Horse Sense
The clergyman Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) went to buy a
horse. The horse’s owner declared, “This horse is perfectly sound.
He can go at any gait, walk, pace, trot or gallop. He will work any
place you put him, and he will stand without hitching. He will
never bite nor kick. He is gentle, yet full of spirit. He goes when
you want him to go, and he stops when you want him to stop.”
Beecher looked the horse up and down with great admiration.
Then he said blissfully, “Oh, if only that horse were a member of
my church.”

Summer is slipping by at such a fast rate. It is hard to believe we are in August already. I wonder
why winter feels like it will never end and summer sails like an arrow through the air. I have decided
I would rather mow the lawn than shovel the driveway. If I could … I would throw the anchor out and
slow down the fast progression of summer, but alas I can’t.
Life at First Baptist is busy indeed. So many things are going on. The building program is progressing nicely. I often walk out and look at it, and realize that in that structure, many, many young boys
and girls will come to a saving knowledge of who and what Jesus Christ is. The lost will be found;
the hurting attended too, and the hungry fed. Not only that, the adults who help run the programs will
grow in their spiritual walk. Great blessings are ours! Thank –you Heavenly Father for seeing us,
thank you Jesus for loving us and redeeming us… thank you Holy Spirit for holding our hand and
guiding us….WE ARE GREATFUL.
This last week, several of the men in the Church went to Peoria and picked up a 3 door commercial
cooler and a 2 door commercial freezer to be used in our kitchen remodeling. Soon, we are going to
be purchasing a new double oven for the kitchen to help complement our existing cooking capabilities. Larry Johnson has designed a wonderful new floor plan for the renovated kitchen. You will love
it; I do. Thanks Larry.
Rebekah Montgomery has been busy getting the Awana program ready for implementation. Her heart
and energy is appreciated. She is still seeking a few workers; are you one of those that can help? If
so, please let her know. Be a blessing.
A few weeks ago we baptized 7 people and had one transfer membership to First Baptist, bringing a
total of 8 new members to our family. We are so pleased and honored to have you with us.
Our family night program continues to grow; our numbers are consistently ranging over the 125
mark. Both services on Sunday are being well attended. Praise God! During the course of a week,
there are about 170 different people that come through our doors to attend at least one of the three
services we offer. Isn’t that great?
Brothers and Sisters, as I close, let me refresh your memory concerning all the good things that God
has done for you. Let me remind you…You are loved…He loves you. You are watched over….by the
Holy Spirit and by angels. You are His and He is yours.

Many people have found comfort from a particular psalm during times of fear or apprehension. One
verse reads: “Those who love me, I will deliver; I will protect those who know my name. When they
call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble…” (NRSV). Which psalm contains those

Eunice Plummer, Duane Anderson and Dustin
Williams as an alternate. At the next business
meeting we will take care of the formalities of
adding this committee to our constitution.
We offer our deepest sympathies to the family of Ralph
Haga, Jr. on his passing on July 1. Ralph was a pretty special man; kind to all he met. He will be missed by
everyone, including his church family.

in my adult class” but the drug pusher on the street said, “Not even the threat of jail will keep me
from working with your children.”
We are also formulating a Kitchen Committee; a temporary Committee to oversee
the kitchen remodeling project. Those nominated to be on this committee are Renee
Reul, Jeff Goard, Terry Calhoun, Mary Hollingsworth and Pam Konstanty.

Before You Say, “I Can’t or I
Don’t. . .”
And some adults said, “We have to be out of town too often on the weekend” but the porno book
dealer said, “We’re willing to stay in town weekends, too, to accommodate your children”.
And some adults said, “I’m unsuited, unable to work with children or preschoolers” but the movie
producer said, “We’ll study, survey, spend millions to produce whatever turns kids on.”
A big thank you to Valerie Currier for
painting and redecorating the Ladies’
bathroom in the back of the church. It is
beautiful! Valerie—I know you are a
pharmacist but sometimes I think you
missed your calling as a decorator—first
you redecorated Dean Hall and now the
bathroom. Many thanks from your
church family!
And some adults said, “I could never give the time required to plan and go to teacher’s meetings”
but the pusher, the porno book dealer, and the movie producer said, “We’ll stay open what ever the
hours are necessary every day to win the minds of the kids.” So . . . the adults stayed in their classes and enjoyed the sweet fellowship and absorbed the good Bible study, and could go out of town
often on weekends, and were available to do whatever was good to do in place of teacher’s
meetings.
And when Sunday came, the children came to their classes and no one was there except the elders
going from one room to another trying to assure them that someone would surely come to teach
them. But no one ever came,- and the young children and preschoolers soon quit coming because
they had gone to listen to others who did care about the things they did and what went into their

Operation Christmas Child is gearing up for the 2014 season and we need YOUR help. Every Sunday from September 7 to November 9 we will be collecting items to fill shoeboxes. The items you choose must fit in an adult sized
shoebox and be for children ages 2-14. Please bring empty shoeboxes as well. At the bottom of the list are reminders of things to NOT include. ALL ITEMS MUST BE NEW!! Get the school supplies NOW while they are still
on sale!
Pork Chop Dinner
We will be having a Pork Chop
Dinner on Saturday, August 23 at
5:00—6:30 PM. The cost will be
$5.00 a meal and the money
raised will go towards the kitchen
project. Carry-outs will be available. Spread the word!
Vacation Bible School
Community Vacation Bible School will
begin by kicking off with a cookout and
registration at 5:00 PM on Sunday, August 3. Then VBS will continue on the
mornings of August 4—7 from 9:00—
11:15 AM all at First United Methodist
Church.
This year’s theme is “Wilderness Escape:
Where God Guides and Provides.” The
children will get to meet different Bible
characters as they travel back in Biblical
time.

There will be a Spinners Night with rootbeer floats
for those who are 50 and older on Saturday, August
16 at 6:00 PM. Bring a friend or two and join us for
a night of great fellowship and fun!

Awana Training
If you are interested in helping with our Awana program, there will be a training session on Sun., August 10 following the worship service. Please see
page 3 of this newsletter for more information.
Lets face it—not all the children who will come to Awana will
be able to afford it. Would you like to sponsor a child for a
year? For just $1.00 a week ($52.00 a year), you can sponsor a
child who is in need and you may change a child’s life when they
come to know and love the Lord. Let us know if you wish to
sponsor a child. You may sponsor more than one if you wish!
The
new GYM
building is coming along
nicely. We thank God for all of
our hard workers making this possible and
we also pray for the safety of those workers every
day. Bless Larry Johnson, Phillip Cox, Thaddeaus Blanks,
Jordan Hepner, Mike Rouch, Jeff Anderson, Steve Konstanty, Lynn Sutton,
Dustin Williams, and Jake Swearingen. Also, so much gratitude goes to Steve Larson
and Steve Bell for all of their help with the concrete work. We are so blessed!!
