Partnerships for Learning
In 2014 we have been looking at ways to develop stronger and more
meaningful connections between campuses and with members of our
community. We are encouraging our students to explore different ways of
connecting as strong connections with each other foster an environment of
growth and learning. A student’s learning journey is enhanced by quality
relationships, engagement, self-regulation, involvement in mastery of learning,
enhanced self-efficacy and self-esteem. The photos below illustrate three ways
that students have formed connections over the
past few weeks:

 Students from Years 5 and 10 joined together as
cross-campus pairs with the Meals 4 You team to
make lunchbox fillers.
 Year 11 Technology Studies students met with
Prep students to learn about their “toy” needs. A
key to any design brief is an understanding of
the client’s needs. In this case it was the needs
of Prep students.
 Female students from both campuses joined with
their mothers to enjoy a “High Tea” on the
Senior Campus. This was a chance to connect in
a very different environment for many students.
 This afternoon there is opportunity for further
connections as boys join dads to play cricket.
Uniform Shop
These events have provided much positive
comment from students. Each event provides
opportunity for connection alongside a “real world”
experience.
Pray for the Meals 4 You Team
On Tuesday morning it was discovered that the
commercial freezer containing over 200 frozen
meals had lost power. Consequently the stored meals have been lost. Once we
work out the “why” we will put a solution in place to minimise the possibility of
this occurring again in the future. In the meantime please keep the Meals 4 You
team in your prayers.
Staffing News
 Sam Yarnold (Community Relations) will be leaving us as an employee at the
end of the year. She intends to spend more time with family and commence
study.
 Bevan Rudolph will also leave at the end of the year. Initially travel will see
him in North America before returning to Europe.
 Mrs Ruth Snoswell has accepted the part-time position in Learning Support /
SWD on the Senior Campus.
Advertisements will go live this week for teaching positions on the Junior
Campus for 2015. There will be two advertisements – a single permanent
position and the other for the balance of our multiple maternity leave positions.

This Friday is National “Day for Daniel. The Daniel Morcombe Foundation Inc.
(DMF) is committed to “Keeping Kids Safe”.
One of the main messages is to RECOGNISE danger and signs of danger,
REACT by getting away from danger to somewhere safe and to REPORT to
an adult.
The Junior Campus will not be participating in the wearing of red this year.
Yet we strongly encourage families to have discussions around safety, plans and procedures that you
want to all understand around the messages of recognise, react and report.
The Foundation has also recently launched a “Help ME” phone App, where an emergency text
message with GPS location details can be sent to
two nominated numbers, if the phone owner feels

ICAS English and Maths
The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are independent skills-based
assessments with a competition element. Over one million student entries are accepted from over
6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. In addition, students from over 20 countries
including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA participate in ICAS each
year. This year we have offered students the opportunity to participate in all 6 of the competitions
and many have chosen to participate.
Congratulations go to the many students who were involved in ICAS for English and Maths. We have
mentioned before that we are working on a growth mindset approach at our school and again these
participating students have stepped up to the challenge by entering these competitions. Every
student who has participated should be proud of themselves.
We had 44 Junior Campus students participate in the English component and 62 in the Maths. The
results have already been sent home with students and we would like to highlight some special
achievements.

Afternoon Pick Up
I would like to thank all parents for their increasing diligence and efforts in and around our Drop off
and Pick up area at the front of our campus. Further to the information I included last I would like to
ask all families to remind their children to enter their cars from the footpath (passenger side door)
rather than walking out onto the road. The potential risk of harm from incoming parent traffic or cars
reversing out of carparks increases as soon as children or adults step out onto the road.
Where possible we would also encourage parents to speak with their children about placing their bags
inside the car, rather than in the boot, to avoid children stepping onto the road with cars pulling up
behind them. I realise with the number of after school activities increasing and sometimes the sheer number of children this is not
always possible. Your continued support in this matter is greatly
appreciated.

We Celebrate
Congratulations to Stephanie Bleckwehl who
placed third in the 800metres final at the QLD
State Secondary School’s Athletics Carnival on
the weekend. Stephanie did the run in 2mins
and 18 seconds which was a personal
best. She is currently first reserve for the
National
Championships
in
Adelaide
in
December. We congratulate Stephanie on such
an amazing achievement which is the
result of effort and dedication.
Congratulations to our Year 8 Rugby team who
were honoured at assembly this week for winning the pennant. The boys should be very pleased with
their efforts of being undefeated for the season and being able to call themselves District Champions.

Year 8 Musical
The Year 8 cohort presents “Johnny and the Bomb” for a very limited season. Performances are on
this Friday and Saturday nights - 7.30 at Hills Church, Queens Road. This is an opportunity to
support our young people as they challenge themselves creatively. Tickets can still be ordered via the
form on page 6.

The Jacarandas are out which means that we are in the midst of the busyness of Term 4. During
Term 4 we have some key events that should be marked on the calendar:
20 November – Year 12 Valedictory Service (by invitation)
21 November – Year 12 Farewell Service
27 November – Senior Campus Thanksgiving Service – 7.00pm Hills Church
The Thanksgiving Service is an opportunity for our community to celebrate and give thanks for the
blessings of 2014. All students and families are cordially invited.
Partnerships
At Assembly on Tuesday, we were able to acknowledge the efforts of our students to reach out and
support the community. Melissa Speare accepted the proceeds of a Free dress Day on behalf of
Smile for Smiddy. The Senior Campus raised 472.25 to donate. Smiling for Smiddy supports cancer
research that has a national and international impact. Funds enable the dedicated team of scientists
at Mater Research to undertake potentially life-saving research into the causes, prevention and
improved treatments of cancer.
In addition, all the students who participated in the 40hr Famine were acknowledged. The Senior
Campus managed to raise 4557.60 for going without food, technology, furniture or talking. Scott
Whelan was the highest fundraiser and should be congratulated for his efforts. Next year marks 40
years of 40hr Famine, so students were encouraged to consider participation.

An important partnership of the Prince of
Peace community, is the work of the
Meals 4 You initiative. Last week a group
of Year 10 students worked alongside Year 5 students to make their contribution to this important
ministry. All members of the Senior Campus can support this initiative by contributing to the Grocery
challenge. Donations will be collected during Pastoral Care class on Fridays. Help your House to get a
head start on house points for the term and help a great cause!

RSL Memorial Plaque
The RSL Community Link project is dedicated to keeping alive the names, memories and deeds of
departed Australian and Allied service veterans no matter when
or where they served or when they died. For only $19, the RSL
Community Link project will provide two name plates:

 A ‘Veteran’s Memorial Plaque’ which shows the basic details
of the veteran’s service and includes a full-colour ribbon bar
indicating the medals issued to the veteran, and
 A ‘Representative’s Link Card’ to show the representative’s
relationship to the veteran
The aim is to provide these name plates to representatives of
veterans so they can wear them at future ANZAC or
Remembrance Day events. For more information or to get an

Y11 Geography students investigate Urban Renewal in Brisbane
On Tuesday, 21 October the Year 11 Geography students went off initially
to the Powerhouse to meet up with Andrew Taylor from the Urban
Renewal department of Brisbane City Council. Andrew spoke to them
about the urban renewal that has occurred in Brisbane over the last 20
years and then took them on a guided tour through New Farm and
Teneriffe to see what has been done. They then went to Newstead which
is currently going through urban renewal as previous industrial sites are
being replaced by mixed higher density living, commercial and retail
developments.
The students then had the opportunity to travel to West End to view the
various industrial sites that stretch south along the Brisbane River from
the Kurilpa Bridge which is the site of the Draft Kurilpa Master Plan to
re-develop the area. The students enjoyed the day out and to see what a
difference it makes to the liveability of places when industrial sites are
given a new lease on life from various urban renewal projects.
SENIOR CAMPUS
On Friday 17 October we had a Middle Schools Dance at the Senior
Campus. A range of students from Years 7-9 attend and all had a lot of fun
dancing and singing along to the music. Special thanks to Jak for
being our DJ for the night and thank you too all the students who attended as
the night could not have been a blast without you there. Also thank you to all
the teachers who help run it and gave up their Friday night to supervise the
dance and students who help set up.

Inter School Sport
Year 5/6/7 Cricket – Another wonderful performance by both cricket teams. Team White put in their
best batting performance for the year to amass 99 runs with 4 pairs scoring in excess of 20 runs in
their allotted overs. Sebastian V and Keiron M top scored with 23. White then continued their excellent
form restricting Albany Creek to just 63 runs. Harry J and Liam Mc were outstanding bowlers, both
collecting 3 wickets in their overs. Team Blue were defeated by a very strong Albany Creek outfit, 71
to 50. Pick of the batters were Lachlan S, Sam M and Matthew B. In a very even bowling performance,
Jaiman S and Anna D both showed excellent control throughout their overs.
Year 5 Girls Touch - A beautiful warm day greeted the girls Friday and it was perfect day for
Touch. The games were mostly close and the defence needed to be spot on this week. Laura, Elkira,
Olivia, Tyla, Trinity, Olivia and Molly R showed excellent skills this week with straight runs and clear
tags. Our passing was more adventurous this week along with our quick ‘play the ball’ helped put
pressure on the opposition. Congratulations to all the girls who continue to play with enthusiasm. POP

SPORT SCORE
Year 7 Girls Touch - The girls showed more improvement again this week, holding formation and
advancing in attack and defence. They had some close games, unfortunately just losing 2-1 to Eatons
Hill B, 2-0 to Craigslea, 1-0 to Everton Park and 4-1 to Eatons Hill A. Madison Wagenaar and Zoe
Roberts showed great improvement and effort. Olivia Cooper worked hard and demonstrated maturity
as a Year 6 playing in the Year 7 team. Aaliyah Coggins and Taylah Merrell both scored tries and
Jessica Ebbott was unlucky to have a try disallowed. Hayley Churchill and Jasmine Hodges led the
teams well and Georgia Dux worked hard throughout. Well done to all girls.
Year 5/6/7 Volleyball - Our enthusiastic beach volleyball teams are continuing to develop their
skills and are working hard to control the ball on receiving the serve. All players are to be commended for supporting their fellow team mates and the outstanding sportsmanship shown towards their
competition. Congratulations and well done to all players for their keen play this week. Special
mention to Caitlin Lawrence and Anna Scott for accurate serving, and Ian Mlynarik for his court
coverage and digging abilities.
Inter House Sport
Endruro Chess has reached the pointy end of the inaugural competition with Laver set to battle it out
against Bradman in the Grand Final on Thursday. Laver are strong favourites after 3 straight wins,
however Bradman have developed a slick and consistent style that should see an epic Final that will be
long remembered. Fraser and Jackson are set to battle for the minor places with both teams very
evenly matched. Huge thanks to Mr Russell for his wonderful perspective and even handed refereeing.

Brisbane International Schools Challenge
Hot Shots Red The Brisbane International Schools Challenge Hot Shots Red Ball competition is open
to all pupils in Y1-3 at your child’s school! It doesn’t matter if your child has never played tennis
before – Hot Shots is a modified form of tennis that is easy for kids to play and learn and the Brisbane
International Schools Challenge is the perfect fun team atmosphere in which to pick-up the basics of
the game! Over four exciting weeks of Saturday competition (Saturday 8, 15, 22 & 29 November),
players will compete at Pure Tennis Ferny Hills before participating in a fun Regional Final at the
Queensland Tennis Centre on Sunday 7 December. All players will be invited to play in the Regional
Final regardless of their team’s overall position on the leader-board. The winners & runner ups of the
Regional Final will then go on the play the Grand Finals which will be held at the Queensland Tennis
Centre during the Brisbane International!

Back to School Fitting Appointments: Uniform fittings are required for all students changing into
a new style of uniform eg. Prep, Junior, Year 7 Middle School uniform, Year 10 Senior uniform.
Appointments can now be booked for November and January using the link to the online booking
system on the school website. Dates for appointments and shop hours are also listed on the school
website. Once logged in and your student name is listed, please use the up arrow to change their
year level to “Uniform Shop” (listed above Year 12), then choose “Book Appointment” (to the
right). Once an appointment is selected you can choose to receive a confirmation email by scrolling
to the top of the page. Fittings are 20 mins for 1 to 2 students, and provide personal service in a quiet shop. To allow for possible growth over the school break, we are happy to exchange any items
purchased in November that are still in shop condition with the shop receipt, should the item not be
suitable in January.

Don’t you worry child
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let
your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will
guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)
As the busyness of the end of year descends upon us, we could all use this kind of reassurance:
Don’t you worry child; heaven’s got a plan for you.
It’s not a bad deal really. God is simply asking us to exchange our worries for his peace. We take our
busyness, our brokenness, our failures, our pain, our worries, the niggling things that keep us awake
in the middle of the night, the blahs of life, and we swap them for peace and freedom; all for the
price of a simple prayer on our behalf. Jesus is the one who has paid the greater price for us.
God has a plan for you. And that plan is life in all its fullness, life in all its abundance, life in all its
complexity, life in all its freedom. God can even use the heartbreaks and heartaches of life to bring
us closer to living out this plan. So go ahead, let go of the worry and swap it for a bit of peace.

 Prayer is one of our Core Values at PoP. “We believe we can do nothing without prayer. We
are committed to be a praying people who support and cover everything we do with prayer.”
Prayer happens in lots of ways and places here at PoP. However the leaders have felt God is calling
us to come together for regular and specific times of prayer. We have designated the first
Wednesday of each month, 7.30 as – 8.30pm prayer gatherings. The format envisaged will be:
a. A particular ministry area will be shared and prayed for
b. The needs of people will be prayed

c. We will spend time in prayer listening for God’s voice and direction for us.

Prince of Peace has a long-term vision for the ongoing development of appropriate
physical resources. Apart from government sources, funding for development projects at the school comes from
two main areas: Firstly, our Building Fund is generously supported by contributions from parents and friends of
the school. But the majority of funding is gained from the LLL – through the provision of Matching Deposit low
interest loans at 5% per annum.
