The VCU Pep Band proudly and ably represented VCU throughout the NCAA Tournament.
At the Final Four championship in Houston, the VCU Pep Band won the pep band
competition.
January
1 – Snowball fights abounded after yet another snowfall.
2 – The School of Business Society annual TipOff event at a men’s basketball game always
draws a big, rowdy crowd.
3 – School of Dentistry hygienists show off their muscle and new white coats after the school’s
annual White Coat Ceremony.
February
4 – VCU Qatar students with Interior Design faculty working on a project.
5 – A student experiments with the state-of-the-art da Vinci Robotic Surgical System machine.
The system enables a minimally invasive option for complex and delicate surgical procedures.
6 – VCU Libraries provides areas for students to focus on their studies.
March
7 -- March Madness! The VCU Rams men’s basketball team ignited the campus (and the
nation) with its incredible performance in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, winning the
Southwest Regional title by defeating No. 1 ranked Kansas and making it to the Final Four
in Houston. Students were solidly behind the team all the way and showed their support.
8 – Students watched games at many locations. Many filled the Siegel Center to watch the
action en masse on a big screen.
9 – Students poured onto the streets around campus after the victories. The atmosphere in
the city was truly exhilarating.
April
10 –The annual Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k was held April 2, the same day as the Rams’
Final Four basketball game in Houston. In honor of the Rams’ success, the 10K was dubbed
the Rampede. Thousands showed up for the race wearing black and gold to show their
support.
11 – VCU Health System leaders and employees celebrate after being re-designated as a
Magnet hospital. The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations
for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing
practice. Consumers rely on Magnet designation as the ultimate credential for high-quality
nursing. Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Magnet is the leading
source of successful nursing practices and strategies worldwide.
12 – A beautiful day is just another good excuse to hang out on the wall outside the Shafer
Court Dining Center.
May
13 – VCU Theatre performed “Ain’t Misbehavin’” to sold-out audiences.
14 – The Art Foundation surface class is one of four studio classes for freshmen. Instructor
Charlotte Rodenberg wears the large mask beneath the credit sign.
15 – The May 2011 Commencement celebrated the academic achievements of about 4,500
students, including men’s basketball stars Joey Rodriguez (left), Brandon Rozell (center)
and Ed Nixon.
June
16 – The VCU School of the Arts’ programs ranks among the very best in the nation. Here, a
student prepares a lithographic plate in the studio at the Fine Arts building.
17 – VCU Qatar Day brings Qatar experiences to the Monroe Park Campus where a student
receives a temporary henna tattoo.
18 – The VCU Intercultural Festival at Monroe Park highlights the diverse nature of the VCU
student population including a dance ensemble wearing traditional Vietnamese attire.
July
19 – On the Monroe Park Campus, the main hangout for students is the University Student
Commons, which includes multiple dining options, lounges, a theater, large conference rooms,
ballrooms, a game center and offices. In addition, “Ramifications,” an interactive rams horns
sculpture designed by alumnus Timothy Blum (M.F.A.’92/A), was added in 2009. A new tradition
during New Student Orientation encourages students to walk by and touch the horns. Also,
visitors can stand at a certain spot in the plaza and take a picture so it looks like the subject has
horns. A series of such photographs are featured at the Richmond International Airport.
20 – Students on the MCV Campus enjoy studying in the recently renovated Hunton Student
Center. The MCV Alumni Association and the MCV Foundation partnered to donate $1
million for the renovations. Building features include dining options and an MCV Alumni
Association study lounge, which has colorful panels depicting the institution’s history.
August
21 – The MCV Campus dominates Richmond’s downtown skyline. The crane is located at the
construction site of the James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Medical Education Center,
scheduled for completion in spring 2013.
22 – Lobs and Lessons and the Center for Sport Leadership are lauded for teaching children
about character development and the importance of pursuing higher education as they
also learn about the game of tennis. The United States Tennis Association/Mid-Atlantic
Section awarded its 2010 Community Program of the Year to Lobs and Lessons and the
Center for Sport Leadership for hosting the Young Aces Open Tennis Tournament in 2011.
The tournament attracted 160 fourth- and fifth-graders from Richmond Public Schools.
23 – The VCU Medical Center’s Evans-Haynes Burn Unit, the oldest civilian burn unit in the
country, uses colored lights to distract children from the pain associated with treatments.
September
24 – The Scott House (1907–11), built for Frederic and Elisabeth Scott by the Richmond
architecture firm of Noland & Baskervill, at 909 W. Franklin St., is a stellar example of the
American Renaissance. Patterned after the Petit Trianon at Versailles, the mansion reflects
the grandeur and prosperity of Richmond’s early-20th century, when it was one of the
principal insurance and banking centers of the South. The upper floors are home to the
VCU Development offices, but the building hosts many events during the year.
25 – The Ram Spirit Walk, sponsored by the VCU Alumni Association, is the welcoming event
for VCU freshmen. Held in Monroe Park, freshmen are led by VCU cheerleaders to the
Landmark Theater for Convocation.
26 – The School of Social Work, located on Franklin St. near the Scott House, celebrates its 95th
anniversary in 2012. The school is ranked in the top 15 in the nation.
27 – Activity is always brisk outside Cabell Library on the Monroe Park Campus.
October
28 – The VCU Rice Center is located on 494 acres along the James River. A primary focus of
research at the site is on the science and policy of large rivers and their fringing riparian and
wetland landscapes, with the broad and scenic James River as the focal point of that research.
29 – VCU Qatar painting and printmaking student.
30 – VCU Health System Nursing Magnet Tree signifies the ANCC Magnet designation for
nursing excellence.
November
31 – Lights along Shafer Court.
32 – The School of Business hosts a networking program designed to introduce students to
business representatives.
33 – Salsa dancing lessons on Shafer Court.
December
34 – Saffron Hall at VCU Qatar.
35 – School of Medicine students at their White Coat Ceremony.
