please fill in all four choices in order of preference and return your form early. Make sure
that you use the correct activity name and that Parents or Carers sign the form.
Activities will not be allocated if the Student Details Form is not filled in correctly.
Attendance
Curriculum Enhancement Week is an important part of your child’s education at this school and
full attendance is expected and required. Reasons for non-attendance will be required as usual.
Every absence must be supported by a parental explanation note which will be “authorised” if the
reason is acceptable, i.e., illness, medical appointment, emergency, religious observance or business
that could not take place at any other time (e.g. music examination).
Payment for Activities
In line with the Charging Policy, no pupil will be allowed to participate in an activity unless full
payment has been made before the activity commences.
All costs are approximate and depend upon the final numbers of pupils taking part in each activity. The
Governors have decided once again to use a significant part of the Sponsored Walk money to subsidise
a number of activities in order to ensure that everyone has an element of choice. We offer a range of
low cost or free activities that should satisfy those unable or unwilling to pay a larger amount. Years 10,
11,12 and 13 are to be given a sum of money proportional to that raised by them to be spent upon an
event of their year group’s choice, for example the school prom. If there are insufficient contributions to
an activity it may have to be cancelled. Once your son or daughter has received confirmation of their
place on an activity (given in a letter via their tutor group), you will be asked to pay for the activity or pay
the first instalment. Alternatively, payment for these trips can be made online. Please follow the link on
our website or go to www.scopay.com/reephamhigh. The name of the trip will be the activities name.
The first instalment will act as a non-refundable deposit. Having chosen your activity you will be
able to, where necessary, pay in 3 instalments, 7th—18th March, 11th—22nd April and 9th—20th
May. All monies must be paid by the 20th May 2016.
If you have any problems please keep us informed and we will do our very best to help.

Film Making
Do you have an interest in the film industry? Ever fancied becoming an
actor, director or editor? Then this is the perfect opportunity for you.
Come and join the Film Making team; learn about how the film industry
works and create your own short film. First up, is a trip to the Harry
Potter Studio Tour in London. Here, you will be able to tour the props,
costumes and sets which were used throughout the Harry Potter films.
You will also have the unique opportunity to explore two soundstages
and a backlot filled with original sets, animatronic creatures and
breathtaking special effects. You will then attend a workshop, where you
will learn how a film is transformed from script to screen. The next day,
you will be visiting BBC Voices in the Forum, Norwich. Here, you will
learn how to create effective scenes in your film through the use of
different camera shots/angles.
For the rest of the week, you will have
access to the Media suite in Reepham
College, where you will star in, shoot and
edit your own short film. On the last day,
we will hold an exclusive film festival where
all of the produced films will be shown.
There will of course be a prize for the best,
most creative production!

Horse Riding
This activity offers a fantastic opportunity for pupils who have always
wanted to learn to ride but have never had the chance to do so, or for
pupils with experience who want to further their skills.
This activity will take place on a daily basis at Squirrelwood Equestrian
Centre, Weybourne 10am—4pm. The stables are situated between Holt
and Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast. We shall provide the
transport for the five days to and from the yard and students will need to
be collected from school at 4.30pm each day.
During the five days pupils will be able to participate in a range of
different activities. The pupils will have a high standard of riding tuition,
information on general horse care and how to prepare ponies for shows
and, depending on riding ability, hacks in beautiful locations across
heathland with sea views. There will also be gymkhana games and for
the more experienced riders there will be the opportunity to show jump.
This will be a wonderful way to spend the last week of the summer term!

We ‘DIG’ Archaeology
Join in a really special opportunity to excavate archaeological test pits in
Reepham churchyard.
As part of the ‘Three Churches in One
Churchyard’ project, archaeologists have already been working to locate
Hackford Church, which once stood proudly next to Whitwell and
Reepham churches before the Great Fire of Reepham in 1543. The
archaeologists think they know where Hackford Church is but the
question is, can we prove it? Pupils from Reepham have been invited
to dig in the churchyard to find the church. This is a very rare
opportunity because excavation in churchyards is normally not allowed.
So for three days we will be exploring the location of Hackford Church
and digging test pits to prove its exact position. On day 4 we will be
heading off to the British Museum in London to look at some of the
famous archaeological discoveries from East Anglia and around the
world. We will be participating in a handling session when we will be
able to touch and hold
ancient artefacts that can
usually only be observed
behind glass. On day 5 we
will jump in the minibus and
visit some well known and
famous archaeological sites
in East Anglia to discover
where some of the artefacts
that we see at the British
Museum were actually found.

Project Wild Thing
If you love wildlife and being outdoors, then you should join this activity!
You will spend the week learning about wildlife in the local area. You will
learn identification and tracking skills for different animals. You will also
get to handle wild birds which we will capture, ring and release in our
school grounds. We may also have a falconer join us for a day so you
can see birds of prey up close and in action.
We will use different techniques to capture and identify mini-beasts
using field guides and apps. The ecologist, author and ex Reepham
High School pupil Patrick Barkham will be joining us to look at butterflies
in our wildflower meadow.
As part of the activity, we will spend one day at Pensthorpe Wildlife and
Gardens. Here, we will take part in pond dipping activities and we will
feed members of their collection of wild and captive birds. We will also
learn about their conservation work
and will meet one of their barn
owls. Accompanying us will be a
professional wildlife photographer
who will teach you how to take
amazing photographs of wildlife on
your phone or camera.
You will be taught how to start your
own nature blog, what sort of things
they should include and how to get
them noticed. Mrs Hookway will be
writing about this activity on her
nature blog, so you may even be featured in an issue of BBC Wildlife
Magazine. You can see what we got up to last year here:

Fishing
We are very lucky to spend our time fishing at Reepham Fishery again
this year. It does not matter if you are a complete beginner or
experienced angler, a boy or a girl, this fishery suits everyone. For the
beginners we will have staff available to show you how to set up your
rod and get catching straight away. It would help if you have your own
tackle but it is not essential as the fishery staff are able to provide some
(please request in advance). For the experienced angler there is the
challenge to target your species or catch a personal best. In previous
years we have caught Carp up to 13lbs, Tench up to 3lbs, Roach, Rudd
and Orfe. There is never a quiet moment around the lake!
We will have three days to practise our skills and gain expert advice
from the Fishery staff, they will then organise a fishing match for us.
Our final morning will include prizes and trophies for the match winners,
biggest fish caught over the week and most improved angler.
A Junior Trout and Course Rod Fishing Licence will be required.
These are currently £5 and can be purchased from the Post Office,

hopefully with an item of furniture. This year we are introducing new
craft activities. There will be opportunities to create lampshades and
padded notice boards. We will also have a trip to Norwich to visit a
fabric shop to purchase material and visit local antique/retro emporiums.

Animation
Everyone has enjoyed an animated film at some point in their life, where
the impossible is made to look possible! In five days we will not have
time to make a whole feature length film but we can create short
animated sequences that tell a story, are witty and are fun to watch.
All the materials and equipment will be provided by the school. What
you need to bring is your imagination and a willingness to work hard
and to try something new. There are many different ways of creating
images so you don’t need to be an amazing artist but we will need to
use cameras and computers for some stages of the work, so you should
be happy to work with technology.
