FOREWORD
Twenty-ten has been an eventful year for Jurong Country Club, with changes coming from
the course to the clubhouse, and right through to its management team and sub-committees.
Similarly, the Sports and Recreation (S&R) department faces a new set of challenges. While our
key objectives have not changed, and that is to provide the best possible activities for members
and their guests, the challenge lies in garnering support for our monthly themed events.
So, in order to make the Club a healthier, safer and happier place to be in, we ensured that the
S&R is properly resourced in terms of FUN:
1. Full and exciting calendar of social and sporting activities
2. Unique and adventurous themed social and sporting events
3. Nice and pleasant social and recreational facilities
To accomplish the massive job of keeping club members entertained, our team applied the
fundamental logic: “divide and conquer”.
1. Adventurous Social Activities
With “Adventurous” in mind, we featured Chinese Yo-Yo in the Chinese New Year Celebrations,
a marching parade during Mardi Gras, and celebrities singing on stage during Dangdut Nite. To
bring events from a global platform to our little club, we brought the World Cup 2010 Fever into
the Time Out Pub and the biggest German festival, Oktoberfest. Coming up, we have Christmas
Light up and Countdown Party for this festive season. On-going activities such as KAPAP Martial
Arts classes, dancing classes, Ukulele classes, KTV lessons, Tombola sessions and other family
events such as Fishing Competition and the newly-introduced JCC Dance Nite continue to keep
you hooked on to JCC.
2. Active Sporting Activities
Our tennis team did us proud when they brought back the Champion’s title during the STA InterClub Singles League. The team went on to participate in many events and matches with other
clubs with remarkable results. Our Squash team revived the popular and well-received squash
ladder event, reaping many compliments from players who have long awaited the return of the
ladder competitions. Our Swimming Team also did a great job; hosting the Tri-Series Step Up
Challenge that had many clubs participating and gave our swimmers the chance to experience
the rigours of competitive swimming.
3. Jackpot
In appreciation of our members’ favourite pastime, we upped the excitement factor for
our regular pundits by raising the cash prize to as high as $45,000, not including a variety
of monthly specials. To keep their tummies warm, we added a wider range of snacks and
beverages, as well as novel wine appreciation events to make members’ time-out in the Jackpot
Room just that bit better!
4. S&R Facilities
Sports and Recreation – these three little words span the whole of the Club. From the card room
in the Sports Complex to the Time Out Pub in the main clubhouse; from the Billiards Room in
the basement to the Olympic Swimming Pool; ensuring that these facilities are well maintained
remains our core day-to-day priority. The team is constantly looking at ways to improve our
facilities and make them into more clean and green areas. Members are welcome to give
their constructive input to our team at the Poolside Reception Counter and we assure you the
Committee will certainly do our best to meet your needs.
5. Opportunities for all to participate
The Committee’s major goal is to increase participation in our Sports & Recreation activities,
in particular amongst those groups that traditionally had lower levels of participation. We are
reaching this by downsizing our events into smaller, focused activities to reach out to core
groups. We have also increased the value of our lucky draw and event prizes, and supplemented
our events with better quality refreshments.
Our tactical plans have brought about concrete results; we have seen an increase in our
participation rates – from couples to groups. And we would like to thank all who came for their
support! Though we still have a long way to our goals, I believe with members’ support we will
achieve great results in the future.
All these initiatives required pulling together a wide range of contribution and support.
The work requires a passion for making a difference, a passion for listening and meeting
members’ needs and expectations, and willingness to share resources. My team and the
management will continue to display this level of passion, and continue to work on innovative
techniques to roll out more exciting activities.
In closing, as the Chairman of Sports & Recreation, I would like to thank all members for your
undying support in our past events and activities. Without your participation, our goals will not
be fulfilled. Hence, please continue with your enduring support!

CLUB NEWS
Kopichat
Close to one hundred members turned up for the recent
Kopichat held on Wednesday 18 August, which focused
on giving members an update on the progress of our golf
course upgrading project and the development of the
Club’s infrastructure.
Dr Tan first thanked and welcomed members for making
time to attend the exchange session. These sessions have
been helpful in facilitating two-way dialogues between
members and the management. Discussions during the
Kopichat have been useful in giving committees insight
into what members want for the club, and the golf course
upgrading project was one case in point.
Through various discussions at prior Kopichat sessions, the
management was able to zoom in on members’ areas of
concerns, both for the course
and its related costs. The
result: a majestic new 18-hole
championship golf course is
now in progress with members’
support. Cheong Ming, our
Golf Course and Project
Manager, was happy to report
that works on the course have
been proceeding according
to schedule despite the poor
weather, and that the club is

new nine hole in March 2011.
Members were treated to a slideshow of the works that
have been conducted since June to date. Extensive
preparation, earthworks and maintenance of the
establishment have been carried out. To the layman, this
essentially means some buggy paths and retaining walls
have been constructed; a new pond excavated; mounds,
tee boxes, greens and bunkers roughly shaped; fairways
re-leveled; and affected trees transplanted. These works
will carry on till February 2011, along with progressive
landscaping, turfing and sand capping.
Members were also informed that we will be the first club
in Singapore to lay Geotextile extensively throughout the
golf course, especially on all our fairways, to enhance the
sand capping and lengthen the lifespan of the course. We
will also be the first in Singapore to use High Density Poly
Ethylene Pipes (HDPE) with electro-fusion joints for all our
greens to ensure that the pipes will not burst and for the
greens to be protected at all times, and link all rain shelters

and halfway houses by Fiber Optic cable. The latter will
allow more reliable signal transmission as compared to
a wireless system, and enable connection of information
display or point-of-sales systems and even our own LAN
in future. On top of these, we are also one of the few
clubs in Singapore to use Bunker Liners, which not only
protect the bunker sand from washout during rain, but
also allow for better feature and creative design. A new
wall-to-wall fully automated and smart irrigation system
will help the club reduce utility costs, increase playability
and enhance the overall appearance of the course. In line
with Singapore’s Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters concept
(ABC), we will also be amongst the few in Singapore to
introduce Wetland planting for both turf irrigation and
aesthetical purposes. Plans for a new buggy storage shed

halfway houses and rain shelters are also in the pipeline.
The presentation concluded with enthusiastic applause
from members who were visibly happy and satisfied with
the progress of the golf course renovation.
On the development of the Club’s infrastructure, General
Manager Peter Goh shared with members proposed
architectural drawings to transform the club’s facade and
social facilities. These included a new main entrance with
a guardhouse and barrier system; a new lifestyle cum
tennis centre with covered car park; a new poolside centre
with new foyer, viewing decks, spa and Jacuzzi centre;
the addition of an aerobics room to complement the gym;
and a new doubles squash court. The poolside area will
also be enhanced with new sunbathing and viewing decks
with swooping canopies for new recreational and dining
possibilities. Each project was quoted individually to
allow flexibility for changes pending members’ input and
comments.
Some members took the opportunity to query the club on
rumours that the club had committed the redevelopment
of the clubhouse project at a total cost of $13.6 million.
Dr Tan explained that the redevelopment of the clubhouse
is a massive undertaking that cannot be attempted at one
go, but only on project basis. Individual design briefs
and quotations will have to be called based on the Club’s
financial guidelines and the Club cannot embark on any
redevelopment project without first getting members’
support and agreement. The same stringent procedures
Proposed plans on club
house upgrading were
applied for the remodeling of the golf course had been
applied for the clubhouse redevelopment plans; i.e. the
projects were quoted individually, as presented by Peter
in his slides, and an overall figure will then be presented
with breakdowns to the membership body for approval.
Dr Tan assured members that the team had deliberately
adhered to the financial guidelines in order to avoid
misinterpretation of the Management and General
Committee’s intentions, and that there had been no
commitment from the Club for an architectural fee of $1
million as speculated. In fact, Dr Tan assured members that
if the figures were to be more than half a million dollars,
approval via a general meeting will need to be sought.
Towards the end of the session, members were visibly
convinced that the management and GC had indeed taken
the appropriate and necessary steps to ensure that the
club’s guidelines were adhered to, and that the rumours
they had been hearing about the Club’s commitment to
overspend were untrue.
Dr Tan summed up the session by thanking members for
their trust in the General Committee and Management,
and for their maturity in being able to debate such issues
of ethics and commitment transparently and honestly,
especially in view of the hefty finances involved. Dr
Tan also took the opportunity to extend his appreciation
to members serving on the General and other subcommittees for their dedication and sacrifices. The
Kopichat was attended by all General Committee members
with the exception of Cheong Tuck Meng.

Jurong Country Club Soft-Launches
Membership Drive
By now, members would have received news of the
Club offering limited numbers of Transferable Golfing
Memberships for sale to the public in a soft-launch from
25 September.
This follows upgrading and re-modelling works to the
first nine holes of our 18-hole championship golf course,
which started in June this year. This is currently progressing
according to schedule and if all goes well, the first nine is
expected to be open for play sometime in March next year.
Member-Get-Member Incentive Programme
All members are invited to extend the pre-launch
membership offer to their families and friends.
Special Pre-Launch Price
For every successful sign-up of a new member who is
introduced by an existing member, the Club will reward
the existing member with S$500 in cash and an additional
F&B voucher worth $250!
During this soft-launch – which the Club is terming its
“pre-launch” membership drive – members of the public
will have the opportunity to sign up for membership at a
special “pre-launch” price of under $55,000.
This “Member-Get-Member” incentive programme is
subject to terms and conditions. For details, please feel
free to call our Membership Consultants on 6568 5117.
Members may be pleased to note that while upgrading
works to the first nine holes are being completed, our
official price for a transferable golfing membership is
likely to be set at a minimum price between $55,000 and
$60,000. And once works are completed to all 18 holes
(targeted for December 2011), this price is planned for to
be even higher.
As part of the soft-launch, the Club’s ordinary nontransferable golfing members and social members were
also invited to apply to convert their existing memberships
into fully transferable golfing memberships at specially
discounted prices. This conversion scheme recognises
and rewards these categories of existing members for their
loyalty and patronage and the special price-offs are meant
to incentivise them to convert their memberships. Should

Placing
Marketing Efforts
In support of the launch, the Club has started running
a series of advertisements in various publications such
as Golf, Golf Digest, Golf Punk and Golf Vacations to
promote its membership drive to the public, among other
marketing measures.
A special copy of “The Jurong Times” – a marketing tabloid
that will provide members with more information about
our membership drive and upgrading works – is also
available from the golf reception counter.
We look forward to your continued support and to next
March when our first “brand new” nine holes open for

MEMBERSHIP
Posted Overseas? What To
Do With Your Membership
Applying for “Absent Membership” and What it Means
The “Absent Membership” scheme was introduced to assist
members who are posted overseas due to professional or
residency reasons. The scheme was developed based on
the understanding that absent members are supposedly
out of the country and will be unable to visit the Club. In
recompense, he enjoys relief on his membership account.
• Reduced Subscription Fees and Waiver of MSL
An absent member pays only 30% of their
subscriptions for the entire period they are away, which
could be from a minimum of six (6) months to a
maximum of 24 months. The quarterly Minimum
Spending Levy (MSL) is also waived during this period.
• Absent Members’ Accounts Are Frozen
The member’s account is frozen as he is supposedly
out of the country and will be unable to visit the Club,
hence the reduced subscription fees. This is also to
safeguard the member from having to pay for
unauthorised transactions.
• Minimum Length: Six Months
It should be noted that the Absent Membership scheme
can only be applied from a minimum of six months,
up to a maximum of 24 months. Members whose
postings are extended beyond the maximum period can
apply for extension.
Reactivating the Absent Member’s Account
The account will be automatically reactivated once
the full absentee period is served. However, should the
absent member’s term of overseas posting be shortened
unexpectedly, he can reactivate his account by sending
the Sales & Membership Department a written notice to
terminate his Absent Membership status at least seven (7)
days before his intended date of return.
• Top-up of Subscription Fees for Early Termination
In accordance with the Terms set out for Absent
Membership, a member may only activate his
membership AFTER 6 months of absentee status,
notwithstanding an extension of the absentee
application.
This means, if an absent member would like to utilize any
Club facility before the minimum six months’ period is
served, full subscription fees will be re-imposed as if he
was an active member. He therefore needs to make up
for the earlier 70% relief granted for his subscription fees
for the full six months regardless whether he returns for a
full or partial month. The MSL for the applicable quarterly
period will similarly be reinstated.
Some case examples:
Meeting the Requirement
John applied for an absent membership status for
nine (9) months starting from 1 January 2011. His
membership will be automatically reinstated on 1
October 2011. However, John wrote that he will be
back for a short home trip from 5th to 11th August 2011
and would like to play for the Club’s National Day Golf
Competition.
Reply from the Club: Yes, John has fulfilled the minimum 6
months’ requirement. He can take part in the National Day Golf
Competition with payment of the difference between the Active
and Absentee subscription fee just for that particular month.

Early Return
Jack has been on absent membership since 1 June 2010
for an applied 8 months period till 31 January 2011. On
1 November, Jack wrote that he would like to return to
play in a golf competition on 8 November.
Reply from the Club: Jack’s date of intended use falls within the
six-months’ minimum requirement period. Therefore, Jack has to
top up the difference in subscription fees for the full six months,
and pay any applicable MSL. Once Jack's membership account is
reactivated, his Absent Membership status will be automatically
terminated. Jack will have to re-apply for Absent Membership if he
intends to return to his overseas posting.

Redeem Your
Points To Pay For
Your Spending
From 1 October 2010, members can
redeem your reward points at any of
the Club’s five F&B outlets, with the
exception of the two Halfway Houses.
This means, you no longer need
to write in to the Membership
Department to request vouchers
to redeem your reward points. As
with major banking systems, your
reward points will be converted to
dollar value, which can be used to
immediately offset your spending at
the Golfers’ Terrace, Green Banyan,
Time Out Pub, Izumi or Fu Lin Men.
However, to ensure no mistakes in the
redemption, members are requested
to present their membership cards for
verification.
Of course, for those who would like
to still redeem vouchers and present
them as gifts to friends and family,
you can still do so.

Jurong Country Club Adopts
Jurong Lake
In recognition of the club’s efforts to support PUB’s
Active, Beautiful, Clean (waters project (ABC), we
are proud to announce that we have been named
as an adopter of Jurong Lake in PUB’s “Our Waters
Programme”.
This follows the Club’s efforts over the past two
years to reduce water usage as well as finding wayss
to recycle water for irrigating the golf course. In
fact, we will be one of the few clubs in Singapore
to introduce wetland planting and water garden
in our new course in support of PUB’s ABC
project. The water garden will help filter and clean water
naturally. Wetland planting will provide bio-diversity
t and
d attract
tt t more
dragonflies, damsel flies and, together with the fishes in the pond, add to the flora
and fauna of the golf course, and enhance our golfers' experience.
This augurs well for the Club as we embark on a journey to reposition ourselves,
especially in view of the redevelopment of Jurong into Jurong Lake District.
According to URA’s plan, Jurong Lake District will consist of two complementary
precincts, i.e. Jurong Gateway and Lakeside. Jurong Gateway is already rumoured
to be the largest commercial hub outside of the CBD while the latter is slated to
be Singapore’s latest waterfront playground surrounded by shopping malls, water
villages and boutique hotels. In fact, plans are already underway for the new
Jurong General Hospital to be located here in addition to statutory boards and
government agencies such as the Ministry of National Development. PUB have
also announced plans to move their offices to Jurong in the near future. With the
ongoing road and MRT extensions, the makeover to transform sleepy old Jurong
is already underway. One thing is for certain, the remodeling of the golf course
and proposed redevelopment of the clubhouse cannot come at an earlier time, as
we gear up to stay relevant in the coming years.

Welcome To The Family!
Assistant Course Superintendent
Durairaj S/O S. Kannu Pillai
(better known as Raj) joined us
on 5 July as Assistant Course
Superintendent. Raj’s main role
would be to upkeep, maintain
and improve the landscaping on
the golf course and clubhouse;
supervise the planting and pruning
of trees and shrubs; oversee the
proper maintenance of the golf course and use of fertilizers
and chemicals; as well as train staff on the proper
operation and upkeep of turf machinery and equipment.
With 28 years of horticultural experience, the silent, softspoken Raj spent most of his career in Sentosa Golf Club,
rising through the ranks from a Horticultural Assistant to
that of Golf Course Manager. Prior to his appointment with
us, Raj was responsible for ensuring that the landscape
and lawns within a tertiary institution’s campus were well
maintained. Raj’s extensive experience puts him in good
stead to assist the Course Manager in strengthening the
health of our golf course and raising the bar on their team’s
talent.
F&B Executive
Lindsey Cabance joined us on 24
August as Executive (F&B Outlets).
The bubbly Filipino brings with
her approximately a decade of
experience in F&B service delivery
and staff training. Proud mother of
a cute ten-year-old girl, Lindsey’s
main role will be to assist the
Head of Lifestyle in ensuring tiptop
service and adequate staffing for
the Club’s F&B outlets.
10
Lindsey’s main duties would include rostering the service
staff; improve and develop the Standard Operating
Procedures (SOP); train the F&B staff; enforce discipline
and assess performance; ensure service standards are
adhered to; and attend to feedback from members and
guests. Prior to joining us, Lindsey was responsible for the
efficient operations of her F&B outlet. She also trained
new staff to the proficiency level required for achieving
the highest productivity and profitability. Lindsey’s past
experience in frontline service will definitely put her
in good stead to assist the Club in ensuring the smooth
overall operation of the Club’s F&B outlets and F&B related
events organized by the Club.
Marketing Manager
Just a day after Singapore
celebrated her 45th birthday, Fion
Lee joins the Club as our new
Marketing Manager. Momentous,
as Fion is tasked with the colossal
role of growing our Club’s
membership and developing new
revenue channels in view of the
golf course upgrading project and
future redevelopment of the clubhouse.
Assisting the Marketing Communications Committee
headed by Vice President Joe Pereira, Fion’s immediate
tasks would be to develop and launch the Club’s new
membership drive; develop and execute resourceful
online and offline marketing strategies; as well as source
strategic partner relationships and sponsorships to generate
additional sources of revenue for the Club. Fion will also
oversee the Sales, Membership and Communications
sections and lead the teams in the provision of member
services, sales as well as communication platforms such as
the newsletter and website.
With more than a decade’s experience in marketing,
sales and promotions as well as advertising and events
management in both local and regional markets, Fion’s
exposure to global agency heads, business leaders and
marketing gurus will be an asset to the Club. We look
forward to her bringing exciting new marketing ideas to the
table.
Accountant
Steve Tan joined the Club on
15 September as Accountant, in
replacement of former accountant
Raymond Wong who has left the
Club.
Steve, who hails from Malaysia and
comes with six years of experience
in the accounting line, working his
way up from an Audit Assistant to that of Audit Senior, will
take over the role of being custodian for the management of
cash at the Jackpot; process payroll for senior staff; follow
up on debt management and collection; review journal
entries, ledgers and reconciliation; as well as managing the
Club’s bank account for disbursements of funds.
Steve will assist the Head of Finance in auditing areas
susceptible to misappropriation. Prior to joining the Club,
Steve was appointed as Accountant with an F&B company,
and we are certain his experience will add that much
needed support to our Finance team.

Many a times, Yuk Fong will not hesitate to stand in for

golfers in the odd occasion when their dress code do not
comply with the Club’s, as well as offered to lend golf bags
and trolleys to members' overseas guests when they come
unprepared.
Aslinda D/O Majid, our ever-smiling Golf Relations

remembers the ever-ready smile whenever Aslinda meets
a customer, be it members, guests or even her
own colleagues. Aslinda has demonstrated
exceptional service quality whenever she assists
visitors in their queries and never hesitates to
go the extra mile to help them. In the absence
