passes are on sale now, and
the pools will open, weather
permitting, June 11 through

of the pools are closed on

Lakers Make Deal

Mayor
Thomas McDermott is proud to
announce a deal struck between
Midwest Collegiate team, the
Michigan City Lakers, and
the City of Hammond Park
Department, which allows the
MC Lakes to lease Hammond’s
south baseball field, located in
Riverside Park, for use by this
franchise for the 2016 MCL
Summer Baseball Season. For
years, this franchise has played
all their home games on the
baseball field at Purdue North
Central, located in Westville,
Indiana. This baseball field has
recently become unavailable to
the Lakers franchise, leaving
them without a field to play
their 2016 home games. That
is when representatives from
the Midwest Collegiate League
approached Hammond city
officials about allowing the
Lakers to play their home
games in Riverside Park, in
Hammond.
“We were thrilled to
be asked to temporarily house
the historic Lakers franchise
out of Riverside Park,” stated
Hammond Mayor Thomas
McDermott.

Midwest Collegiate League

(MCL) to permenantly operate
a franchise out of this location
in South Hammond. We have a
great baseball stadium, equipped
with lights, a scoreboard, and
seating capacity for around 500
spectators. I have always been
a fan of the Whiting Oilmen,
and now I am proud that
Hammond, temporarily, has a
MCL team that can compete
with the great teams that form
the Midwest Collegiate League.
This is excellent use of an
amazing, natural grass, baseball
field that was built entirely with
Hammond taxpayers’ money.”
The one year deal with
the Michigan City Lakers
provides that the baseball club
will pay close to $5,000 for
the primary use of the fields
and that the City of Hammond
Parks Department will keep
all money received from the
concession stands during the
Lakers season. The Lakers
Baseball Club, in return, will
get to keep proceeds from all
ticket sales, and will also be
responsible for maintaining the
field conditions of the South
Baseball field at Riverside
Park.

PUNW Appoints Top
Academic Official
A
higher
education
academician of nearly 30 years with
a track record of administrative
success has been appointed
Purdue University Northwest’s top
academic official.
Ralph O. Mueller, dean of
the University of Hartford’s College
of Education, Nursing and Health
Professions in Westford, Conn. since
2009, will assume the PNW position
of Vice Chancellor for Academic
Affairs and Provost July 15.
July also represents the
start of the 2016-17 academic
fiscal year—the first official year
of operation for Purdue Northwest.
Early last March, the Higher
Learning Commission approved
the unification of Purdue University
Calumet of Hammond and Purdue
University North Central of
Westville into Purdue Northwest, a
single university of two campuses
and some 15,000 students.
In his new role, Mueller will
oversee an institution of six colleges
and 70+ undergraduate and graduate
degree programs.
“Dr. Mueller offers
an impressive and extensive
background of results-oriented
academic leadership,” Purdue
Calumet Chancellor and Purdue
Northwest Chancellor-Designate
Thomas L. Keon said. “He brings
to PNW proven success in key goal
areas of our strategic plan, including
academic excellence, student access
and success, learning through
engagement and discovery, and
partnership development.”
Mueller also is founding
director of the University of
Hartford’s Institute for Translational
Research, a multidisciplinary
umbrella for collaborations among
faculty, students and community
partners. Through its experiential
learning initiative, Purdue Northwest
will offer hands-on, real world
learning opportunities for students
in collaboration with faculty and
community partners.
“To serve as inaugural Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs
and Provost at Purdue University
Northwest—a new entity steeped
in the histories of two distinct

Purdue institutions—is a unique and
humbling opportunity,” Mueller
said. “The challenge and the great
promise of growing a common
culture to fulfill the University’s
mission is what drew me to come
and will drive me to stay.”
Prior to his University of
Hartford tenure, Mueller served five
years as chair of the Department
of Educational Leadership at The
George Washington University. He
also was a 2007-08 fellow of the
American Council on Education
(ACE) at the University of Miami.
Throughout his 29-year career in
higher education, he has served as a
tenured faculty member of applied
statistics with joint appointments in
education, psychology and public
policy/public administration.
According to Keon, Mueller
brings to PNW a background of
diverse success that has contributed to
increased student retention; effective
faculty mentoring; development of
new market-responsive academic
programs; establishment of formal
research and experiential learning
opportunities; strong visioning and
strategic planning; and outstanding
financial management, fundraising
and partnership development.
“From the initial airport
interview with the search
committee and the subsequent
on-campus conversations with
PNW constituents, to the decisive
follow-up discussions with
Chancellor Keon, I heard one
consistent message,” Mueller said.
”As one community dedicated to
student success, we will become a
first-choice university in Northwest
Indiana and beyond. That impressed
me!”
Mueller also brings an
extensive academic portfolio of
published books and peer-reviewed
articles and presentations. He holds
a baccalaureate degree from Elon
(NC) University, master’s degree
from Wake Forest (NC) University
and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.

First.”
The student-athletes
were the guests of Senator
Lonnie M. Randolph for the
119th General Assembly.
The kids were treated to a
first-hand glimpse of how the
legislative process works.
The educational experience
included a tour of the House
and the Senate Chambers,
the Supreme Court, and the
Governor’s Office.
The team was also
given the tasks of delivering
important messages to
the Senate floor and
participating in a mock
debate with students from
Greenwood, Indiana. This
type of interaction exposes
students to urban and rural
issues.

The Hess Sumemr Reading Program Camp Read S’more meets Wednesdays during
the summer from 10 am - 11:30 am, and on July 27th the program wraps up with
s’mores! Each session includes a read aloud and the opportunity to check out books
from the library to assist students with completing their summer reading requirements.
Computers will also be available for Reading Counts quizzes and other online reading
enrichment, Raffle prizes will be donated from Cabela’s. Students who attend 5 out
of 7 weeks of Camp Read S’more and complete the summer reading log (7 weeks of
reading completed) will have the opportunity to be part of the Great Hess Camp Out

Northwest will offer the noncredit, online continuing
education course, “Sketching
with Leonardo,” intended to
provide self-paced interactive
instruction to artists who want
to learn how to incorporate
the style and techniques of
Leonardo da Vinci into their
work.
The course is scheduled
July 11 through Aug. 15.
Registration is $175 per
person and must be paid by

This is a self-paced
course; participants work
at their own pace and
convenience and will not
be required to participate in
activities on specific days or

will learn and practice
observation techniques, line
value, ink hatching, pencil and
