JULY HAPPENINGS at Haig Point
Happenings from the Chief
Happy 30th Anniversary!
I know the front cover’s photo has been seen by many, and you are likely to see it as you
come and go during your day. To me, it signifies what Haig Point is all about—a land
rich in history, tradition and progress. The 1873 Lighthouse is the beacon of our community,
and the American flag waves as representation of our great country.
By the time you read this issue, our celebration of Haig Point’s 30 years is already
underway. While the partying may come to a close after the Fourth of July
festivities, I wanted to take a moment to honor Haig Point’s past, talk about the present
and set the stage for the future.
Our history dates back to 1735 when George Haig I purchased 500 acres on Daufuskie
Island. In 1986, International Paper set up extensive infrastructure, restored the lighthouse
and hired Rees Jones to build the initial golf course. Also at this time, the Strachan
Mansion was moved from St. Simons Island, Georgia to Haig Point.
Doug Egly
Chief Executive Officer
As for the present, I hope you’ve had the opportunity to
try out the new Beach Club and Adult Pool furniture. The
lounge chairs, umbrellas and cabana seating were chosen for
their comfort, durability and appearance.
Our ferry and water taxi system are of utmost importance to us as your
mode of transportation, and we appreciate it as the place to catch
up with friends or simply have downtime at the beginning and end
of your day. The Board and Transportation Committee have been working
on a 10-year plan to prepare our fleet for the next 30 years.
The cart path replacement project has begun and looks fantastic. The
completion of the paths are the final touches in restoring the Signature
Course to its great national status enjoyed over our history.
Over the next 30 years, we may not know what the future holds,
but there are things we know for certain. The streets will continue
to be safe for kids to play; our neighbors will be our close friends;
the golf will be extraordinary; the clubs will be places to relax
and enjoy great food; and we will live in the ultimate location.
Cheers to the next 30 years,
Doug Egly

Saturday: 1:30 pm Shotgun Start | Sunday: 9:30 am Shotgun Start
We will once again host the HJT for our third year. The HJT is
considered one of the premier Junior Golf Tours in the country, and
they consider Haig Point as one of their best host sites all season.
The field is expected to consist of 80 juniors from all over the
country. Please note we will have limited morning tee times on
Saturday with only afternoon tee times available on Sunday. Please
contact the Golf Shop staff if we can be of assistance in planning a tee
time at another local club during this weekend.
MERCHANDISE SALE OF THE MONTH
With hot summer days come sweaty palms when playing golf;
having a golf glove becomes a must this time of year. During July, all
in-stock Titleist and Foot-Joy gloves will be offered at 30% off their
retail price. So stop by to pick out a new glove to help you “keep a
grip” on your game during the hot humid days!
GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH
Practice like you play! Every wonder why we get on the practice tee
and hit so many good shots; then we go to the course and become
a completely different player? Reason is that most of us go to the
practice tee and take a 7-iron for example, stand in the same spot
with a perfect flat lie every time and grove the swing. When you are
playing on the course, it would be very rare to hit two 7-irons in a row.
So the next time you go out to practice, take that same 7-iron and hit
no more than two-three shots to a middle flag, then two-three
shots to a left flag, and then two-three shots to a right flag. Next, hit
your hybrid and then your driver no more than three shots in a row for
each club followed by some wedge shots to three different targets.
The key is to practice like you play by NOT hitting the same shot over
and over. If you can make this habit part of your practice routine,
you should see your game more consistently transfer over to the
course.

WIMBLEDON ROUND-ROBIN
Friday, July 1

am. Following the tennis, our traditional
luncheon of strawberries and cream will
be served. Please be sure to wear your best
Wimbledon whites. Entry will be limited to full courts. Entry fee
$10.00 per person, member charge. Please contact the Haig Point
Tennis Center for more information at 843.341.8114.
DON’T GET WET
During these warm summer days, the
idea of playing tennis in a swimming pool
sounds pretty good. Playing in a pool will
cool you off, but it will also improve your
volley. Too often when players hit their
volleys, their racquet drops down to their
feet on the way to the ball. If they were in a pool, their racquets
would be getting wet. To make sure your racquet takes the
shortest route to the ball, keep your racquet above the water.

4-6 Servings
If you are looking for a summertime salad slightly off the beaten path, here is one I believe you will enjoy. Just remember
to serve it very well chilled; the colder the better. It is very refreshing and goes well with almost anything off the grill.
Ingredients:
2 lbs. fresh jicama (peeled & julienned)
1 red bell pepper (seeded & julienned)
1 green bell pepper (seeded & julienned)
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
¼ cup rice wine vinegar
1 cup orange juice concentrate
½ medium red onion (peeled & julienned)
2 tbsp. chopped parsley
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions:
Toss first eight ingredients together in large bowl,
then salt and pepper to taste. Toss lightly again. Chill
thoroughly for one hour and serve.

JULY
MAY HAPPENINGS at Haig Point
My Point of View
By Sean and Maureen Devine
My Point of View is written by those who know best—our
residents and members. This month, we feature Sean and
Maureen Devine.
Sean and I are what we jokingly call ourselves “Irish Gypsies.” Both
of us are military brats, and in our adult careers we continued to
move about the country and even lived overseas. Our longest stay
ever found us residing in the Bay Area, but even then we lived in
three different areas over the past 10 years.
So when we decided to move closer to our children and
grandchildren who live in the D.C. area, finding a place to settle
was an overwhelming task at first glance. Recognizing all the
wonderful places we have lived, finding someplace so unique
and inviting seemed like a daunting challenge. We eventually
narrowed it down to a vision that would include a place where
we would be happy, as well as having our children view the
location as a destination they would long to visit.
Since Sean and I both grew up moving around, never close to
relatives and barely knowing our grandparents, it was very
important that we find an environment, an experience if you
will, that would give our grandchildren enchanting memories
for years to come. We wanted poignant, soulful memories that
would be shared with their own children as to what it was like
visiting Grandma and Grandpa in a day gone by. It needed to
capture the essence of life that remarks to us all the true
value of the human experience lived in joy and love.
Sounds like a tall order, but life sometimes moves us in mysterious
ways. One day a year ago March, while on a Discovery Package,
we found ourselves standing on the shores of Daufuskie Island.
We breathlessly took in the pristine beauty of nature at its best,
awing us with a show of color, scents and aliveness of otherness.
We were humbled.
And yet the island kept giving, as we met others who welcomed
us with genuine hospitality and graciousness. The community
outreach was something we had never experienced in all of our
travels. Everyone here is interesting and unique in his or her own
right, and we believe the richness of their collective lives has been
instrumental in creating this unique community.
We have not even touched on the activities that abound,
never allowing us to even once announce another boring day!
One feels alive and captivated by this small island, a place of
refuge and solace that can unexpectedly capture you in a
moment of transcendent peace and overwhelming activity.
We love being outdoors, and for us life on Daufuskie Island is like
living on a nature preserve.
Maureen, son Brendan, Sean and daughter Sarah
In case you are wondering, our children and grandchildren love
it here. Quinn, who is three-and-one-half-years-old, told me the
other day she had a dream about Fawn, one of the horses at
the Equestrian Center. Even though she won’t be here until July
1, she has already packed her bag! Maggie, four, and her sister
Ella, two, are in the process of moving back to the States after a
couple of years of living in Japan and are ready to explore in
wonder Daufuskie and Haig Point. Dillon, Quinn’s two-year-old
brother, is fascinated with machines. Every time we talk to him he
says “new cart” because we got a new golf cart during his last visit.
They were here at Easter, and he can’t wait to get back and ride on
Grandma and Grandpa’s “new cart!”
In August of last year, we bought a homesite with the
intention to build a home, but then an existing home on
Lighthouse Court caught our attention. We moved in about
a month ago and truthfully it feels as if we have always been
here. That must be what “home” feels like.

JULY HAPPENINGS at Haig Point
Dear Members,
Message from Membership
Our Discovery Experiences continue to grow with the “experience” constantly being fine-tuned
and enhanced. We now have had or have booked over 40 visits with an additional 15 pending.
Great job Staff and Ambassadors!
Real estate activity as a direct result of the Discovery Experiences include six offers on resales
with one closing, two offers being accepted, one turned down due to financing and two offers
coming soon. We also have two hot leads for club-owned property and three hot leads for
resales all coming from these prospects.
An update on non-Discovery Experience tours (usually a few hours to a half-day) includes
over 40 real estate and membership prospects coming from a variety of sources. Great to see
the on-going activity and interest in our amazing community!
Affiliate Club update: the McMahons from The Union League of Philadelphia were here for a long
weekend. They are pictured here heading to the pool before the Equestrian Ride and Wine event.
They said they had an incredible time here and can’t wait to spread the word about Haig Point at
their club. We are in the planning stages of an Affiliate Club golf event this fall, and we will keep
you posted on dates, format and how to register.
Please welcome the following new members to Haig Point: Robert & Jennifer Spencer; Dr. Felicia
& Johnny Bustle; Robert & Julianna Lauvetz; and Michael Sherman and Cherry Camacho.
Thank you,

WHAT’S UP DUCK?
In 1993, International Paper installed 25
Wood Duck boxes at Haig Point. By 1996,
a survey conducted by the South Carolina
Waterfowl Association found 288 ducklings
in the boxes, an increase of 40 over the year
before and more than double the number of
ducklings in the boxes just two years earlier.
Those original boxes, most of which you can still see today around Haig
Point, provide a nesting place for the ducks similar to the tree cavities and
crevices in which they naturally nest. The metal baffles below the boxes
provide protection for the eggs and ducklings from predators such as raccoons
and snakes.
Unlike most ducks, the Wood Duck, AIX SPONSA, has strong claws
that it uses to perch in trees. The Wood Duck lays six-16 eggs that
incubate for about 30 days. It is the only North American duck that
regularly produces two broods in a single year. Chicks hatch with a full coat
of down and leave the nest a day after hatching. Wood Duck populations
have increased since the 1990s, although we have seen a decrease in the
population at Haig Point and probably on Daufuskie Island generally.
The decrease in the population at Haig Point is likely due to
development around the original sites of the nest boxes and a lack of
regular maintenance.

July Calendar
Dear Members,
What a year we are having here at Haig Point! 2015 proved to be an amazing year of increased Member patronage
at all of our venues as well as special events throughout the year. The Food and Beverage staff is very grateful. Your
continued support assists us in improving our services to you throughout the year. Please follow your weekly and
monthly communications for the announcement of new programs coming on the horizon.
This year is already shaping up to be the “Year of the Member” here at Haig Point, with venues being restored for
bigger and better purposes. There will be a “Dinner for Pick Up” at the Grill Room/Mansion with choices such as three
assorted pizzas, two flavors of “Roasters” whole chicken and fried chicken, as well as a casserole of the day. Also,
we are adding “It’s All in Your Basket” grocery shopping program through our existing Club food and beverage
inventories. You will be able to purchase those hard-to-find or forgotten grocery items through your Club (cost plus
10% and 6% tax for food/cost plus 15% and 8% tax for beverage), which you may pick up at the Grill Room or ask
to have it delivered. Think of it as a “Boat-to-Door” service as we like to say here at Haig Point. To enjoy the grocery
program, simply call the Grill Room during operating hours at 843.341.8152, and we will do our best to fulfill your
order. (For specialty items, please allow two-three days’ notice.) For those of you choosing to eat in, you are able to
order from any (or all three) of our menus for takeout (during operating hours)!
Onto a slightly more important subject--reservations. It almost goes without saying that making reservations for
dining and special events is the most productive piece of information we can get from you as our Members!
It provides us with the knowledge to be ready for your arrival; to serve you; prep and prepare food for you in
proper quantities; and have the proper amount of staff available to serve you at the highest level you deserve.
It truly gives the staff and myself the BEST opportunity to create memorable moments for you and your guests, for
each and every dining experience that you will share with us. Please assist us in providing you with amazing services
by letting us know when you will be joining us to dine.
Things to look forward to--new Menus in the Grill Room for breakfast and lunch; at the Calibogue Club for dinner; and
for seaside dining at the Beach Club.
Lots of great things are on the horizon for our Members, and none of it would be possible without you. Your
unwavering commitment and support to all that is great here at Haig Point is exceptional, and through you we are
going make the rest of 2016 full of amazing services, special events and great social and community times for all to
enjoy. Remember, everything is possible here at Haig Point. That is what makes us different, because “We Believe in
Making a Difference!”
In closing, I wish to say we appreciate the opportunity to serve you, your families and guests each and every day.
We also appreciate your feedback and input on the products and services provided so we may provide you with an
exceptional and memorable experience here at Haig Point.
We look forward to seeing and hearing from you in the very near future.
Sincerely Yours,
Chef Jim McLain
