EARLY YEARS & JUNIOR SCHOOL
Dear Parents,
We welcome you and your child to the new academic year within the Early Years and Junior School Programmes
at Chiswick House School. While we hope your children are enjoying their summer holidays, the school staff has
been busy preparing for the coming year. The new academic year will include new activities and ideas which
will excite our young pupils. We are constantly seeking ways of involving our pupils in their own learning thus
creating more independent and self- directed learners.
This newsletter will be highlighting the most important aspects which parents need to know about at the start
of this new scholastic year.
We look forward to an exciting and challenging year ahead!
Ms Anita

Ms Josianne Vella Zarb, who has retired after many years of service at Chiswick House School. Ms Josianne will visit
us once a week to assist with succession planning.
Ms Sharon Scerri this year is working on a new project First Steps together with Ms Kareen Borg Barthet. Many
thanks for your coordination and your commitment throughout 2011-2012.
Ms Diane Erasmi, secretary, who will be moving to Front Desk at St Martin’s College. We thank you for your
patience, dedication and for being always there for everyone.
Communication is vital!
Communication between home and school is extremely important to us. All teachers have an email address
([email protected]). Please use this efficient means of communication since teachers might not always be able
to answer your calls. Kindly allow 2 to 3 days for them to reply to your emails.
I look forward to meeting up with you throughout the scholastic year. Kindly contact Ms Rachel, Secretary, should you
wish to set up a meeting. I am also very happy to communicate with you by email. Kindly allow me 2 to 3 days to get back
to you.
We look forward to efficient and effective home-school traffic of ideas and feed back.

Summer Fun Club 2012
This year’s Summer Fun Club experience was a great
success. All the children enjoyed interacting with each
other through enjoyable and exciting activities.
The children created beautiful crafts and learnt teambuilding skills through their performing arts, music and
storytelling lessons. Cookery, pick a task, art, games,
taekwondo, fencing and ICT sessions were also favourites
with the children. Swimming lessons and water polo
sessions at the National Pool and our water play activities
at Chiswick House School were always a highlight.
The Wednesday outings included a fitness club with
professionally trained instructors, a healthy eating
programme as well as a kids’ gym and the all-time favourite
- the bowling alley. Kayaking, basketball, Splash and Fun
and the cinema were other events that the children really
enjoyed. The swimming gala at the National pool and the
end of summer party will be wrapping up a wonderful
2012 summer school experience.
Many thanks Ms Celia for your Coordination, and all the
teachers and helpers for providing our pupils with another
wonderful experience.
Congratulations are in order….Well Done pupils!!
Throughout scholastic year 2011-2012 the school was informed of some of our pupils’ successes during the curricular
and extra-curricular activities which they participated in.
Well Done Sean Micallef (Junior 4)
In November 2011 Sean took part in the Karate National
League and won a gold medal. In March 2012 he took part
in the National Championships where he once again placed
first in his category. This March 2012 he took part in an
Open Championship in Cumbria, UK, where he competed
in the Under 12 against athletes from UK, Wales, Scotland
and Ireland. He took part in 3 categories (individual, pairs
and team Kata) and did us proud by once again winning 3
gold medals. Well Done Sean!! Sean is presently training for
another competition which will be held in Basel Switzerland
this coming September. We wish you the best of luck!
Naqra x’Taqra Kompetizzjoni: Rebbieha
Anne Grima (Junior 5)
We also congratulate Anne Grima on her success this
scholastic year. Anne took part in a competition promoted
at CHS at Christmas time. The competition was connected
with the series of books about ‘Jake Cassar’ by Clare
Azzopardi. Well Done Anne....Happy Reading!
Francesca Curmi (Junior 5)
This July Francesca took part
in the under 10 and under 12
categories in an International
tournament at the Weibe
Baren Wannsee Tennis Club
in Berlin. She fared extremely
well and reached the finals in
both events. She is currently
on a 3-week training camp in
Belgrade, Serbia which will also
include participation in another
international tournament in
Banja Luka, Bosnia. Good luck
Francesca!
Science Art Contest – Emily Ripard
(Junior 5) – Brava!
We are also very proud that Emily took part in the Science
Art Contest and won first prize. She was awarded her prize
during the NSTF Science Awards Night held on Friday 27th
April at Xrobb l-Ghagin, Marsaxlokk.
Well Done Emily....you too have made us proud!
Parents please feel free to let us know about your children’s success stories so that these too may be celebrated
throughout the scholastic year.

Year Planner and Autumn Term Calendar
Please refer to the year planner in order to block the days during which your presence at school would be appreciated.
The Autumn Term Calendar will give you a clearer picture of all the important dates to look out for.
The First Day of School
Class Lists – All pupils will get to know their new class mates and their teachers on the first day of school. During assembly
pupils will join their new peers and enjoy a number of activities with them. Apart from this, a number of team building
exercises and ice-breaking activities will also be at the core of our first week of the school’s programme.
On the first day please remember to send your children to school with the following:▪▪
▪▪
▪▪
▪▪
School Bag with a keychain and name to help distinguish it;
Packed Lunch – please remember that we will continue to emphasize our Healthy Food Policy and we recommend
items such as sandwiches, vegetable or pasta salad, fruit and water. No fizzy drinks or drinks in tin cans are allowed
in the school;
Full Summer uniform and school cap. The cap is to be worn when pupils are at assembly and out during break;
Junior 2 to 5 pupils may bring a pencil case with them.
Where to go on the first day of school

Info for Parents
Healthy Eating
Please remember to adhere to the Healthy Eating Policy
when preparing your child’s lunch. Please avoid sending
foods which are laden with sugars, sweeteners or fats as
well as processed foods. Eating well supports the children’s
level of attention and concentration in the classroom.
Kindly also supply your child with enough drinking water
as the weather during the initial weeks of school is still
warm.
Medical Information
On the first day of school the class teachers will give you a
medical form which needs to be filled in. Please return to
the class teacher by Friday 5th October 2012.
Whole School Screening
Junior 1 - 5 (EY3 - PY5)
During this scholastic year we will be taking the initiative
to screen all pupils throughout Chiswick House School. The
aim of the screening process is to verify that all pupils at
Chiswick House School are progressing age-appropriately
in literacy development. The tests used are standardised
and allow for early identification of pupils needing support
in reading and spelling. Should scores need further
investigation further testing may be recommended for
6
Early Years
the child. Under such circumstances the parents will be
contacted and asked for their permission to proceed with
further testing.
This whole school screening process is an added positive
measure taken up by the school in order to better
understand our pupils’ needs in order to offer them a
better service.
Language 3 - Junior 5 PY5 pupils only
In order to continue to provide our Junior 5 PY5 pupils with
a taste of different languages, as well as to ensure that the
pupils take a well informed decision when choosing the
International Language to study at St Martin’s College, we
are pleased to mention that the Junior 5s will be studying
German, French, Spanish and Italian this scholastic year.
Outings
Kindly note that this coming year the fee for outings has
been included in the school fee. This initiative, suggested
by a number of parents, has been taken up so that pupils do
not need to carry money to school. Educational outings vary
from year to year and unless an opportune outing arises,
which we feel the pupils would benefit from attending,
parents will not be asked to pay an additional fee.
Junior School
Maltes e Programme
Junior 1 & 2 EY3 (PY1) & EY4 (PY2)
In Junior 1 pupils will commence the year by having 3 lessons in Maltese. The focus will be mainly on speaking and
listening so that pupils enjoy their Maltese lessons from the start. Between January and June there will be 7 Maltese
lessons a week, where reading and writing will be included in the programme. The teachers will be constantly guiding you
as to how best to help your children progress through the year. In Junior 2 pupils will have 7 lessons of Maltese a week.
Junior 3 – 5 PY3-5
The Maltese Language is a vital communicative tool for our pupils as well as a core, compulsory area of learning. Access
to most Sixth Forms and the University of Malta is only possible if students have a good pass in the Maltese SEC exam.
Many pupils who practise and read the language regularly obviously have an excellent chance of scoring high grades;
others, whose exposure to the language is limited to the classroom, often struggle. There are also pupils who only started
studying and using the language recently and are understandably still at a basic level compared to their peers. This very
wide range of abilities in Maltese can make it difficult for teachers to ensure that pupils at all levels are learning at the
optimal rate.
At St Martin’s College ‘setting’ for Maltese lessons has been piloted and has been in place for the past four years. Parents,
pupils and teachers alike have seen the benefits the students have gained over the past years. We are pleased to inform
you that we will also be taking up this positive and enriching experience at CHS during this coming scholastic year.
In order to cater for the various abilities we will be piloting the setting of Maltese classes by putting pupils at similar
levels of ability in the same set for Maltese lessons. This will allow teachers to adapt work more successfully according
to the pupils’ abilities. Also, personalised guidance can happen better in groups of a similar standard, creating the right
atmosphere for both pupils and teachers to work at a steady pace.
It is important to point out that setting does not mean streaming. The latter, which has never been practised at CHS is a
system in which pupils are placed in classes according to their ability across all subjects. We shall be using a “Setting” and
“banding” approach which means that children of similar abilities are grouped together for teachers to be able to work
out learning activities that are appropriate to the specific level. All Maltese lessons in a level will happen at the same time,
helping pupils to regroup according to their set. To facilitate individual attention, we will also be ensuring that the classes
needing the most attention and help will be the smallest in size. Pupils will be placed in three sets, an Advanced Group, a
Standard Group and a Support Group.
You will be receiving an email, by early next week, indicating the group your child will be in. It should be noted that the
groups in the support set will follow a programme that is adapted and designed to kick-start pupils’ engagement with the
subject. Here the emphasis on conversation, vocabulary and basic grammar is greater than in the other groups.

8
Early Years
Junior 1
In order to ensure that our Junior 1 pupils find the
transition between KG2 and J1 easier, pupils will start
school on Tuesday 25th September. This is an open day for
our Junior 1 pupils and their parents. You and your child are
welcome to visit your child’s new teacher and classroom by
appointment following the schedule below:
Surnames A – D - 09:00-09:45
Surnames E – L 09:45-10:30
Surnames M – S - 10:30-11:15
Surnames T – Z - 11:15-12:00
Kindly respect the above times so that only a few pupils and
parents are in the classroom at the same time in order to
benefit fully from this opportunity of being with your child
on their first day in Junior 1. Pupils are to come in their full
summer uniform as this will help simulate a real day at school.
We look forward to the Junior 1s first day of school!
Wednesday 26th – Friday 28th September
The school day for our Junior 1 pupils will run between
08:15 and 13:15 on the dates above. This has been done
so as to ensure that the children do not find the school day
too taxing. At 13:15 you will be asked to collect your child
from their classroom and then proceed to the reception
area where you may exit from the front doors.
As from Monday 1st October, the school day will be a full
day (08:15 – 14:20).
Junior School
Arrival & Departure - SAFETY FIRST!

kindly remind you to make use of the Lion’s court car system ONLY if you can drop off your children to be accompanied
into the building by school staff. You are not to leave your vehicle unattended inside Lion’s Court if you make use of
this system. Kindly consider that some pupils will not be comfortable to be dropped off during the first few weeks of
school and would feel more secure if their parents accompany them into the school. PLEASE DO NOT OBSTRUCT OUR
NEIGHBOURS’ GARAGES/EXITS.
Junior 1 – 5: Pupils may avail themselves of the following services:
a) Breakfast Club – 07:30 – 08:10 – Pupils will be preparing their own breakfast and will be able to enjoy porridge, toast,

no supervision before this time and the gates will be kept closed. We kindly ask you to bring your children to school

Junior School
Afterschool Programmes
After 1 Programme
In order to consolidate and improve our physical education
programme as well as to be in line with the new proposals
suggested by the National Curriculum Framework, all our
Junior 1 to 5 pupils will be enjoying the following activities
this scholastic year:
Junior 1 and 2
Design & Technology, Nutrition, Gymnastics and Movement
(over and above their PE lessons)
Junior 3, 4 and 5
Swimming, Dodgeball, Football, Gymnastics and Design &
Technology (over and above their PE lessons)
These activities will take place, once a week for
approximately 7 weeks each, on a roster basis. Pupils may
start off, for example, with Swimming lessons for 7 weeks,
then move on to Gymnastics lessons for the next 7 weeks,
Dodge ball and Football lessons for another 7 weeks and
conclude the year with 7 weeks of Design and Technology.
A timetable of how this programme will run will be
forwarded to you.
Pupils will need to come to school in their PE kit on the day
when they have the above programme taking place, Junior
5s’ programme runs on Mondays, Junior 4s’ on Tuesdays,
Junior 3s’ on Wednesdays, Junior 2s’ on Thursdays and
Junior 1s’ on Fridays.
The Swimming Programme (Junior 3, 4 and 5)
Pupils will be introduced to swimming through a ‘Learn
to Swim’ programme run by Mr Mark Buttigieg (ASA
Certified Coach) and Ms Belinda Milton (B.Ed. (Hons)).
11
Early Years
Junior 1-5 (EY3-PY5)
The core purpose of this programme will be for our pupils
to feel water safe whilst the main focus will be to provide
them with basic knowledge of the four strokes: freestyle,
backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Sessions will take
place at the National Pool. Lessons will take place either
between September and mid-November or between April
and May.
Our pupils will need to bring these items in a separate bag:
▪▪ swimsuits/trunks (It would be preferable for girls to
wear a swimsuit)
▪▪ a beach towel
▪▪ flippers/arm bands (if needed)
▪▪ swimming cap (optional)
▪▪ flip flops
Pupils will change into their swimsuits at the pool. After
the lesson they will be changing back into their uniform.
Since it does take quite some time for our young pupils to
shower and change we feel that once pupils are coming
straight home after swimming they will be able to shower at
home. This will help us save on precious time which could
be dedicated to the teaching and learning of swimming.
We thank you for your understanding.
Kindly fill in the form which will be emailed to you shortly
in order to inform us of the relevant details.
The Design and Technology Programme
The aim behind the D & T programme is for pupils to learn
to use their creative skills since they will be designing and
creating objects during their lessons. In Junior 3 to 5 some
of the lessons will involve cookery. Thus we kindly ask you
to let us know whether your child is allergic to any food.
Please send this information to Ms Margaret Fonde, the
D & T teacher, on [email protected]
