hether it’s the seasons, today’s fashion, or especially, our golf
swings, the only constant in life is change. We’re all a work
in progress, tweaking and tinkering with the moving parts of
ourselves, personally and professionally. Myself included.
I’ve invested 10 years of my heart and soul into GolfTime
Magazine, and I couldn’t be more proud of the results. We’ve
grown and changed so much over that time, and with this issue, I’m
pleased to announce another change: GolfTime Magazine is now
part of Killarney Golf Media. It wasn’t an easy decision, but one I
know will pave the way for even bigger and better things for this
magazine in the future.
One thing, however, won’t change: a commitment to bringing
you the very best from the Midwest’s golf scene. We have much
of that on display in this issue, starting with our cover story, about
the magical golf in Minnesota. Hazeltine National Golf Club, in
Chaska, is the site of this year’s Ryder Cup, so start preparing with
our feature on page 10.
We also bring you the golf wonders of Walworth County,
Wisconsin, home to the new Lake Geneva Area Golf Trail, filled
with terrific tracks. It’s a don’t-miss destination in the Midwest if
there ever was one, so check out our feature on page 65.
There’s plenty more where that came from in this issue, though.
We take you to Florida’s spectacular new Streamsong Resort
on page 112, and inside the storied track at Indianapolis Motor
Speedway — and the Brickyard Golf Club — on page 82. We
also talk to Chicago native and prolific golf course architect Roger
Packard, beginning on page 38.
It’s another issue I’m excited to share with you, and a great start
to this magazine’s new chapter. It has been quite an adventure, and
I am honored to say I have been a part of this incredible industry.
GolfTime has helped to define who I am today.
I’d like to say thank you to all of the loyal clients, friends and
readers I’ve made along the way. The biggest thank you goes to my
husband Mike, and my parents, Mary and Jim, for their unending
love, support and encouragement.
We’re all forever changing, but some things stay the same. It’s
still Your Game, and Your Time.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course Revamped & Renewed
If you’re looking for a stellar, sunny spot to play this spring, take your clubs south to Tampa,
Florida, for a spin on the new, renewed Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort.
A favorite stop on the PGA Tour and home to the Valspar Championship—won by a fella
named Jordan Spieth in 2015—the Copperhead Course recently reopened after a substantial
restoration project. Copperhead was designed by Larry Packard in 1974, and the remodel was
assisted last year by his son, Roger (see our feature on page 38). The elder Packard, who
helped create the American Society of Golf Course Architects and has more than 600 courses
to his credit, loved the place so much he retired there, calling it home until he passed away in
2014 at the age of 101.
But the course was showing some wear and tear over the years, and underwent a complete
reseeding, greens and bunkers got makeovers, and the second and third fairways were raised
two to three yards higher to reduce flooding.
Innisbrook is owned by Chicago billionaire Sheila Johnson, CEO and founder of Salamander
Resorts. Visit www.innisbrookgolfresort.com.

Midwest’s Best Golf Shows
What’s the next-best thing to the golf season in
the Midwest? The golf show season of course.
We’re lucky to have some of the country’s
most excellent golf expos, and you’ll find us at
a show near you! Come out and say hello:
Tinley Park Golf Expo — Feb. 12-14, 2016 www.TinleyParkGolfExpo.com

The Belly Ban Begins!
Just like a New Year’s resolution to lose weight,
2016 is the year that the PGA, the USGA and the
R&A — golf’s Big Three ruling bodies — introduce
Rule 14-1B, the ban on “anchoring.” Of course, that
really means saying buh-bye to the belly putter, as a
golfer “in making a stroke, must not anchor the club,
either ‘directly’ or by use of an anchor point.”
You can always keep the belly putter, of course.
You just might need a little less belly to use it.

An Elite Club
Mistwood Completes Clubhouse, Restaurant
One of the Midwest’s best properties is the Ray Hearn-designed Mistwood Golf Club, the
reborn club in Romeoville, Illinois. Owned by Jim McWethy, Mistwood’s clubhouse is now
finally complete, with the opening of McWethy’s Tavern. The Scottish-themed clubhouse and
event center can accommodate groups of 250, with another 80 in the new tavern.
With everything from Scotch eggs (naturally) to steak sandwiches, filets and lamb chops,
as well as 18 beers on tap and full bar, McWethy’s Tavern is the cherry on top of a major,
multi-million renovation project at the club, making it a premier property in the Chicago golf
scene. Don’t miss it. www.mistwoodgc.com

hen Davis Love III was named
captain for the U.S. team
for the 2016 Ryder Cup at
Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska,
Minnesota, he knew he was going to need
some insider knowledge. That’s why he
didn’t wait long — or look far — to
name his first vice captain. “On February 24th I was lucky enough to be named
the 2016 Ryder Cup captain for the U.S.
team,” Love explained. “On that same day, I
announced Tom Lehman would be my first
vice captain.
Ryder Cup Vice Captain, Tom Lehman.
“He’s been a great asset, obviously, being
a local boy up in Minnesota. He’s given me
great advice not only on the town, but the
fans, the golf course. Tom has been really
valuable with that.”
12
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
For Lehman, who grew up in Alexandria,
Minnesota, it’s been a “local boy makes good”
dream come true for the 1996 Open champion.
“On a personal level, being from Minnesota, from Alexandria, Minnesota, to be able
to go back home and be a part of this Ryder
Cup team, it will be a thrill beyond all thrills,”
he said. “I am honored to be able to go back
home to Minnesota and be a part of this.”
SETTING THE STAGE
This, of course, is the golf world’s biggest
stage, the 2016 Ryder Cup, set for Sept. 27Oct. 2 at the historic Hazeltine National, just
outside the Twin Cities. And while thousands of visitors and native Minnesotans are
sure to pack Hazeltine’s emerald fairways
this fall, the Ryder Cup is but the latest accolade in a long, proud history of Minnesota
golf. It’s is the only state to have hosted all 13
USGA championships, plus the Walker Cup,
Curtis Cup, Solheim Cup, and many others. For millions of avid golfers, the Ryder
Cup will showcase a golf-crazy state that has
long been among the top golf destinations
in the country.
In fact, golf visitors ranked Minnesota
fourth highest from a list of 13 top golf destinations, behind only Florida, Arizona and
South Carolina. While Minnesota might be
known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” 508
might be a better number to hang your hat
on. That’s the number of incredible golf
courses that call Minnesota home, and they
beckon to golfers around the country every
summer with their beautiful natural settings,
excellent conditions, and affordability. Nearly 90% of Minnesota’s courses are open to the
public, with a whopping 19 golf resorts for
every taste and budget.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GOLF’S GREATEST EVENT
WHAT: The 41st Ryder Cup
WHEN: Sept. 27-Oct. 2, 2016
WHERE: Hazeltine National Golf Club,
Chaska, Minnesota
COURSE ARCHITECT: Robert Trent Jones, Sr.
WHO: U.S. team vs. Europe team
U.S. CAPTAIN: Davis Love III
EUROPE CAPTAIN: Darren Clarke
DEFENDING CHAMPION: Team Europe
TICKETS: www.rydercup.com/usa
Minnesota is no stranger to hosting large-scale events
that require big-time hospitality. This includes MLB AllStar Game, National Senior Games, PGA Championships,
NHL All-Star Game, World Series and even the 2018 Super
Bowl. This year the Ryder Cup is coming to Hazeltine National Golf Club, Chaska, Minnesota (a suburb southwest
of Minneapolis) — the first time to Minnesota.
The Ryder Cup is named after the English businessman Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy. The
biennial competition between Team USA and Team
Europe will be broadcast to 500 million homes in 180
countries. Since 1927 the Ryder Cup is the only sporting
event where Europe is represented as a team. The event
will attract 250,000 spectators with resulting economic
impact in excess of $150 million to the area. NBC Sports
and its cable partners will combine to produce 27 hours
of coverage over a three-day period.
Imagine a golf course with pre-event construction
during August and September of 1,500 working on the
property at any given time. There will be 2,000,000
square feet of temporary flooring constructed on site –
that’s equivalent to nearly 46 acres or 35 football fields.
Hazeltine National Golf Club was opened in 1962
as a private club whose charter and mission statement
was to “build and maintain a golf course suitable for the
conduct of national championships.”
Mission accomplished. Some of the notable championships Hazeltine has hosted include:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
1966 U.S. Women’s Open Championship
1970 U.S. Open Championship

2001 USGA Men’s State Team Championship
2002 PGA Championship
2006 U.S. Amateur Championship
2009 PGA Championship
2016 Ryder Cup
Why was Minnesota selected for this prestigious event?
The Ryder Cup Tournament Chairman, Reed Mackenzie,
has stated that the PGA of America (which stages the PGA
Championship and Ryder Cup) is bringing the Ryder Cup
to Hazeltine National Golf Club because, “We want to be
part of Minnesota’s enthusiasm for championship golf.”

MINNESOTA’S GOLF BUCKET LIST
While it might be the most famous, Hazeltine
National is far from the only great course in
Minnesota. There are plenty of courses that
appear on national “Best of ” lists. The purveyor of Minnesota’s “bucket list” of mustplay courses is the Explore Minnesota Golf
Alliance (www.exploreminnesotagolf.com)
featuring a collection of the state’s top 24
public golf facilities and resorts (a total of
33 courses) where visitors can be confident
that they will have a fantastic golf experience
loaded with quality of service and course
condition/amenities.
14
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
You don’t have to travel far from Hazeltine
in Chaska to find a great course to play while
in the area, either. Among the higher-end
Twin Cities courses sure to impress is Chaska
Town Course, which is virtually in Hazeltine’s
backyard. StoneRidge Golf Club in Stillwater,
Legends Club and The Wilds Golf Club both
in Prior Lake and Rush Creek Golf Club in
Maple Grove are also atop the list of Greater
Twin Cities courses. The Explore Minnesota
Golf Alliance courses are on every golf connoisseur’s list for their services as they offer
country club amenities at public facilities.
There are also plenty of Greater Twin
Cities area top-level courses that are every
bit as well conditioned and challenging as
the high-end tracks. Consider Ridges at Sand
Creek, Stonebrooke Golf Club, Prestwick
Golf Club, Willingers Golf Club and Braemar
Golf Course. Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn
Park has hosted multiple LPGA tournaments. Located less than an hour from Minneapolis-St Paul you’ll find The Jewel, a Hale
Irwin-designed gem on the Mississippi River.
If you have a little extra time, head up
north to the Brainerd Lakes Area in Central
Minnesota, where you’ll find some of the finest courses the state has to offer. The Classic
at Madden’s, The Pines and The Preserve at
Grand View Lodge, the Legacy Courses at
Cragun’s Resort, Golden Eagle Golf Club and
the Arnold Palmer-designed Deacon’s Lodge
at Breezy Point — named after his
father — are challenging and beautiful courses that wind through
quiet woods splashed with dozens
of water features and teeming with
wildlife. On the way to Brainerd
don’t miss Territory Golf Club in St.
Cloud — central Minnesota’s best.
Head toward the Wild North of
northern Minnesota where you’ll
discover three of Golf Digest’s “Top
100” courses within 20 minutes of
each other. Binge on fantastic golf
at Wilderness at Fortune Bay and
Giants Ridge (The Quarry and The Legend).
The lodging at these properties is second to
none. On the way up north try Black Bear
Golf Course featuring a casino resort near
Duluth. If you head to the west-northwest
visit the golf resorts near Lehman’s hometown of Alexandria, Thumper Pond Resort,
Geneva Golf Club and Arrowwood Resort.
While visitors with golf in mind decide on
their preferred courses they can easily call
on the accommodation capabilities of the
Bloomington Convention & Visitors Bureau
and Minneapolis NW Convention & Visitors
Bureau for hotel recommendations.
QUALITY + VARIETY + VALUE
The overall quality of golf in Minnesota cannot be matched. The listing of golf courses
included in the Minnesota golf landscape
constitutes a hall of fame of national/regional
“award-winning” courses from such publications as Golf Digest, Golf Week, Golf News,
Business Week, Sports Illustrated, and NGCOA, among others. All told, Minnesota’s
golf has won hundreds of awards, befitting a
state with some of the best golf in the world.
The variety of the 500+ Minnesota
courses is almost endless. Golfers can opt
for their favorite style — links, deep woods,
breathtaking river and lake views all woven
into Mother Nature’s natural beauty. Choose
from family friendly par-3 and executive
courses to championship courses and former
pro tour sites — Minnesota has it all. No
wonder Minnesota leads the nation in golfers per capita.

True value is a major attribute of golf in
Minnesota with green fees lower than other
golf hotbeds around North America. If
you’ve played Minnesota golf courses then
you already understand the unbelievable
value to be found at our resorts and facilities. And here’s the best part — green fees
range from about $30 at the well-manicured
municipal courses of Minneapolis/St. Paul
to $100 for the upscale public courses surrounding the Twin Cities and resort locations around the state — seldom a greens fee
beyond $100. Many facilities offer great stay
& play packages.

typical modern “waterpark” design, it is all about grass, sand and trees. Located in a historic
neighborhood just minutes from O’Hare. Mt. Prospect is the closest thing to the conditions
and feel of an old private club, with a daily fee rate.
A new continuous cart path keeps carts out everyday and the new Club Car fleet features

includes a large bent grass tee, 300+ yard range, a large short game area and challenging
practice greens. Home to state champion high school teams, Mt. Prospect has one of the
oldest and most successful junior golf programs in Illinois. Adult group and private lessons
are also available with our PGA professional staff.
Our beautiful clubhouse grill room and patio look over the golf course and are the perfect
place to relax with a drink or have one of our famous 1/2 pound “Mt. Prospect Burger.”

Land of the
Forgotten Son
Once a Chicago-Area Fixture With a Multitude
of Major Midwest Designs, Roger Packard Left a
Legacy Behind to Live Abroad By Don Shell
38
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
YOUR GAME. YOUR TIME.
39
M
aybe you’ve seen it on the back of your scorecard. Or tucked
away on a course website. Maybe it sounds faintly familiar,
but you just can’t quite place it. See, unless you’re a true
golf architecture aficionado, the name Roger Packard isn’t likely to ring
many bells, even though it should. The fact is, Packard’s probably the best
designer you’ve never heard of, or certainly, not enough of.
His lack of name recognition these days
isn’t all that surprising, though. The Chicago
native and pedigreed architect packed his
passport and bags and set sail for Shanghai
more than a decade ago, seeking greener
pastures in Asia’s growing golf market.
“I grew up in Chicago, and I figured I’d
hung out there long enough, so I said, let’s
try something else, let’s go to China,” the
soft-spoken architect explained. “I’ve been
there for 11 years now, and I suppose it feels
more like home than anywhere else.”
Yet for his first 50-plus years, the
Midwest was where he hung his hat, and
where he built his legacy.
The son of famed architect Larry Packard,
Roger had a notable career here in the building boom of the 1980s and ’90s, with dozens
of beloved designs to his credit around his
hometown and beyond.
He has more than 60 courses to his resume
in Illinois alone, and more than 250 courses
40
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
worldwide, and counting. Yet despite the
what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitude
of the golf industry, Packard’s work is
deserving of continued praise.
He’s certainly one of the most prolific
architects in the Chicago region, and has
to be among the most accomplished, too.
Consider this lineup: Eagle Ridge Resort
(all 63 holes, including fan favorite, The
General), Deerfield Golf Club, Cantigny
Golf Club, Trapper’s Turn, Prairie Bluff,
Boughton Ridge, Bryn Mawr … the impressive list goes on and on.
PREVIOUS SPREAD: Roger Packard the son returned
to Florida’s Innisbrook Resort to help restore his
father’s finest course, Copperhead. ABOVE: Packard
was prolific in the 1980s and ‘90s, designing more
than 60 courses in Illinois, including Lakeside Golf Club
in Wheaton. RIGHT: Arguably his finest work is the
roller coaster called The General, at Eagle Ridge Resort
in Galena.
THE SON RETURNS
After many years in China, he returned
stateside last August, returning to Palm
Harbor, Florida, to help finish renovations
of one of his and his father’s finest designs,
the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook
Resort.
The remodeling of such a special place
to him was enough to pull him away from
China, when not much else has brought him
back over the years.
“I’ve come back very rarely,” Packard
said. “I came back to see dad twice, before
he passed away. There really isn’t any draw
for me right now to come back to the states.
I think I’ve turned Chinese.”
If he’s built a Great Wall around his heritage, however, it’s for good reason.
“There isn’t much new happening in golf
around the country,” Roger explained. “As
far as I understand, the golf industry has
pretty much tanked out (in terms of new
construction). They attribute it to a lot of
things. Younger people aren’t getting into it
as much as they used to. Baby Boomers are
42

retiring, and there isn’t the desire. It hasn’t
been promoted effectively. Golf has been
expensive, so it doesn’t have the draw that
it used to, either.
“I don’t think we’ll ever see it again the
way it was in the ’70s and ’80s. That’s why
China was so strong—they came on like
gangbusters.”
Some of Packard’s many designs in Asia
are found at the 54-hole Empark Grand
Hotel Tengchong, surrounded by volcanic mountain ranges in China’s western
Yunnan province. But his work can be
found throughout the region, from Bangkok
to Beijing, and plenty in between.
MIDWEST CLASSICS
While his business may have been exported
overseas, Packard’s work continues to shine
here at home.
Some of his best work can be found
in the rolling hillside of Galena, Illinois,
where Packard has helped put Eagle Ridge
Golf Resort on the map. He has 63 truly
terrific holes there, including the rockin’
CLOCKWISE FROM UPPER LEFT: Packard’s 27 holes at Cantigny Golf Club earned him his highest accolade, Best

roller coaster of a course called The General.
Opened in 1997 and designed in collaboration with two-time U.S. Open champ Andy
North, The General is a wild and wooly
thrill-ride through the hillside, with steep
elevations, ravines and rock outcroppings to
keep things interesting. The course has been
a fixture on Golf Digest’s Top 100 You Can
Play lists over the years, as well.
“I’m very, very proud of all the courses
there, but The General but was just an
amazing piece of property to work with,”
Packard said. “That was an amazing team
that did that whole project. That was a
dream come true for me. We used the land
properly, they had some mature oaks, some
rolling land, it had woods, it had water … all
the elements you want. They had an owner
that wanted the best, and was willing to
spend the money to get it.”
Packard had a similar experience at one
of his most heralded designs, Cantigny Golf
Club. The response was sensational after it
opened in 1989, including being named the
Best New Public Course by Golf Digest and
as a top-25 public course in the country.
The course has hosted four Illinois State
Amateur Championships, in addition to the
Chicago Open and the U.S. Amateur Public
Links Championship.
A SIMPLE EQUATION
Whether it’s here at home or overseas,
Packard says the reason for his success is
simple: he puts playability for the golfer
ahead of all else in his designs, in stark contrast to the “harder the better” mentality of
some of his contemporaries.
“Some people try to make them as hard
as they can, and that’s ridiculous,” Packard
said. “Who’s going to go back and play that?
Golf’s a business, and my responsibility to
YOUR GAME. YOUR TIME.
43
Packard fits his designs to the landscape — but doesn’t let a little rock come between him and his vision. “Basically
the design of The General just fit the property so perfectly. The problem was there was a lot of rock, so we had to do
a lot of blasting, and it cost a lot of money to do that. But we had an owner who was willing, and I think it shows in
the final product.”
the owner is to get people to come back, and
my responsibility to the golfer is to make
them want to come back.
“I’ve got to design for the average golfer.
For me, to create something that’s ridiculously hard, anybody can do that. But what’s
the point? At Cantigny, I tried to give people
a lot of things golfers saw on TV — an
island green, deep bunkers, and they could
do a lot of the things they saw on TV —
right here in Chicago. But it’ll be fair to you,
and you don’t have to be beat up by it.”
“Cantigny and the General were two
of the best projects that I could imagine,”
Packard said. “You just do what you do,
because you love to do it, and hopefully
there’s people that like what you do. We
do it just like dad did — it’s for the
golfer, to go out and have a good time.
44
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
Make it fun, make it playable. That was
dad’s credo, what he lived by, and what he
taught me.
“I don’t think you’ll find any of our
courses that are impossible.”
THE ROAD AHEAD
While he’s had an Asian address for more
than a decade, a return to his homeland
isn’t impossible, either, he says. He still does
some work stateside, from consulting at
Innisbrook, to assisting at another remodel
of his father’s designs, Chaska Golf Club in
Appleton, Wisconsin.
“(Chaska owner) Tom Boldt asked me
to come in to make suggestions on how
to keep Chaska up to date, but respect
my dad’s original design,” Packard said. “I
suggested putting in forward tees to appeal
to the seniors, juniors and women, tree
planting, and some refurbishment of
traps that had not been redone since the
original construction. Chaska has been family owned by the Boldt family since it’s
inception. It’s built on flat ground but has
a lot of character and is a testament to
good golf and the owners and staff for all
these years.”
Boldt said it was important to keep the
work “in the family.”
“I met his dad many years ago,” he said.
“My dad (Oscar Boldt) knew Roger’s dad,
because he hired him to design the facility.
Packard had been recommended because
of the success of Brown County, which is
nearby. At that time, it was the best public
course in the area. We want to believe this
has really stood the test of time. I think
we’ve been good stewards and faithful to
Larry Packard’s vision of what that course
could be like.”
So the sons have worked together to
restore their fathers’ visions, providing
beautiful symmetry in the process.
“I thought that was really a nice way of
capturing that (family legacy), and really
appreciated being able to do that,” Boldt
said. “I emailed him and found out he’s
been in China, and asked him if he would
have time to come up and take a look at it.
He spent the day with us, and put together
a list of things we might want to consider
in making improvements to the course,
and brought a builder up to give us some
other ideas.”
The result is a legacy that lives on, and
one that may have whetted Packard’s appetite for a second chapter stateside.
“I’ve got to re-establish my name back
there,” he said. “But yeah, I would like to
come back to the Midwest. It’d be fun. I’m
at the age now, if you give me an owner that
knows what he wants, and can maintain it
that way, then I’d love to work with him.”

The First Tee
The Force of Luke
Luke Donald’s Annual Tasting Event a Heroic Fundraiser for The First Tee
of Greater Chicago
E
ach year, more than 350 golf and wine
enthusiasts join local PGA Tour player
and wine producer Luke Donald for a
spectacular gourmet wine tasting dinner to
benefit The First Tee of Greater Chicago, a
youth development organization that teaches character education and life skills through
the game of golf.
This premier wine event features a tasting
of dozens of wines and spirits selected from
the Terlato Wine Group’s Global Portfolio
and the Luke Donald Collection, paired
with one-of-a-kind exquisite dishes from the
selected wine’s region.
Last fall, a spectacular view overlooking
the 18th Green at Conway Farms Golf Club,
during the BMW Championship, created
the perfect ambiance for the wine tasting
experience.
Of course, it’s not all about the wine …
Luke entertained the crowd in a special Q
& A Golf Talk with Golf Channel “Morning
Drive” hosts Gary Williams and Cara
Robinson, who interviewed Luke and special
guests Keegan Bradley and Rickie Fowler.
Past years’ guests included: Jack Nicklaus,
David Feherty, Tim Finchem, Steve Stricker,
Mark Wilson, Ben Crenshaw, Chip Beck, and
Colin Montgomerie, among others.
We caught up with Luke to hear his take
after seven great years of Taste events, and
plenty more:
Q. You’ve got your choice of charities to
help. What is it about the First Tee of
Greater Chicago that interested you? A. The First Tee is a wonderful organization
that provides children with the opportunity to learn golf and the inherent values
of the game. When I was a young boy, I
was given opportunities to play at club at

about the way you played last year, and
how do you feel heading into 2016?
Q. Is it hard to get those busy people to
attend? What’s your “sales pitch” like?
A. I feel like good things are coming. I just
have to keep putting myself in positions.
I’m happy with seeing some low rounds
now. I’m not just shooting around par. I’m
throwing in some four, five, six under pars.
You need to do that if you want to win. I
want to play at the highest level, play in
the majors and world events. Being in that
top 50 is very important for that, so a win
would certainly help my cause.
A. The guys are very supportive of The First
Tee so that makes the pitch pretty easy
because they know they are supporting a
great cause. I just promise them an evening
of great wine and that usually seals the deal!
Q. You’ve gotten to work with some of
the kids in the program, too. What’s
impressed you the most?

event. RIGHT: Luke and his wife, Diane, met at Northwestern University and still call Chicago home.
a very young age and it allowed me to play
with older kids and the members. It had
a profound impact on my early stages of
development. I feel a responsibility to give
back so other kids can have opportunities
such as mine. And my wife, Diane, is from
Chicago so we are committed to supporting its local charities.
Q. You have three little girls of your own.
Did becoming a father affect how you see
the First Tee?
A. Well it has definitely taught me patience
and the importance of providing quality educational experiences. I realize our
children will have unique opportunities
to learn the game if they choose, so it has
magnified the importance of The First
Tee and their mission to provide access
48

to the game and affordable, high quality
programs for all families.
Q. Your Taste of the First Tee has been an
incredible event, with a long list of A-List
stars. Has there been a highlight for you?
A. The event has really grown over the past
seven years, and it has helped the chapter
expand programs so I am very proud of our
success. Having Jack Nicklaus and David
Feherty attend was of course a very special,
and this past year my good friends Keegan
Bradley and Rickie Fowler joined me at
Conway Farms, which was a lot of fun. We
always have a great live auction and Rickie
ended up buying a signed Jordan Speith
Putter for $8,000! There have been so many
other great guests and entertaining emcees
who have made each event a very special
A. The determination they have and the joy
the game brings to them is really great to
see. The outstanding participants who have
presented at the Wine Tasting have been
so impressive. They show such confidence
and poise speaking in front of over 300
adults and their stories of success in school
and on the golf course are a testament of
the impact of the program.
Q. We talk a lot about “growing the game.”
Can you talk about the importance of that,
and how you see The First Tee of Greater
Chicago fitting into that equation?
A. The First Tee of Greater Chicago is
now reaching over 50,000 youth in the
Chicagoland area. It’s just fantastic. As
many opportunities we can provide to
introduce kids to the game whether in
school, after school or the golf courses is
critically important for the future of the
game. In some communities golf is just
not an option, and so we are committed to
taking the program to where the kids are
and ensuring they have the opportunity
to learn.

throughout the country and in five international locations. The program is dedicated
to impacting the lives of young people by
providing educational programs that build
character, instill life-enhancing values and
promote healthy choices through the game
of golf.
In 2015, the Greater Chicago chapter’s
golf and character education programs will
reach an estimated 40,000-plus young people. The programs are taught in Chicago
area elementary schools, boys and girls
clubs, YMCA’s and at golf courses. The First
Tee of Greater Chicago was recognized last
year with Golf Digest’s Junior Development
Award and most recently by the United
States Golf Association with its Player for

ou’ve probably heard that eating simple
carbohydrates—like those found in refined-flour processed foods and high sugar
sports drinks—aren’t that great for you. It
goes beyond just being empty calories when
your golf game is involved. In the simplest
terms, eating these types of foods increases
the neurotransmitter serotonin in the body.
Serotonin reduces muscle function and
alertness while increasing the feelings of
lethargy and relaxation. It produces that
sugar crash we all want to avoid, especially
while we’re playing.
On the other hand, the neurotransmitter dopamine improves cognition, memory, mood, and attention. After eating a
meal of higher quality protein and fat and
52

lower carbs, the dopamine level increases
in the body.
Eat quality protein (like nuts, eggs, or
chicken), heart-healthy fats (like walnuts
and avocados), and complex carbs (like
fruit, veggies, or beans) before you play, so
your body and your head can stay in the
game. The message here is to keep your
snacking complex, not simple. Improving
your diet can improve your game.

LAKE GENEVA, Wisconsin — As rich as
the golf has become in Walworth County in
recent years, Dave Hallenbeck remembers
the days when you could drive a golf ball
from Genoa City to Whitewater and not have
it pass more than a handful of golf courses.
“I started here when it was the Playboy
Resort in 1977,” said Hallenbeck, the director
of golf at what is now the Grand Geneva Resort. “Golf here has always been very strong.
But when we started years ago, we didn’t have
the number of golf courses we do now.”
Indeed, there are now more than a dozen
courses in the greater Lake Geneva area
and nearly two dozen within a 30-minute
drive from Geneva Lake. Of those, six have
more than 18 holes on the property — including the 54-hole Geneva National Resort,
which offers three 18-hole tracks designed by
legends Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and
Gary Player.
This year, the Walworth County Visitors
Bureau will showcase the growth of its golf
and the quality of its courses by launching
the Lake Geneva Area Golf Trail. The trail
will be a collection of 10 area courses working together to create the Lake Geneva Area
Golf Passport. The passport features seasonal discounts and promotions designed
to encourage golfers to sample all that the
region has to offer when it comes to topnotch golf.
“We want to make Walworth County a
golf destination,” said Kathy Seeberg, executive director of the Walworth County Visitors
Bureau. “It’s not just a day trip anymore. We
want people to come and experience the
variety of golf courses in the area.

“From the par-3s to the championship
courses, it really is a family affair.”
Something for Everyone
While the golf is catching up, the Lake
Geneva area has long been a vacation
destination, and families from everywhere
have been flocking to Walworth County for
generations.
With Geneva Lake serving as the hub of
activities, the area has been a popular family destination in the summer for fishing,
boating and swimming. In addition, the
charm of downtown Lake Geneva has drawn
shoppers eager to scavenge through its
many antique shops, look for unique gifts
in boutique shops, or check out the creative
works of the area’s many local artists.
But these days there is much more to do in
Walworth County, which has adopted a slogan — “Naturally Fun” — that reflects a region making the most of its natural splendor.
From biking to bowling, galleries to gardens and horseback riding to hiking, there is
something for everyone in the Lake Geneva
area. The same can be said for its golf, too.
Since Hawk’s View came on the scene in
2001, giving the area its first facility with a
par-3 layout, Lake Geneva has been able to
boast one of the most diverse medleys of
golfing options of any destination in Wisconsin, covering every age and ability level.

Others have taken notice, too. In 2014,

the nation’s top 10 par-3 courses, ranking it
on a list that also included Bandon Preserve
at Bandon Dunes in Oregon and Threetops
at Treetops Resort in Michigan.
Wrote GolfAdvisor.com’s Mike Bailey of
Barn Hollow: “Like (Como Crossings), it’s
well-conditioned and has plenty of water
and sand, but its greens may be even more
challenging.”
That kind of praise doesn’t surprise Boesch,
who agrees the greens are “spectacular.”
“When people play it, they don’t expect
that,” Boesch said. “They come out for the
first time and, after their round, they’re like
‘Oh my gosh; that was amazing!’ It’s perfect
for family golf because not only is it doable
for the kids, but the avid parents taking their
kids out have a blast as well. It’s not just a
pitch-and-putt.”
Then again, having Grand Geneva and
Geneva National in the neighborhood
has forced other area courses to step up
their game when it comes to the total golf
experience.
The Brute at Grand Geneva was a fixture
on most state top 10 lists before the proliferation of championship courses in the Sheboygan area bumped it down. Still, the five
championship courses at Grand Geneva and
Geneva National remain ultra-popular —
both facilities enjoy huge outing numbers
— and are considered vital cornerstones
for Lake Geneva in Wisconsin’s competitive
destination golf market.
“We and Geneva National are kind of
the big kids on the block,” said Hallenbeck,
whose 36-hole facility features the famed
Brute Course, designed by Robert Bruce
Harris, and the popular Highlands Course,
a former Pete Dye/Jack Nicklaus design that
Robert Cupp freshened up in 1996, when the
name was also changed from the Briar Patch.
“But that doesn’t mean all of us aren’t in
this together. When some courses are busy,
the rest of us enjoy being busy. … We really
are kind of like a family.”

and the last to close. Its original 18 (now the North/
South courses) was designed by Ken Killian and Dick
Nugent and opened in 1973 and its third (the East
Course), designed by Gary Welsh, opened in 1993 to
complete the Golf Digest 4-star facility.
Alpine Valley Resort GC (East Troy): This 27-hole
layout, built in 1964, was the only foray into the Lake
Geneva area for Madison’s Art Johnson. The Summit,
Meadows and Sugar Creek nines are cut through
mature trees along Sugar Creek, with water in play on
nearly half of the holes.
Geneva National GC (Lake Geneva): The most
famous of the Lake Geneva-area courses, thanks to
courses by three golfing legends — Arnold Palmer,
Lee Trevino and Gary Player. The Palmer Course,
featuring elevated tees and challenging greens, cuts
through the rolling woods and culminates with three
stunning finishing holes along Lake Como. The Trevino
Course — like The Palmer — opened in 1990 and slices
through the trees but the holes are designed to favor
Lee Trevino’s natural fade with a steady diet of dogleg
right holes. The Player Course, which debuted with
nine holes in 1995 before Gary Player finished the
second nine in 2000, has become perhaps the most
popular of the three layouts, capitalizing on natural
wetlands to create tough risk/reward holes.
Country Club Estates (Fontana): This nine-hole,
private-turned-public Tom Bendelow layout is known
as “The Little Jewel,” and beloved for its fast greens
and even faster rounds.
Delbrook GC (Delavan): The city of Delavan-owned
facility began life in 1928 as an 18-hole private club.
The city bought the club in 1945 and kept the status
quo for more than 50 years. In 2001, Steven Halberg
designed nine new holes, giving Delbrook the North,
South and Middle nines.
Evergreen CC (Elkhorn): This 27-hole facility north of
Elkhorn is usually the first course in the area to open
Grand Geneva Resort (Lake Geneva): The granddaddy of all championship courses in the Lake Geneva
area, Grand Geneva was known as The Playboy Club
(until 1982) and Americana Resort (until 1993) before
Marcus Hotels bought it and made it the AAA Four
Hawk’s View GC (Lake Geneva): The new kid on
the block among Lake Geneva-area courses, Hawk’s
View opened in 2001 and brought some fresh air
to the area golf landscape. Its Como Crossings
layout (above) on the site of the former Mt. Fuji ski
hill is a 7,074-yard championship course that rivals
its more famous neighbors at Geneva National and
Grand Geneva. The Craig Schreiner-designed Barn
Hollow course is the area’s first championship
par-3 layout. The result? A 36-hole facility golfers
of all ages can enjoy.
Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn Resort (Delavan):
Rescued from financial difficulty in 2011, the
new owners revived one of the area’s oldest
layouts — designed by Tom Bendelow in 1921 and
re-engineered in 1990 by Dick Nugent. Set along
the tree-lined shores of Delavan Lake, the course is
known, appropriately, for its majestic oaks, deep
sand bunkers and the subtle undulations of its
small, fast greens.
Whitewater CC (Whitewater): Opened to the
public in 2012, this former nine-hole private club —
located in a lively university town — adds another
fast, fun nine to the Lake Geneva-area portfolio of
golf courses.
Portrait of a Proud Tradition
Lake Geneva’s family portrait reflects courses that range greatly in age, but each with a
unique place in the area’s golf landscape.
What is now Majestic Oaks at Lake Lawn
Resort (1921) and Delbrook Golf Course
(1928) — both in Delavan — helped shape
the golf picture in Walworth County ahead
of the Great Depression. Country Club Estates in Fontana (1929) and Whitewater
Country Club (1934) both opened as ninehole private clubs, but have since joined the
public-course lineup.
Golf course development stayed relatively
quiet around Lake Geneva area until the
early 1960s when Alpine Valley opened its
golf resort near East Troy. Other courses
started to pop up around it in the 1970s —
Abbey Springs in Fontana and Grand Geneva Resort in 1970 and Evergreen Country
Club in Elkhorn in 1973 — before Geneva
National (1990) and Hawk’s View (2001)
completed the picture of what will be the
Lake Geneva Area Golf Trail.
“There’s a lot for everybody,” said Dan
Plens, the head professional at Lake Lawn
Resort whose Majestic Oaks layout is the only
course on the trail to sit along Delavan Lake.
“Grand Geneva and Geneva National are
your upper tiers. We’re (in) that second-best
option if you’re looking for an affordable
weekend or mid-week getaway. You can stay
here, play golf here at an affordable price,
then venture down and play those courses.”
From Rebuilding to Re-branding

places to the fairways of Walworth County.

area’s reputation.
“We’re still Chicago’s playground,” Hawk’s
View’s Boesch said. “Our bread-and-butter
market will always be northern Illinois,
Chicago and the northern suburbs.”
But with more golf and a wider range
of courses to offer than ever before, the
people who operate Lake Geneva’s golf
facilities are eager to see how far they can
extend their reach.
The region has long competed with the
Kohler-fueled courses of the Sheboygan
area as well as Door County and the North
Woods for the title of Wisconsin’s most
active golf destination. Once the muchanticipated Sand Valley Golf Resort, near
Wisconsin Rapids, completes central Wisconsin as yet another stop on golfers’ travels
around the state, there figures to be so much
traffic coming and going that all regions
of Wisconsin will gain.
That’s good news for the fledgling golf
trail, Boesch said.
“We’re not going to see huge results from
this short-term,” Boesch said. “I think it’s just

Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama. Everyone knows about that.
“Branding ourselves as one of the Midwest’s top golf destinations is going to be
important for us to continue to thrive. … It’s
going to be important to separate ourselves.”
And when it comes to distinguishing the
golf of the region, the Lake Geneva area believes that its courses are better off standing
together than they are apart.
“I was born and raised here,” Hallenbeck
said. “I love the area. It’s an amazing place to
come to. It’s affordable. From the fishing to
the boat rentals to the hotels to the restaurants, it’s just a really cool place. And all of us
need each other. We need the other courses
as much as they need us to make (Lake Geneva) a golf destination. If you’re going to be
successful in this business, you need to be
successful together.”

Rules of the Game
So What Exactly is the Deal
with the New Scorecard Rule?
T
he Rules of Golf enjoy a four-year revision cycle, ensuring that a Rule is not
changed on a whim without full consideration of any unintended consequences.
The year 2016 will see the latest revisions
to a code that dates back to 1744. As one
would expect after more than 250 years of
refinement, there are no earth-shattering
changes to usher in the New Year. There
are a handful of notable changes, and we
will look at one of them in some detail, as a
quick reading of the change may only create
more confusion.
Rule 6-6d addresses the situation when a
player returns an incorrect scorecard in
stroke play. The basics:
• The requirement for accurate scores
applies only to the hole-by-hole scores and
not to the added score (i.e., the player is not
penalized if the addition is incorrect).
• The player may correct an incorrect score
for a hole up until the time he returns the
scorecard to the Committee. Therefore,
settle any doubtful points with the officials before returning your scorecard.
• If the player returns a score for a particular
hole that is higher than what he actually
made, the higher score will stand, with no
other “penalty” (e.g., on the 71st hole of the
1968 Masters Roberto DiVicenzo scored a
birdie 3 but returned a scorecard with a par
4; the 4 stood as his score for the hole and
he tragically lost by a single stroke).
• If a player returns a score for a hole lower
than actually made for just failing to keep

Stay for the evening.
track of his strokes, he is disqualified (e.g.,
a player takes six strokes to hole out but
returns a score of 5 for the hole).
• NEW FOR 2016: If a player’s returned
score for a hole is lower than what he
actually made because of a penalty he was
unaware of, he incurs the penalty that he
omitted and an additional penalty of two
strokes for failing to include that original
penalty. For example, if a player’s putt
strikes the unattended flagstick in the
hole and he does not include the appropriate two-stroke penalty (Rule 17-3)
because he was ignorant of that Rule and
the Committee catches this mistake after
the player returned his scorecard but
before the competition closes, the player
will incur a total penalty of four strokes
(two for striking the flagstick and two
more for not including that penalty when
he returned his scorecard). (Before 2016,
he would have been disqualified.)
The above revision is the result of many
years of discussion between the R&A and
USGA. The requirement to return a correct
scorecard needs to carry a penalty that is
sufficiently stiff so as to encourage players
to return a correct score and to review any
doubtful points with the Committee before
returning their scorecards. On the other
hand, the penalty should fit the crime, and
the previous penalty of disqualification in
the last situation was felt by a great many to
be disproportional to the offense. It will be
interesting to see how the golf world reacts
to this lesser penalty in practice in 2016.

Brickyard Crossing Golf Club a Unique Experience On a Terrific Track
By Don Shell
V
vvrrrroooooommm! Vvvvrrrroooooommm! Vvvvrrrroooooommm!
That’s all I can hear on this cool, sunny May day, as I tee it up
at The Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort, located in this tiny town
near Indianapolis. It’s hard to hear anything else, you see, since I’m
standing in the middle of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway infield, while
the world’s best IndyCar drivers take their 200-mile-an-hour test runs
around the track — and around me — during practice for the Indy 500.
Simply put, Brickyard Crossing, a Pete Dye-designed track that plays
around and even inside the actual track, is as unique and exhilarating an
experience as you’ll find in all of golf.
And it’s guaranteed to get your heart racing.
A RICH HISTORY
Like the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
itself, the Brickyard has been a golf
course for a very long time, since it
was built as the Speedway Golf Course
back in 1929. By most accounts, it was
a fairly pedestrian 27-hole course in an
otherwise nondescript setting, with a
bridge over the famed track to the 18
infield holes. It played host to a series
of sensational tournaments over the
years, but the place eventually became
outpaced by modern design. But then
in 1991, along came Mr. Pete Dye,
who was hired to rebuild the course
into a championship track befitting
its famous namesake. Speedway president Tony George wanted a worldclass course to go with his world-class
track, and Dye was just the guy to give
it to him.
Dye took George’s carte blanche
to heart, and virtually wiped the slate
clean and started from scratch. Instead
of 27 mediocre holes, Dye created 18
memorable ones, including four fabulous holes within the infield of the
track itself.
YOUR GAME. YOUR TIME.
83
PREVIOUS SPREAD: History and legacy are everywhere you look at Brickyard Crossing Golf Club, from the signture
railroad ties of Pete Dye’s designs, to the concrete wall of the old track embedded into the course. ABOVE: Whether
around it or even inside it, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track looms large at the Brickyard Golf Club.
Brickyard Crossing is one of several
Dye designs around Indianapolis, including Plum Creek, The Fort, and the private
Crooked Stick Golf Club. It also makes up
just one of the eight great offerings in the
Hamilton County stable, which also includes
notables like Purgatory Golf Club, Prairie
View and Bear Slide. Add in some diverse
dining, abundant shopping and a vibrant
nightlife, and you begin to understand why
Hamilton County is becoming a hotspot as a
Midwest golf destination.
Of course, it’s not a bad place to put down
roots, either, as Pete Dye will tell you. For
him, rebuilding the Brickyard was a labor of
love, returning an important landmark from
his hometown to prominence. Pete married
an Indianapolis girl, the famous Alice Dye,
and the two still call the city home, with a
84
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
house on Crooked Stick nearby. That made
Brickyard Crossing even more personal a
project for him, he said.
“My wife’s of course an Indianapolis girl,”
the legendary architect explained. “Alice, you
know, has won everything in Indianapolis.
She won the city tournament 11 times. She
said the ambiance and the aura of playing
out here is so great. Of course, she’s relating
that she’s been out here many times to the
race, when there’s 500,000 people, and all
of a sudden, you can see the 500,000 people
when you’re out here, playing by yourself, or
even when there’s nobody here.”
READY TO ROAR
Today, however, there are plenty of people
here, during the Indy 500 practice runs.
Most are watching the high-performance
machines zip around the track, but the
lucky few are here to test their mettle on
Dye’s 7,200-yard speedster. The roar is
deafening, and you’ll likely never complain
about cell phones on the course again, by
comparison. But there’s also no better time
to play at the place.
One of the Midwest’s best-kept secrets is
that the course is open to play almost up to
race day (May 26, this year), providing players with the most unusual and exciting golf
experience anywhere. And you don’t need to
be a dyed-in-the-wool race fan to appreciate
it, either, simply a fan of the fantastic.
The mystique of the place isn’t confined
to the track, though, it’s embedded within
the course itself, literally and figuratively,
Dye said.
“At the same time we were building the
course, the people were going to tear down
the old wall around the track,” he said. “I was
talking to Tony, and he looked at me and
said, ‘Do you think you need it? If not, I’ll cut
it up and sell it as souvenirs.’ So I went over,
and they were just starting to take the wall
down over there and the engineer was there
and he was real busy. So I walked over, and
he didn’t know who I was from John Adams,
and I said, ‘Pardon me sir, do you mind if I
ask you about this wall, what you’re going
to do with it? And he said ‘I’m too busy, I’m
too busy to talk with you.’ So I say, ‘Well,
I’m with that fellow standing back there on
that hill, and I’d like to know.’ He looked up
there and saw Tony, and he said, ‘Oh, yes sir,
yes sir.’ He was very accommodating.
“I walked back to Tony and said, ‘I tell
you what, I’ll just take it all. All 2 ½ miles
of it.”
Now of course, that history-rich concrete
is embedded within Brickyard Crossing’s
DNA, shoring up water hazards, building
up bunkers, and propping up mounds. It’s
like the racetrack version of Dye’s trademark
railroad ties, which make an appearance in a
supporting role here, as well.
VICTORY LAPS
Concrete and asphalt aside, Brickyard
Crossing’s design is still unequivocally,
unmistakably Dye. From the 380-yard
opener, featuring a fearsome bunker working as a sandy forced carry off the tee, to the
sensational finishing hole, a 491-yard par-4
final test, Brickyard Crossing is one of Dye’s
very best.
Of course, the highlight of the course is
still the four holes inside the track’s infield.
Following the par-5 sixth hole, you race
off into the tunnel going under the track
itself. There’s a stoplight at the mouth of
the tunnel (maybe the only golf course stoplight in America), as the anticipation builds
inside you.
Spilling out into the infield, it’s quite a
sight to behold, from the enormous grandstands, which in a few short days will be
filled with a half-million screaming fans, to
the track itself, with the cars speeding in a
blur all around it. Then, from the elevated
tee of the 193-yard seventh hole, it really
hits you:
I’m playing golf in the middle of
Indianapolis Freaking Motor Speedway.
A pond and a pot bunker guard the
steeply elevated green, but the real challenge
is not being distracted by the view.
The 415-yard eighth hole is one of the
most intimidating on the course, with a large
lake guarding the entire left side of the hole.
Put your tee shot too far right, however, and
you’ll still have to contend with the lake on
your approach. It doesn’t get any easier at
the 382-yard ninth, however, another visualYOUR GAME. YOUR TIME.
85
ly intimidating stunner. The narrow fairway
is pocked on either side by a multitude of pot
bunkers, filling the fairway like lunar craters.
The halfway house gives you time for a
brat or a burger, and time to soak up your
surroundings, before heading into the final
hole in the infield, the 311-yard, par-4 11th.
It’s the closest hole to the track, but you’d
have to make a concerted effort to land your
ball out there — trust me.
By the end of your round, you’ll also
have to make a concerted effort to be anything other than impressed with Brickyard
Crossing. Coming from a man who’s made
a living on bold, larger-than-life designs,
Dye’s restored the roar to a place you’ll want
to race back to again and again.

plenty of challenge for the daring.
Hamilton County’s oldest golf course has only gotten better with age. Built in

has kept it looking and playing great for golfers of all abilities.

THEIR CUP RUNNETH OVER
Traverse City Overflowing With Great Golf, Food & Drink
NORTHERN
The Traverse City Area’s Golf is as Grand as it Gets,
But its Breweries Are Notable Now, Too — By Don Shell
TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan — It’s a hot, humid, late-summer day in
Northern Michigan, the kind you’re grateful to have, knowing they’re in
short supply before fall. Our sticks were in the trunk, and our brides at
our sides as we rolled up M-37 on Traverse City’s Old Mission Peninsula,
home to nine dynamite wineries and some seriously stunning scenery.
We’d taken a break from golfing,
shopping, and eating our way around
the region, a gorgeous, growing area on
the shores of Grand Traverse Bay. But
all this vacationing can really leave you
parched. Long known as one of America’s
great vacation destinations, the Traverse
City area is also nationally known as the
“Napa of the North,” due to the more
than three dozen wineries lining the
picturesque Old Mission and Leelanau
peninsulas. Some of the best include,

Chateau Chantal, and Two Lads on Old

Mission Peninsula, and Blackstar Farms,
L. Mawby, and Good Harbor Winery on
Leelanau Peninsula.
And while wine is fine most of the time,
after a round on one of the area’s 17 great
golf courses, a guy could use a brew (or
two), too. Luckily, this area is fast becoming a microbrewery hotbed, with more

than a dozen delicious homegrown spots for
those that prefer ales and IPAs to Rieslings
and reds.
“It’s more than just a golf destination,
it’s a destination that involves a lot of other
activities, both indoor and outdoor, on and
off the course,” explained Traverse City
Tourism’s Mike Norton. “It’s kind of weird
to be getting famous for beer and wine, but
we grow a lot of fruits up here. We are now
up to 18 breweries, with another coming
online this spring, and almost 40 wineries.”
POURING IT ON
The first stop on our unofficial brew tour was
the delightfully monikered Jolly Pumpkin,
a restaurant/brewery/distillery on the Old
Mission Peninsula. Serving everything from
their own craft beers and spirits to a selection of their partners at Traverse City’s

notable North Peak Brewing Co., the Jolly
Pumpkin is a don’t-miss destination.
North Peak has its own establishment in
downtown Traverse City, along with Right
Brain Brewery, Seven Monks Taproom and
the Mackinaw Brewing Co., among a growing contingent of great local brewers. Over
in nearby Bellaire, you’ll find one of the best
craft creators in the business, Short’s Brewing
Co. Each of the area’s breweries has its own
flair and flavor, but they share a common
laid-back atmosphere you won’t find in your
typical watering hole, Norton said.
“It’s a different crowd, for the most part, a
different scene,” he said. “The winery scene
and the brewery scene are very different. A
lot of our breweries and brewpubs are located in city neighborhoods and they’re places
for a lot of community socializing. There’s
less of a bar or consumer atmosphere; more

like an old fashioned village pub you’d find
if you were in Britain, for instance.”
Some of the more notable additions in
recent years have been the aptly named Rare
Bird Brewery, featuring more than three
dozen of the country’s best microbrews on
tap, and Brewery Terra Firma, a farm-totable style brewer with a BYO-food policy.
There are of course brewery tours, traveling from place to place in everything from
limousines (via GrandTraverseTours.com)
and bicycles (GrandTraverseBikeTours.
com) to a party bus (TCBrewBus.com), to
even kayak (paddleforpints.com), where
you’ll float to six stops along the iconic
Boardman River.
THEIR CUP RUNNETH OVER
Of course, while the libations are top-flight,
the Traverse City area’s golf scene is pretty
mouth-watering, as well. The craft brew
business might celebrate the “little guys,”
but the area’s golf packs the kind of namebrand recognition you won’t find in many
other destinations. Nicklaus. Palmer. Player.

the business have come to this corner of the
country to brew up beautiful, notable tracks.
Indeed, Traverse City is an especially deep
golf destination, with a collection that would
make it worth the 5½-hour drive from
Chicago all by itself. No fewer than 17 stellar
courses make up “Michigan’s Golf Coast,”
GOLF Magazine’s No. 6 golf destination in
the whole country. Add in the area’s gaming,
boating, fishing, hiking, fine wining and dining, and eclectic shopping, and you’ve got a
world-class getaway by any measure.
One of the very best destinations in the
Midwest can be found at Grand Traverse
Resort & Spa, a one-stop shop for all your
“up north getaway,” needs. Located in
nearby Acme, Grand Traverse has lakefront
lodging as well as luxurious rooms in its
iconic 17-story tower, complementing its
on-site shopping, dining and great golf, too.
The resort’s three championship courses
have it ranked No. 48 in Golf Digest’s Top
75 Golf Resorts in America. The Bear, a
Jack Nicklaus-designed test, is a tough-butterrific course that many credit with starting
the area’s building boom.
LEFT: Chateau Chantal is one of the biggest and most beautiful wineries in the region. ABOVE: Short’s Brewing,
Co., in Bellaire, is an award-winner — for good reason.
Backing up the Bear is the Gary Playerdesigned Wolverine — very pretty and very
playable — and Spruce Run, the resort’s
original Bill Newcomb design.
Located across the street from Grand
Traverse Resort is the Steve Smyers-designed
LochenHeath Golf Club, a scenic stunner
with views of East Grand Traverse Bay.
Not far from the Grand Traverse Mall is
The Crown Golf Club, a classic “up north”
style course on rolling terrain. Close to the
city’s center is Elmbrook Golf Club, a fun,
affordable club featuring views of both East
and West Grand Traverse Bay.
Heading west along the scenic M-22
around West Bay, you’ll find the lovely little
town of Suttons Bay, home to the superior
Black Star Farms Winery. Keep following
magical M-22 (go ahead, buy a bumper
sticker) and you’ll come upon Manitou
Passage Golf Club, an awesome Arnold
Palmer design near Sleeping Bear Dunes.
CARRYING THE TORCH
On the eastern end of the Grand Traverse
area lies the beautiful burg of Bellaire, home
to the incomparable Torch Lake. This area
is famed for its Caribbean-blue waters, the
sensational Short’s Brewing Co., and yes,
some great golf, too.
Bellaire’s A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort offers
54 holes across three very varied tracks.
The best known is the Torch, with dramatic
views of Torch Lake. A-Ga-Ming’s Antrim

the newest track, Sundance, is the most
modern and offers views of Torch Lake as
well as Lake Michigan. A-Ga-Ming also
offers 30 stately condominiums available for
stay-and-play deals.
Just down the road is the terrific tandem
of The Chief Golf Course and Hawk’s Eye
Golf Resort. The Chief is pure “Northern
Michigan” golf, with views of Lake Bellaire,
while the Hawk’s Eye is highly touted, too.
But Bellaire doesn’t stop there. It’s also
home to Shanty Creek Resort, a four-season playground with four fantastic courses.
Shanty Creek’s Arnold Palmer-designed
Legend golf course offers lake views and

plenty of thrills, while its Tom Weiskopfdesigned Cedar River course has been
named one of the Top 100 resort courses in
the country by Golf Week.
Shanty’s Schuss Mountain course is
another crowd-pleaser, while the resort’s
original course, a William Diddel-designed
gem called the Summit, is a 6,260-yard fan
favorite, too.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
As scenic and varied as the Traverse City
area’s golf certainly is, that’s just one piece
of the (quite literally) picture-perfect puzzle.
With an amazing array of eclectic shops,
The Gary Player-designed Wolverine at Grand Traverse Resort is a fan favorite for its beauty and playability, and the
perfect complement to the tough-as-nails Jack Nicklaus-designed Bear course there.
eateries and other points of interest, the
Traverse City area is an ever-changing kaleidoscope of cool things to see and do.
“There’s always something popping up,
another winery, another brewery, a new
restaurant,” Norton said. “This spring is the
opening of the Hotel Indigo (ihg.com). It’s
got great views of the bay, and an extraordinary rooftop restaurant. It’s more of a
boutique hotel, with close to 100 rooms.”
For a longtime Traverse City area resident
like Norton, it’s great to see his hometown
evolve into something bigger and better.
“One of the things that’s been fun for us is
to watch the development of Traverse City,”
he said. “It’s great to see the way the town
is changing its perception from an off-thebeaten-path resort town that’s only open for
a few months a year, to a pretty vibrant place
year-round.”
We’ll certainly drink to that.

Streamsong Resort Calls Golfers
Everywhere to its Oasis in Florida Farmland
By Don Shell Photography by Nile Young
THE SIREN’S
Song
STREAMSONG, Florida. — Like a hypnotic
melody calling you home, the buzz surrounding Streamsong Resort the past few
years has resonated like a magnetic hum in
the hearts of golfers everywhere — unshakeable, unavoidable and irresistible.
If you’re a golfer with eyes and ears,
it’s likely been impossible to avoid hearing
about Streamsong Resort, a bold, beautiful
and ballsy upscale golf getaway in a class
— and location — by itself on the Central
Florida golf scene.
Built by the Mosaic (formally Cargill)
114
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
Company, a mining/fertilizer juggernaut
and owner of roughly 16,000 acres in
Florida’s Polk County between Tampa and
Orlando, Streamsong opened in 2013 to
deafening applause. And rightfully so.
With 36 spectacular, dune-swept holes —
the Tom Doak-designed Blue Course, and
the Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw-designed Red
Course — an exquisite new clubhouse with
12 guest rooms, and a 200-plus-room hotel,
spa, and conference center, Streamsong is a
rare bird in the golf business nowadays — a
grand undertaking.
Previous spread: The Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw-designed Red Course has been ranked in the Top 20 courses in
the country, and the No. 1 public course in Florida. ABOVE: The Tom Doak-designed Blue Course, with its signature,

Created on the expansive site of a former
phosphate mine, the terrific trio of Coore,
Crenshaw and Doak built a dynamic course
duo designed to draw golfers to the resort
just like Bandon or Pebble or Whistling.
And while it might be far from a great lake
or an ocean, Streamsong makes up for it
with a sandscape unlike anything else in the
“This property has some of the most
unusual, interesting and dramatic land
forms we have ever encountered,” Coore
said. “The landscape is different than anything we’ve worked with before.”
“The land at Streamsong was naturally
conducive to uncovering great golf holes,”
added Crenshaw.
YOUR GAME. YOUR TIME.
115
“This is such a good piece of land for
golf,” Doak said. “The variety of contours
created by the mining process allowed us to
create a layout unlike any other.”
And while they started with an unusually
interesting canvas, Streamsong’s architects
— unquestionably some of the best in the
game — created not just great golf, but golf
worth seeking out. Destination golf.
They’ve already been rewarded for their
efforts, with a truckload of awards for their
work there.
Coore and Crenshaw’s Red Course was
named “Best New U.S. Course You Can
Play,” by GOLF Magazine, while Doak’s
Blue Course earned runner-up honors in
the same category. In truth, the two are best
considered as a complete work, two sides of
the same coin.
The similarities are obvious. The Red
Course plays to 7,148 yards, features wide
fairways, large lakes and rolling terrain. The
Blue Course plays to 7,164 yards, and features wide fairways, massive bunkers and a
bit more elevation change.
Both courses offer tantalizing par-3s as
their signature holes. The Red’s comes at
the 208-yard 16th hole, a tantalizingly tough
Biarritz green guarded by a towering sand
dune and a wide pond. Likewise, the best
of the Blue is the 203-yard, par-3 seventh
hole, arguably the most picturesque on the
property, carved out of a towering dune and
across another large pond, connected by a
long wooden bridge.
I personally preferred the Blue, and not
just because Doak is a Midwest resident.
It was a bit more varied and fairer for the

mid- to high-handicapper, whereas the Red
Course has a few too many 400-yard-plus
par-4s and short par-3s for my taste. But
those are minor quibbles. The two together
are as fine a double feature as you’ll find just
about anywhere.
FIRST-CLASS EXPERIENCE
The golf isn’t the only world-class piece of
Streamsong’s (ahem) mosaic, however. The
resort is also home to a lavish, 216-room
Lodge, with three excellent restaurants, the
Acquapietra Spa, infinity pool, conference
and event center, and nature trails around
the manmade lake, too.
For those that can’t bear to be too far away
from the action, Streamsong’s Clubhouse
also offers 12 guest rooms, a restaurant and
bar, an award-winning golf shop and meeting space with breathtaking views.
While the resort’s courses are expertly
managed by Chicago-based KemperSports,
118
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
the lodge and spa are under the purview of
Interstate Hotels & Resorts, managers of
some of the world’s finest resorts, with more
than 330 in their portfolio worldwide.
The Lodge, which opened in 2014, is a
contemporary piece of artwork rising out of
the landscape, full of curved contours and
floor-to-ceiling glass, elegant yet approachable. Everything about the Lodge is befitting Florida’s very finest, from the custom
wooden louvers in every room to control the
light, to the plush robes and linens designed
to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
YOUR GAME. YOUR TIME.
119
The resort’s lavish, 216-room Lodge rises like a gleaming monolith out of the central Florida sandscape.
The three restaurants on property vary
from the opulently sophisticated to the
elegantly casual to the award winning.
Just steps from the 18th greens you’ll find
Restaurant Fifty-Nine, the wonderful option
at the resort’s clubhouse (and named for
the magical golf score). At the Lodge you
can choose from the contemporary casual
dining at P2O5 (the chemical compound
that helped build the Mosaic empire), and
SottoTerra, Streamsong’s flagship restaurant
that was named the best new restaurant in
Florida in 2014.
In addition to golf, the resort serves up
a full menu of activities like bass fishing,
sporting clays, nature trails and tennis.
COMPLETING THE TRIFECTA
Of course, golf is the centerpiece of the
Streamsong experience, the lodestone that
pulls people to the resort from around the
globe. And while a Doak and a Coore and
Crenshaw pairing is plenty of reason to get
set for Streamsong, the resort is far from
finished.
120
WWW.GOLFTIMEMAG.COM
Streamsong is nearing completion of a
third course, the Black Course, designed by Gil
Hanse, architect of The Olympic Golf Course
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and co-designer of
Castle Stuart Golf Links in Scotland, among
others. The course will include its own practice facility and clubhouse, and is expected to
open in the fall of 2017.
“We’re honored to be a part of such an
amazing venue and to be able to develop a layout alongside Streamsong Red and
Streamsong Blue, which were designed by the
three architects I admire the most,” Hanse
said. “Streamsong is about an authentic golf
experience, and the natural environment and
landscape at Streamsong is simply like nothing we’ve experienced. It’s one of the very

Chicago’s Own Swingbyte Launches Revolutionary
New Training App, Virtual Coach
By Don Shell
F
rom our steps to our heartbeats and
calories, to our sleep, blood sugar
and more, we are all living in a brave,
new, quantified world. We can track literally (and virtually) all of our body’s major
metrics, analyzing the data for ways to improve ourselves.
Golf swings are certainly no exception.
Swing analyzers, once the domain of
high-end teaching facilities, have become
attainable for the everyday golfer, offering
real-time results on the range for even the
most hapless of hackers. One of the first
to bring this technology to market was
Swingbyte, a Chicago-based company that
took the golf world by storm in 2012.
“There may have been someone else, but
we were the first swing analyzer like this to
come out,” said Patrick Cerone, Swingbyte’s
director of marketing. “A few others came
out after that, but Swingbyte was definitely
the pioneers in this industry. When they
started in 2011, nothing like this
had been done.”
The company was named the Best New
Product at the 2012 PGA Merchandise
Show, no small feat, and parlayed that into
early success in the segment, catering to a
particularly golf-crazy crowd.
“It’s nothing too revolutionary really,”
Cerone admitted. “It just uses an accelerometer and a gyroscope. It was the way
they used them that was the hard work. Not
everybody that plays golf cares about their
swing. We’re appealing to guys that go to
the range once a week, that have a net in
their home, that analyze their swings. That’s
a smaller subset.”

The Swingbyte — a little, white clip-on
piece about the size of a small chip-clip —
measures a mountain of data in every swing,
including:

It wirelessly transmits all that data back
to your smartphone, where the app goes to
work crunching the numbers and tracking
your progress.
“We’re for people that like that amount of
data,” Cerone explained. “We’ve also been
very popular among teaching professionals,
more than any other product.”
But as the hardware became more commonplace — the gyroscopes and accelerometers are found in your average iPhone these
days — Swingbyte has started focusing on
software. The company’s Swingbyte app for
iPhone and Android is the key to unlocking
GAME ON.
There is golf, and there is golf at a higher level. Where courses
both exceptionally beautiful and incredibly challenging beg
to be experienced. As it happens, the opportunity to do
that is right in front of you. Beautiful. Deadly. Irresistible.

all the data captured by the little clip-on
piece of hardware, and the new app might
just hold the keys to improving your game
for good.
“We just introduced Virtual Coach,
which takes the emphasis off the data, and
just gives you tips based on that data,”
Cerone explained. “People have seen the
data, and they say, ‘That’s really cool, but
tell me what I need to do to improve, tell me
what it means.’ This is the question we’ve
been focused on answering.
“We have some artificial intelligence put
in there by instructors, that analyzes the
data and presents. That’s pretty groundbreaking in our space, and we don’t even
know any other wearable company that
gives specific recommendations based on

these individual faults.”
Just take your Swingbyte to
the range (or even in your living
room), take five practice swings,
and the Swingbyte’s Virtual Coach
can provide instant feedback and
tips specifically for you.
“We partnered with Jim Hardy,
who’s a top golf instructor,” Cerone
said. “He’s the cofounder of Plain
Truth Golf. Jim Hardy has built
this ‘fault matrix,’ and each fault
he identifies has a correlating fix,
lesson and drill. We’ve used that
methodology that Virtual Coach
uses when analyzing a swing.
“We had their instructors view
videos and 3D motion, and inputted the faults and fixes into the
database.”
The result is a swing training
system that can really work — if
you’re willing to put in the work,
Cerone said.
“There are really simple things that golfers can do to improve their game, right
in their own homes, with something like
Swingbyte, and not enough people do it,”
he said. “People can use it in their homes,
in their basements, with foam balls, using
Swingbyte. Even if you can’t do a full swing,
you can use it with putting, you can get great
insight using Swingbyte.
“You don’t get better at golf overnight.
It takes commitment and you have to keep
that in mind. Swingbyte will give you instant
feedback, but it’s not going to give you
instant improvement – that’s still up to you.”
Swingbyte retails for $169. For more
