PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
M
ooredale has been a busy place!
With myriad programs underway
and our preschool buzzing with
so many youngsters, the House is always a
lively, energetic place. The preschool once
again delighted all with their annual Winter
Wonderland; the committee did a beautiful
job decorating and providing festive and fun
activities for all. As well, the Ballroom was
full of interested parents on December 4 who gathered to listen to
Joanne Gould talk on the onerous task of preparing our kids for
the university application process. Most gratifying was the crosssection of members in attendance, from Orchestra to Soccer Club.
Stay tuned for the next speaker in our Mooredale Talks series and
please consider joining us. The House is a very welcoming place
on a cold winter’s night!
I feel very fortunate to be part of such a fantastic and
hardworking Board at Mooredale. At the AGM in November,
we welcomed one new member, Kirk Lynn, into the position
of Marketing and Sponsorship. I am ever thankful to each one
of our Board members for the time and enthusiasm that each
contributes toward making Mooredale the vibrant place that it
is. We have a truly special community

March Break – Two 1-Week Sessions!
We’re ready to welcome your kids to two different March Break
weeks this year:
Week 1: Mar 9 – 13 will feature Multi Sports for 4 – 8 year

olds and Intro to Culinary Arts for ages 6 – 10 years. Half
days only from 9am to noon.
l
Week 2: Mar 16 – 20 will feature a Tennis Specialty option
as well as traditional camp activities, theme days and a full
day trip on Thursday for ages 4 – 10 years.
Full days from 8:30am – 4:00pm. After care option available
from 4:00 – 5:30pm.

s I write this, I realize that we tempt fate sometimes at
Mooredale. Remember the ice storm from December
2013? I am happy to say that there is no real accumulation
of snow yet, although we are ready! We have the snow removal
contract signed, the snow shovels are ready and the ice melt is
stationed near the doorways. My best guess is that we will have
more snow by the time you read this newsletter. Yes, we know
we are tempting fate with this prediction.
The Rink at Rosedale Park is ready too – for all the
winter fun enjoyed by skaters and hockey players. The Hockey
season is half over and we can’t wait to see who will rise to the
top of the standings. Congratulations to all you brave skaters
and parents, who have cheerfully enjoyed the fresh air and
participated in some great outdoor fun this season.
The Winter Recreation Guide was full of some terrific
opportunities for members of all ages. And we’re glad you did –
Mooredale has been buzzing with kids in Preschool, programs,
and special interest activities. For all the details on the Spring
Recreation Guide, check it out in this issue. Don’t miss out on
the fun – register starting February 2.
Swimming Pool Club
The 2015 renewal forms were mailed to all 2014 Pool Club
members on Monday January 5. Take advantage of the Early
Bird Fee by renewing before Feb 27. We also welcome new
people to join the wait list – these are the first people who will
be invited to join the pool club, if there are vacancies.
Day Camp and Summer Fun
Winter and early spring are the times when many people
choose their summer camp and summer program options for
their children. Mooredale has been offering summer programs
since 1953. Our Day Camp has been accredited by the Ontario
Camps Association since 1968 and we encourage you to check
out Mooredale Day Camp and the Preschool Summer Fun for
this summer. Our experienced full time Camp Director, Eric
Musselman, would be pleased to discuss Day Camp with you.
For Summer Fun offered through our licensed Preschool,
contact Carolyn Burgess, our Preschool Director. It’s never too
early to register your child at Mooredale this summer!

e are already excited and thinking about spring at
Mooredale. Plans for Mayfair are well underway and we
are looking for almost 1,000 volunteers to help make
Mayfair 2015 a success.
We have many opportunities for adults and students. Middle
and secondary school students can receive community service
hours for their time. We need students to supervise midway
games, award prizes at the prize booth, create wacky hair, paint
little faces, keep the BBQ stocked and sizzling and coordinate the
track and field races. We need adults to help at the BBQ, sell tickets
at the fairground, set up on Friday morning and take down on
Saturday afternoon.
If you are interested in becoming a Mayfair volunteer, we

Children’s Fitness
& Arts Tax Credits
The Mooredale office staff will email receipts to families of
children enrolled in activities which qualify for Children’s Fitness
and Arts Tax Credits. The receipts will be emailed on February
19, 2015 to the email contact address you have listed for your
Mooredale membership. If you have questions, please contact
Catherine Loeffler at [email protected] or call 416-9223714 ext 102. Catherine will email parents who registered a child
for a sport or soccer with instructions on how to access the sports
fee receipts directly.

Mayfair –
Under the Sea
M
ayfair 2015 is Mayfair’s 70th anniversary! The theme will
be Under the Sea – to celebrate the magical world of
mermaids, whales, octupuses and lagoons. So get ready to
embark on a voyage of adventure at Rosedale Park on May 8 and 9.
The Mayfair preview evening will be on Friday, May 8 from 5:00 to
9:00 p.m. The full all-day Mayfair will run on Saturday, May 9, from
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
In case you haven’t been there the last few years, the Friday
evening is a giant neighbourhood party you really shouldn’t miss.
The carnival rides will all be running, and they look great under the
lights! All the Mayfair food venues will be open, for burgers, hot
dogs, fries, candy floss – and some special gourmet options. And of
course the Beer Garden will be operating from 5:00 p.m. till closing
– the two Big Tents will be up and running, a great place to meet
friends, or bring the entire family for dinner in the park!
Saturday morning starts with the Mayfair Parade, arriving in
the park at 9:00 a.m. Kids who dress up in costumes will win prizes
in the parade.
The day continues with rides for all ages from Worlds Finest
Shows, the Mayfair Midway of games with awesome prizes, bingo,
home baking, track and field events, and the Kiddie Zone in the
rink – with bouncy castles, face painting, wacky hair, the Under the
Sea pavilion, and the silent auction. In addition, there’ll be the beer
garden, the outdoor food court, live music on the main stage... and
more!
Of course, all this happens only because over 1,000 volunteers
make it possible. We’ve started the planning, and it would be great
if you’d join our team! If you can volunteer at Mayfair please call our

Mooredale Day Camp provides a traditional Day Camp experience for children 4 - 14 years old. Our
mature, experienced staff, community feel and progressive programs are all the right ingredients
for a terrific summer opportunity for your child! Our programs include: Red Cross Swimming Lessons, Athletics, Tennis Lessons, Cooking, Arts and Crafts, Music and Drama, Archery and more.
This summer we have expanded the Specialty options for Senior-aged campers to include Overnight Camping, Tennis, Drama, Soccer, Robotics, and Basketball. Mooredale Day Camp is accredited by the Ontario Camps Association.

Week 1 of March Break Camp (March 9-13) features two
specialty options for a limited number of participants. Children
ages 4-8 can register for the Multi-sport option, and children ages 6-10
can choose the Introduction to Culinary Arts option. Both programs will run daily from 9 am – 12 pm.

Week 2 of March Break Camp will run as normal. Register your children now for March 16th to 20th . Our
program promises a fun-packed week of games, activities, athletics, arts & crafts, cooking, theme days
and a field trip. The program runs from 8:30am – 4pm each day (optional aftercare until 5:30) and a hot
lunch plus two snacks are included each day. Check out our Tennis specialty option during Week 2 for
children ages 6 – 10 led by the trained instructors from TAC Sports.

Registration for Mooredale’s Summer
Programs has begun!
S
ummer Fun registration is upon us and we invite all
Preschoolers, 2.6 to 3.11 years as of July 1, 2015, to come
splash, swim, glue, ride, dig, sing, and dance and most
importantly, have fun with us! Whether beneath the warmth of
the sun, the shade of our canopies and trees or in the cool comfort
of our Coach House building, it won’t be long before Mooredale
Preschool is transformed into a summer hive of activity. And busy
days will generate big appetites, which will be deliciously satisfied
by catered healthy snacks... and lunch for those who choose the full
day or morning with lunch options.
Full day children are offered afternoon naptime, rest time
and books or, for those whose naps are but a thing of the past,
we offer quiet games and activities, all in the cool comfort of
the Coach House. When our summer fun campers are once again
awake, rested and ready to go, a whole new range of activities
and games await. And, while the full day is offered until 5:30 pm
parents are welcome to pick up their children before that time. This
may also be the first time for your child to be in a program on his/
her own so how about registering a friend as well? We would be
sure to place them together in the same small group. Experienced
Mooredale Preschool teachers staff this program.

crisp and clear morning with song, laughter and jolly HO
HO HO’s filling the air, Mooredale’s Winter Wonderland was
fabulously festive and a sparkling success! Thanks to our
Preschool Parent Committee, Christina Staikos, Natasha Nestor, Rita
Reeves, Laura Palamara, Josie Marciello, Katherine Hallisey, Jennifer
Scace, Anuja Sharma, Kimberley Berman, Danya Cohen, Serge
Vitale, Elizabeth Denham and our parent and student volunteers
who worked so hard to ensure its success. Thank you to all who
participated so generously. And we send a very special thanks to
Rachel Busbridge, preschool committee chair, for her outstanding
effort on our behalf. And a ‘wink and a nod’ to Doug Reid, it
wouldn’t be the same without you ;-)

Recreation Programs
Once again Mooredale will offer a wide variety of programs to
choose from for children, youth and adults. The full spring program
guide can be viewed online on our website. Alternatively, you can
drop by the Mooredale House main office and pick up your own
copy. Registration can be done online or by sending a hard copy to
Mooredale House.

ow is the best time to start planning your spring and
summer activities here at Mooredale as the spring program
and sport season starts in just a few weeks.
There is an excerpt from Silken Laumann’s book Child’s Play
which helps sums up what we believe Mooredale can be for our
community:
“This is my dream. I want to be a part of a community where
children play in the parks and driveways and schoolyards.
I want our children to be vibrant and healthy, to have energy
and imagination and a sense of community. I want to live in
a country whose greatest strength is the relationship between
its citizens, where we know each other and watch each
other’s kids, where we meet in the common spaces of our
neighbourhoods to talk and share our joys and challenges.”
Mooredale has had the privilege of being a common space
where neighbourhood relationships have grown and developed for
many years, and we look forward to continuing to be that place in
this community for many more years to come!
March Break and Summer Camps
March Break Camp (4-10 yrs.) is filling quickly and we are looking
forward to two weeks of activities, theme days and special events.
New this year: the first week of March Break Camp has two
specialty options (Multisport and Intro to Culinary Arts) and will run

and includes a Tennis specialty stream for the first time.

Summer Fun (2.5 – 3.11 yrs.) day camp is operated by Mooredale’s
licensed Preschool and is a great introduction to camp with low
camper/staff ratios, healthy snacks, structured play times, and of
course swimming in the Mooredale pool!

Softball League is just a few weeks away from
throwing out its first pitch. Soon the snow
will melt and the grass will return to its lovely green, the hours
of daylight will be longer, and spring training for will be in full

The MSL (Mooredale Soccer League) is just
a couple months from kicking-off. This year
our theme is the Champions League. With
all of the teams in the Mooredale Soccer
League named after participants in the UEFA Champions League
(largest Professional Club Competition in Europe). Is your son the
next Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, or Luis Suarez, or is your
daughter the next Marta, Sydney Leroux or Abby Wambach? Well

This Spring we have our District Recreational (formerly known as
Select/All-Star) Try-outs for our U12 (2003) to U16 (1999) boys and

Development Program (or RDP) please contact us. We had our
Evaluation Period in the Fall, but there are some spots available in
the program.
Mooredale Jr. RDP Program
The Jr. RDP Program for players born in 2008 and 2009 is available
on Friday’s at Rosedale Park. We are looking for families that
would like their sons/daughters to get a taste of the RDP program.
This program is in addition to the House League and all Jr. RDP
Participants must be registered in our Mooredale House League.

Families and players have been asking us to start a Lacrosse
program here at Mooredale. We are happy to have the University
of Toronto Lacrosse players and staff working with our families
here. We hope to grow this into a full Box Lacrosse League. We

“Another Great Year
of Outdoor Ice Hockey”
It was another great year at Mooredale Hockey,
and through it all the players exhibited the
passion that makes youth sport so enjoyable
to watch, and to be a part of. Every night, the
players worked hard, laughed, scored incredible goals, blocked
shots, made outstanding saves, but most importantly improved
their fundamental skills – skating, shooting, passing.
The coaches, team volunteers, and parents are commended
for everything you do for our community. All of you have braved
the elements – bringing the kids, and coaching the kids, two
nights a week for 10 weeks – and teaching them about fair play,
commitment and dedication. To everybody involved in the hockey

program, you have made a difference in the lives of 170 hockey
enthusiasts – and for that a very big thank you is well deserved.
You haven’t seen hockey until you have watched Mooredale
Hockey, we finished the season with a thrilling Cup Day at Varsity
Arena at the end of February. All spectators and cheering fans are
welcome!
MOOREDALE BASKETBALL LEAGUE
The MBL – we expanded the program to encompass the fall and
winter to great satisfaction. Who knows, maybe the first Raptor
for Mooredale will have started out here. Our Women’s division
returned this year and we look forward to 2015/16!
We want to thank all of the coaches that helped make this
another successful year and we look forward to growing the
program in the fall!

A Classical Canadian Collaboration – February 8
Vienna Piano Trio – March 8
hamber music is an intimate and personal means of
expressing musical ideas, popularly characterized in
performance by the string quartet. Trios are compositions
for three instruments, with the most common types
being string trio – violin, viola and cello and piano trio – piano, violin
and cello. As these instruments are among the most expressive in
the musical palette, trio chamber works are intricate and possessed
with rich musical value.
We have a very special treat for Mooredale members – string
trios and piano trios in two concerts at a noteworthy price of $50!
($40 under age 30). Our concerts conveniently take place at Walter
Hall in the Edward Johnson Building, University of Toronto, 80
Queen’s Park (Museum subway) at 3:15 p.m. The 500 seat theatre
guarantees an intimate setting, and the ability to truly experience
the artistry up close.
MUSIC & TRUFFLES – Classical Music for Family Enjoyment
Artists featured in four of the five concerts will also perform a
one-hour interactive concert for young people 6-15 at 1:15 p.m.
in Walter Hall (Please note there is no concert March 8). Adults
wishing to learn more about music and music-making are also
welcome. Everyone receives a chocolate truffle at the end of these
performances.

These players are accomplished and internationally acclaimed
soloists who have enthralled audiences over the years with their
individual and ensemble performances. They are also Mooredale
Concerts alumni who graced our stage as up and coming young
performers. Now, they unite once again for a thrilling, powerful,
and edgy program, which includes Schubert’s String Trio in Bb
Major D. 471 and Bach’s massive Goldberg Variations for String

Trio in G Major, BWV 988, which will take over an hour to perform!
They will break these trios with a remarkable duo – Sonata for Two
Violins in A minor by Eugène Ysaÿe.
Toronto based violinist Erika Raum was a first place winner
at the 1992 Joseph Szigeti International Violin Competition in
Budapest. She has appeared as guest artist with orchestras
including the Budapest Radio Orchestra, the Szombathely
Symphony Orchestra, the Austro-Hungarian Orchestra, and the
Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra. Former violinist of the St. Lawrence
String Quartet, Scott St. John made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1988
after winning first prize in the Alexander Schneider Competition.
Winner of the 1989 Young Concert Artists Award, he has made
solo appearances with the Boston Pops, the Utah Symphony, and
Toronto Symphony, amongst others.
Violist Sharon Wei completed her studies at the Curtis Institute
and at Yale, graduating with the Viola Prize. Other honours include
top prizes at the London Music Competition and the Washington
International Competition. Sharon has appeared as soloist with
orchestras throughout North America. Cellist Thomas Wiebe is well
known to Canadian audiences as a soloist and chamber musician
performing as guest artist with the Kitchener-Waterloo and
Winnipeg Symphonies, and with the Juilliard Orchestra at Lincoln
Center. He is a member of the Duke Trio.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Trio has toured to virtually
every major music centre in Europe, the Americas, Australia and the
Far East. It brings its famed silken, homogeneous sound in three
works reflecting its signature Germanic and Austrian repertoire:
Schumann’s delicate and highly emotive Fantasiestücke Op. 88,
Mendelssohn’s beloved Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49; and
Beethoven’s 10 Variations on “Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu” in G
Major, Op. 121a (based on a tune from the opera Die Schwestern
von Prag by Moravian composer Wenzel Müller).
The Beethoven work is also featured on the Vienna Piano Trio’s
latest CD, which showcases Beethoven’s two Opus 70 piano trios,
on MDG (Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm). The CD was
voted Record of the Year by the London Times.
The Trio – which currently comprises Bogdan Bozovic, violin;
Matthias Gredler, cello; and Stefan Mendl, piano – is ensemble in
residence at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Recent European touring has
included Wigmore Hall, St. Luke’s, Beethoven Fest Bonn, Berlin
Konzerthaus, Hamburg Musikhalle, and stops in Japan, France and
Belgium. According to the New York Times, the Trio “plays with
the energy of a college ensemble just discovering the power and
passion built into the big repertory works, but with the polish of
long acquaintance. That is an accomplishment.”

to Mooredale members on the Pool waiting list to join as new
