Retiring Member of the IOMC Board of Governors
Clair Callan, MD
Dr. Callan has been a healthcare consultant specializing in quality care
and performance improvement for hospitals and health systems across
the US. She also served as Vice President of Professional Standards at
the American Medical Association. While at the AMA, Dr. Callan
implemented the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement,
a multi-specialty organization that developed core performance
measurements to assess quality of care delivered to patients.
Dr. Callan has been active in IOMC both on the Board and as a Chair of
our Finance Committee for more than 10 years. Dr. Callan’s tireless
efforts have helped produce an IOMC that is stronger, and that is
substantially more representative of the health professions that we seek
to serve and support.
IOMC Honors
James M. Galloway, MD
Tonight IOMC is honoring the service of Dr. Jim Galloway. Dr. Galloway has
continuously dedicated his career to prevention, improving access and
providing high quality care to underserved populations. After 22 years of
caring for American Indians and Alaska Natives, he was selected as the US
Department of Health and Human Services Regional Health Administrator for
Region V. In this capacity, he served as the lead federal physician, the
principal federal public health official and the senior USPHS officer for Region
V which encompasses 6 states of the upper mid-west and over 20% of the US
population. In this role, Dr. Galloway’s leadership responsibilities included
disease prevention, health promotion, women and minority health, the
reduction of health disparities, the fight against HIV/AIDS, the Medical
Reserve Corps, pandemic influenza and emergency planning and response.
Dr. Galloway is an award winning physician, a respected scientist and well
known teacher and public speaker. Dr. Galloway is board-certified in both
internal medicine and cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of
Physicians, the American College of Chest Surgeons, the American College of
Cardiology and the American Heart Association. Dr. Galloway has published
over 180 articles, abstracts, book chapters and one book titled "Primary Care
of Native American Patients: Diagnosis, Therapy and Epidemiology." Dr.
Galloway has been repeatedly selected by his peers as one of the "Best
Doctors in America."
2014 Henry P. Russe, MD Citation for
Exemplary Compassion in Health Care
Linda Rae Murray, MD, MPH
Dr. Linda Rae Murray has had an exemplary career in medicine, public health
and as a social justice activist in Chicago over the past three and a half
decades. Dr. Murray attended the University of Illinois at Chicago where she
earned her bachelor of science degree in mathematics in 1973. Murray
continued her education at UIC, earning her MD in 1977 and a MPH in 1980
from the UIC School of Public Health.
After completing her medical degree, Dr. Murray did her residency in
internal medicine and occupational therapy at Cook County Hospital where
she remained until 1980. During her residency she was President of the
Housestaff Association for an unprecedented two years during the tumultuous
period in the late 1970s when the hospital was threatened with closure. Her
vocal advocacy for the hospital and its patients was one crucial element that
helped transform the hospital during that period.
In 1981, Dr. Murray left Cook County Hospital for Bethany Hospital, also in
Chicago and in 1983 she became the medical director for the Manitoba
Federation of Labour in Winnipeg, Canada. She returned to the US in 1985
and began teaching at Meharry Medical College and in 1987 returned to
Chicago to work with the Chicago Department of Health.
Most recently, Dr. Murray has held a series of senior leadership positions
within the Cook County Health and Hospital Systems including the chief
medical officer of Primary Care & Community Health; Ambulatory &
Community Health Network of Cook County, interim CEO and currently Chief
Medical Officer of the Cook County Department of Public Health.
Dr. Murray is a nationally recognized public health leader and served as the
President of the American Public Health Association in 2011. Dr. Murray has
lectured extensively on issues of public health and social justice. She has
been a health activist and single payer advocate since the earliest days of her
career.
It is with great pleasusre that the IOMC and Rush University Medical Center
award Dr. Linda Rae Murray the
