Touring park wardens
conservation
A beautiful invader among us
Beautiful grasses arranged in large milk churns can often be
seen adorning balconies as we hike through villages. If you
are thinking about making such arrangements yourself, you
should know that, in many cases, the grass used is the exotic
common reed (Phragmites australis) that is currently invading
the Outaouais wetlands and threatening the biodiversity of the
Parc National de Plaisance.
The negative impact on wetlands is now well documented.
When it invades the wetlands, the reed takes over the entire
area so that no other plant can survive or take root there. This
obviously will have major repercussions on the fauna already
there. Moreover, the reeds make the agricultural land they
invade unusable, increase the risk of fire, dangerously obstruct
the view of drivers along roadsides, hamper recreational
activities, etc.
Can you help stop it spreading?
Once this reed has taken hold, it is extremely difficult to get
rid of it. Thus, the best thing to do is to avoid spreading it.
Seek advice from your local nursery when you are creating
wildflower arrangements. There are other grasses that are just
as pretty and, more importantly, harmless!
A challenge for the coming years
To conserve the biodiversity of the wetlands, the park will
implement various projects to control this aggressive invader.
However, without the help of the park’s neighbours and various
local stakeholders, the battle will be difficult to win. This is
why we are thanking you in advance for helping us protect this
jewel of Quebec’s natural heritage!
Form a group and experience a wonderful adventure
in a rabaska canoe on the majestic Ottawa River
and travel right to the heart of one of its marshes.
And during a well-earned break, sample one
of the area’s delicious local products.
For 14 years and older.
While hiking or biking, or even while eating your picnic, you might meet one of our touring park wardens.
They walk around during the summer to show you and talk to you about nature’s hidden treasures.
You can also share your discoveries with them!
Spring and fall activities!

REMINDERS
During your visit to a national park, you must always carry your entry fee receipt or your annual
entry card.
To preserve our natural riches, you are not allowed to remove any natural elements (animals, plants,
dead wood, rocks, etc.). Please also keep to established hiking trails to avoid trampling flora.
Animals find all they need to eat in nature. Feeding wildlife can be very damaging. Keep food or

We ask you to carry out all your garbage.
Domestic animals are not accepted in Québec’s national parks. However, guide dogs and service
dogs are admitted.
PILOT PROJECT AUTHORIZING DOGS
