We Want You to Stay But It’s Time to Go
Julie Carver, President /Principal
President/Principal Julie Carver made this formal address at
the Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday, May 29, 2010.
Good morning graduates, parents, families, faculty, staff
and guests. I am Julie Carver, the President/Principal of
Ursuline High School.
Class of 2010, I have but one word for you...stay! Please
don’t go. It has been an honor and privilege having
you at our two schools these past four years. And I
for one am not ready for it to end. I suspect you may
feel differently. I also suspect most of your parents
agree with me. Most, not all of you, know who you are and
are already planning your craft rooms or man caves.
Graduates, as a class you have humbled and inspired us with your academic achievements,
your dedicated community service, your athletic successes and your artistic talents. You
have earned an enormous amount of scholarships, close to four million dollars, won numerous
league championships and scholar team awards and entertained us with your acting, singing
and dancing.
You have also served all parts of our community from children through the elderly and worked
to protect our environment. You embody the missions of our two schools. But mostly, you
have humbled and inspired us with the way you carry yourselves. You have shown each other,
the faculty, staff and administration such kindness and respect and that, I believe, will be your
true legacy.
So if you stubbornly insist on leaving, at least we know that you will take your kindness and
compassion wherever you go. You will be wildly successful but equally if not more importantly,
you will be good people. We are proud of each and every one of you. Congratulations!

On behalf of the Counseling Department, I would like to congratulate both the parents and students for their
successes in the college application/admissions process as I know it was challenging at times. We have all
enjoyed guiding your daughters and working with you. We are extremely proud of our 129th graduating class
and their accomplishments. Below are a few exciting statistics about this class which represents the students’
hard work of these past four years.
•
•
100% our graduates are going to college
The Class of 2010 was accepted at 110 different institutions of higher learning: 52 out-of-state schools
and three International universities
• In the fall, this graduating class of 80 will enroll at 40 different schools in the United States and two
International universities in Rome, Italy and Victoria, British Columbia
• 82% of the students will attend four year schools and 18% will begin their education at a community
college with plans to transfer to four year institutions
• Our graduates were awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships for the first year of college and a total of
$4.8 million for renewable four year scholarships
Featured Graduation Speakers
"I’m honored to be associated .
with the hardworking, kind and
genuine people whom I call
friends. The way we invested
ourselves in our service projects,
the teamwork displayed in the
classroom and on the field and
the respect shown to each other
attests to our character. The Class
of 2010 has HEART. How we treat
others and how they respond to
us has defined us. Our education
reveals a great deal about who we
are and where we come from, and
will impact people we encounter
in college and beyond."
Excerpt from Michelle Stone’s
Valedictorian address.
“Each graduate has been .
challenged spiritually and .
academically, and encouraged to
participate in the community. .
It’s these challenges that have
made the experience great. But
these challenges could not have
been possible without the hard
working and loving individuals that .
surrounded us every day—the
communities of Ursuline and
Cardinal Newman high schools. You
have gone far beyond preparing
us for college—you have fostered
volunteerism, shown respect and
kindness, been understanding and
shown us how to ‘Be the change we
wish to see in the world.’” .
Excerpt from Olivia Turnross’
Co-Salutatorian address.
“We have reached out to our .
community, developed our .
talents, and learned who and
what we can become. Today, we’re
ready for a shift in our lives. These
four years of high school have
given us a sturdy foundation upon
which we can shape the rest of our
lives. Our strange, magical little
world of high school is about to be
forever altered. Our futures are a
mystery, the directions of our lives
still unclear. Whatever happens
to all of us, we are united in the
fact that we are each a part of the
Ursuline and Cardinal Newman
graduating Class of 2010.” .
Excerpt from Elizabeth Davison’s
Co-Salutatorian address.

Take 5 Cyndi Niendorf, Director of College Counseling
Athletic Director and History Teacher Rich Herrmann and Director of College Counseling Cyndi Niendorf

to learn more about them and their views. Mr. Herrmann’s Take 5 is in the Athletic section.
Question
1
What brought you to Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa?
I grew up in Montana and graduated from Montana State University. My passion for adventure took me to
Los Angeles, Japan and eventually to Sonoma County. I spent five years in the international school system
in Yokohama, Japan where I taught at the first Catholic girls school in Japan. Living and working in Japan
was an incredible experience particularly since it was my first exposure to Catholic education and an all girls
school environment. Upon my return to America, I hoped that I would be able to work in another Catholic
girls school. In 1978 I was hired by Ursuline and the rest is history. Question
2
You have worked at UHS for over 30 years and you still have so much passion and incredible energy as Director
of College Counseling. What’s your secret?
I am blessed that I love what I do! When you love your work, the passion and energy come naturally. I have
always enjoyed working with students whether in the classroom, with extracurricular activities or in an
academic or college counseling setting. When I started at Ursuline, I was both a classroom teacher and the
Scheduling Coordinator. That evolved into serving as Academic Dean for over 20 years and now Director of
College Counseling. In the late 80’s, I created our Sister School Program, a short term exchange program
between St. Ursula High School in Sendai, Japan and Ursuline in Santa Rosa. The program existed for 13
years and 150 Ursuline students had an incredible cultural exchange experience because of it. Question
3
What are the counseling benefits that an Ursuline student receives over the four years and how does that
prepare her for higher education?
First, I must say that Ursuline has always valued and supported the counseling services that we provide. We are fortunate. Each girl has a personal guidance counselor who sees her at least three times a year or as
often as the student wishes. From Day 1, students enter an environment geared toward higher education
at Ursuline. We have our personalized Four Year Planning with each freshman and her parents. This Four
Year Plan is reviewed and updated annually. Our Academic Council and faculty are familiar with college
requirements. Because we are a small school, there is considerable communication between counselors
Full of school spirit and counseling knowledge, Mrs. Niendorf
and faculty as students are supported and guided academically, spiritually and personally. In the spring of proudly wears her Ursuline spirit shirt
the junior year, each girl and her parents meet for Pre College Planning. From there, we assist each student
and their parents with every step of the college application process and help them with the complicated and constantly changing world of college admissions.
Question
4
What’s important for students to keep in mind when evaluating colleges and selecting colleges to apply to?
There are over 2,300 four year colleges and 1,000 community colleges in the U.S. Being a global society, students can also consider colleges in Canada, Australia,
New Zealand, England, Scotland, Ireland and International colleges in Europe. The most important factor for success and happiness in higher education is the “fit” or
“match” of the school. During spring semester, Ursuline juniors complete a College Match Project helping them to self identify or confirm what is important to them
in a college. We guide the student in researching schools that would be a good fit for her specifically. Each student is unique. It makes no difference whether a student
goes directly to a four year college or begins at a community college with plans to transfer. Our students have the tools to be successful in their academic endeavors
whatever they may be.
Question
5
What is your most favorite part of your job?
Hands down it is the people: other colleagues, students and parents. Because of Ursuline’s small, caring environment we become well acquainted with our students
and their families. It is gratifying when writing college recommendations to truly know each student. Thanks to the value Ursuline has always placed on counseling,
it is a bonus to be given the time to provide very personalized services to our students and their parents.

The Best of Ursuline—College Counseling
By Kathleen Kelly, Co-Director of Admissions and Ursuline Parent, Past and Present
Angeline Kelly, Class of 2011
with sister, Laura, Class of
2006 at Laura’s graduation
from Chico State this past May
I didn’t know what to expect as my
daughter and I walked through the doors
of Ursuline eight years ago. What we’ve
experienced has far exceeded my .
expectations. My daughters have been
valued and met exactly where they are
on their individual education paths. They
have been counseled to find their voice
and to seek their ideal educational fit. .
They have been offered information and .
guidance, the foundation for them to
develop a vision of what they can achieve
after high school. All of this started almost immediately at
the beginning of freshman year as we sat down as a family and created
a four year education plan that would end in the best fit for college. What I remember most vividly from these initial four year planning
meetings is that the counselor talked directly to my daughter. As we left
these initial meetings I could tell each daughter had “gotten it,”—this
was the beginning of four years where she was the leader. This was her
education. As sophomore year rolled around, this same plan was revisited. Grades
were discussed. Plans for improvement were outlined. Next semester
courses were reviewed. Stretch goals were considered. Activities on and
off campus were evaluated. Changes were made or not. The beginnings
of thoughts and ideas about potential college choices were weighed. The counselors had begun to plant the seed and it was starting to grow. As an added bonus, the girls spoke to me about how much they felt
listened to by their counselors. If there was a problem with a teacher or
another student, the counselors were there to listen and help sort it out. The counselors were their advocates. Junior year was a more serious discussion when we met for our planned
counseling meeting. Grades were discussed; college choices and the best
choice of courses for a strong schedule in senior year were talked about. The process for submitting college recommendations and applications
were reviewed. At home we talked about potential college choices
and SAT scores. As I look back on the incredible counseling provided by
Ursuline High School I feel blessed. Most importantly, by senior year
we were coached and educated about the process for submitting college
applications. I remember hearing friends talk about how confusing and
complicated the college application process was. I didn’t and haven’t
shared that same frustration. Thank you Ursuline for leading my .
daughters to success!
Ursuline Counseling, the Value and the Fit

Ursuline, help families tremendously by reducing the stress and anxiety
over the college admissions process. It’s been my family’s experience

By Kaitlyn Le Baudour
Kaitlyn on her Ursuline graduation day
I’m Kaitlyn Le Baudour, also known as Bucky around
Ursuline and now at my university campus as well. A junior at Wheaton College, I am a Spanish major
and a member of the Women’s Varsity Soccer team. I’ll complete a summer internship with my Church
in Illinois this summer, but most importantly I am
smiling.
My time at Ursuline was highly focused. I .
challenged myself to be the best I could be with .
the goal of having many college choices. The .
teachers, counseling staff, librarian and others
fostered this goal. Tutoring sessions at 7 a.m. in
Calculus and Physics were always available; I was
challenged to actually read Crime and Punishment,
The Scarlet Letter, Pride and Prejudice and many
other classics. Emphasis on service, while often a
hassle, developed in me the discipline to make .
others a priority. Ursuline is responsible for
unforgettable things in my life, many which came
at a cost. I did not have as much time for building
friendships like some of my peers in between .
soccer, leadership, tutorials and homework. Because of the focus and work during my four .
years at Ursuline, I did get to choose my college,
but more importantly, where I wanted to be
molded, crafted, influenced and fine tuned for the
next four years of my life. Wheaton College is an
institution filled with people who love God, just

like me, and keep me accountable to that most
important relationship in my life.
So, I love God, I love soccer, I love Spanish, I love my
friends, I love my College. I am smiling. Ursuline is a
big part of why I am the way I am today and that is
really what it is all about! Editor's note: Kaitlyn graduated
from Ursuline in 2008 and was the Ursuline Girl Award winner.

Caterina Balletto, Timber Price, Theresa and Lauren Forsell on Ursuline’s patio
Nothing was boring here. Every single day was
exciting. I came to Ursuline in the beginning of
the second semester. My host dad drove me up to
Ursuline and my first impression was, “Wow, this
is so huge!” I walked through the doors and a nice
blonde lady named Kathleen Kelly gave me a white
Ursuline polo. I was so nervous and I didn’t know
where to go. A lot of girls introduced themselves
to me and asked me who I was. I heard so many
names that I couldn’t remember any of them .
afterwards! One girl named Theresa Mateo showed
me my way to my first class. Everybody was so
helpful but I was really shy. It was hard at first but
I quickly made new friends and then the school
didn’t seem quite so big anymore. Everybody knows everybody and it was like a
big family where everyone watches out for one
another. It is such a nice school. The teachers are so
wonderful. My favorite teachers were Mr. Kamplain
and Madame Preyale. One of the coolest things at this school was the
high technology and the fact the Ursuline has its
very own library! In the library there are lots of
computers, maybe twenty for everyone to use. In
every class there were computers for the teachers,
as well as a white smart board. This was so cool for
me to see. I LOVED GOING TO URSULINE. Every week there was
something new happening. Sometimes there was
free dress, a dance event, a show, a holiday or a
mass. All of the girls made me feel so much a part
of things and right at home. I found wonderful .
friends that I will always remember: Timber, Lauren, Matilda, Mackenzie and Julia. I am so sad that I
have to leave. All I have to say is Ursuline was great!
I’m passionate about horses! .
I ride western, competing in
barrel racing, poles and goat
tying with the CHSRA .
(California High School Rodeo
Association). Most people
don’t know this sport exists in
schools and that anyone can
join. Colleges such as Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo have rodeo
teams and offer scholarships
if chosen for their team. The
events that I compete in are
speed events. At the end of
the season in May, the top
five in each event go on to the
State Finals and from there the
Nationals. I have two horses for
barrels and poles, Flicka and a
back up horse, Tanner. Flicka .
is my main horse. We ran the
fastest time in barrels at the
State Finals last year. To be
competitive in high school
rodeo, takes a lot of dedication,
lessons and practice. During
the summer I stay tuned up
by competing in the Northern
California Junior Rodeo and
numerous jackpot barrel races. 17

By Shelby Deffterios, Class of 2013
For the past eight years, my second home hasn’t
been a soccer field or a basketball court like most
teenagers, but it has been the ice arena. Figure
skating has become the sport I live and breathe
for. Waking up at 5:00 in the morning isn’t exactly
a warm wakeup call, but I do it because that’s the
sport I have chosen to dedicate myself to, along
with dancing. Over the past eight years, I have
come by hardships and frustrations just like other
athletes who compete but I have also had many .
accomplishments in my eight years of skating. I have competed in national and international
competitions throughout the western United States
and qualified for Showcase Nationals for the United
States the past four years. Skating is not only a
sport, but a part of me and I am very proud of my
accomplishments. I hope to pursue my skating far
into the future.

1. Back to the 80’s—
Musical Memories Forever
By Tina Traboulsi, Class of 2011
Doing this musical was by far the best experience of my
junior year. I would constantly find myself looking forward
to going to all of the rehearsals after school, especially the
dance rehearsals because all the students would help each
other out with the difficult choreography. The environment
at the rehearsals was very friendly and very cooperative. Dan
Saski is a great director. He wanted to make Back to the 80’s
a wonderful experience for us and he succeeded! Justin and
Brigit also did an amazing job in teaching all the students
the music and the choreography. They really helped us work
as a team. In my opinion, hanging out, singing, acting, and
dancing with friends is the most fabulous experience a
student can have. Making a successful musical is truly a
collaborative effort and it requires a tremendous amount
of work. Now every time I hear an 80's tune I think of
all my friends from the musical and what a great time
we had together.
2. Mother Daughter—
Flare and Fashion
By Jacqueline Payne, Class of 2012
Mother-Daughter this year was an overwhelming
success due in part by a dedicated sophomore
Student Council, a fashion show and a tremendous
amount of hard work and support. The Council
wanted to change up this event by showcasing
mothers and daughters doing something fun
together. Belden Long and I, along with our moms,
spearheaded the idea to have a fashion show.
With the help of Santa Rosa boutique stores The
Competitor and Pink and Punch, we had outfits for
moms and students. It turned out to be a beautiful
day at John Ash Restaurant where the event was
held. The grounds provided an incredible backdrop
with fine food and a touch of technology with drop
down automatic video screens. Some students and
moms were reluctant to model at first, but it was
fantastic that everyone had fun striking a pose.
Belden and I even cart wheeled down the runway!
3. The World History Trials—
Not Just the Facts
By Caterina Balletto, Class of 2012
The World History Trials were a great learning
experience. Each team member of every team
spent hours of hard work preparing for the trials,
and their hard work really paid off! All of the
sophomore students were super prepared, and
serious, which was what made the trials fun.
My favorite part about the whole experience was
learning history in a new way. This was great
because it was an alternative to the regular style
of teaching. Thank you Mr. Herrmann and Mr. Allen!
Editor's note: The World History Trials is an out of
classroom learning assignment for sophomore
students where the students put the American
Revolution on trial in a real courtroom).
4. The Prom
By Lauren Gibson, Class of 2010
5. New Year, New Food
Prom this year was a fun and
memorable event. We arrived at
the Prom after a bus ride and were
adorned with leis and walked into the
"Beach" which was the theme of the
dance. There were many casino-like
activities such as pool and blackjack
games as well as places to play ping
pong and dance. I was honored to be
named Prom queen and I will always
remember sharing a fun night with
my friends. I think overall Prom was
a success and everyone enjoyed
the festivities.
By Emily Chapman, Class of 2011
By Kara Chandler, Class of 2013
At the beginning of the year, Ursuline welcomed
a new group of people to our school, the staff
from Epicurean Group contracted to work in
the Café Merci. In October, Epicurean Group
welcomed my mom Mary as an employee.
Ever since Epicurean started, they have cooked
up some of the most wonderful meals for the
students at both campuses. The food always
tastes great! From pancakes at break to tostadas
at lunch and even smoothies after school, they
always seem to catch our cravings. My personal
favorite is the clam chowder in a bread bowl.
Yum! Other favorites among the students are
pizza, quesadillas, pasta and hamburgers. Our
wonderful cooks and staff (Tom, Kurt, Stephanie,
Mary, Desiree and Alex) do a great job. Thanks
so much!
7. “Choices” Assembly—
An Eye Opener
6. Dino-mite Elections
By Maeve Sheeran, Class of 2012
At Ursuline, student class elections are one of
the many fun experiences that happen on
campus. It’s a time where you get to really
express whatever you want. During the past two
years, I’ve been involved in the student elections.
My friend and I have been partners both years.
We decided to go all out for this election and
we dressed up in dinosaur suits and we sang a
reworded version of the Village People’s song,
Y-M-C-A. This definitely was a time I was glad
I attended an all girls school. Because we put
ourselves out there, my friend and I won the
election! It was the most memorable moment for
a lot of girls in the sophomore class.
We thought we would be having a boring lecture when we
were unexpectedly called into an assembly. This assembly was
definitely different and caught many students’ attention. A
younger guy stood before us giving us his views on sexually
active teens and chastity. Whoa! We saw all of our teachers’
faces in the gym and at first it was awkward to listen and talk
about sex in front of our teachers. It was nice that the speaker
wasn’t catering to the older generation’s views but giving us
his insight on chastity with a humorous and light attitude.
The students thought he was really funny and he was easy to
relate to because he used real life examples. He didn’t sugar
coat anything and told it like it was which made the kids
respect him even more. While talking with classmates after
the assembly, I noticed that many had taken what the
presenter said to heart and were reexamining their life choices.
Editor’s Note: Renowned chastity speaker and author Jason
Evert presented to both Ursuline and Cardinal Newman
students this past semester.

Admissions on the Move
Our Catholic Partner Schools are #1
by Kathleen Kelly and Lisa Ormond, Admissions
The Admissions Department strives to work
closely with our Catholic “partner” elementary
schools. Girls that have been educated at these
Catholic institutions have the foundation for an
especially successful transition into high school
at Ursuline. We are interested in reaching out
to all of the Catholic schools, but this past year
was one that brought a new closeness and
community with St. Rose, St. John’s and St. Eugene’s elementary schools. Partner School Tuition Agreement
In May, the Ursuline Board of Trustees adopted
a tuition reduction policy effective immediately.
for students of full-time faculty and staff at the
local Diocesan elementary schools. For 9-12 .
grade, these families will receive a 50% tuition
reduction for their daughters’ education. The
following schools will benefit from this new
policy: St. Eugene’s, St. Francis Solano, St. Helena, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary of the
Angels, St. Rose, and St. Vincent de Paul.

By Alice Meyer, Link Crew Advisor
I noticed something written on one of student restroom walls recently,
a restroom I have known since I was a student twenty years ago. Even
though the print was small and written in blue pen, it stuck out because
“graffiti” (if you could even call it that) is nonexistent at Ursuline High
School. When I stopped to really look at it closely, I was touched. It read:
“Bye my Ursuline sisters, I will miss you” punctuated with a heart. I
remember feeling this same way when I graduated from Ursuline in
1994. What a gift to not only graduate with “sisters” but to know that
hundreds of other students who stay behind are your “sisters” too. .
What started this idea that once an Ursuline student, forever an .
Ursuline sister? Ursuline’s LINK Crew is an integral part of creating those student .
bonds and connections between students/sisters in all grades. LINK is a

leadership group made up of 25
junior and senior students who
are responsible for welcoming
new sisters (new students) into
this community. It’s been a part
of Ursuline for over 10 years. LINK members understand

Winter/Spring Athletics
Take 5 By Rich Herrmann, Ursuline Athletic Director
Rich Herrmann was selected 2009-2010 Co-Faculty of the Year by his peers. He also recently
was honored by the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce as the 2009-2010 Top Local High School
Educator. We talked with Rich to learn more about him and his views.
Question 1
Why did you become a teacher?
My original goal was to be a football coach. I interviewed a UCLA coach when I was an
undergrad and he told of how he started as a high school teacher and coach. It was then that
I began to teach/coach in high school sports. It was through these experiences that I realized
that I loved teaching. Good coaches are generally good teachers and vice-versa.
Question 2
What did you coach and why did you stop?
I coached a variety of sports in the last 33 years. I started in football, but I also coached
basketball, baseball, track, cross-country, wrestling, and weight training. As I said, my
original goal was to coach at the college level. I did have a chance to be a Graduate Assistant
at Stanford in 1982 and 1983. It was then that I decided that I wanted to concentrate on
athletics at the high school level. I liked the purity of the sport at the high school level. From
there many of the decisions I made career-wise were related to my family that was growing
to five children. I stopped coaching high school football in 2003 when we moved to Hidden
Valley Lake.
Question 3
What is your vision for Ursuline Athletics?
There is a great future ahead for Ursuline Athletics! There is a strong tradition that needs to
be brought back to the forefront, including connecting with the former athletes who have
gone on to compete in college. Athletics is an important part of the whole experience of
education and of high school. It is important to give the program the attention equal to what Rich Herrmann and Ursuline Board of Trustees
we expect the athletes and the coaches to make. It is a commitment to give it your very best President Brad Pighin
in everything you do. For me, I would like us to be looked at as the model program in the area,
in our division and in the state. Question 4
What is needed next?
There needs to be a concerted effort to provide the athletes with the facilities that they need to compete. We need to put into place a newly structured
Booster organization, and a plan to upgrade the facilities and fields. This is something that we are currently working toward and hope to see in the next
few years.
Question 5
What is the new Ursuline Frosh “No Cut” Policy and why did you initiate it last year?
The new frosh policy is that any frosh athlete that tries out for a sport will not be cut if they make the effort to complete the coaches’ requirements. This
is to allow the frosh athlete the chance to try a sport that they may not have played, or a chance to compete and be a part of a team in their first year at
Ursuline. We want the most participation possible because we are convinced of the value of athletics in the students’ development. This new policy led to
the development of the frosh Volleyball team last fall.

for the second year in a row. Also, Ellery
was honorable mention All-League in
basketball while playing with a leg injury,
and was the starting goalie on the lacrosse
team until she had to undergo surgery. In addition, Ellery excelled as a
scholar in the classroom as was exemplified by the fact she qualified as a
scholar athlete all four years that she attended Ursuline. In fact, she maintained a 4.0 GPA as a senior
while competing in her three sports and
two of the sports teams she was a member .
of were NCS Scholastic Championship Teams.
Here are a few additional honors of Ellery’s:
team captain for five of her eight varsity

Below is a partial list of Michelle’s numerous honors and awards:
2010 Meet of Champions in Berkeley-1st Place
When Michelle Stone won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF)
Scholar Athlete of the Year at the end of spring, it seemed only fitting
that her incredible honor should be highlighted in the FOCUS magazine. Quietly, Michelle garnered this top athletic scholarship award with
many on campus and in our own community not fully understanding
its significance. Nominations for this prestigious $5,000 award were
received from 1,494 high schools in California. Only one other athlete
(male or female) in Sonoma County has ever won this award since its
inception in 1982. Being humble as she is, Michelle wasn’t the kind
of person to make a stir. However, as a tribute, we want to vault her
incredible accomplishments into the spotlight one last time to give her
an Ursuline Bear “high five” for the amazing athletic and scholastic feats
she’s achieved while attending this school. Congratulations Michelle on
the many achievements you worked so hard to earn and most definitely
deserved. We will miss you!

Our Amazing Athletes
Tribute Michelle Stone, Class of 2010
Ursuline’s First Ever CIF Scholar/Athlete of the Year
Bruce Taylor & Michelle with their CIF awards
Parting Words
By Michelle Stone, Class of 2010
This year's track season was a memorable one. I improved the Ursuline
pole-vault record of 11'10" by 5 inches, ending my high school career
with a personal best of 12'3". I set meet records at the Santa Rosa
All-City Meet and at the NCS Finals, and placed first at the NCS Meet
of Champions at UC Berkeley, qualifying me for the state track and
field championships in Clovis. In May, I was named the Press Democrat
Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for large schools and, later, I was
honored by the California Interscholastic Federation as the 2010
top Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for the state of California. In
Sacramento, I met representatives from CIF and Farmers Insurance,
who have been a generous sponsor of high school athletics for years.
Bruce Taylor from Palma High School (the boys' recipient) and I were
escorted to the State Assembly and Senate floors to be presented with
resolutions from our respective assemblymen and senators. We were
given a private tour of Governor Schwarzenegger's offices and were
honored at a luncheon attended by our parents, coaches and school
representatives. It was an exciting and special way to end the season. It's
hard to imagine these past four years without track. My relationships
with my teammates, coaches and competitors were a central part of
my high school experience. I will miss the camaraderie and enthusiasm
of the CN/UHS team and the incredible support from Sonoma
County's high school athletic community.

Frosh, JV and Varsity Basketball
By Jeff Paul, Coach
Ellinora Filice
Rilee Hakola
The 2010 varsity basketball team had a solid season
despite a challenging season that included injuries
to key players. The varsity team led by seniors
Ellery Young, Tara Puccioni and Brontë Sheahan
finished a tough preseason at 6-6 finishing up with
a solid win against a Marin Catholic. The Bears
felt confident heading into league play that they
could defend their 2009 league title. They played
hard and finished league tied for 3rd place despite
Tara Puccioni’s season ending injury. The Bears
moved onto the NCS play-offs and won their first
NCS play-off game since 2004 before losing their
final game to McKinleyville. Five Bears earned
All-League honors: Brontë Sheahan and Jordan
Henry—first team, McKenzie Mangino—2nd
team and Ellery Young and Tara Puccioni honorable
Brontë Sheahan
mentions. Brontë Sheahan and Jordan Henry were
also selected to the Press Democrat’s first team
All-Redwood Empire team.
Ursuline’s junior varsity team started out slow but
it didn’t take long for the coaches to get the team
focused and playing together. The JV Bears ended
their season with a 21-5 record and were league
champions for a 2nd year in a row. The freshmen
team had a good season as well. The freshmen
team jumped off to a great start winning some
tough games against good teams. Although they
were unable to defend their 2009 league title,
the team never gave up and played with heart
throughout the season.
Lacrosse
By Matt Eaton, Coach
Marissa Greenband and Marigrace Scrivanich
The 2010 Ursuline Bears lacrosse season started .
with more than 30 girls. This was my first year .
coaching Ursuline’s lacrosse team, and this team
met all challenges they faced with a great attitude. I found tremendous joy in coaching the girls and
watching their skills develop. After each game, I
would congratulate the other team’s coaches on their
win/loss, and after each game I was complimented
on the athleticism and skill set of my players. It was
great motivation for the girls to be recognized by the
other teams since this was Ursuline’s first year in the
MCAL league. Our biggest personnel loss was senior
Ellery Young due to leg surgery but sophomore Tricia
Baluyut stepped into goal and did an amazing job
with the team finishing with a promising 3-5 record. The best game of the season was our last which was
at home and was senior night. We beat University
High who made the playoffs with a 4-4 record. Our
team was just one win away from the playoffs—
next year we will be in title contention. Ursuline .
had three players make the MCAL 2nd team: .
Lauren Gibson, Lauren Hylbak and Erin Clark. .
Congratulations to this team for an incredible year!
Winter/Spring Athletics
Swimming and Diving
By Mark Hartman, Coach
Anne Marie Destruel
Maggie Leinen, Taylor Young, Allison Straus and Mackenzie Carl
For the Ursuline Swim and Dive Team it was both a championship .
and record breaking year. The Ursuline girls finished their dual meet
competition undefeated with a record of 8-0. The swimmers and divers
placed second at the NBL Championships
to Maria Carrillo ensuring a tie for the
league championship. It is the first
league championship for Ursuline in the
history of the school! Key to the team’s
success was its depth and strong .
contributions from all team swimmers
and senior diver Anne Marie Destruel
who took 2nd at the NBL .
Championships and 29th at NCS.
Maggie Leinen
Allyson Beach
The team was led by its two most valuable swimmers, sophomore .
Allison Straus, and freshman Taylor Young. Allison placed 3rd in the NBL
Championships in the 50 Free and 2nd in the 100 Free. Taylor placed 3rd
in both the 100 Breast and 200 IM. Both girls were on relays that set
Ursuline School records. In the 200 Medley Relay, Maggie Leinen and
Mackenzie Carl helped set a new school record and on the 400 Free Relay,
Morgan Edgar and Julia Personeni helped achieve a new mark as well. In addition, Taylor Young set new school records in the 100 Breast, 200
IM and the 500 Free. Taylor finished 7th in the 100 Breast at NCS, having
set a new school record in the prelims. Her school record in the 500 Free
broke a 28 year old record by gold medal Olympian, Jenna Johnson. Her
100 Breast time was the 37th fastest time in the country this year and
qualified her as a CIFNCS All American.
Track and Field
Erica Cunningham
Track and Field had
another historic run
in 2010. Finishing
with a 5-4 record
overall including a
3-4 record in the NBL,
there were some
memorable individual
performances. The
season started off well
for the Bears gaining
victories over Windsor,
Sonoma, Rancho .
Cotate, and Piner. .
In the end, the team lost some of its members due to injuries and other
unforseen circumstances. Seniors dominated individual performances,
including: Ali Nelson, Laura Fenton, Kaitlin Daniels, Jessica Blinman,
Megan McKellar, Britney Biagi, Jacqueline Balletto, Chelsea Booth,
and Michelle Stone. The team had some very competitive meets with
strong contributions by junior Erica Cunningham and sophomore Isobel
Moeller in the shot and discus. The relay team was consistent all year and
qualified for the Meet of Champions, along with Ali Nelson in the 100m
and 200m, Megan McKellar in the long jump, Kaitlin Daniels in the 300
hurdles, Erica Cunningham in the 800m and 1600m and Michelle Stone
in the pole vault. Michelle continued her dominance in the pole vault in
the Redwood Empire beating her own record of 11’10” plus setting the .
new standard at 12’3”. She competed in the State Meet at Clovis for .
the second year in a row.

Varsity Softball
By Mary Cooper, Coach
Haily MacDonald and Kaitlyn Wright
The Bears Varsity softball program completed a very successful season.
With strong leadership of the team’s only senior, Kaitlyn Wright and
junior, Haily .
MacDonald the .
team finished league
competition with
a .500 record and a
9 – 14 record overall. The Bears played
very competitively
at the Clark High
School Tournament
in Las Vegas playing
against Div. I and Div. II teams. The pitching
and shortstop duties
Megan Badger
were shared by Hailey
Eisenhauer and Haily
MacDonald, while returning players Kaitlyn Wright, Dayna McDaniel and .
Lindsey Taylor covered the outfield. Ali Beazell, Megan Badger and freshman
Madi Ortega completed the infield with Elissa Maloney covering the
catching duties. Izzy Licursi and Hailey DeLambert shared outfield .
duties. The team played their season in the spirit of the game: .
working hard, being competitive and having fun supporting each other. .
Congratulations to All League 1st team selections Haily MacDonald, .
Hailey Eisenhauer and 2nd Team selections Kaitlyn Wright and Madi Ortega.
JV Softball
The JV softball program
was resurrected after a
short hiatus. The team
was managed by 1st
year Head Coach Ray
Sterling, and his .
assistant also in his 1st
year, Ian Humber. Ray
came to Ursuline by way
of the Colorado Rockies,
while Ian played for .
an all-star team in .
Australia. The numbers
were strong as 19 girls
tried out for the team.
There was a solid group
of freshmen, along with a mix of
girls who were trying the sport for
the first time. One freshman with
experience was Melanie Duty who
had a solid year on the mound. The team showed a lot of progress
throughout the season. They had
striking spirit and enjoyed playing
with each other. Though the wins
were few, the joy was not. With
success in the Ukiah tournament
JVs on deck
where they finished third, and
then the fitting end of the season with a dramatic extra inning win over
Montgomery, it was great to have the JVs back.

Spring Visual and Performing Arts
On Stage in Spring—Visual and Performing Arts
By Monica Bryant, Fine Arts Department Chair
In the spring we celebrated our first ever Arts Alive Festival. Ursuline and
Cardinal Newman teachers banded together to showcase the creative
side of our students for a full week on campus. The week included five
successful events: Imagine That, the Visual Arts Exhibit; So Show Me,
the Student Performing Arts Show; the Student Film Festival, Night of
Drama, the drama open rehearsal and Poetry Night. Thanks to Ursuline
parent Noel Hansen’s efforts, the art exhibit had 16 new flats to display
all the visual art classes’ work: Studio Art, AP Studio Art, Design, Graphic
Design, Drawing, Painting and Photography, as well as art produced by
our students outside of these classes. Poetry Night was in Brescia Hall
which was transformed into a Bohemian coffee house for the young
poets. Many UHS and CN students stepped up to the mike to read or
recite their words. The Student Film Festival showcased four short films
produced for the event. The Night of Drama was a good experience
seeing an inside view of drama rehearsals—challenging and engaging
work! Dan Saski, the new drama teacher and director, sure brought out
the talent in our students! And So Show Me was fabulous, complete
with group performances, bands, dances, solo instrumental work and
great songs. The Cardinal Newman gym was transformed with the light
show and musical talent. Students visited Imagine That next to the .
gym during intermission. All the arts events together demonstrated
to students and the school community just how much we value the
creative works of our students and how alive the arts are at Ursuline .
and Cardinal Newman.

Update on Murals for the Redwood Gospel Mission Chapel
Working diligently on the mural are Audrey Abate, Natalie Andrews,
Caitlyn Rei and Indigo Bannister
Our ambitious project of creating murals depicting the Life of Christ for
the Redwood Gospel Mission is well on its way. We have been painting
canvas murals in Brescia Hall and the Ursuline Art Room this past year. When completed, the murals will be installed in the Chapel in Railroad
Square in downtown Santa Rosa. Students worked on the murals three
weekends in the spring and painted during Holy Thursday also as a
service project for the school. A summertime workshop happened
as well in mid July with hopes that the first phase of four murals will
be done by the end of September. Parents and students continue to
pour their energies into this project with sincere hearts. Thank you to
project leaders Lisa Skelly, Seong Brown and Anne Del Monte for their
continued commitment. When finished, we hope Ursuline and Cardinal
Newman will be proud of this contribution to our greater community. Anyone interested in helping with this project, contact Monica Bryant at
[email protected]. 33

The Dads' Club Finale
By Allan Henderson, Retiring Dad’s Club Grand Poohbah
Allan Henderson readying to pass
the “torch”
The last Dads' Club Dinner of the
year, rightly billed as The Last .
Supper, was hosted by Tim
Meinken and John Hazelwood. It was the passing of the torch
from Allan Henderson to the new
Grand Poohbah, Will Ivankovich. Over eighty dads were treated to
a spit-roasted pig, slow roasted by
Dads' Club Master Griller Jim Price,
who stayed the night to make sure
the fire was ready and the pig was
cooked properly. Steve Chia put out
a great menu of pulled pork and
pork tacos with all the trimmings.
Evening highlights included the passing of the torch from Allan
Henderson to Will Ivankovich and the presentation of the perpetual,
symbolic trophy of a crown on a stand commemorating the past Dads'
Club Presidents, starting with Bob Schwing, the Founder of The Dads'
Club. With much appreciation, CN Principal Graham Rutherford and
Ursuline President/Principal Julie Carver accepted a $20,000 check
36
which represented the monies that
the Dads' Club contributed to both
schools throughout the year by
way of dinners, donations and live
auction items. This amount doesn't
include the two barbeques recently
built on both campuses courtesy of
the Dads' Club. It has been a pleasure putting on
the Dads' Club dinners over the
past three years for such a great
group of guys, and I want to thank
all of the Alumni dads that return
year after year to support our kids. Lastly, a big manly hug to the guys
behind the scenes that take time out of their busy lives to do so much for
this group and our schools: the team of Jeff Bertoli, Steve Bates, Darrell
Bertacco, Jim Price, Will Ivankovich, Steve Chia and Joe McNeany. There
would be no Dads' Club without these dedicated people. Happy campers—Dad’s Club members and Ursuline and CN administrators with the symbolic $20,000 check
donated by the club to the schools
Note: The Dads' Club usually meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
which includes a tasty meal for the meager cost of around $15. All dads are invited.

Joe Reza. Joe’s daughters attended
Ursuline. Even after Joe’s final

young women and understood the
commitment it took to accomplish
the task. Joe was always willing
to help with a positive attitude. In his honor, the annual Joe Reza
Volunteer Award was established
this year. Two senior parents Diane
Bard and Donnie Young, who .
embody the spirit of Joe and
the St. Angela volunteerism
spirit, were selected to be the first
recipients. During the past four
years, Diane and Donnie simply
did everything from chairing the
Crab Feed to creating decorations
for various annual events that
could be used year after year to
coordinating the CBSL hospitality
room, sporting events and Bingo
Family Dinner. Their leadership,
dedication, insight and love for
their daughters and this school
community made a significant
impact that will be felt for years

mounting system in the country! Susan remembers her teachers fondly, specifically her Art, Home economics and English teachers. “Frank Lorenzo, my art teacher at Ursuline
encouraged me to believe in myself and to do what I love to do. My .
sewing/Home Economics Teacher Mrs. Anderson also influence on my

Although my mother wanted me to be a popular cheerleader it just
wasn’t who I was. But my teachers saw who I was and what I loved to

would see positive results. I thank him for that. I never realized how
their guidance was going to pay off later. Thanks, Ursuline.” .

Great teachers help create great students. In fact, research shows that
an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related
factor influencing student achievement, so it is critical to pay close
attention to how we train and support both new and experienced
educators.
A Religious Experience
This summer, religion teacher and CBSL Coordinator Judi Greaney led
a group of Ursuline students to a service retreat at Angela’s Piazza in
Billings, Montana. This Ursuline ministry serves Native American women
and children of the Crow Nation. Here at Ursuline, our teachers are working hard to share best practices,
review teaching skills, keep up-to-date on new technologies, and stay
open and aware of new teaching techniques. Following are some of
the activities they’ve been participating in while stepping foot outside
of their classrooms, as well as monthly in-services in which the entire
faculty participates.
Meanwhile, UHS’s campus ministry coordinator, Kathy Snodgrass,
completed her master catechist after finishing one more (very large)
paper this past summer. Mrs. Snodgrass also attended Catholic Congress
in March, where she learned engaging information that can be used in
religion curriculum, campus ministry events and CBSL. Reading across the Curriculum
Reading science text books requires different skills than reading works
of literature. So how do we make certain that our students understand
the nuanced reading skills they must acquire to be successful in college
classes and careers? Pam Devlin, a veteran English teacher and trainer
in Expository Reading and Writing courses, provided an enriching
workshop for all UHS teachers in March. Drama in the Classroom
Teachers Corey Lott and Alice Meyer got a shot of the dramatic when
they attended Exploring Points of View through Drama: Walking in
Another’s Shoes, a one day class offered through the Sonoma County
Office of Education this past February. Always up for the dramatic, Mrs. Lott enthusiastically brought these methods back to her classroom to
embark on fun pre-reading strategies for the book Nectar in the Sieve. Our Own Exploratorium
