I contacted a P.R agency, Samphire
Communications which consists of a
group of woman whom specialsise in
resturaunt and food marketing.
They were generous enough to
give me a bunch of photgraphs and
recipies of their clients work that I
could use as long as I were to credit
the resturaunts.
The layout to the left has
a fairly corporate feel to
it, however the illustaration of the avacodo breaks
the image up with a wild
splash of line and colour
this is to help illustrate to
the audience the message
that the writer is trying
to convey which is that
people using avocados in
recipies such as a cheese
cake is madness!
I have scanned the following layouts from “Delicious”, which is a hugely succsesful food magazine
predomintly foccused on recipies and the latest food
stories.
The large quoation mark,
paragrah is an effective
way to quickly grab the
attention of the audience
so they will delve deeper
into the article. Something I will keep in mind
when Im constructing my
inital layouts.
To the left is a double page
spread of a reciipe on how
to make won ton dumplings .
The visual guide on the left
is important for a coplex
recipie such as this, with
many small intericate details. It also more astetically
pleasing than two pages of
pure text.
Figure 1. is another peice i found within
delicious magazine which I was orginally
drawn to because of its simple but effective
composition showcasing the rich and
rustic colours of winter. Figure 1 as well as
figure 2 have white copy placed ontop of
unclutted photgraphy this enable the text
to be legible by the reader but also saves
the image from being covered up by a text
box. This is something I will experiemnt
whith my initial ideas.
I found Figure 3 (an advert for Lurpak) in
the a copy of Time Out magazine.
I am fond of the composition of the open
sanwich wich is composed in a way that
resembles a volcano erupting. This is
effective way of aiding the mesage of the
advert “think light and improvise” in the
sense that a volcano is purley sponatious.

Figure 2.
Figure 5 is advertising muller light
greek style yougurt to a health
consious market. The designer has
used mimicry to develop a foregin
feel to the product this has been
achived by having a greek meander
border the advistisment as well as
using a greek style font for some of
the copy.
The designer has used sex (two good
looking people in beachwere ) to
apeal to an older audience.
Figure 5.
figure 6 has used scale to exagerate
the USP of having a very small
amount of ingredients to make up
their product. This is an effective
stratergy because it use s hummour
to entice their potential customers.
Figure 4 has used design heiracy to howcase
the most important element of this article (the
falafel) this has been achied by its placemnt
in the middle with small peices of copy
sourounding it as well as the scale of the fallafel
wrap.
Figure 7 is a bright double spread page which is
asthicaly pleasing to me due to its colour pallet
that has been plucked from spring which in fact
is what the spread is about.

May Millergan is a freelance illustrator whom
has produced these beautiful hand drawn
illustrations aided by a natural colour pallet for
print, books and other publications.
Bellow is an info-graphic based on coffee from
around the world. Tim Bradford has used a colour
pallet influenced by the subject matter (coffee)
combined with colour that are to be expected
to be on a piece of flat design work. I like the
way he has structured the graphic in a way that
resembols the the layers of the earth such as the
crust, mantle, outer core and inner core which is
obviously where coffe comes from (the ground).
Due to his flat design style of inforgraphic he
has been able add lighten up and add humur to
information that could be seen as a little dull.
